Yoshihiro Togashi (冨樫義博) is a manga artist. Credited in Chinese translations as Fu Jian Yi Bo.
He began drawing manga at an early age; while he attended college, the publisher Shueisha recognized his talent. Togashi has authored numerous manga series in different genres during the past three decades. He is perhaps best known for writing and illustrating the YuYu Hakusho and Hunter × Hunter series, both of which have been published in the popular Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. Togashi is married to Naoko Takeuchi, the author of Sailor Moon.
Hey! I’m still reading this series, and it’s still great!! Of course, the “Greed Island” arc is notorious for being everybody’s least favorite part of Hunter X Hunter (also I pronounce the “X” in the title #fakefan). I specifically remember people complaining about it being way too complicated, tedious, and wordy. And the thing is… those complaints aren’t necessarily wrong, but the same reason people hate it is a major reason why I love it! From the over-explaining of the “video game mechanics” (Gon and Killua find themselves in a video game world for plot reasons) that literally never show up again in the story after this arc, to the grinding halt in action so the characters can monologue about some random new story beat that the author seemingly pulled out of nowhere, it’s just so silly… and it's so great! I also think it's funny how the whole thing culminates in a heightened, life-or-death dodge ball match! Which is actually perfect because literally what better way is there to show the readers the gravity of the situation other than centering the conflict around everybody’s most feared sport that they were forced to play in high school gym class. The match also includes the big bad from the previous arc on our hero’s side this time around! Killer clown one moment, powerful ally on the dodge ball courts the next. Like I said, it’s silly. For those who haven’t read Hunter X Hunter before, the best way that I can describe it is that it’s a little like reading a Sherlock Holmes novel, except instead of a huge revelatory summation by the detective at the end, there’s a thousand little “Sherlock Scans” throughout the story said by any of the characters. Sometimes by the main guys, sometimes by some random one-off side character who we'll never see again. It shouldn’t work, but man… it really does, every time. This series really is Yoshihiro Togashi firing on all cylinders.
The dodgeball match was of course, amazing. I liked everything about it even though the rules were detailed too much sometimes. My favorite part was when Hisoka, Killua and Gon cooperated. Urgh, I just love them.
The second part of the book was my least favorite from the beginning of the series. Even in the anime. I even liked it less than the zodiacs arc. And why? Because there are two types of villains. The one you can accept, they are evil after all and I dislike them usually but on the other hand, we have some like Bomber. I feel hatred toward him. Like intense loathing, and not the kind you're supposed to feel. I don't know how to describe him but he annoyed me. I rarely hate a character that much. So if it wasn't for the dodgeball match, I'd give it 3 stars because of the villains.
And I always wondered since Biscuit is so strong why did she look so useless? I mean she trained them alright but she'll make up for it in the next volume which is supposed to be the last before the chimera ants arc. Where we will meet Kite. Yey. I hope the manga will be as good as the anime. So fingers crossed.
My most awaited merging formation from Gon, Killua and Hisoka! That epic defense against Razor's spike was really incredible! That pulled off formation just showed how strong they are as Nen users. This is the most intense, and deadly, dodgeball game in the history of anime!
It was also revealed here that the Phantom Troupe already located the Nen purger. One of Killua's younger brother, Kalluto, also appeared and we learned that he became a member of Phantom Troupe and actually replaced the position of Hisoka.
In this part, we also saw a personality of Gon that will become his major weakness. We all knew how reckless Gon can be if we take a look at his past actions. He tend to act before thinking. Just like how he did when he challenged Genthru's group. Just after learning that Genthru's group killed the people they once with, Gon loses his control and challenge them without thinking about his and his own team's condition. He let his emotions clouded his judgement and decisions. He was showing his selfish and foolish side. The same happened in the dodgeball game.
I know that Gon and Killua's friendship is the best and sweetest friendship I've ever seen. I always envied and respected that. They've always supported each other and will definitely sacrifice their own lives for one another. I know that. But in Gon's case in that one intense game, he showed that he can be selfish when he wanted to achieve something. He wanted to win so much that even after knowing how badly injured Killua was because of his attack against Razor, he still wanted Killua to hold the ball for him. He can't give all of his strength if Killua wouldn't be the one holding the ball. Basically he was saying that Killua was giving him assurance and strength. In the surface, his words were very sweet and you kind of want to hear those words from your own bestfriend, but thinking about it, it was also kind of selfish of him. In order to reach his goal, he failed to see the conditions of those around him. He think and act just as simple-minded as he is. He only sees his goal and nothing else.
That was the difference between him and Killua. Killua actually analyzed everything before making a move. He always weighed the situation and think of the most appropriate course of action. Real strategist and the brain. Really the total opposite of Gon. But that's definitely the reason why they were so compatible. They balanced each other out.
The next battle is about to start as Gon's team faced Genthru's team. They have their plan to take down the Bomber and let see how Killua's strategy will go.
Killua gon friendship peaked again. Also, they defeated razor and his 14 devils yesssssss! Now the big showdown of the greed island arc has begun, gon killua and biscuit are facing genthru (aka the bomber) and his men. Let's goo, so in the next volume biscuit is gonna reveal her full power and I'm so ready for itttt Btw the last third or so, I understood nothing because I still don't get the greed island game rules, it's so complicated and confusing but anywayssss, 5 stars:D
The ending to the dodge ball game (started in the previous volume) didn't really go as expected, but honestly I'm so happy with how that went down... with the exception that Gon didn't really learn much about his father at all, even after all that 8'D
But they DID get the card they needed, which means that all the cards (with the exception of No. 000) have now been collected by at least one player overall... meaning that the end-game is now in sight! And now it appears time for Gon, Kil and Biscuit to face the bombers in a final showdown to see who gets to win this life-or-death game :|
Meanwhile... the Spiders appear to have found the exorcist, meaning that there'll be something else coming up in later volumes once that whole issue is sorted (Kurapika is not going to be happy)...
It's so bizarre seeing Hisoka working with Gon and Killua. Meanwhile we've got the final stretch to passing the game going on in the back half of the volume.
GON. KILLUA. HISOKA. never thought i would say it but GOATED TRIO. killua doing the heavy lifting and hisoka fucking carrying omg. the end of that dodgeball fight was great. and now we are starting our final battle of the arc. all of them about to do their one-v-ones and I'm excited to see my GOATS clutch up
The dodge-ball match was without question action packed. Gon being as stubborn as always, wishes for a full-on confrontation during the match. Out of this match, there are many noteworthy moments such as the cooperation presented by Hisoka, Killua, and Gon to receive the ball, or Hisoka's use of Bungee Gum (and breaking all of his fingers while doing so) in order to finish the match, but the most noteworthy one has to be Killua's unwavering determination and belief in gone. He unquestioningly and without complaining, demonstrating his pain or regarding the permanent injuries such actions could present, he held the ball for Gon in order for him to be able to store up all his strength. Now, during their preparations for the big fight against Genthru, we see that even Gon has limitations. He is unquestionably extremely talented, but here we see that he has limitations, like any person, on how much he can develop quickly, making him even more realistic. Killua is quick to devise a plan so that when the battle begins earlier than expected, they are able to begin with some confidence.

The dodgeball match was the best idea ever. Stuff like that is why I love Manga so much. It's so creative and weird, but layered and narratively solid. I still think the west falls far behind Japan when it comes to storytelling.
A lot of this focused on the dodgeball game, which was admittedly a bit drawn out. However, the ending and some of the other twists and revelations were pretty good.
