"I come from a long line of idiots."

Those were the last words his father uttered before dying, and from what he knew of his family tree and the unfortunate end that came to so many of his ancestors, Del Honeycutt couldn't disagree. What he didn't know was that his family held dark secrets—secrets that were about to come crashing down upon him.

A seemingly innocent date gone tragically wrong plunges Del into a web of murder, lies, greed, and a hidden fortune dating back to a crime committed 85 years earlier by his great-grandfather.

Accompanied by Sabrina, the sister of Del's brutally murdered date, a violent journey of discovery and fear begins. Pursued by vicious killers intent on eliminating anyone with knowledge of the 85-year-old crime, their only hope of survival is to find the reasons behind the original crime and why, decades later, someone is still willing to kill to keep it hidden.

But Sabrina is concealing a monstrous lie of her own. Is she who she says she is?

This was a really fun book. The characters were interesting. The leading man was kind of an Everyman trapped in a boring life and seeming to not be able to get himself out of it. And then he meets a woman on a dating app whom he doesn’t like and asks him probing questions about his family. And then we’re off on an adventure and solving a mystery. The story was well written. Even though you had regular people getting involved in solving this mystery and being chased by ‘bad guys’ it felt believable.

It took a while for the pace to pick up in this story, and my interest was slow to grow in the plot. Del is a pretty plain guy. He respects his mom, is employed, has stayed out of trouble all of his life. But once the plot starts throwing wrenches into his well-oiled life, the story really picked up for me. An odd blind date with Izzy Worth goes way too swiftly, leaving Del feeling no connection to the woman. However, after her murdered body is found, Del is pulled into a mystery that involves a successful mystery writer (Sabrina Spencer) and a painting.

The mystery tosses Del and Sabrina around the country and more. I got a little fatigued of all the intrigue and travel. It felt like the plot was trying to cram too much into one story. I did like that Sabrina could handle herself with her prison moves, but sometimes it felt like she was trying too hard to impress Del with her dark side. I wanted to love this character, but my feelings remained luke warm.

The romance element didn’t work for me. The story often refers to Sabrina as a girl and comments more than once on her child-like approach to love making. Perhaps that wasn’t a well-thought out phrase or perhaps Del likes being the teacher in the bedroom. Either way, I would have liked the ladies to be referred to as women and not as girls.

The mystery wraps up with all the big questions answered and our heroes doing the right thing. Several charming yet forgettable side characters are left happy and in awe of our heroes’ abilities. It was cute. 3.5/5 stars.

The Narration: Greg Hernandez had a good voice for Del. He was practical, straightforward, sometimes bewildered, sometimes awed. It matched Del’s personality in the story. However, Hernandez didn’t have a range of voices for the various characters. His female voices sometimes were non-existent and the rest of the time needed some femininity. Hernandez did try his had at some accents and they were OK. The pacing was good. The audio quality could use some polishing. 3.5/5 stars.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Greg Hernandez. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

A Mystery And Not a Thriller

I chose to read this book, because I enjoyed one of this author’s earlier books titled “Wisdom Springs.” After reading the stellar four and five reviews, I was very disappointed because I barely managed to make it through this book.
The protagonists never settled in my mind, almost as though the elements of their characters didn’t fit, and so much so as to be unrealistic. There is an understated but almost instalove between the characters, but without the warmth of a romance.
As I read on, the storyline morphed into a sendup worthy of an old-fashioned gangster movie. More, it took the MCs forever (70% mark) to figure out what the treasure was.

This was a pretty decent mystery story more about the past than the present. I found parts of it a tad unbelievable with everyone but the 2 main characters getting killed and they manage to escape every time. Likeable characters and a decent plot. More a mystery of a long lost hidden treasure. Action packed.

A fun read

There was just enough fact mixed with “exciting” fiction and illusion to but avoidance of descriptive gore to make this fun to read. Thanks!

