I read this book by myself and then led a parents/teens small group in reading it. My feedback is in that context.

The overall message of the book - its challenge toward generosity (with time, talent, and treasure) and its bent toward generational legacy (not for our glory's sake, but for the Kingdom's sake) challenged the families in our small group in a meaningful way. We also appreciated the practical how-to guide nature of the book which helped us put it into practice.

There are a couple obstacles with the delivery, but as one was specific to reading this with teens and one was stylistic, I didn't think it worthy of docking the book down to 4 stars. 1) It seems from reading the book that the author went on this journey with adult children. With teens, we actually felt it would have been more helpful to be less definitive up front (the family mission statement) and instead to get started on the family meetings where we discuss the direction of our current giving and where else would we like to potentially give. This would have allowed more time and space for exploration over time, which would be especially helpful for the teens who do did not yet feel like they could craft a personal mission statement, and as parents of near-adults, we didn't want to just set the family mission statement for them. To be fair, the author does say a couple times that it took years for their family to land on the course they are today, but I think with adult children they know enough about themselves to be able to put down a starter mission statement together and tweak it over time. For teens, we preferred to get started and let the mission statement develop over time.
2) The author's reliance on his corporate leadership experience made it seem corporate-y and less spiritual at times. I had read the book in advance of the group and I felt like I had to warn folks ahead of time in case they might be put off by it - oddly, there was a pattern of "do this" (sounds corporate-y and restrictive), then further explanation (oh ok, it's not that restrictive, its biblically based, and it addresses the concerns I had). It was a turn off that we had to overlook, but I highly recommend you overlook it - there's a powerful message here!

That was a lot of text to say - I recommend anyone who has a heart for impacting this world for Jesus to read this book; give it a full chance and you won't regret it! If you want to read/implement this with teens, feel free to reach out to me for advice on doing so.

Nurturing a life purpose that leads to lasting legacy

Washington author Richard Leong actively leverages his faith and corporate experience within the church, non-profit organizations, and his local community as co-founder of Renewal Philanthropy. In this sensitive book he shares his life and family in a conversational manner that allows adhering to his recommendations for establishing a meaningful and spiritually augmented legacy. ‘No matter how old you are, no matter your net worth or beliefs on the topic, you are building a legacy right now...a legacy that will get passed on to future generations.’ His beautiful concept of being intentional in our generosity, legacy, and Kingdom impact through faithfully training, growing and then doing provides the stimulus to act now to create our meaningful legacy. This is a very inspirational, spiritually oriented message that makes a strong impact, encouraging us to both live a positive life now to begin an intentional familial legacy of meaningful generosity. Read and grow!
