The Melody of Longbourn

Rate this book
For over two hundred years, the Bennett’s of Longbourn have held their lands; through good and bad times, the love of their land has continued unabated. Longbourn is a middle-sized estate, located in Hertfordshire, close to the market town of Meryton. Thomas Harrison Bennett is now the master, he, unfortunately is a somewhat slovenly man. He feels with Longbourn being entailed, and the fact he has fathered only daughters…There is really no need to try and improve the estate, as he would lose it one day to the Collin’s side of the family. He has no regrets as he knows his family will be well taken care of, when he goes on to his final reward.
Yet if he had applied himself to nourishing the land; the income could have doubled or mayhap even tripled! Instead, Thomas languishes in his study reading his books and drinking his favorite port. And so with each year that passes, the estate’s income is neglected, until it almost reaches the point of near poverty. It does not help at all, that his wife is a horror! A woman who is vain and of mean to little understanding of…well anything, save fashion and setting a good table. Franny Lydia Bennett lives for gossip and buying any and everything her heart desires. As she feels being the mistress of a fine estate, she must show all of Meryton, she is secure in her place as the first lady of their society.
But Thomas Bennett has a secret, a huge secret in fact! His mother, Olivia Fiona Bennett is a McKnight!! The wealthiest, most powerful, well-connected family in the entire world! That would include all the Royals and the American President. Everyone in Scotland, England, and everywhere else across the globe, knows of the famed McKnight’s! Everything from their wealth, their prowess in war, to their impossible feats of what some believed to be…magic!
The whole of the world, is also well aware of one other thing, with a surety, about the McKnight’s, and that thing is, one does not betray a McKnight, ever! In any way shape or form! To betray the McKnight clan is a death sentence in every way!
When Thomas’s girls begin to show McKnight gifts or abilities, Thomas contacts his famous relations and invites them to Longbourn. It is there, where he learns, his daughters are not only blessed with McKnight gifts, they are four of the notes to a SONG, rightly named, THE MELODY OF HEAVEN, that could bring about an incredible change to the world of not only MANKIND, but DEMONS and ANGELS as well.
Now the Bennett ladies are in danger, of the supernatural kind! They are being relentlessly hunted, by every abominable creature of the Darkness that can be called upon; for all of Hell would give anything to see them dead!
Yet…. All of Heaven is determined to keep them safe!

Note from Author: This novel is a totally new re-imagining for the Bennett’s of Longbourn. It’s a different world, to be sure. Yet it is still a world filled with excitement, amusement, and of course everlasting LOVE! Please note this author is well aware the wealth spoken about in this novel is exaggerated to the extreme. I hope you understand why, as you read the book, and learn more of the McKnight clan! Good reading! Oh and well, I kinda got carried away with the swooning, LOL!

I'm outta here at 12% read.

I didn't have a good feeling from the beginning. I had difficulty with "Bennett" but this sentence shows up at 1%:
A little batting of the eyes, a kiss or two and maybe an intimate touch here and there, that could be assumed to be accidental or if she were lucky, a compromise. And wala!!

I understand that not everyone speaks French. I don't but I do recognize the written word.

The book has enough errors to be irritating but it isn't impossible to read.

The story put me off. I didn't read far enough to know if the McKnights were magical or under the influence of the Prince of Darkness. I just wasn't interested.

hard to review….. hard to finish

The good:
This author has a lot of imagination
The story, though somewhat ridiculous (in Bennet gifts, Bennet wealth, etc) is interesting.

The bad:
This reads like it’s written by a non English speaker. Commas are vomited everywhere regardless of whether needed. Sentence fragments abound. Verb tenses are constantly wrong. Wrong word choices are also plentiful- a vivacious future, girth your loins, etc.

This author needs a competent editor. There are many Fanfiction groups on Facebook and the like where authors can find free beta readers if cost is an issue. I would love to see this author publish a grammatically inoffensive story. This is my second of this authors books. It might be my last.

I only marked or highlighted for the first half of the book. 118 marks/notes. I would return for a refund if I didn’t have kindle unlimited.