HALL WAYS REVIEW: Audio book review. In ALL LIES, author Andrew Cunningham offers readers an intricate plot that wonderfully weaves together multiple characters across multiple timelines. There is plenty of action with twists and dangerous, often deadly turns as main characters Del and Sabrina dig deep to uncover long-buried truths -- and maybe find love in the process.

Readers who enjoy some historical basis and facts in their books will like how Cunningham sprinkles them into ALL LIES. (Be sure you listen/read the Author’s Note at the end -- so interesting.) You can’t go wrong with hidden treasure; however, I also enjoyed the bookish parts of the plot -- one of the main characters is a bestselling author, another important character has that years-old work-in-process, and there’s a discovery of a little-known book that holds important information. (Though it felt a little “info-dumpy” when parts of that book were read, word by word.) Those pieces added extra appeal to the story for this book nerd.

Readers must suspend their disbelief a bit, which is fine most of the time. But, I was bothered because one part of the hidden treasure is painfully obvious, yet our very educated MCs don’t figure it out until near the end. Though that was a hard pill to swallow, I forgave and forgot it as the story cranked up with a flurry of action and intensity in the final chapters. A well-placed and unexpected twist (or two!) enrich the story and provide a satisfying resolution. ALL LIES is thoroughly entertaining, and I have no hesitation in reading FATAL LIES, the next book in the series.

ABOUT THE NARRATION: ALL LIES opens with an ear-catching line and narrator Greg Hernandez pulls in the listener with his warm and mildly expressive voice. He is storytelling, and as new characters are introduced, he adjusts to create a different voice for each. Happily, his female characters sound different from the males (and each other) without sounding artificial or falsetto. I was okay listening at regular speed, but at some point, the narration shifts. The delivery remains even, but the narration sounds somewhat stilted and more like the book is being read instead of its story being told. The narration is especially awkward with sex and love scenes, but the text is somewhat awkward for those scenes, too. (I recall this same issue in Deadly Shore, the last book I listened to with this same author/narrator team.) Even with these issues, Hernandez’s delivery works because of his perfect enunciation and his marvelous voice.

Thank you to Audiobookworm Promotions and Mr. Hernandez for providing me an audio download in exchange for my honest opinion – the only kind I give. This full review and other special features on Hall Ways Blog.

"They make it look so easy in the movies."
A book which started off so well, with expectations of great characters caught up in a thrilling mystery but which was unable to sustain it's good beginnings.
With an opening line, "I come from a long line of idiots," it would be hard for a reader not to want to know more and the more, as it is quickly revealed, is intriguing. Del's professor father had recently died, murdered, to be more precise, by a furious husband not happy with dad's dalliance other his wife. And a grandfather had fallen out of a bomb bay in World War II. Plus, it soon becomes obvious that there is a hidden secret in the family history, one concerning hidden treasure about which Del had known nothing but that someone else obviously did, and wanted to know more Lots more.

So good start, quirky characters and a treasure hunt. But sadly, as the book progresses the story deteriorates. Despite the exchange of in depth background information, the characters of the main protagonist fail to develop, the sudden switching of opponents loyalties seems ridiculous and the fact that no one could work out what the most valuable part of the treasure sought until late in the book was, frankly, ridiculous given the education and knowledge of the main protagonists. The very first mention should have been enough to send excited quivers down their necks.

The most interesting aspect of the story, for this reader, is the inclusion of a best selling author, also the excruciatingly executed love interest, as well as a book written by another of the, now dead, protagonists Shovel idea (sorry).

Atherton following the text of the book, narrator Greg Hernandez starts well, his warm sounding voice reading clearly and with expression; though little in the way of individual character voicing, each was still easily differentiated. However, as the story progressed, his narration, too, became more plodding and this reader found the combination of lack of depth from both author and reader made concentration difficult.

So, overall, a great start and some excellent ideas but with a continuation which, though fast and furious, failed to convince. My thanks to the rights holder who, at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy of All Lies, via Audiobook Boom. There was much to enjoy but it could have been a lot better.

