Masked Duet #2

Burn Butterfly Burn

Rate this book
Secrets and lies rang through the night

The Butterfly took wing and flew out of sight

Ragged and torn, she ghosted along

Unable to love, she danced a new song

Wrapped up in flames to keep all away

They try and convince her to come back and play

Battling fire with fire, they do all they can

But Savy's a master and won't fall for their plan

The flames grow higher the harder they fight

Until all their love, burns everything in sight

What's a Butterfly to do when she gets too close to the flames?
Fly, fly away and start her own damn fire, that's what.
Savy got burnt when she gave those careless boys her heart. She flew from her cage and built a new one made from fire so no one can hurt her again. She's writing her own story now and they won't be a part of it, her book is closed to them.
Her men will do anything to get her back but when fire meets fire it causes an inferno that might turn them all to ash.

Burn Butterfly Burn is book 2 of the Masked duet and completes the story.

Burn Butterfly Burn... she really did let herself burn, gaslighting herself to believe something that wasn't true, after that explosion of a cliffhanger in book one - Savy just accepted what she thought her boys were thinking, put a wall up, dropped out of university, accepted her inheritance and flew to New York.

I adored the first book and eagerly dived into the second book immediately after I finished the first one, hoping for a satisfying conclusion to Savy's story. While I did get the happy ending I wanted, the overall story was not as fulfilling as I had anticipated.  I really wanted to love this one as much as I loved the first book... but.. it felt so rushed, and nothing really happened, 396 pages.. and yet it felt empty. I have so many questions.. so many things felt unresolved.

I liked the significant time gap between the two books, as I expected it to add some depth and angst to the plot. However, I felt that Savy gave in a little too easily, and after reconnecting, there was little chemistry between them. I had hoped for more development in their relationship, rather than just getting back together after so much time apart. Additionally, Beck was hardly present in the story, which was surprising given that he was the one with a child. The son's character was also barely a factor, and it may have been better if the idea of a child was left out entirely.

The whole book was chapters filled with messages from the guys to Savy, apologizing, pleading to come back, expressing their love, etc. I believe the author could have done a better job with this. These years apart and the lack of communication was supposed to serve as punishment, but it didn't seem to match the heartbreak she experienced in the first book. I was a bit frustrated by the initial separation trope, and it was disappointing that none of the men made a physical effort to go after her in FOUR YEARS, besides the countless text messages that she never looked at (even from the night she left), especially since she was supposed to be their unicorn. Their reasons for staying away from Savy were unconvincing. It was difficult to believe that none of them attempted to pursue her after their obsession with her in the first book, especially given the game. Jude was particularly erratic, and it seemed unlikely that he would have restrained himself from going after Savy for four years

Savvy was portrayed as stubborn and unreasonable, taking four years to read text messages, gifts, and letters sent by the four men. The lack of closure from the fatal night left everyone hanging for four years until the men decided to take action. However, the storyline felt contradictory at times, and Savvy's reasons for keeping the text messages without reading them were not convincing. If she truly wanted nothing to do with them, why not just delete the messages? Her character was so frustrating in this second book.

The only time the bond between the five characters was palpable was in the ending scene. I longed for the same love and connection that was so present in the first book, Dance Butterfly Dance. Unfortunately, Burn Butterfly Burn failed to flow in a cohesive way. One character suddenly had a child and other plot points, such as therapy to change a character's behavior or a hitman, seemed to lead nowhere. The estranged sister's sudden insanity and blackmailing of the uncle also felt contrived. A significant portion of the story was set in a hospital for dramatic effect, adding to the feeling that the book was rushed and incomplete.

While I enjoyed the book, unnecessary separations are a hard limit for me, and the predictable antagonist didn't help. Nonetheless, the book kept my attention and had some steamy scenes, with Jude being the standout character. The series is good, but the first book stands out as the clear winner for me. I was disappointed by the direction the second book took, and it's frustrating that the whole situation could have been avoided if the characters had communicated properly. It would have been much better if it had taken place immediately after the first book instead of four years in the future when Savy had suddenly become famous and aloof.

