Hmmm, this one was just okay for me. The beginning was a little frustrating with the insta-love, or the way it felt like insta love to me. But then it got better as you got to know these characters and their backstories.
But also, trigger warning for reading from the POV of a super toxic misogynistic man, those scenes made my stomach turn I wasn’t expecting that 🥲

Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone? They paved (yuri) paradise and put up a parking lot.
Maki and Midori dated all through high school, but it was just a phase for one of them. Now adrift in the real world, Maki’s heart is still very much stuck in the past. Midori, meanwhile, has allegedly moved forward, except the changes in her life don’t especially seem to be for the better.
Two girls embraced the yuri ideal while at an all-female school, but only Maki figured out her homosexuality from it. That’s complicated. When Midori comes crashing back into her life and is the textbook example of a very bad idea, it gets worse.
And with the initial punch of Midori’s wedding, plus the second revelation, which is bog obvious but I can’t believe they went there anyway, she just upends Maki’s life like no time has passed between them. And Maki’s emotions are still mired enough in what Midori was back then to let it happen.
There’s little subtlety here, which is fine because Maki has about zero immunity to Midori and the art gamely reflects that in a really fun way. The art is worth a mention - it took time to get used to this style, but it’s really good in the end - these girls do not look like the women they become, it’s much different from the norm. More teenagers should be so believably gangly. There are some full page moments that are really well done too.
But, let’s be real, this relationship is a bad idea. Midori doesn’t have anything figured out, ten years on, so arguably she’s even worse off than Maki is because she thinks she’s left everything behind. Which turns out to include the one person who ever truly cared about her.
And that’s not to judge Midori, people think they’re a lot more put together than they truly are all the time, but it doesn’t change the fact that seeking solace with Maki (no kiss is ever just a kiss, Midori!) is straight up using her friend. Heck, Maki knows this, but, again, no resistance to Midori’s charms.
Oh and these two do have chemistry together. There’s a palpable shift in the two - it’s the only time either one of them ever seems at all happy, even if this dalliance might be tearing one of them up inside. And Midori might try to get beyond it, which is a lot easier even for her to say than to actually do.
Then there’s Tazune, Midori’s husband to be. If you’re waiting for his mask to slip, it won’t take long, as he turns out to be the toxic masculine ideal. An absolute bastard who has zero respect for women. I’d say he goes real dark real fast, but the story at least tries to show he’s one of the many losers who couldn’t handle rejection and came out a pathetic misogynist.
Tazune’s turn at the end is a little much; as highly readable as this manga is, it definitely lacks the nuance of contemporaries such as Even Though We’re Adults. But it also doesn’t contradict anything we’ve learned and, while we’re just meeting the character, he’s existed as a piece of crap for a long time (that he still draws in other women is perhaps the most depressingly true-to-life part of it all).
This is off to a good, messy start. It is complicated and, while it really goes for it sometimes, the setting and circumstances are both realistic and interesting. And it knows how to complicate the plot in some brutal ways. I mean, the fact that the second twist is still even a thing by the end of this volume? Hoo boy.
And both female leads are interesting. Midori is the pile of problems, while Maki just has no resistance, and together they might be better but being good for one another is a whole other step. I also really liked Maki’s support network, which is something I hadn’t really seen before and made perfect sense.
Plus, we get some flashbacks scattered throughout to show their evolving relationship over the years. There’s a real flair to some of this. The parting words Midori tosses off at graduation are sweet and then absolutely cutting at the same time.

Khi còn là một nữ sinh Trung học, Maki đã có một mối tình với cô bạn Midori. Tuy nhiên, sau đó Midori đã rời đi, kể cả khi đã gần 10 năm trôi qua, Maki cũng chưa bao giờ quên khoảng thời gian bên cạnh Midori. Đây là lần đầu tiên mình đọc manga Girls' love (GL), chủ yếu mình quan tâm BL hơn cơ nhưng giờ lại muốn đổi "gió" tí.
Không lãng mạn sến súa, ngay từ Vol.1 mà Run away with me, girl, Vol. 1 đã có nhiều chuyển biến ập tới khiến mình ngạc nhiên. Tình yêu mà Maki dành cho Midori vẫn còn đó, cô ấy có thể nhận ra những gì mà Midori đang cảm thấy.
Đối với mình Midori là một nhân vật khá là ích kỷ, sau nhiều năm bỏ đi và giờ đây cô ta lại tiếp tục xuất hiện trước Maki - một cách như chưa từng có chuyện gì xảy ra; mình cũng thừa nhận rằng, Midori là một nhân vật phức tạp và mình vẫn chưa thể hiểu hết được cái ước mơ về hạnh phúc của cô ta.
Những nhân vật trong manga này ai cũng ích kỷ, họ khao khát tình yêu, lợi ích cho bản thân họ. Nhân vật mà mình ấn tượng cho tới hiện tại có lẽ là Tazune Tonoike,
một nhân vật đã khiến cho mình thích thú mà sẽ đọc tiếp các tập còn lại. Không chỉ mỗi POV của Maki, Midori, mà POV của Tazune khiến mình đồng cảm (dù cho Hiện tại anh ta là một thằng khốn!).

