"If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it."
—Jesus of Nazareth
Jesus invites us to a life of surrender. True discipleship involves the recognition that he is King and we are not, and this awareness compels us to give him everything we call our own. In his book Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis put it like "Christ says, 'Give me all. I don't want so much of your time and so much of your money and so much of your I want you. I have not come to torment your natural self, but to kill it. No half-measures are any good.'"
If we answer this call to give up our own agenda and follow him, Jesus promises something much more valuable in real life. The pages of Scripture reveal the surrendered life is one of sacrifice—but also joy and adventure.
