Ollie lives in Deloraine, Tasmania with his aunt and uncle. They’ve never let him have a pet before. But one day, at a local truck stop, Ollie finds Rocky, a one-eyed, one-legged rooster with a taste for rotting hamburgers. Reluctantly, his uncle agrees to bring Rocky home... and it’s a disaster. Rocky tears up the flower beds, steals food, and savagely pecks anyone who tries to catch him.
But Rocky’s escapes, thefts and bird-brained antics also throw Ollie into the path of other townspeople, including vivacious Tori who moves in next door, living an alternate lifestyle with a variety of pets. Tori’s friendship gives Ollie the strength to deal with challenges, including confrontations with local bully, Dirk.
Hilarious and heart-warming – a tender exploration of individuality, courage, resilience, grief and love.
Strong characters including a one legged one eyed rooster and a very likeable boy called Ollie, who rescues Rocky, the rooster. A story of finding your way, relationships, loss and how you can recover. A touching, thought provoking story. 2023 pop sugar reading challenge- book self published.