The conclusion to this duet was poorly executed and felt super rushed. The first book was great because each guy had equal page time and a distinct personality, which is important in RH books. However, in this book, some guys barely had any page time, and they all blended together with no distinction. Savy also had little character development and came across as whiny. Most of the issues in the story were due to her running away.

Overall, the ending was underwhelming. I would have given this 2 stars, but I'm giving it 3 stars just for the heartfelt epilogue/HEA.

After reading the previous book and falling down that shitty cliffy, I couldn't wait to die back into this world again, to be reunited with Savy and her boys.
After turning her back on them and them sending her daily endless infinity messages they go unread for years, so it's about 4 years until these men and their girl are back together again. A few mushy moments, a few twists and turns, a few hot spicy moments and I was inhaling this like my last breath needed it to survive. This series reinforced why I need to read more by this author and I'm so glad I took that dive and tried this duet because I really enjoyed it.

So I waited and waited for this book to come out and now I'm DNFing it at 27%

I just can't handle the drama.
The grovelling I wanted to see after the Cliffhanger in book 1? Yeah, it's drawn or over 4 fucking years.
Talk about unfulfilling.
Also, I'm pretty sure that Beck has a kid now. I would need to read the book to know for sure, but he had this drunken hook up a few months after she left, then there's a few random mentions that left me feeling like he's now got a baby by someone else that is going to get thrown into the mix and I just can't right now.

Maybe I'll go back to this series later when I've got more patience, but for right now I'm just feeling pretty crushed that I waited months just to be let down.
I'm thinking this might not be the author for me, because I read another series of hers only to be let down as well in the second book.

I truly don't understand how to feel about this duet. It's objectively not good, but yet, it's a very fast read and kind of addicting. This is a dark contemporary reverse harem that is also a reimagining of Cinderella, which was somewhat original. I don't think I've ever read a Cinderella dark contemporary reverse harem.

For this book, I read a spoiler about book 2 before I started it, knew I wouldn't really like it because Beck has a child with another woman, but yet I still read it. There is so much insta-love in this duet, which I really could not stand. In book 1, these guys were making fun of how nerdy Savy was in one chapter, and then the next chapter they're all head over heels madly in love with her and talking about forever. Meanwhile, Savy is a pretty weak, special snowflake. I found her hard to relate to.

I didn't like the time jump in this book from the end of the last book. We jump forward 4 years. All of the guys have been non-stop trying to get Savy to answer their calls for all 4 years since they last saw her. They are celibate, except for Beck who got drunk one time and had a one night stand with a drug addict that resulted in a baby. So now Beck has a child with another woman, but he's still pining over Savy trying to get her back. I think my problem with this is that Savy is so mad at them from the end of book 1, but I don't think their offense against her was that bad. They didn't believe her/thought she lied to them for like a split second, and then they were chasing after her apologizing, but it was "too late" for Savy *eye roll*. The guys spend about 70% of this book groveling, and it was just too much because they didn't do anything that bad in my opinion. It was a little boring until the action at the end with the villain.

The big part of this book that annoyed me is that I feel like Savy lacks any real chemistry with 2 of the guys. I honestly would have been fine if she just ended up with Jude--he was the main one who she had good banter and romance with. Jude was the shining bright part of this duet. He was hilarious. Ash was interesting in book 1 when he was obsessed with her as the dancer, but he read like more of a background character in this book. I liked Tate in both books, but he doesn't come close to Jude...he's kind of like a marshmallow who doesn't add much or take away anything. He had a much better character in book 1 too with the fake dating + his dad. Finally, Beck could have been cut out of this duet completely. He had no chemistry or romance with Savy in either book--he came off as a side character. It felt like Beck was only interested in Savy because his friends were. They just had sex and talked about how much they love each other--there were no other interactions in either book. Add that to the fact that he had a baby with another woman during the time jump when they were "broken up", and he just wasn't doing it for me. We also didn't really get to see the kid that much throughout this book....Beck just wasn't it.

There is also so much cringey dirty talk in this and weird metaphors about cages and butterflies. It was a little too much. Who talks and thinks like this?

The HEA was decent too, but Savy is just so fucking annoying. I don't understand why these 4 guys are so obsessed with her.

