The murders may be over, but my heartache is back in full force, thanks to my mother and my own misgivings.
When I return to Winter Grove early and end up relying on the pack to help me out, I’m sure it’s a new form of torture. Instead, I find myself growing closer to August and Foster. I can’t help but think they’re dragging me deeper underwater, with no intention of letting me up for air anytime soon.
To add to the confusion, a new arrival at the university has a grudge against the pack, and she knows that getting to them is easier when she’s targeting anyone who’s more vulnerable than the boys.
And that might include me, despite how much I want to stay out of it.
But when she goes after my place at Winter Grove and the pack that I might be willing to call my own, will I just let her? Or will I take a few lessons from my vile boys and show her I’m not so quick to surrender?
Wicked Girl is the second book in the Knot Their Toy duet and includes omegaverse, M/M, poly, and bullying.
AJ Merlin would rather write epic love stories than live them. I mean, who wants to limit themselves to only falling in love once? She is obsessed with dark fantasy, true crime, and also dogs. From serial killers to voyeurs all the way down to the devil himself, AJ's specialty is in writing irredeemable heroes who somehow still manage to captivate their heroines (and her readers).
This conclusion was so good 😊. This book again had me feeling like the dynamics of the group were more in the background to the actual harem part - like “omega light”. The affection between the boys was also very frequent and so naturally written. Loved it!!
“Budding psychopath?” I raise my brows as Foster rolls his eyes. “That’s a little insulting.”
“I know,” he agrees dryly. “Just because I have interests—”
“I would’ve dropped the ‘budding’ and said ‘rampant’ instead,” I break in before he can finish. Foster pauses, a smirk twitching at his lips.
“Oh, you’re funny,” he tells me, flicking my nose. “You’re just so funny aren’t you, when we’re in a car so I can’t do anything to you? Bet I could, though. Bet I still could.”
20% in and I’m about to DNF. I can’t stand it when it seems like authors don’t read their own books.
Suddenly Mercy is from Chicago rather than Ohio (a pretty big change, given how she made it seem like spending the rest of her life as an omega in the middle of nowhere was a big problem).
Suddenly Foster and August have no families they need to be with over holiday break, despite at least August being from a mega-wealthy family that certainly wouldn’t have stuck him, at any point, in what seems to be a very average suburban house.
Suddenly Amelia is the worst smelling and worst behaving alpha ever—after Mercy specifically describing her pleasant vanilla and spice smell and her friendly approach and invitation to practice together the only other time they have met.
Suddenly Foster didn’t explicitly already have sex with Mercy last semester.
Dorian is off on a once a year trip with his father to Europe—using the chance to visit cities he hasn’t been to yet. Yes, like mega wealthy children of Bezos-like fathers have to cling to once per year vacations in order to try to see as much of Europe as possible lest they never get the chance to travel, what?
Suddenly Mercy’s mother would be upset, for some reason, that Mercy was getting to know the pack of the richest, most powerful boys in school and insulting her for “settling for the first pack that shows an interest” after we have been told exactly how focused she is on getting Mercy to attract a pack. Riiiiight.
Knocked this one down to three stars because it's relatively short (under 300 pages, IIRC) and the plot basically vanishes. But I still love the characterisation, and how the heroine spends extra time in this book with the two heroes who got less page time in the first book. It feels like a properly balanced RH.
Well this was meh. Lots of mistakes compared to the first book. The school is somehow in New York instead of Maine now, Adrian is now named Callum, Dorian's scent is different, etc. Some of the events of the prior book are kind of skewed when referred back to them. August and Foster are supposedly into sadism/masochism but that was totally dropped in this book.
The characters were very one dimensional and not much chemistry.
I did finish both books but won't be scrambling to read more by this author.
I'm actually in love with these characters. Their dynamic in this book was so good omfg. Foster cracked me up 💀 and Dorian and August were so fhfhfhf 🤭🤭 (the smut in this book oml).
Everything I wanted from the previous book was here- and my only issue with this is that it wasn't longer. I can't believe it's over already 🥲.
I guess it's time to read everything by this author now bye 💀.
Wasn't a fan of this one to start with. Starts with the awful mother, then the guys being sickly sweet and sex. Nonstop sex. Add in the return of Amelia and Petra, instead of Vile boys its mean girls. The guys were obvious in what they wanted, showing how much Mercy's mother has messed her up.
It got better with the sex slowing down and the lack of awful roommate. Once they were together it was sweet, but not too over the top. I liked the card game, Dorian finally losing and how okay he was with it. I also liked Dorian's little gift giving, wearing Mercy down. There were lots of little cute pack bits. Dorian was defo my fave character.