DNF I enjoyed her other work, "To Wake The Sleeping Dragon", although it needed further editing. I ran away quickly after the beginning 15 pages of errors in this one. Just too much to ignore or scan past. You might like it. I didn't.

Great story but a cliff hanger and in great need of editing

First, I don't usually ding authors on editing, but this one really needs edited. Bought is used where brought should be and brought is used where bought should be - literally every time. There is a massive overuse of commas and they're used in the wrong place (using 's instead of just s). There is also a lot of ellipses and making phrases spaced out in weird spots that messes with the flow of reading.

That being said I thought it was really interesting for a WAY out there variation. Magical powers, time traveling (in a way), a massive good vs evil plot, Lady Catherine, Caroline, and Mr. Collins are super evil. The Bennetts are related to people with massive fortunes. Soul mates and quickly falling in love abound. But it ends with a huge cliffhanger that I was hoping I could just pick up in the next book - but it's not published yet (I went back to find this was published only weeks before I read it). While I usually don't do fantasy versions this one was actually quite engaging. You do have to work on keeping everyone straight as not only are there the normal set of characters, she adds in characters from Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, and also adds on some very prominent new characters. I'm curious to read the next books when they come out.

A good story

A somewhat incredible adventure, with interesting characters and diverse situations that keeps you turning pages, but I really don't like the cliff hanger at the end.

Absolutely wonderful!

I stopped giving 5stars several years ago because even great stories lacked something as simple as either making me laugh or causing me to wake up at 3am wondering what happened next. This story has everything - mystery, murder, vampires, demons, unicorns, magic, time traveling, special gifts, rich Scottish Dukes, an abundance of stupid people, an abundance of plots , and an amazing amount of men " swooning". It doesn't focus primarily on Darcy and Elizabeth but on 3 families - The Earl of Matlock ( Fitzwilliam), the Thomas Bennet of Longbourne, and introducing The McKnight family from Scotland and England. ( possessing numerous titles, more money than the top 100 billionaires of today, and gifted with numerous supernatural powers). Its downright wonderful!!

A Pride and Prejudice variation where Mr Bennet starts as his useless self, Mrs Bennet favours her youngest Lydia. But Bennet is connected to the world famous, vastly wealthy McKnights who if rumour is true dabble in magic. The daughters gifts start to show themselves all but those of Lydia. Why. What will be the result, enemies are made including non-humans. Many will try to destroy the Bennets.
An entertaining, way out of character variation but with a cliff hanger. Waiting on Part 2

Excellent story

I love this story. It took several chapters to really get going but from then on it was a paranormal festival. Can't wait for the other to come about.

loved the story

I really liked the story and the humour but please the spelling leaves a lot to be desired. You can guess usually what the right words are meant to be,but it is distracting

Marvelous!

I'm a great fan and avid reader of many Pride and Prejudice Variations, especially those that are written out of the box. This was the most exceptional, extraordinary and exciting one I've read yet! A great storyline that has one so engrossed, not wanting to put the book down to eat or sleep. It had me laughing out loud several times that left me wanting to give it a review. Lots of things happening in several directions the will keep you on your toes.

I actually would like to give this book 4 stars for two reasons, one, it's a continuation (I have no patience to wait) for conclusions.
Two, there are comments as a character describes their feelings about something and repeats it two or three times in the same paragraph. Honestly, once is enough. But, the tale and humor out weighs those annoying circumstances and I didn't want to diminish the authors hard work with my pet peeves.

Yes, I would reread this story again... because I intend to wait until the third book, 'The Song of Longbourn' is released to continue this saga, which could be many many months from now that I will need to refresh myself with this tale.

Quite interesting and funny - Not just a Darcy & Elizabeth love story

I can’t believe I am saying this but I have started enjoying the P&P variations that do not focus on Darcy and Elizabeth’s love story as much, I know blasphemy. I think it is because many authors misinterpret Elizabeth and make her out to be sort of horrible because Darcy called her tolerable. I like the variations that have a plot that any characters can be used, and this is what Selene Garrou does with her novels. The story itself is quite interesting and I laughed out loud a lot during the reading.

