David Wolf #16

Dead Canyon

Rate this book
When a drug runner on pre-trial release disappears, nobody’s surprised in Sluice-Byron county. What is shocking, however, is when Wolf finds the man’s severed foot, tracking ankle bracelet still attached. It looks like somebody has come to retrieve their man, and make a statement while doing so.

Why? Wolf wonders. And what happened to the man? Is he still alive? These questions are pushed aside, however, when Wolf realizes somebody in town has also disappeared, someone he’s grown close to over the years. And now the clock is ticking, and the need for answers has become much more urgent.

With the help of friend and former lover Special Agent Kristen Luke, Wolf is clued into a major FBI operation under way in the southwest, and it looks like everything is intertwined, part of the same ongoing power game, one with seemingly no rules, starring shadowy, horrifying players who have no regard for life.

With stakes as high as it gets, Wolf and Luke will need to dig deep, using all their skills and determination to win. Because for Wolf and Luke, and for those they hold dear, losing is not an option anybody will be able to live with.

Good plot but writing not stellar

This is the first Jeff Carson novel I’ve read (#16). I have read many other police procedurals and mysteries, including the Harry Bosch series, all the Kinsey Milhone (Alphabet) mysteries by Sue Grafton, lots of Agatha Christie, Jefferson Bass, Patricia Cornwell, Jussi Adler-Olsen, Lisa Scottoline, etc. I enjoyed the plot, but the writing in this book was just not up to par: there were enough grammatical errors that it was annoying. (Shouldn’t Carson’s editor at least know the difference between lie and lay? Shouldn’t the author or the editor know the difference between subjective and objective pronouns; that it is “en route,” and not “on route”?) There were many awkwardly phrased sentences and a fair amount of what I consider trite wording. I’ll take a pass on any future books from this author.

Dead Canyon is the latest in the David Wolf series by Jeff Carson. I have enjoyed this series and this latest one didn't disappoint.

This book starts out with the arrest of a drug 'mule' transporting a car full of drugs. The Sheriff's office was tipped off about the car coming through which allowed the stop and arrest. The judge released the suspect pending trial while wearing an ankle location monitor and to stay with his cousin living near town. When the ankle monitor goes blank, David Wolf (Chief Detective) and others go to investigate only to find the cousin dead and the monitor still secured to the ankle ... just not with the rest of the body attached.

Find the suspect and whoever took him (Mexican cartel is presumed) becoming top priority. When a DEA agent quickly arrives at the Sheriff's office to seek information, it is only later that it is learned that the DEA agent was really a brazen cartel member seeking information on who provided the tip leading to the arrest.

When the local psychologist doctor is next kidnapped, it is because he had been providing court directed counseling while awaiting trial. The cartel thinks the doctor may have learned something from the suspect during the several sessions. Wolf and the FBI race around Colorado in search of the doctor and the cartel before more people are killed. The general setting is again in the mountains of Colorado but also diverting to the high desert to the west. The descriptions of the landscape is again well done and giving a image to go along with the narrative.

This was a disappointing read for me. The only one in the series that got a poor rating. For the most part, the plot involved a boring chase in the Rockies. The killer was not the sharpest knife in the drawer, yet he outsmarted several police forces and the FBI at every turn. The love scene at the end of the book was a Hallmark moment.

Pretty surprised that someone who has been a sheriff/detective as long as Wolf has, missed several important clues about the suspect. The FBI wasn't very effective, either. Nor was Patterson as head sheriff. A lot of reacting and not much in the way of forethought. A lot of awkward sentences, too. I was disappointed.

Running out of storylines?

I've enjoyed this entire 16 book series, but it seems that the last couple were short on character development, had only one major plotline and were without much suspense. The author has also largely moved away from the main supporting characters, which is unfortunate. This one was good enough, but certainly not his best work.