Anyways, I wrote this whole review and I still don't know how I felt about this book. I couldn't stop reading it but everything annoyed me?

I hated the first book & honestly only picked this one up because I’m a masochist and my curiosity got the better of me.

The pacing of the story is off.
The entire plot of this story is really the guys winning her back, but it’s just not well done and everything falls flat.

My biggest issue with this book is the writing itself.
Run on sentences, lots of missing commas, and general grammatical errors.
Most importantly, the writing itself feels juvenile. Inner monologues and dialogue between characters doesn’t feel true to how people at this age would think/speak.

It’s genuinely difficult reading because of the writing.
Wouldn’t recommend at all.

So I was a bit frustrated regarding the initial separation I’m not a fan of this trope and couldn’t believe not one of these men tried to actually go after her physically, I mean come on four years that’s ridiculous and she’s meant to be their unicorn as well. I also wasn’t a fan of the Bennet storyline and just thought it was added for the conflict it caused.

Despite that this was well written and had some excellent grovel included personally though they were lucky to get her back as how did they know she wouldn’t have moved on in this time I mean out of sight out of mind. I also wasn’t a believer of the boy's Celibacy I mean come on four bloody years and they work in the sports industry with so many temptations mmmm I’m sceptical.

I still enjoyed this maybe not as much as the previous book as unnecessary separations are a bit of a hard limit for me and the antagonist here was just so predictable for sure, but still, it kept my attention and it certainly brought the heat to play and can I just say JUDE!!!! He was the definite selling factor for me. Overall a good series but the first book is definitely the stand-out winner for me and I was slightly disappointed at the direction this second book took things.

Also, I know I’m like a broken record now but I’ll say it again BLOODY FOUR YEARS!!!!! and this all could have been avoided if she just read her bleeding text messages and they had all actually communicated like regular human beings geez 🙄

How to take a 4 to a 1 with one plot line….single dad development

Soooooooooo its not really a spoiler when it happens at beginning of book and is something some people would want to know.
They turned this reverse harem into a single dads story. As in all the guys raising a one night stand kid.
Some like single dads story, not me. I like to know up front. I’ve read some that were great and the exception to my rule. NOT this one!
The one guy of the quad who was most quiet in first book, Beck goes on bender 2 months past her leaving and screws with a literal druggie who becomes his baby mama that he pays off to get custody.
He and the other boys are raising the kid together. They say the kid is the reason they didn’t reach out sooner than 4 freaking years to her.
This is huge part of the story this book. And the fmc just rolls over and is like omg I’d do anything to have a child like him, plays with kid first day she talks to them again and Beck says I want you to be his mom….. 🙄
The other guys seem to all have been celibate from day one of 4 year breakup, pledging to wait to for her.
Beck waited two months….
Ick Ick Ick. No mention of if he ever got tested after druggie hookup baby mama at frat party. The woman was literally off the streets at party with some frat dude she said “I was going to screw Jim for drinks tonight but you’re a better option to ride” or whatever. He wakes up naked and his wallet and phone are robbed and she doesn’t return till kid is month old and says take him.
This just ruined the entire book, two books really.
Why? Why make the heroine pathetically wait for the boys? Why not let her explore her sexuality in those 4 years? Or maybe SHE is the one with a baby???? Ugh!!! I think if the author had let that happen, the baby mama drama would have been more acceptable.
Also, idk maybe if you didn’t make the kid and his previously not so main character dad the centerpiece of this reunion? Like hello Jude and Asher were the mains who were so obsessed with her??
Or Maybe make the three guys who remained true to her while apart the centerpieces?
I was excited to think this might be a possible new author for me to read after first book. Do not read again list is the list this one goes on. 😑