Not the ending I expected. For a moment there I thought there was going to be cliffy, with Petra getting stabby. Instead, it was a re-hash of their last argument, which felt a little anti-climactic. Would've been nice to see Dorian put the mother in her place.
Omegaverse fluff with the bullying a thing of the past. Plenty of sex, kink and strong on the m/m.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I liked the dynamic of the pack once it became official. I do wish that they were more direct in their feelings and felt it easier to say ILY, but that really wasn't on brand for them characteristically.
Honestly, the author should have just actually added an ending to the first book. This one was somewhat confusing. Honestly, a good deal of Mercy’s feelings were accurate to that of an emotionally abused child. So it’s not necessarily the self doubt and need for clarification and validation that she needs that is the problem. It’s that the first book had a hint of mystery that kept the reader’s mind occupied away from the storyline issues and this one does not. The author tried to add in a little bit of mystery. But honestly it was VERY poorly done. Spoiler alert but it was ABUNDANTLY clear that the attack on Foster is the core incident. And everyone sliding to it made it clear. So the major climax that Blaise was responsible for both attacks is not a mystery to the reader. So much so that when Merced “solved” the mystery it leaves the reader confused. Because there was nothing to solve but she did it anyway. And I do agree that the issue with her mother was swept under the rug after being repeatedly discussed through both books. And all of that is topped off by the fact that the ending was a flop. It seriously ended very much like the first. But there is no third book planned. So unfortunately the second book is a flop compared to the second.
Overall an enjoyable book, but it was plagued with consistency and editing issues. In the first book, Mercy is described as liking Amelia’s scent and even being a bit attracted to her, but now it’s the worst scent. Amelia is an alpha who in no way acts like an alpha. Mercy interacts with Amelia is close quarters, but the alpha-omega dynamic vanishes. Reflecting on the second book, it’s barely an Omegaverse book.
Mercy’s home changes locations. Names were misused several times, leading to confusing sentences (like using Amelia’s name when she means Cecily). Other reviewers have pointed out other inconsistencies that I didn’t even notice.
The plot was weak. Why did Amelia hold such a huge grudge? Why did Foster get attacked in the first place? Why didn’t Austin or Dorian recognize the attacker when according to the first book, they intervened in the original attack? Why didn’t someone tell Petra to put earbuds in to listen to music?
Also, the boys got defanged. They weren’t good people in the first book. But now they kind of are and are perfectly pleasant to everyone.
3.75⭐️ love love love the first book and the first half of this book. I was sooo excited to finish this and so suspicious of the guys at first , but I have so many unanswered questions.. like i feel a little let down with that ending. :/
TITLE: Wicked Girl GENRE: New Adult Romance AUTHOR: AJ Merlin TROPE: College, PNR, Omegaverse, Enemies-to-Lovers TYPE: Series (Knot Their Toy Book 2) POV: Single POV MY RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5
Wicked Girl is the second book in the Knot Their Toy series where Mercy has returned only to be unsure of where her relationship with Dorian's pack will continue now that her agreement from the bet last term has ended. Wicked Girl is spicier than the first book in the series but still filled with angst and twists to keep my interest throughout the book. I think this is an enjoyable and quick paranormal romance read that I am giving a rating of 4 / 5 Stars.
If I could give this book more than five stars I would. On a very long TBR, Merlin will always jump to the top after reading this series. I only have a handful of series that I would reread, and this just made the list. Wonderfully wrapped up conclusion to this delicious duet. These books could have been longer, she could have done more and I would have still read them, but she went out on a high note. I do hope for a novella or an epilogue that lets us peek at the HEA way down the road but I LOVED this book! The character development, relationship development, the spice, the drama, it was all so beautifully balanced!
I was completely sucked into this world, with the second book I took my time because I wasn’t ready to be finished with this duet, I wanted to savour it.
The spice burns even hotter in this one, which after that first Kitty moment, I didn’t think was possible. Then there’s also the the sweetness, you get a taste of it at the end of the first book, but this time around expect your heart to puddle 💦😍
AJ was a new author to me and honestly, I’m not a big fan of PNR, but I have been trying to branch out into different sub-genres more and this was a great duet! I’m so glad I took the chance. I will be checking out the rest of her books for sure!
Wicked Girl is book two is the Knot Their Toy Duet and the epic conclusion that I’ve been waiting for! After book one ended the way it did, I have been hanging out for this book. Mercy returns to school. She’s unsure where things stand or what will happen with Dorian’s pack now that her agreement to the bet has now ended. They are basically treating her like part of the pack without her realising it anyway.
