Chick considered himself to be an Independent Baptist and follower of the King James Only movement.
His comics can be considered to be controversial because they accuse Muslims, Catholics, Freemasons and other non-protestant religions of murder and diverse conspiracies.
Chick also ran his own publishing company named after himself.
A very interesting interpretation of Catholicism. The problem I have with these tracts is the absolute inflexibility of the author; as if there is only 'his' way to salvation. At the same time any other path to salvation is really a path to damnation. I will sum it up this way: I believe God will hear the cry of a child before a prayer from the most devout religious leader - just my humble opinion.
Does this count as a book? Well it has an ISBN number so I guess it does. This isn't new ground for Jack Chick, but then again most of his tracts aren't. They all have the same basic structure, someone is confused about something, they learn that most people are going to burn in hell over what confuses them, and they realize that only by taking Jesus into their life will they not go to hell. This particular tract deals with the Catholic Church, something that Chick has attacked on many occasions before, but that's ok.
This is a new tract, that has only come out this year, which is exciting because it means he is still working on churning these things out. This one showed a certain amount of growth, he didn't once refer to the Catholic Church as the Whore of Babylon, which is interesting because normally him and his ilk can't restrain from using that phrase. There is also a nice sinister looking drawing of the new Pope, which I think might be a highlight of Chick's drawing oeuvre.
The tract, like all of the others, also comes with a nice handy last page that allows you to check the box yes or no if you want to be saved by Jesus, that's what I love most of all about Chick (after his almost insane devotion to churning these things out, and the blatant offensiveness of some of his work), it's the ease of saving your soul in Chick's belief system. It's so American, so easy, so convenient, dare say it's so lazy that one could save themselves during a commercial break of American Idol, and once you do it you are all ok, you're in. None of the good works, maybe you want to share the joy of Christ with others in an annoying fashion, and hide little comic books in public places for people to find, but you don't have to be a good person, you can be a fucking serial killer and you're in (see the Chick tract about the killer who goes to heaven while the 'good' people who haven't become born again burn for all eternity). This is fast food religion with the fervor and sublimated hate that can make the basis for any good mass movement. Yay America, Yay God, Yay JC, and Yay for Jack Chick!!!