This Man Sizzles
Sixteen books into this series, and I still can't get enough of this lawman. It seems like he's hit every high and low a person can experience in these stories, and yet I still want more. David Wolf is at once an enigmatic yet authentic character. He's complicated, yet he would claim he's about as simple as they come. As Lead Detective for the Sluice-Byron County Sheriff, he's a tough and fair LEO with strong ethics, good instincts, and years of experience. Something about his quiet confidence just allows the testosterone to ooze through the chapters of this thriller.

Our favorite female FBI special agent, Kristen Luke, is back in this one to help Wolf track down a psychologist working with the courts. He was presumably kidnapped by cartel members who also kidnapped their mule, a man who was due in court that morning. When he failed to appear, deputies went to his temporary residence and found only his foot with the monitoring ankle bracelet still attached.

Together, Wolf and Luke navigate the deadly terrain of the drug cartel while attempting to ignore their past relationship. They were good together, but both of their jobs got in the way. Luke will soon be taking an assignment out of the country and Wolf has moved on to another woman named Piper: a woman he has a lot in common with. While the bulk of the story is about chasing down the missing men and the bad guys who took them, the romance does play a small part. I couldn't help wondering if the title related more to the terrain or to Wolf's love life. That man has had every kind of bad luck a guy could have with the ladies. That bad luck streak doesn't look like it's going to break any time soon, either.

If you're not into series reads, each of Wolf's adventures can be read as a stand-alone, so dive in anywhere. But if you're a reader who appreciates the history and character development that comes from reading a series, then definitely start back at the beginning and buckle up for the ride. Jeff Carson has created a remarkable cast of characters, rich in detail and easily engaging. Each mystery he encounters seems better than the one before.

(2.5 stars) This was my first (and will be my last) David Wolf book. I got it as an audible deal-of-the-day book so at least it only cost me $3.

Up until the very last moment, this was a three star, kind of boiler-plate Mexican cartel thriller with so-so characters (including the intrepid David Wolf) and a so-so plot that had interesting moments but overall dragged along until the very last scene when David's girlfriend gets in danger. It just didn't really stand out in any way to me...until the very last scene.

Now, I'm not going to hide this review because of spoilers because this particular end scene had nothing to do with the overall book, indeed one wonders what the author was thinking when he included it (more on that later). [If you don't want to know about this particular very dumb development than stop reading here...]

After everything has been resolved and the plot comes to an end there is a scene in which David Wolf is talking to his girlfriend. She confesses that she in fact does not want kids. What, what?!? You just got done battling a Mexican cartel and your girlfriend suddenly tells you...wait for it, that she doesn't want to have any kids? Why is this scene in the book? It makes no sense. David's response? Does he dump her because he wants kids? Does he sympathize with her desire? No, for his part David confesses that he is going to get a...wait for it...vasectomy!! Yeah, David!! We are so glad we found out this information! It really helped develop your character and bring the book to an end.

This "ending" made so little sense to me, that I began to wonder if one of the author's friends dared him to put something about a vasectomy in the book. It's that out of place. Strange. At any rate that particular "clever" development dropped the book to a solid 2.5

Dead Canyon is Jeff Carson doing what he does best: delivering the single most addictive entry yet in one of the best crime series running.
Sixteen books in, and somehow Carson just turned the dial up to eleven. David Wolf is back in the high country of Colorado, chasing a killer who’s using the vast, treacherous canyon system as both weapon and graveyard. The stakes have never felt this personal, and Carson leans hard into Wolf’s past in a way that had me holding my breath for entire chapters.
The pacing is relentless: short, brutal chapters that end on knife-edge cliffhangers, forcing you to keep swiping at 3 a.m. like a possessed raccoon. The wilderness itself is a character (beautiful, indifferent, and absolutely lethal), and Carson’s descriptions of the terrain, the weather, and the sheer physical punishment Wolf endures are so vivid I had to put my Kindle in the freezer twice just to cool down.
Every supporting player (from jetboat Patterson to rookie Rachette finally stepping into his own) gets moments to shine, and the villain this time is legitimately terrifying: smart, patient, and several moves ahead. When the final confrontation hits, it’s one of those rare set-pieces that made me actually yell out loud in my living room.
If you’ve been riding with Wolf since Foreign Deceit, this is the payoff you’ve been waiting for. If you’re new, do yourself a favor and start at book one, because once you finish Dead Canyon you’re going to devour the entire series anyway.
Hands-down the best David Wolf yet. Carson isn’t just writing crime thrillers anymore; he’s writing modern Western masterpieces. Clear your weekend. You won’t be leaving the house until it’s over.

