WHEN THE HUNTER BECOMES THE HUNTED…

DI Amy Winter faces her toughest case yet as a serial killer couple kidnap and hunt their prey. After capture, the victims are released from an unknown location each day. But freedom does not come easily as the victim’s injuries become more severe, and if they haven’t escaped by day four, they won’t live to see the fifth.

At five months pregnant, Amy is feeling backed into a corner as the father of her child, DCI Donovan, urges her to share the news. But Amy doesn’t want to be treated differently by her team, much less lose their respect when they discover she’s in a relationship with her DCI. When a call comes in from the killer asking to meet Amy, Donovan intercepts and sends a decoy in her place. But while officers are concentrating on the decoy, Amy is kidnapped from outside her flat. She is the next victim, and the countdown begins.

After being bundled into the back of a van and driven to a desolate woodland, Amy’s heart sinks in her chest as she realises the killers have no intention of playing fair.

DCI Donovan is distraught as he discovers Amy is missing. When his team receives a taunting video, he is left in no doubt of the danger Amy and his unborn child are in. He must pull himself together to hunt the killer down. But with no clues and no location, there is only one person with intimate knowledge of how a killer’s mind works. Lillian Grimes – Amy’s serial killer mother. But can he persuade her to help him in time? As the days progress, Amy’s injuries grow more severe, and her team are locked in a desperate race against time.

Can be read as a stand-alone.

This is the fifth book in the excellent DI Amy Winter series by author Caroline Mitchell who is one of my go to authors as she never lets me down. In the latest novel in the series all the boxes are ticked once again making this an excellent read.

‘In Cold Blood’ DI Amy Winter and her team are hunting down a sadistic couple who snatch women and make their lives a misery just for the fun of it. Their victims are inflicted with injuries daily before been murdered. Amy is now five months pregnant and still insisting on keeping it secret to the displeasure of father to be DCI Donovan.

The tension escalates when Amy is contacted and instructed to meet the couple putting further lives in danger.

Great characters, plenty of suspense and tension make this another excellent Caroline Mitchell novel. My reviews of her books are getting a bit repetitive due to the high level of consistency she maintains.

Another excellent read.

IN COLD BLOOD is the fifth book in a new series by bestselling author Caroline Mitchell, a police procedural, featuring DI Amy Winter, the daughter of a serial killer. Another winner!

The books in the DI Amy Winter Series include:

Truth and Lies (Book 1) (Read)
The Secret Child (Book 2) (Read)
Left For Dead (Book 3) (Read)
Flesh And Blood (Book 4) (read)
In Cold Blood (Book 5) (Read)

This is my review of In Cold Blood.

While this novel can be read as a stand-alone, I would recommend that you read the novels in the series in sequence, as there is a lot of references to previous storylines, and it would be easier to follow, and understand Amy and her background. DI Amy Winter is the daughter of a serial killer, Lillian Grime, a serial killer who has just been released from prison. Amy had grown up in a dysfunctional family under neglect and abuse in the household. Amy pushes the boundaries of police procedure.

DCI Donovan heads up a specialist crime team and is in a relationship with his partner, DI Amy Winter.

DI Amy Winter faces her toughest case yet…a serial killer couple kidnap and hunt their prey. After capture, the victims are released from an unknown location each day. The victim’s injuries become more severe, and if they haven’t escaped by day four, they will be dead by the fifth.

At five months pregnant, DCI Donovan, urges Amy to share the good news with her team of their relationship and pregnancy. But Amy doesn’t want the team to treat her differently. When a call comes in from the killer asking to meet Amy, Donovan sends a decoy in her place. But while officers are concentrating on the decoy, Amy is kidnapped from outside her flat. She is the next victim…

Amy is thrown into the back of a van and driven to an isolated woodland.

DCI Donovan is distressed as he discovers Amy is missing. Then his team receives a video showing the danger Amy and his unborn child are in. He must hunt the killer down. But with no clues and no location, there is only one person with intimate knowledge of how a killer’s mind works. Lillian Grimes – Amy’s serial killer mother. But will she help?

It is now a race against time as Amy’s injuries grow more severe.

