Alone with All That Could Happen: On Writing Fiction

Rate this book
In this revised and expanded edition on the art and craft of writing fiction, David Jauss leads writers on a journey deep into the writing process. Bret Lott says of this book, "The best way I know to discover how words do their work, and to understand how they can become art , is for the apprentice to study with a fierce and compassionate master of that art. David Jauss is just such a master, and this book grants its readers-you who desire to know what it means to write-an invaluable course of study, all at the hands of this extraordinary teacher, writer, and human."

The most friendly, intelligent, USEFUL book about writing fiction I've read in a long time. Jauss covers epiphanies, first person, point of view, flow, even how to put together a story collection. Without pretension, with care and fresh thinking, Jauss gets to the heart of things in ways that are insightful and compelling, debunking much of what is taught as conventional wisdom. Point of view is not what you think it is, folks. Think deeper. Write better. Read and study this book! This book is and update of a previous edition.

I loved this just as much as Words Made Flesh. Just like that one, this is offers in-depth, complex essays on a variety of topics applicable to fiction. Probably too technical for beginning writers or casual readers, but perfect for me. My favorite in this one was the last, "Stacking Stones: Building a Unified Short Story Collection." Which was something I'd only given passing thoughts to until I tried to do it myself. Typical for Jauss, the essay in no way tells one how to do it or even what to try. It's more an analysis of techniques observed in various collections and what makes those techniques effective. Jauss is obviously widely read and is a good, analytic reader. In comparison, I read like a wild animal with no skill or manners, which makes me especially appreciate when good readers share what they've noticed.

If you're sick of conventional wisdom on POV/Perspective then this book is for you. I only purchased this book so I could read his essay on Perspective. The author dissected POV into techniques that can be used to zoom in and out of the character's experience. There's also the decoupling of author, narrator, and character which is very logical and natural. Even though this is very academic it does a wonderful job teaching perspective since it provides a plethora of examples. As for the other essays, a lot of it is more on the abstract and academic side than practical. Nonetheless I did enjoy reading his other essay on plot vs structure.