In this book, you can see her connecting with more members of the pack, not just Dorian like she was in the first book. In this book, she starts to get closer to August and Foster. There’s not as much violence and there’s no murder in this part of the story, which has somewhat calmed down.. a LITTLE BIT. There is still this need to seek revenge and there are still people out to destroy the pack and Mercy becomes collateral damage in the process.
The heat in this book was on another level. I was not expecting this much heat. I thought book one was steamy… The heat, the link, the connection between them all is pure, it’s intense and it’s heavy and raw. Loved it!
So the ending of book 1 was bad because there was going to be a book 2. But this is not a good book.
So this subpar book is dumb - all last book 1 she was referencing Ohio as being where she’s from and now in book 2 she’s saying she’s from Chicago The author told us these two characters had sex in book 1 and now in book 2 they’re saying they never went that far - don’t even get me started on how in this omegaverse - you can take suppressants that allow you to still go about your life while you have an active heat.
The bad roommate was wholly unnecessary and the ending was bad
The saving grace was that I did like these characters even though there were no redeeming qualities of the bullying pack she wanted to join and then in this book she was bullied by another alpha for no good reason.
There were a lot of additions through this book that were just unnecessary and honestly it’s a shame.
we got more into their relationship in this book and i love their dynamics! foster is soo funny since the first book. august bby always the chillest one. and dorian is sooooooooo sooo hot hihi. mercy was a great character and love that she doesnt take sht from anybody. but that ending scene when she does that salute and walk back makes me remember the ginny & georgia salute meme 😫 like what was that???
but the plot was weak in this. what is going on with petra? and the amelia revenge plot was boringggg :/ but i love elaine, she’s so sweet. and i also like the friendship between mercy, cecily and eden. would like to know more about dorian and cecily friendship tbh. and why do i kinda want to see cecily with dorian 🤭🤭??? 😭😭 its just cecily is too charming.
my second series from aj merlin and i might read more! one thing i noticed tho from this series and the pretty obsession series is that the first book is always good and then it goes downhill from that. its like merlin doesnt know what she’s going to do 😭 but imma still read other books from her.
This definitely gave us a better look at Mercy and her development which I found enjoyable. But I feel like we didn’t get a deeper look into the pack and really give the guys some depth. The bonds felt kind of superficial even though I’m an absolute sucker for when the mmc’s notice everything about their girl. That majorly kept me interested and giddy. ugh it’s so attractive
But I do really dislike when authors have some sort of mental disorder aspect and don’t really give it the page time it deserves. Mercy clearly has quite a bit of deep rooted trauma and it felt like it was glossed over. It truly adds to the story and characters when authors take the time to flesh that plot point/trait out.
No surprise, bc it’s AJ, but I really liked it. I enjoyed the guys trying to convince Mercy (silly girl) that they were for real. Her feeling special for like the first time ever… More roommate drama 🤣 while building friendships outside of the pack. And again, Mercy shows her true skill as a fixer. She let the boys do their macho bs… and then just got shit done. 🤣 I loved seeing the pack bonds grow and new sides of the guys come out as they could be themselves. Dorian = 🔥and caring Foster = entertaining/irritating August = a little aloof but still sweet and sexy AF!
Just awesome… the only problem is that I want more of Mercy, August, Dorian, and Foster!!! #TeamBonusContentInOmnibus
In the first book, Vile Boys, Mercy draws unwanted attention from a pack you didn't want to be on the wrong side of. It made you cringe knowing what was going to happen. By the end of the story, they are no longer really punishing her.
When Mercy returns to school in this story, she isn't sure what will happen with them after the break. They are more than willing to pick up where they left off with her, with the exception of the bullying. They are treating her as if she is part of the pack without her realizing it. The first story focused more on Dorian and Mercy since he is the leader of their pack and the one she angered the most. In this story, August and Foster get more time with Mercy. This one doesn't have murder, but it has a revenge-seeking alpha out to destroy the pack and Mercy is just collateral damage if she can be used to hurt them.
The spiciness of the story is pretty high. You hate to see these characters go however this is supposed to be a duet. Maybe we will get lucky and see them again.
This duet was a solid read and pretty fun too. We’ve got a some bullying in book one and lots of drama throughout.
I knocked off a star mainly because this didn’t actually read as an omegaverse at all. But if you go into it as a contemporary why choose- it’s still very enjoyable!