This was another fast-paced police procedural novel with complex plot, lots of twists and turns and well-developed characters. The author’s previous experience as a police detective enriches the overall quality of the novel.

Audiobook narrated by Kim Bretton 7hrs 1 minute

DI Amy Winter and her team are known for solving horrifying cases. However, when Amy goes missing, it's up to her colleagues including the father of her child, PC Donovan, to save the lives of Amy and her child before it's too late.

I was initially hesitant about listening to this audiobook because after the first four books, the narrator, Elizabeth Knowelden, was replaced by Kim Bretton. I was worried that I wouldn't enjoy this book as much. However, I need not have given in to my fears so easily because Kim Bretton did an awesome job with the narration. I eagerly looked forward to my evening listens.

With Caroline Mitchell's gift of creating a tightening atmosphere, horrific villains and writing short, punchy chapters, I was swept away in this narrative. Aside from the main protagonist, Amy Winter, Caroline Mitchell has created one of the most memorable characters in fiction- Lillian Grimes. My goodness, I DETESTED this character so much but I also thrill at every time she is on the page.

If you like police procedurals with terrifying serial killers, I highly recommend the entire series of five books be added to your TBR.

It was an early Christmas present when I heard that there was a new Amy Winters book coming, and I was so excited to receive an early copy from the lovely Caroline Mitchell herself. I have been reading her books for a long time now and they just keep getting better. Di Amy Winters is one of the most interesting police series I have read, with her being the biological daughter for serial killers. And she was the one who called the police on them! Tell me that doesn't make you want to read this series!

In Cold Blood is the 5th book, and Amy has a really rough deal this time. She is 5 months pregnant, and only her partner knows. She is still suffering with morning sickness and working on finding a couple who kidnap and toy with their victims before they dispose of them. And now Amy is the latest victim. Her team will do anything to get her back alive and stop these sadistic killers. Even contacting Amy's mother, who is the worst of them all.

An absolute page turner that I would have read in one sitting had real life not gotten in the way. You have to pick up this series and read them all. They are all on Kindle Unlimited so what are you waiting for. Thank you, Caroline Mitchell, for sending me this copy to read.

Amy is a character who without a doubt has one of the most interesting backgrounds having a serial killer for a mother. Five books in and I am still fascinated about her childhood and her family. For Amy though it is a big cross to bear and you can’t help but empathise with her. You can sense her turmoil at the thought of becoming a mother herself and at times throughout the story, I wanted to wrap my arms round her to reassure her as well as protect her from the unexpected situation she finds herself in.

The killers in this book are sick and twisted. As if it isn’t bad enough that they kill their victims, they play with them first. It’s very much a cat and mouse situation and my heart was pounding when Amy is abducted and has to try and beat them at their own game. Seriously, if this novel doesn’t send your heart racing, I don’t know what else will as I was on tenterhooks throughout and unable to sit still until I got to that all important conclusion.

In Cold Blood may just be the author’s most chilling and darkest read yet! Lillian, Amy’s mother, is one seriously messed up character and as much as I loathed her, you cant help but appreciate the thrills she adds to the table. The tension mounts as it becomes a race against time for Donovan and the team to work out who is behind the killings and Amy’s abduction. My heart is still racing now just thinking about it. This is an author who never disappoints and I hope there are going to be plenty more books in this deliciously dark and oh so very twisted series that has given me lots of jaw dropping moments!

My thanks to the author for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

In Cold Blood is the fifth book in the Amy Winter series, but it can be read as a standalone. I can hear you asking ‘what makes this series worth reading when there’s so many crime series out there? For me it’s Caroline Mitchell’s writing, her plots are grim, the crimes are gruesome and her books always make for an exciting, chilling read.

DI Amy Winters doesn’t have an easy ride in this book. She’s five months pregnant and investigating a serial killer couple who kidnaps and hunts their prey. After capture, they release the victims from an unknown location each day. Freedom does not come easily and if they haven’t escaped by day four, they won’t live to see the fifth. When Amy is kidnapped by the couple, DCI Donovan (who is the father of Amy’s child) leads the hunt for Amy. But with no clues and no location, there is only one person who may be able to help Donovan. If anyone knows how a killer’s mind works, it’s Lillian Grimes, who is Amy’s serial killer mother!