Midori is engaged to Tazune because she's afraid of being alone, didn't tell him she wanted him to wear a condom, and got pregnant. Tazune is a flaming misogynist because of past school trauma who just gets worse and worse as the book goes on. Momo is still in love with Midori ten years after they graduated from high school and she's starting to see the cracks in Midori's veneer. This volume is messy and almost certain to get messier as the story goes on, and I almost want it to be called Run Away, Girl, directed at both women. It's a tough read, but a good one - just don't expect an easy story.

Not gonna lie, I'm not sure if I actually want the leads to end up together. They both have so many issues to work out that romance should be the least of their concerns. Maki has no self-esteem and keeps bending over backwards for someone who keeps leading her on. And while I sympathize with Midori, it's still shitty of her to take advantage of Maki like that. I appreciate the mangaka for delving into the characters' backstories, but I'm not sure if I care enough to keep reading.

Cominciamo bene: primo volume che mette in pentola tanti temi, tutti che alzano un po’ l’asticella dal manga mainstream. Da tenere d’occhio sicuramente, spero non si perda coi prossimi volumi. Disegni top.

Un inizio non particolarmente innovativo sul versante dello svolgimento, ma quantomeno vengono introdotte anche tematiche più adulte, come abusi e dipendenza affettiva. I disegni sono diversi dal solito anche se non sono molto nelle mie corde, ma sono curiosa di vedere come proseguirà!

I’m absolutely IN LOVE with this manga. It was so much better than I thought it would be. It truly blew me away.
This felt like such a genuine and heartfelt portrayal of the challenges of having a beautiful high school romance that ends once you graduate because both of you are closeted.
Maki and Midori both felt like actual people. Their challenges were real.
We have Midori who is about to get married, is pregnant, and regretting her life choices while desperately trying to hold on to a life that does not and will not make her happy. Meanwhile, we have Maki who has been holding on to her love for Midori even though they haven’t seen each other in ten years. She’s still closeted, but her closest friend is a lesbian high schooler who she can share her genuine feelings with. Her family expects her to settle down soon, hopefully after grad school, but she’s still unmoored from the moment Midori walked out of her life.
The two of them yearn for each other in a way that makes my heart melt. They bring each other comfort and light, but Midori still doesn’t believe there’s a real future there. Maki offers an escape, but she’s too scared to take it.
Meanwhile we witness the cracks in Midori’s life. Her fiancé puts on a smile for all, but his cutting words to Midori still come out. His childhood experiences with girls have clouded his view of women, and made him into a man who considers all women, including Midori, inferior to him.
It’s all done so well that not a single page feels wasted or rushed. We get exactly what we need from each memory and each scene. SO GOOD!

Personnellement même si les sujets abordés sont durs c'est le genre d'histoire que j'adore, deux femmes qui se retrouvent et on attend que l'une pique la meuf de l'ordure misogyne qui sert de conjoint à l'autre. Je trouve que c'est bien raconté et j'ai vraiment hâte de savoir la suite. Par contre c'est à réserver à un public majeur.

3.5 ⭐️. The timelines weren’t always immediately clear so I was confused at certain points and I think the side characters need a bit more background info since they play big roles, but other than that I really loved this! It’s the first GL manga I’ve read and can’t wait to continue the series!

Oh my god. Thinking of all the women in Midori's situation who end up stuck the way she is absolutely breaks my heart. The missing star is because I didn't really care for Midori's "friend", we already have so few good platonic relationships between women, and I did not want to see the lame sob story of her incel fiance. fuck him

much deeper than i was expecting. i thought it was going to be just fluff, but it's actually tackling some serious issues. def looking forward to the next volume. the art style is really fun and unique, too. midori's expressions especially are so good.

un yuri avec des moments adorables mais aussi avec des sujets profonds et sérieux. je suis hyper contente d'avoir découvert ce manga. j'ai hâte de voir les personnages grandir. j'espère qu'elles auront leur bonheur.

This seems like it will be an intriguing slow burn sapphic romance. I can't say I was too invested in the story but I would be interested to see how many volumes this ends up being and where the story ends up going.