I waited for this book to come out and was so excited... But it felt thrown together. Maybe it wouldn't have if they hadn't of spent 4 years with no communication, but there was barely any connection when they got back in touch, it was just disappointing. I wish that there was more on them growing together rather than them just getting back together after 4 years. Also Beck wasn't in the story much though he should've been considering he was the one with the kid. I was disappointed that that was just kinda thrown in there too. His son was barely a part of the story and it would've been better just to leave that idea out of the plot completely. It just seemed like the author, Reese, had a bunch of ideas and mashed them together and it just didn't work how she was hoping. The only time you felt the bond of relationship between the 5 of them was the end scene. I wanted more of the love that was palpable in the first book. I LOVED Dance Butterfly Dance. It's one of my favorite books and I really had high hopes for Burn Butterfly Burn.. it just didn't flow in a cohesive way with one of them getting a kid and having bits of that thrown in and another having therapy to change him but it was barely mentioned and another being shot by the estranged sister who was crazy all of a sudden and was blackmailing the uncle somehow and the hitman that went no where or that fact that a ton of this story was just in the hospital for dramatic effect.. there was just so much going on with so little mentioned about each thing that it made it feel rushed and incomplete. I'm really sad because I wanted to add this in my top fav series but the second book brought it down a lot, unfortunately.

Duet Narration
Narrated by Maeve York as Savy, Christian Black as Asher, Vincent Skye as Jude and Beckett, and Matt Haynes as Tate

I'm so glad I relistened to this series. It's one that has stuck with me for almost two years since listening to it the first time! And honestly, this time around I loved the second book wayyyy more than I did the first time. You know how, as you get farther and farther into your reading journey, you start wondering if your taste in books has changed or if you might have outgrown certain favorites? That 100% was not the case with this one. It hooked me just as fast this time as it did the first. However, I will be correcting my star rating to reflect how much I loved it this time around, especially after binging them back to back!!!

These men DEFINITELY redeemed themselves after everything they put Savy through in the first book! The maturity and growth really came through in Reese's writing, and I found it to be incredibly accurate, especially when you consider the fact that they were younger college students the first time around.

While Jude 100% stole the show for me in the first book and I think he'll always have my heart. That savage little pit bull who doesn’t take no for an answer when it comes to the woman he loves! But I do think the other three really got their time to shine in this book as well!!

Each of these narrators was so perfectly cast. Maeve did such a wonderful job in both the first book and this one! She brought Savage Savy’s kickass personality to life so well. The character development between all five of these characters was so well done, but getting to see Savy grow and develop into such a strong woman was one of my favorite parts, especially narrated by Maeve! She highlighted all of Savy's vulnerable moments as well as her strong ones.

Matt's performance as Tate was one of my favorites. When he spoke to Savy with such sincerity, it came through beautifully.

Vincent, ahhhh!!! Vincent narrated Jude and Beckett, and while I LOVED him as sweet, single dad Beckett, his performance as Jude was absolutely spot on. Every goofy, unhinged thought Jude had came through so perfectly in his delivery.

Christian's performance as grumpy Asher couldn't have been better. We got to see so much growth from Asher’s character, and Christian did such a wonderful job bringing out all his feelings, especially when it came to his devotion to Savy after coming to terms with her secret.

I can't recommend this audiobook enough!!!

If I died today, my reading goals would be fulfilled❤❤❤
I have been asking for a grovelling book since forever
and boy oh boy did this book deliver

let me just say that as much as I wanted to give it 5 stars like the first book
there was one tiny thing that just felt short and it will have to do with 4.5🌟🌟🌟🌟 ⚡

Many Romance or Dark/Romance writers of second chances don't seem to know how to write a good grovelling book because they simply want to skip it to go quickly to the hot and heavy sex scences

this would immediately make me lower my rating
because as much as I like spice, I want it compatable with my steak - i.e the plot

this book is a masterclass on how grovelling should be
the 4 idiots wronged Savvy so she ghosted them for 4 years FOUR FREAKING YEARS!
and they spend these 4 years grovelling and grovelling
and even when they are reunited, the grovelling kept on
she put them in their place
she asserted her worth
she draw the line that she will never accept to be wronged again

and there was no surprise pregnancey to make her accept them
no forced situation
she took them on her terms

Now what made me lower the rating a bit from that elusive 5 stars is the thing that happens in all RH romances
there always seems a writer's favorite that always steals the spotlight
and that person whose presence is just unnecessary

so it is obvious that Jude was the favorite
he gets most of the scenes and the spice
Tate is in second place

Ash had to be there because he was obssessed with Butterfly in book 1, but his character felt bland and undeveloped, sometimes bordering on unimpotant

Beck was the one that felt unnecessary, remove him from the book, and the story will run in the same directions
we don't know wether he pursued his dreams or what he brings to the table other than he had a cute kid

so that was my only set back
other than that, I will be an avid follower of Ms Reese if she keeps writing wonderful books like these

I really enjoyed the first half of this, kinda despised the second half.