Most fictional detectives come with baggage, Caroline Mitchell has dealt Amy a cruel hand, Amy’s biological parents are notorious serial killers! As you can imagine, this has affected Amy. She strives to be the best detective she can whilst looking for signs that she may have inherited her evil parents’ genes. Amy’s character has developed as the series has progressed, and I love her ‘kick ass’ attitude.

One of my favourite reads is when you have an intriguing serial killer, here we get three for the price of one, if you include Amy’s mum! One of the strengths of this book is the chapters told from their twisted POV, as you learn what motivates them, a sense of foreboding grows and the tension increases tenfold. In Cold Blood is a cracker of a read. It’s thrilling, chilling, and hugely entertaining. A MUST read for crime thriller lovers.

How I wish there were more hours in the day. If there were, I would've devoured this in one sitting!

In a complete surprise, we've been treated to a fifth DI Amy Winter book just in time for Christmas. This series was amongst the very first I read so I was excited to hear the awesome news!

Caroline Mitchell has pulled out all the stops with In Cold Blood. Amy is currently five months pregnant, absolutely unsure about her thoughts about becoming a mother and is still unable to make a permanent commitment to Donovan, her partner and DCI.

Just to shake up their lives even more, Caroline just HAD to place Amy in more danger than she's previously been in! The hunter certainly has become the hunted! And just to top off this utter madness, it's Amy's estranged brother Damien who's out for blood!

I've totally forgotten my hatred for Lillian. Manipulative, controlling and showing no remorse for Amy's welfare, she's up to her old tricks once more. Lillian has vital information about Amy's whereabouts and in true Lillian style, she is able to turn the situation into one that is all about her. The moment that made me really angry was the deal she tried to make with poor Donovan!

Speaking of Donovan, morally (and possibly legally) he really shouldn't be leading the investigation at all... But that won't stop him. As he fights to bring them home, you can just see the fierce love and protectiveness pouring out of his soul.

Given how perfectly this wrapped up, I'm not sure if it's possible for the series to continue. Still hoping though- I never expected a fifth installment after all!

God I LOVE this series but I have to confess after finishing this I am a little worried we won't see any more books in this series??? Anyway back to the book itself. First of all if you plan on reading these in order maybe stop reading this review as it will inevitably contain spoilers because Amy's life has moved on....

We catch up with Amy as she is negotiating her secret pregnancy. It makes it more difficult as her boss DI Donovan is also the father of the baby and her partner. This latest case is particularly dark and gruesome. It seems a couple are kidnapping and holding people captive and then giving them a chance to literally run for their life. If they don't succeed their deaths will be brutal and Amy and the team catch this case when one of the killers contacts her directly.

The result of that call is that Donovan decides to go behind Amy's back and send a decoy, whilst in the meantime the killers manage to kidnap Amy from her house while the team are pre-occupied. That is literally all I can say in terms of the storyline but what I will tell you is that I was on the edge of my seat with this one. There was so much at stake and so many mistakes, emotions were involved and it all gets incredibly messy. I was totally and utterly absorbed in this book and loved every single page. I am unsure whether this series will continue or not but if it does I AM HERE FOR IT!!!!

The countdown is on to find Amy after she's abducted, and the race against the clock keeps the story moving right along. Amy being pregnant complicates things, especially for her police coworkers who are unaware of the pregnancy and that Amy and her boss are dating. Of course there's a bit of "going rogue" from DCI Donovan, but nothing too over the top.

The Grimes family factors into this story heavily and Lillian is her slimy self with just a few cracks of humanity. The ending completely shocked me, I did not see it coming at all.

My Rating: 3⭐️⭐️⭐️ another good addition to this series, solid and I am keen for the next one!!

This is the 5th book in a series that in my opinion should be read in order, you could read these standalone but you will miss out on some of the backstory although there is a bit of recap throughout.