Of course the McKnights are basically perfect and completely unbelievable but I enjoyed them nonetheless. The only negative I can say is that the book is longer than it should have been because sometimes I could really careless about a dress someone is wearing or how their hair was done. I would skim those paragraphs.

Even though I am reviewing Book 1, I have also read Book 2 (the villains are dealt with in a different way, although satisfying) and am now waiting on Book 3. Maybe then they will sing the Song of Redemption, finally.

Love the premise of this book. As a rule, I do not read unfinished books or incomplete sagas. I am just too impatient and need the closure. I found this book and was so intrigued by the overview I risked it and am not disappointed. I have read this repeatedly and find something new to either laugh at or ponder every time. The fact that the wealth, or lack thereof, of the families is so absolutely outrageous it brings into perspective the social and financial situations of that era and makes it difficult not to laugh at them, so bring on the swooning, I loved it! By just hinting at what is yet to be explained and all the loose ends that are still out there, you get just enough to whet your appetite by having enough settled in this book, to feel satisfied while still being eager to learn the rest of the story. I am patiently (well trying to be anyway) awaiting the rest of the Saga. Please finish this as soon as possible!

Enjoyable, long and detailed but wish I had paid attention that it was only volume 1

Had I realized this was only volume 1, I probably would have waited to read it to decide if the series was something I'd want to continue.

Some editing is needed as in many areas the word "most" is used instead of "much", and other issues.

However, the storyline is interesting and fantastical. While some of those we love to hate get their due, we're left hanging to see what happens. We don't know who survives to the next volume. A great battle is yet to be resolved, the song of redemption yet to be sung. A ball and several weddings yet to celebrated.

Love the Bennett's and the McKnight's and all suitor pairings. Hoping to see these characters overcome all obstacles with little to no collateral damage.

Had borrowed the book through unlimited but, since the next volume won't be out until summer, decided to purchase to refresh my memory before next volume.

Interesting, involved fantasy variation. Extremely creative and detailed. The fast pace holds your attention, though there are some odd plot additions that just seem to be used to make the book longer and don't add to the main story at all, thus delaying the stated intent to the next book(s).
This is a trilogy where the other 2 parts aren't available anywhere I can find, as yet, so this one leaves you, quite literally, hanging. I would not have spent these many hours had I known.
I found the style of writing reminiscent of Shana Granderson's works, also entertaining, far-fetched, and poorly edited. As a previous military editor and university prof, I automatically edit in my head but it can get tedious after several hours of chopped sentences with misplaced commas and periods in the midst of thoughts.

I'm so ANGRY! No resolution!

This is the second book I've read by this author that does not have an ending with a hint of a next book that does not materialize. The reader is left at the height of the action. The story was good but at times became chaotic. There were a number of typos and punctuation errors. Additionally, there was an excessive amount of religious affirmation. While I could differentiate the various characters, I had a hard time with everyone instantly becoming Mc Knight family members and being referred to as Uncle, Cousin, Brother and Sister. Lastly, the author pulled in the main characters from both Persuasion and Northanger Abby with no real purpose.

So very, very sad. This tale has no ending to speak of "Boom. World goes white!" 730 pages to leave everybody hanging. Sigh.
The author, while highly creative, has many, many glaring problems in her English usage.
Dual- is two. Duel is a fight. Relegate and regulate are not the same. Implied "Propriety" but used a different, unrelated word.
Apostrophe use for many plurals is consistently incorrect. Book's is not how to write plurals.
He said it "to he" and I. Him. Ugh. Really?! This he instead of him is annoying.
This had potential but so many unresolved threads and such awkward English. Sigh. Disappointed.

Reasonable story let down

The story is engaging though other than using the names of the characters and locations the story has nothing to do with Pride and Prejudice.
The story line is let down by poor editing.
1. A minimum of one spelling mistake/incorrect word choice per page
2. Repetition of the same information
3. Overly descriptive
4. Really quite preachy
The book needs someone to seriously edit it and correct the spelling and word choice, cut some of the repetition which would tone down the preachy nature as a matter of course.

