This is not a cover to cover read (though it certainly could be) so much as a reference book. It is very comprehensive and covers an enormous number of incidents under easy to find categories. An excellent book to browse with usually one or two pages of text with accompanying photographs and fact summary.
This is certainly a book for anybody who wishes to know more about well-known catastrophic events during history. The book spans a wide range of disasters, from the Holocaust to Chernobyl, to Twang!! and New Coke. There is a modern bias in this book, with most of these disasters taking place post-1900, but the excellent writing, able to add a few comedic lines to recounts of tragedy without seeming inappropriate, is able to totally make up for that. This is highly recommended if you want to know about some of the worst things the world has dealt with.
