Wow!
What an awesome, riveting, rollercoaster, paranormal fantasy read, with a dash of horror from the amazing pen of Ms. Constantine!
This book has it all!

When Crew (Gorgeous hunky, Crew...sigh!) learns a little of the truth of who he is from his dying father, then the story begins, (along with Sage, who's on her own quest, too, and to whom he's drawn to since they first met.) As the truth of the past is unearthed, I got sucked in. This story wouldn't let go until I found out all I needed to know. And rejoiced, with a 'hell, ya!!!' when the villain got his comeuppance, and in a way that left me totally satisfied! --LOL.

The world-building for Defy the Stars is phenomenal. It grabbed me and kept me first in the lovely Alderwood, then the terrifying, icy Wintervine. The mix of genre and mystical, magical beings--I loved everything about it!

Yeah, the romance might not have been the focus of this tale (big romance lover here :D), but I loved the fact the author kept the couple together through the story and enjoyed their dynamics.

In all, a thrilling read with some heartstopping moments.

Crew grew up as a grunt at the magical Circus Faire, and he never thought himself anything special. Sure, the girls liked the look of him, but only Sage ever worked her way into his heart. It's been three years since they last seen each other, and both of them had blossomed in many ways. Crew and Sage both have unusual powers, which they must keep hidden or be hunted by the King of Hawkswing. Crew discovers a cruel wizard has his brother held captive, and the evil doctor has taken Sage's sisters as well as bait to lure her to his laboratory. Neither of them can resist the urge to save their families. Yet will they end up being on of the doctor's poor victims as well?

This is a great YA fantasy with so many layers. The world it takes place in is large. Eons ago, normal mortals separated themselves from magical beings and now they live in different lands. There is a lot of history that goes unsaid in this book, but it leaves room for so much growth. In the magical lands, there are quaint little villages and beautiful sprawling cities, but we see mostly Sage's small town and the traveling circus. The circus itself is huge, and once it sets up in a new place, it's open 24 hours a day until it leaves again. It's full of magic and wonders, and the details about it were marvelous. I wanted to spend more time at the circus but the story takes us to darker places. Crew has worked at the circus for as long as he can remember, and it's home to him. He is bold and good hearted next to Sage's stubborn, defiant, and compassionate soul. Each of them are discovering their newly developing powers, but even as they do, they're targeted for that very magic. I adore Sage's family and the cast of characters at the circus are so much fun. My favorite was Madame Rouge. I bet she has a whole saga of stories just her own! I have no idea if this is going to be a series, but this book sets the scene for a great epic. Highly recommended.

Defy the Stars was an interesting and intriguing read with compelling characters. Crew learns some hard truths from his father, who’s on his deathbed. Now, he has tough decisions to make about his future and the future of their enchanted Circus Faire. He’s been warned that the King of Hawkswing is determined to eradicate a certain species, and for his own sake Crew must keep his formidable gifts under wraps.

When Crew learns a dark wizard is holding his brother captive, he enters into a deal with him in hopes of getting close enough to free those he has imprisoned. Yet, what he uncovers is far more sinister than Crew could ever imagine.

Crew met Sage in the town the circus visited. He is excited to meet her again when the circus visits the town again. But, it turns out that Sage and her family are caught in the middle of the dark wizard’s plan. Crew and Sage have to work together with their growing powers to defeat the wizard and save themselves.

The world created here was very exciting. We got to see many different magical creatures living amongst each other. Relations between interspecies caused an imbalance of power and now are strictly forbidden. I did not expect the direction the plot took and was pleasantly surprised.

The characters were heart-warming and I loved watching them grow as characters as the plot progressed. Crew and Sage processed the revelations and worked through well. I enjoyed watching them take on the expectations of others and protect their loved ones.

The story was exciting and intriguing every step of the way. The pace set was comfortable to read through and made the book intriguing.

Thank you to the author and BOMM for sending me an ARC to review!

This books follows Crew and Sage. They are in a circus together. The main quest for Crew and Sage is to stop the ringmaster (I don't want to give more details away ) The beginning of the book has world building, and explains a lot of monsters, and then it gets into the main story.

Crew learns that his father isn't who he thinks he is, on his father's death bed. Crew also has to deal with his brother being held captive by a dark wizard, and that's only just the beginning.

Crew meets sage and it turns out her family is also dealing with the dark wizard.

This world building was needs a bit of work, but the over story and character growth is amazing.

I would like to think the author and book of matches media for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Defy the Stars is a young adult fantasy book about Crew and Sage. Both need to survive and escape from the wizard’s wicked plans.

“Be wary of the stars foretelling your destiny…”

I was really intrigued by the idea of a circus being the background and playground for this book and story. I was curious to see how the magic of a circus would complement the story.