Good idea, poor delivery

The idea is intriguing and captivating. Unfortunateĺy the delivery is sorely lacking. The book is full of misplaced puctuation signs, wrong use of tenses, outrageous misused words (that sound remotely as the intended ones) and useless repetitions of facts which make the reading tedious. Let alone employing a professional editor, I wish that the author would have read their manuscript before piblishing it.
That being said, I am looking forward to find out what happens next. Hopefully in a more polished form.

Ugh! Does the writer have so much imagination that she must change the spelling for every word depending on the page? Yes there are homonyms in the English language but that doesn't mean the words are interchangeable!

If you can get through the lack of editing, then there is the impossible premise that God needs humans to help Him fight the war against the demons and that said humans will have enough power to be helpful. Not even plausible let alone possible!

I couldn't get through this for a number of reasons, but that was the main one. Don't get hooked! It's demonic!

This is ridiculous but it's a lot of fun. There are some grammar issues and word switches (priorities in place of proprieties, saffron instead of chiffon? I think) but I could let them slide for the laughs and the satisfaction of reading about Mary kicking Caroline Bingley in the face. I can never get enough of Caroline Bingley getting kicked in the face. I can't say how many times I wished to see her get slapped upside the head so watching it happen is absolutely delightful! One star for that alone! Don't take this one seriously; just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Another interesting story

I love Selene Garrou’s books! She develops such interesting stories. The one drawback is the last two I read (including this one) were left without a completion to the story. I am left waiting for the next book.

Now about this book… it had a lot more fantasy then I normally would be interested in but it was done in a way that did not turn me off. I was slightly turned off at the heavy emphasis on religion which was not in her other books (which I rated 5 stars) but I just skimmed pass it. Please, please finish the story!

I am eager for the next

5 Easy stars for a book that kept me riveted to each and every word. At times kept me laughing so hard I was literally in tears. Every time the girls triumphed , And took great joy In a story that proves women can be powerful even in the early 19th century. I am eagerly awaiting the next book In this fantastic story line...... I hope I don't have a long wait.

3 stars for the story’s potential!

As I read various JAFF, I often highlight the typos as I read. This book had so many grammatical errors, I quit highlighting them at about 25% into the book. It is a shame, as the story line was unique and interesting but too mired in typos and poor grammar. That said, please keep writing as I am looking forward to the next book in this imaginative series and would love to see more of your creativity coupled with improved grammar.

Good

This was a very good storyline! My only problem is where is the next book??!! I have read a couple of good books of this author's, but I would like to have the ending books of this and her new book. I would like to give a five-star review but can't until I can get the next books. I understood this to be a three book story, so please give me the next books to read! I would like to know if there's a HEA for our dear couples!

wanted to give this more stars…

… but I just couldn’t. Interesting premise, but horribly written. Author has multiple commas in almost every sentence, and goes back and forth between present and past tense in the narrative. It definitely needs massive proofreading, and I hope that happens for the next one.

Loved the story, cool twist on P&P characters

The story was great, kept me engaged, and tried to move quickly through the book because i was so curious to know what was next! However, it is difficult to read due to all of the extra commas, apostrophes, and spelling mistakes. REALLY needs an editor!

Could not put it down!

Actually, I have to give this book 4 1/2 stars, not 5 because of the tons, TONS, of punctuation errors! My God, it was difficult to understand what I was reading at times. I mean, come on! Who messed up this glorious book with all of these senseless errors! Loved the swooning, though!

WHAT????

This is a beautiful book—however!!!!
It ends in a cliffhanger! No warnings of this being book one, no no no!!!
I stayed up many a night enjoying the changes of characters but still being the same core person just amplified.
I Love how our Lord is significant and meaningful without being judgmental.
I hate how it ends…

I don’t usually write a review on just the book’s description but this one is so riddled with errors I had too!

Let’s start with the name of the main family of Pride and Prejudice being misspelled. Then there are the unnecessary possessives instead of the plural

Never.

Entertaining

Very enjoyable story. Aside from the numerous grammar errors, I enjoyed this variation. I personally would have stopped short of bringing modern personal care items and listing the cost of perfume, but overall nicely done.