I've listened to all 16 of the David Wolf books and have loved every one of them. Sure there's a mistake or two but I don't go hunting for them and drop the score to one or two stars because I ran across them. I'm more concerned with the story-line, and the story is always great.

This was all about drugs mules and cartels and murders and kidnapping and one insane killer. How can you go wrong?

There were a couple of kisses, which really upset on reviewer LOL, and there's no swearing to speak of, which I do find a little ridiculous. NO drug dealer or cartel member is NOT going to swear like a drunken sailor. You can't use the word "shit" over and over again and call that swearing.

As for the narration: If Sean Patrick Hopkins ever stops narrating these books I'll stop listening. From the very first book every person had their own distinct voice and I would know who is speaking even if the book didn't say. And his emotions when he reads are spot-on. A perfect narrator for the David Wolf series.

While hunting a drug smuggler in the desert mountains of Colorado, David Wolf gets intimately involved with a case that comes too close to home! A drug runner that was caught in the small town of Rocky Points from an anonymous phone tip, is being held for trial. Not speaking to anyone about anything, he is suddenly missing and his foot is the only thing that remains. A local psychologist who was speaking to the man suddenly goes missing and Wolf needs to recruit FBI friend Luke to assist with the manhunt!.

As the drug smuggler's past comes into play with his close friend and "mute" accomplice, they find themselves running not only from the local police, but from their own Mexican cartel as well. Chased through the mountains and escaping by mere minutes from the pursuant Wolf army, the drug smuggler gets personal against Wolf!

From my perspective, this was a classic Wolf story, and of course Luke is involved. It was a good read and a more exciting plot than some of the recent ones.

Another Great David Wolf Thriller

I have really enjoyed all of Jeff’s David Wolf series! This one is full of intrigue-thriller action, most of it with Wolf and his ex girlfriend Kristin Luke and her FBI partner Archie Harrigan racing to track down a psycho killer who kidnapped a friend of David’s. Although the plot unfolded and the showdown culminated as I expected, I still could not put it down until I finished it. Thank you Jeff—I loved it! I like that Wolf is finally finding some happy. My only comment back would be that would have liked a bit more time including my favorite snarky detective Rachette. I enjoyed what we saw of him here in Dead Canyon but it wasn’t enough!

In #16 Dead Canyon, Jeff Carson further expands his thrilling story of David Wolf. Carson. Just. Gets. Better. With. Each. Book!
A drug runner/mule is pulled over with a car loaded with Drugs, every conceivable space is packed with illegal contraband. Put on pretrial release, he skips his trial. The search is on! Tracking the ankle bracelet should lead Wolf and team right to him. Should! During the hunt, a leading psychologist in town is missing! Friend of Wolf! Bodies piling up. FBI friend Kristin Luke comes to aid David, while his girlfriend has special news. A father at 50+? Oh!
Suspense, murders, kidnapping, drugs, old loves/new loves, cartels, scores to settle, an amputated foot....and much more. Thrills and Twists with Time Expiring!!!!
I highly recommend this outstanding new thriller, Dead Canyon by Jeff Carson!!!