The story started off with an introduction to both main characters, Crew and Sage, and their lives before all the events start. It is a nice way to get a feel for both characters. One thing I did notice from the very beginning were the many different creatures in the world and it was a bit hard to keep track of them all. I think the story would’ve benefited from less creatures being in the story. I also think that because so many were thrown in, the important ones such as Dolorans weren’t really explained, which left some confusion.

The worldbuilding left a lot to be imagined. Everything seemed really vaguely descripted and I couldn’t get a good feel of the world and it’s magic system. I feel like the idea was really good, but the execution wasn’t. The circus, which I had expected to be the main backdrop, wasn’t and I don’t really feel like I have a good grasp on the circus, it’s acts and everything.

The plot as well was really hard for me to follow along and to understand. While the dual POV was nice and complementary, the story itself was confusion. While having read around 1/3th of the story I still didn’t really understand where the story was going and was confused at what was happening and how it would/was contributing to the overall plot.

The writing style was nice to follow along, but the formatting sometimes was really hard to distinguish between what was happening. At a certain point a memory of flashback happened at the very start of a chapter, after some sort of cliffhanger on the chapter before. Since the formatting was exactly the same and I didn’t understand that it was a memory/flashback, which left me feeling like I missed something while reading. Only when at the end it was mentioned that a memory was told it became clear why it didn’t continue the story. This happened a few times and it would’ve been better if the formatting was different to better distinguish that happening and to easier follow along the story.

The characters themselves were a bit forgettable and seemed quite childish. They didn’t feel the ages they were said to have. Sage in particular really seemed to have mood swings which were giving me whiplash and often didn’t seem appropriate or unbelievable. Due to these mood swings or sudden hostility, the chemistry between her and Crew was unbelievable and seemed non-existing.

Overall, I feel like this book has very good potential, but it needed to be fleshed out a lot better. Because the confusion I kept having and the characters I didn’t really like I feel quite indifferent to this book, it being neither good or bad.

Fast-paced and filled with magic and danger, DEFY THE STARS was a unique take on the circus theme. What I intially thought was going to be a more whimsical feeling story, this book turned out to be much darker and definitely more sinister, which I definitely enjoyed.⁣

Reminiscent of the Market of Monsters series and Rachel Vincent's Menagerie series, the story centers around a circus with an evil ringmaster who experiments on magical beings in hopes of creating a super race of magical folks. Crew and Sage are both intertwined with the circus and the ringmaster, albeit for differing reasons, but their connection eventually leads them back together to try and stop what's happening at the circus.⁣

This is a book that's perfect for readers who like their fantasy a little darker. Had this been the whimsical tale I was expecting, I don't think I'd have enjoyed it quite as much. I really liked the world the author created and all of the supernatural and mythological beings within the circus, and I enjoyed the unique spin on the overall circus theme. The characters were delightful as well, I really enjoyed Sage and Crew's friendship and the little hint of romance we got.⁣

All told, an exciting and danger-filled tale from start to finish. The ending alludes to a bit of story still left to tell, so I'm hoping we get to revisit this world in the future. Many thanks to @bookofmatchesmedia and @cathrinaconstantine6004 for having me on the arc tour and providing a digital copy of the book.⁣

3.5-3.8 - still undecided.

Defy The Stars is a dark (darker than I thought it would be), magical, exciting and intriguing fantasy read. I enjoyed the writing style and the pictures the author painted, within certain scenes. It was a fast-paced read, although I did find myself needing to pause to process some elements.

I thought the characters were great and I liked how their stories intertwined with each other and the friendship that blossomed between Crew and Sage.

I've always been pulled to books with a circus theme/setting, so of course Defy The Stars caught my attention straight away. Constantine created a captivating world around the circus backdrop and brought something unique to it. For me, the reason why I am leaning more towarda 3.5 stars...there was not enough romance (just personal taste) and at times it was slightly confusing, but again, could just be me.

I was told this was a standalone, but I have a feeling, with the way things ended, there is more that can be explored with this world. I think if you enjoy dark fantasy with a splash of romance and mythical creatures, this is a book for you.

This was a tale packed with adventure! To me, this is a true mix of Carnival Row, the Night Circus and the epic fantasy adventures we all love. The circus setting was magical and full of intrigue and I liked that the reader still got a sense of wonder while reading the scenes where the characters are exploring the Circus Faire.

I also really liked that we got to see Sage and Crew grow into themselves and their magic. The different magical beings they encounter on their quest are diverse and great additions to the story!