As I said in my previous review I am pretty behind in my reviews so I am going to keep the next lot of reviews pretty short and sweet - phew I hear you all say in relief 🤣

Again another solid police procedural and one thing I do like is that the author used to be a police officer so she does do the procedure well however she does know when to take liberties to keep the fiction and thrills alive. I like that its not all reading about the piles of paperwork I am sure these police officers must do!!

Amy and Donovan are most definitely a couple although she keeps turning down his marriage proposal but the big surprise is that Amy is pregnant (not a spoiler if you have read the synopsis) and shes nervous as hell. As you can imagine her parents were serial killers and shes wondering if shes going to give birth to Britain’s next top serial killer… so nervous is an understatement. She also isn’t keen on telling anyone… so lots of drama.

The other big issue is there is a killing couple on the loose snatching up women and hunting them down until they kill them… Amy of course is in their sights and the super twist is who Amy recognises when her hood is removed. Donovan is beside himself and lots and lots of drama ensue.

For me this was good… but not great. This had so much potential and one of the main killers was a bit of a let down for me. I think it was a clumsy way to bring this person into the story… and personally if you wanted to bring this person in… you needed to have one of Amy’s team kidnapped maybe Donovan… if you read you will understand why. IYKYK - thankfully nothing sick goes down between this person and Amy.

Overall again it’s worth a read especially if you already read up to book 4 and to be honest this is better than book 4 but just not 4 or 5 star worthy in my opinion. You can pick this one up again on KU so jump over and give it a try!!

WHEN THE HUNTER BECOMES THE HUNTED…

DI Amy Winter and her team are working on their latest case and this is a tough one. They are searching for a couple who abduct women and hunt them down for fun, each day they inflict injuries upon their victims and if they haven't escaped by day four, they don't make it out alive. Amy is five months pregnant with DCI Donovan's child and he wants nothing more than to make it public but Amy is holding back. When the abductors call asking to meet Amy, Donovan sends a decoy in her place but, unbeknown to him, they are one step ahead and abduct Amy from outside her own flat and the hunt begins. With no known location and very little to go on, can Donovan persuade Lillian Grimes, Amy's serial killer mother, to help him and, if so, will they find Amy before time runs out?

In Cold Blood is the latest in the DI Amy Winter series and it's so good to see her and the team return! This one, as always, hits the ground running, Mitchell knows how to keep Amy on her toes and us readers on the edge of our seats. The plot is unique and well crafted, with great characters and the perpetrators are pure evil. It was great to see more of Denny, who was first introduced to us in book four, Flesh and Blood. This story is action packed from beginning to end, with some great twists along the way and I was absorbed into the trials and tribulations faced by Amy, Donovan and the team from the very first page. Once again Mitchell treats us to a tense and nailbiting rollercoaster ride where I was praying that Amy managed to escape her captors. The author has smashed this one out of the park and it's safe to say this is her best one yet, in my opinion. As I've said before with her others, this one can be read as a standalone but, I'd recommend they are read in order to get an understanding and background of the characters.

I'd like to thank Caroline Mitchell for inviting me to read an advanced copy of this book, I will post my review on Goodreads now and Amazon on publication day.

Amy Winter is back in the most blood thirsty case to date and oh my what a case!! A psychopathic couple hunting with humans rather than the traditional fox or game. They’ve brought the hunt to the 21st century with scrambler bikes but still the whole thing is barbaric! And then they do the unthinkable and kidnap one pregnant Amy. Wrong move Hunters, wrong move!! She’s loved and respected by her team and they will move heaven and earth for this amazing DI.

From chapter one to the very last word, I pulled along at hyperspeed through four horrific days. Mitchell seized my attention and held it captive until one almighty climax which took my breath away. The change of narrative each made me look one way and just as I thought I knew where I was heading, my focus was dragged away to find another character taking centre stage.

I personally think this is the darkest most brutal book I’ve read from Caroline Mitchell. It’s gut wrenching, violent and sick – I loved it! Absolutely bloody brilliant. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 what’s next?!??