An Ending You’ll Never Forget

David Wolf has a lot on his plate in this story. While there is a lot going on personally, everything centers around Juan Ruiz, an intelligent and evil cartel lord that delights in threatening, torturing, and killing just for his own pleasure. While there is never a dull moment in this book, the ending is one of the most captivating I have ever read. I was mesmerized by Jeff Carson’s writing and ability to capture fear and panic.

I have read all of the books in this David Wolf series and recommend them to you highly. Dead Canyon is the latest and greatest, don’t miss it.

Drug Cartel Rogue vs David Wolf and Kristen Luke

What more would you want in the final installment of the David Luke series? Dr. Hawkwood gets kidnapped after a rogue drug cartel member cuts the foot off of a drug runner that gets caught and remanded to meet with the good Doctor. Luke and her team get called in to assist in finding the doctor and catching the Cartel member that seems to like leaving bodies everywhere he goes. In the end Ruiz (Cartel) finds his way to Wolf's home and on the hunt for Piper who's staying there waiting for Wolf's return. Will David get to Piper before its to late? Will Ruiz meet his maker? Dead Canyon is a great book.

The story was slogged down with way too much detail in the mountain chases, etc. It was fairly predictable as well although the character development was quite good. I enjoyed reading about the diversity in characters. The story line is an example of what the USA is facing today with drug cartels at the southern border, etc. It exposes the violent reality of the cartel life and how people get involved in their operations. The relationship between Wolf and Piper appears to stabilize in this story but we shall see!

Now what will I read?

I waited to write a review until I had read all books in the series. Jeff Carson is a masterful storyteller. With every new book I got sucked further and further into his characters and their environment. I enjoyed all 16 books and can't tell you how many nights I was awake until the wee hours because I just had to know what would happen! The main character is a perfect mix of good guy with a few flaws. You really want him to succeed. Can't wait for #17!

Carson finally got it right

Usually Carson gets all flowery about the scenery, expounding endlessly about this river, that valley, or those clouds. I mostly enjoyed the series, except for all the endless environmental descriptions. Book 16 kept most of this glorious adjective-laden rhetoric to a blessed minimum, blending it into the plot. Thank you! I was able to enjoy the plot’s twists and turns, and WOW there were a lot of those! This is a great read and, IMHO, Carson finally got it right.

I just finished reading all 16 books in this series and absolutely loved them! Well written, entertaining and full of suspense! The characters are strong and well developed in their respective plots and I thoroughly enjoyed the interactions with each of them. Carson has a way of making his readers feel like they are in the thick of things, right there along with the characters! Lots of action, lots of humor interlaced with romance and wild escapades! Great series to get hooked on and I can’t wait for more adventures with David Wolf!

David wolf and Friends Are Like Old Friends

I have enjoyed every one of these novels! If you are just getting started on them, you are in for lots of treats. Don't miss any of them.

This one was scary! I was so hoping for an ending such as I just enjoyed and afraid it wouldn't happen. I hope there are many more stories to come.

As a displaced Colorado boy, now living on the sweet Coast, I really enjoy returning to my roots with these novels. Don't miss any of them.

David Wolf is back

This was a good read. Good character development, continuity with previous books and characters, and plenty of action. Nothing bordering on “superpowers” or science fiction, just very believable criminals and law enforcement officers, and of course some twisted up interpersonal relationships. I found myself pulling for Wolf to get in there and fight, solve the case.

Read all Sixteen

I read all 16 books in two week s. Loved David wolf, even if he chewed tobacco at one time . Who could kiss someone who chewed tobacco? That goes for all the characters. Not a romantic trait. Never been to Colorado but felt the weather to the bone. I would like to see a Netflix series based on these books. Skip the chewing and spitting. Let them smoke of you must.

As the parts of Colorado radiate in their lives, David & Piper start a new life together

I really took care to take in the details of this story but with my eye on the details of the mountains and I could even smell the pine and pinion. The author has a great way to involve the readers in all aspects of living in Colorado plus the understanding of love and life with terror hiding in the corners.