I did wish for a tiny bit more world building - I still have so many questions lol and in the throws of the action, the story can get a bit rushed and a tad choppy. But overall, a fast paced and enjoyable read! Do note it was darker than I first anticipated, especially when it comes to that doctor! 😨😨

Rating: 3.75 rounded to 4/5

Content warnings: violence, blood, gore, death (by fire, sickness & other means), kidnapping, imprisonment, torture.

A huge thanks to the author and Book of Matches Media for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

This was a creative, imaginative and intriguing story. I was captivated by the interesting and exceptional characters, plus the Circus Faire was a unique setting to have as the background to this story. It was slightly dark, intense, creepy at times and with some interesting magical and fantasy elements.

Crew has unique talents that have put him in the spotlight of a dark and sinister wizard. Unbeknownst to Crew, this dark wizard is also torturing other creatures and individuals with unique talents all for his dark circus. Crew finds Sage (a woman also with mysterious and unique talents) and together they will try whatever they can to stop the wizard (ringmaster) and save his brother. But not everything goes according to plan.

I enjoyed the connection that Crew and Sage have and how it slowly developed over the course of the story. They continually pulled me in and had me captivated by what was happening.

Overall, I enjoyed this story and its unique storyline.

This was an interesting and unique read!

Crew learns from his dying father Polk that not only is he not actually Polk’s son, but that the ringmaster of the Circus Faire where he works likes to experiment on magical people trying to get the “master race”. And this ringmaster called the doctor has his younger brother and he wants Sage too, a girl Crew met 3 years ago, who also seems to have mysteriously strong powers. Crew decides to try to find his brother and save and keep Sage safe too, but not everything goes quite as planned.

I will admit this book was not quite what I expected 😂 I’m not sure what I expected, but I really enjoyed it nonetheless!

I really found the world interesting. There are many different mythical beings and creatures. We experience the circus life a bit, but it mainly focuses on Crew’s story as well as Sage, and their journey trying to stop the ringmaster or the doctor.

There’s a bit of romance, but not a lot, so if you don’t really like reading romance, I think you’ll enjoy this one a lot! I will say this book was darker and a bit more graphic than I expected so that was a bit of a twist for me 😅

There’s a found family with family. Sage has many siblings and I love how close they are and I love how their relationships build through the story and includes more along with Crew.

Overall, this was a unique fantasy read and I’m assuming there’s another book after the way this one ended, I need some loose ends tied up please! 😂

I received a free digital copy to read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Audiobook: This was my first experience with Cathrina Constantine's work, and I enjoyed it a lot. Crew decided to look for his brother who might be held by a dark wizard. Sage was looking for her siblings, and she was concerned that they might be held by the dark wizard. When they joined together in their searches, chaos ensued. The world building was extensive. The characters were dark and complicated. I liked all the various and unique fantastical creatures that abounded throughout the tale. The surprising twists kept my attention. Krista Walker's narration was great, and her performance added to the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

"Defy the Stars" by Cathrina Constantine introduces readers to Crew, a circus grunt with extraordinary talents, and Sage, a Doloran hunted for her intense powers. In a world where interspecies relations are strictly forbidden, Crew and Sage must rely on each other to survive. When Crew discovers that a dark wizard is holding his brother captive, he strikes a deal with him to free the imprisoned. However, what he uncovers is far more sinister than he imagined. As the stakes rise, Crew must tap into his inner strength to save his brother, Sage, and others from the wizard's clutches.

I couldn't get into the style of the audiobook narrator on audible.co.uk, I found the accents quite off-putting and I stopped listening as it was preventing me from getting into the story.
I might try to re read this as the text only version from Kindle Unlimited in future.
I received a free copy of this book and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

A little too ya for me. I just didn’t gel well with either mmc or fmc to contemplate continuing the series if there’s a second book. Narration was ok but I did find myself drifting off from time to time. 2.5/3 star listen

Be Wary of the Stars Foretelling Your Destiny...

Review of Defy the Stars

Defy the Stars took me a little bit to get into but once I did I enjoyed this magical story! I really like how many different magical creatures were in this fantasy world. I enjoyed getting to know Sage and Crew throughout the story. It was interesting to see this story unfold.

There was just a little bit of romance! If you like only a little romance in your books and a magical world I think you would like this one! This book was a little more on the darker and graphic side just a heads up!

if you enjoy Carnival Row (TV Show), and books by Holly Black, Elise Kova, and Casey L. Bond then you should check this one out!

3.5 stars for this magical story focusing on Sage and Crew. I listened to the audio and found it a little hard to follow what was happening at times. I enjoyed the alternating points of view and the magical aspects. There was an adventure and a few twists which were great. Crew and Sage discovered who they really were and friendships were forged. A nice listen.