Oh wow bloody fantastic

Please excuse the bloody it's the only word without actually swearing that I might get some attention. This is the second time of reading this book. Having been so in awe with Caroline Mitchell book and a ending I don't think anyone could HAVE predicted or imagined. That my jaw hi the deck and for a while I wanted to savour the book. My thoughts were so amazed at one particular thing I genuinely didn't actually believe had happened. I knew it hard but it left me feel in thought at the time my heads was still trying to process something. Unfortunately I can not say what. Let's just say it's a I expected twist no one could have foreseen but a twist so suddenly coming out of the blue as most twist and turns do. So I am genuinely sorry both I totally refuse any sloilers now I have said time and time again this book is definitely a must Read. So putting all others I have said it to I still stand wholeheartedy by that However because I was so feel in thought I forgot to post my review. I read it the first day of release I stayed awake because I really could not put it down. But rather post my review I wanted to read it again . Now in my life once I have bread a book once I never every read a book twice and someone my age have lived by that .the first ever book I read twice I am going back well over 35years to a book written by Gerald Seymour called Harry's Game. Now I can say this one. Perhaps if they pure brilliance. Just a genius writer this certainly as to be my book of decades to say by God it's not just worth one read but two. Only a I a fantastic story and extremely genius of a writer can truly get me to read a book twice this is a pure definition of a genius of a writer she is. Now this as to be a most enjoyable book I. Years and most definitely a Must read

Women are being snatched off the street and hunted like animals during their capture. They either escape on day four or are killed.

DI Amy Winter is now five months pregnant and still hasn’t told any of her family or work colleagues. Her partner, DCI Donovan, wants her to share the news but Amy keeps pulling away.

When Amy is kidnapped by the couple, she has to start fighting for her life and also her unborn baby’s. Can the team find Amy in time? The four day countdown has begun!

I need to make a confession, I have all the DI Winter books on my kindle, I haven’t had the time to read them yet. I plan on remedying that and very soon.

This story had my heart in my mouth, it was fast paced, edgy and incredibly tense.

The killers are seriously sick and twisted individuals and I just couldn’t get my head around how evil they were.

Superb characters throughout the story. I also enjoyed learning about some of Amy’s past, which was referenced in the tale.

This is an incredibly dark story that I found thrilling. Wonderful writing from the author, this was a joy to read.

My new series favourite!

I love the DI Amy Winter series it is my favourite of Caroline Mitchell's closely followed by her Detective Ruby Preston series.

If you haven't read any of the previous books in the Amy Winter story I would absolutely recommend you do (and if you loved this and haven't already done so, read the Ruby Preston series too).

Firstly, they are a good read and secondly, although you can read this as a standalone, I don't know if I would recommend it. There is so much more to this storey; the complex family ties of the Grimeses and decades of issues and history that only the other books will give you context on. Without the previous books I don't think I would have the understand and appreciation that I do have for most of the events throughout and the characters in this book.

My only gripes, is that I couldn't find an Audible to accompany this latest instalment and Emmy Ellis of Studioenp, needs to be careful when she is editing as she has missed some typos!!.... sorry, it's a pet peeve!

A Rare Review ... I usually just rate!

I have only just found Caroline Mitchell's books and her D. I Amy Winters series. I rarely write reviews worried I will say something to spoil it for others. However I have been so impressed by this set of five books I have to comment.
All the books are very well written, complex and interesting to the point it is very difficult to stop reading. So much happens and the characters are well thought out and realistically loveable...the 'goodies' that is! The 'baddies' they are very bad! I've read and enjoyed many thrillers and police procedurals and mostly can guess the outcomes and those who prove to be guilty. In this five books however I've never been so surprised on so many occasions.
Well done and I'm about to delve deeper in your selection on offer. Thank you xx

Another Amy Adventure!

I just love these DI Amy Winter books and have been reading them since the first two books were out, and have been "patiently" waiting (obsessively checking? Kinda the same) for each new book in the series as they've been released.
Amy is someone I think we can probably all relate to a bit. Her character has grown immensely through the series.
DEFINITELY READ THE SERIES.
These books are quick moving, the central cast of characters is great, and you'll probably stay up late reading!
I think my highest praise for the series is this: this series is on Amazon Kindle unlimited, but I've actually purchased the books instead - for 1. To support the amazing author, Caroline Mitchell, and 2. Because I've re-read this series a couple of times and should it ever be taken off of kindle unlimited, I want to have the series.
Okay! Get to reading!