The same sentiment applies to how I feel about the duet overall. The first book was a fun ride, the second half underwent major construction and stops.

The time jump did us all a disservice, the groveling was fun, the secret baby was so stupid, and I wished the FMC actually transformed instead of just a physical change.

Overall, read this for a fun time and a fun time I did have for the most part.

50% and DNF. FOUR YEARS?! And she couldn’t even read a single text??? And then still not communicating when they show up?? Just have ONE conversation sheesh. And her constantly saying “You didn’t come, you said one hurtful thing blah blah blah” never mind that you literally said nothing and then left and ghosted them, but yeah it’s their fault when they tried to talk to you everyday for years. Then her not taking Mark seriously, just juvenile. Not at all how a “matured” woman would act. The whole four year thing also made the groveling lack luster. Disappointed.

More a note to myself than a review

Started book 1 then checked reviews of book 2

Stupid situation and lack of communication leads to a years long separation 🙄 where one of the guys had sex with someone else (this is the second book/series where this author has done this), I absolutely hate it when the guys are with others after the h.....makes me twitchy and stabby so I'll pass on this series

I enjoyed The Mask Duet very much. I liked the first book a little bit better then the second.
- a little Cinderella story, a little sports romance and a lot RH
- I liked the characters
- I liked that all of them messed up at some point like real people do
- I love all the MCs imperfections, because they make them so perfectly human
- all the MCs have their own career.
- it's four years after the first books
- I love the covers of both books of the Duet
- HEA
I would recommend this book

the first book was quite good, this one...was not...

at the end of the last book i was excited to see the guys chase after Savy, grovel a a bit, then figure out their relationship. instead they dont chase her and it skips 4 YEARS in the future.

so many random plot points that werent needed. like Bennett randomly having a kid? why, just why. and the kid was only in like 2 scenes, it was so unnecessary, it served no purpose. and the video of Mark, it was only talked about for like 5 seconds? and the whole Vanessa evil scene just why? it wouldve made more sense if it happened 4 years prior because Savy turning 21 cut them off so they wouldve been desperate then not now...

their reasons for staying away was bs. as soon as they talked after 4 years it was basically cleared up in no time. your're telling me that after how obsessed with her they were in book one that not one of them was immediately going after her? even with the game? jude was half unhinged, he wouldve went and thrown her over his shoulder and brought her home, not sent some random text for 4 years knowing she wasnt reading them....

all in all it was just okay, it wouldve been 100x better had it happened directly after book one not 4 years in the future when Savy is randomly famous and cold...

This was probably my favorite from Reese so far that I have read. It was addictive, hot and sweet with a ton of miscommunication and groveling. The MCs all have a past that gets in the way of a HEA at first, but as the years pass and with top tier groveling they finally get their HEA and it’s HOT!

absolute dumpster fire.

“want me to slay this slit of yours?” is an actual quote from one of the mmcs to the fmc during a smut scene. i actually wish i was joking. drinking game idea: take a shot everytime this author describes the fmcs cooch in a matter that could be described as nothing short of lovecraftian (fair warning: will lead to liver failure at the very least). the author genuinely chose to use the word DETONATING to refer to the fmc climaxing 😭

mid way through one of the smut scenes i literally had to set down my kindle and look up the author because i was dead convinced it was a man with the way the descriptions were written. was at a loss for words for 99% of the time i was reading these books

Well that took a turn!!

We pick up straight after book 1 and these men realise they messed up and are grovelling hard.
But heartbroken Savy isn’t having any of it, she has taken her place within her father’s company and cut all communication with the guys.

Fast forward 4 years!! and the guys are done waiting for Savy and go for what they want. They are relentless and make sure she knows they aren’t giving her up.

But things are not smooth sailing, there’s a threat to Savy lurking.

It was soooo good!