3.5 stars, generously rounded up. This is the first DI Amy Winter novel I've read. I noticed the series because of its high ratings. I enjoyed this one and will definitely read the previous ones in the series at some point. But I am still surprised about the high ratings.

This one was certainly suspenseful, and there was a thrill at the very end, but most of the story was told in two fairly tame, non-violent plot lines: a straightforward police investigation consisting of interviews with lots of people, and Amy who tried to talk the kidnapper out of killing her. There was lots more talking than doing.

Compared with the Rizzoli and Isles novels in which the bad guys keep on killing throughout, this was pretty lacklustre.

I love Caroline Mitchell's thrillers, she is probably my favourite writer in this genre, and I have particularly loved her Amy Winters series - a feisty, resourceful DI who just happens to be the daughter of the notorious psychopathic serial killers Jack and Lilian Grimes, rescued from their clutches at 4yo and adopted by a legendary police officer & his wife, following her adoptive father into the police service.

If this is the last Amy Winters book, it is an absolutely brilliant one to bow out on. I don't want to inadvertently give away any spoilers but it is a thrilling, edge of your seat rollicker of a case, a short read of only 4 hours or so, and definitely one you'll stay up all night reading!

I have loved all of the books in this series, but I found this to be the weakest.

Usually, these are police procedurals with a proper investigation, the team all participating and leads and red herrings, and all the good bits that police procedurals have. But the team was barely mentioned except in passing. There was no investigation, just them pinning their hopes on Lillian and saying, well it could be these two... no investigation into their phone signal or even properties owned by Lucy's Dad, etc.

There was just a lot of Donovan worrying, and Amy going to-and-fro on the baby. Even the hunts were largely done off the page.

I do love the series and the characters (Especially over protective Donovan) but for me this one didn't work.

In Cold Blood by Caroline Mitchell

In Cold Blood By Caroline Mitchell is book 5 in the DI Amy Winters series and it really is a fast paced, gripping crime thriller. This book is all about the Grime family, the past, the present and the future.
When women are kidnapped and kept captive for 4 days, then they are being hunted by two people. Donovan and Amy investigate and then after the third woman is found alive, Amy is kidnapped and disappears.
From then on the pace of the writing doesn’t ease off, everyone in the police team are involved, everyone in the family are involved and then…
Highly recommended

I absolutely adore the Amy Winter Series.
Summing this book up, all I can say is ‘just read the whole series’.
Amy’s team are close-knit and it’s been brilliant getting to know them over time.
When Amy is taken it was quite heart in the mouth stuff at times. A real page turner that I couldn’t put down.
The Grimes family give me the creeps, and it continues to feature in this book. The ongoing saga with her real mother carries on, Lillian is a truly twisted character.
Many thanks to the author for the early copy in which I give my honest opinion.

Fantastic series

Gripping read yet again. I've loved this series, the back story of Amy's childhood plays a big part in all the books and this one is the conclusion, therefore I recommend you read the previous books to fully appreciate and understand this one. A very tense read with Amy in grave danger made even more so because of her condition. Good twist at the end which will no doubt please all that have followed this series. Just sad that it's come to an end, would love it to continue.

Fantastic book

I hope this isn’t the last we hear from DI Amy Winter, surely there will be another book. But back to this book. After reading the previous books I was reluctant to read this one as I knew it would be the final one. I could not wait any longer and had to know what happens. I wasn’t disappointed with the book it was so good as always. Let’s hope Caroline writes another instalment. If you’ve not read the books in this series give them a go and I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Brilliant

The Any Winter series is one of the best I've ever read. Its fast paced, keeps you in suspense and leaves you wanting more. It's a true page turned and hard to put down. Amy is the daughter of serial killer parents who was adopted at age 4. She followed her adopted father into the police force, she is a loveable character with lots of quirks. I hope there is more to come in this series soon.