All Lies is very much a mystery with a sprinkling of history thrown in for an added bonus. Parts of the story have the feel of a cozy mystery, but that’s quickly remedied as the danger ramps up. I do love a bit of wit with my mystery, and Andrew Cunningham does that quite well. In fact, the opening line serves the dual purpose of being witty while also grabbing the listener’s attention. The story does require a bit of suspension of disbelief, but it is certainly a fun read from start to finish. There are parts that were a little bit predictable, but there are also some wonderful twists thrown in that kept me on my toes.
I really enjoyed the characters in this fast-paced tale. Love them or hate them, and we get some of both, they’re all interesting, and they add something to the story. I love that we don’t have much in the way of throw away characters in this one. Even the secondary characters have their own distinctive personalities, and they were all engaging and fun as they came in and out of the story.
I think this is my first listen with Greg Hernandez, and I did enjoy his storytelling. He kept the voices distinct, and there was a great continuity throughout. When Del spoke, I knew it was Del even before I was told, and it was the same for other major players in this wild ride. I did notice that the reading quality became a little stilted, particularly during romantic scenes. It felt a bit like the narrator was uncomfortable with those parts, like he was simply reading to get through those scenes rather than the storytelling I heard for the rest of the book, but other than that, Hernandez does a great job with bringing the characters to life.
To sum it up, All Lies is a fast paced, entertaining mystery, and if you like a bit of real-life history, Cunningham gives us some of that throughout the book too. The author’s note at the end goes into the specifics on that, and it certainly makes for an interesting element. The story is full of suspense, danger, secrets, and we even get a little romance thrown in for good measure.

ALL LIES is the first book in the Lies series. Though each mystery will stand on its own, the series is a continuing relationship between Sabrina and Del. I strongly recommend reading the series in the order of release.

This story spans three generations of “idiots,” thieves, and murderers. There is romance, suspense, treasure hunting, twists, and danger. This is the reason to occasionally put down the “bodice rippers” and read a little something different!

I absolutely adore that this is based in historical facts. The research must have been fun, extensive, and its own jigsaw puzzle. If you love the based-on-fact story, read/listen to the notes at the end; I found it fascinating!

Narration: Greg Hernandez’s narration style reminds me of the old film noire announcers. That’s very difficult to maintain for seven plus hours (and at times a bit on the boring side), but appropriate to the genre. If this isn’t his first book, I’d be incredibly surprised. He doesn’t have pause and emphasis of word choice mastered as yet. It was probably a cold read as well.

Note: While I received this book as a gifted audiobook copy via Audiobookworm Promotions Adopt-an-Audiobook, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

Enjoyable Mystery

I could relate to both Sabrina and Del’s characters and enjoyed seeing their relationship develop over the book from cautious allies to true partners, friends and lovers. The mystery was great with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and enough true life details of thefts, places to make it seem more real. I will likely continue with the series and this author.

A very enjoyable story with lots going on, so much so that the story held my interest from start to end.
Delmore (Del) Hunnicut is merely going through the motions when an online date changes his life. Not in the way you might imagine though. He didn't click with Izzy Worth and found her questions about his grandfather most puzzling, especially when he had no answers for her.
So, imagine his surprise when he is asked by police to prove his whereabouts when Izzy is found dead.
Nothing is the same after that, as he is shot at, robbed, threatened all within a few days.
Spurred on by his neighbours and mother, he gives up his boring job and takes times to explore the ideas churning in his mind since Izzy's questions. What did his grandfather have to do with what was happening to him now?
Cue the mystery author sister of Izzy (with her own troubled back story), an art heist from the 1930s, a treasure hunt and lots of interested parties eager to block him by any means necessary.

Great narration: Del's inner thoughts come through with the perfect amount of sarcasm, and there's no confusion as to who's speaking when it comes to dialogue ( even when the scenes include multiple characters).

Recommended to mystery fans who enjoy a tangled web of clues all held together by strong protagonists.

This hugely enjoyable adventure of discovery begins with the murder of Del Honeycutt’s date. Before he has time to catch his breath, he’s plunged into a race to discover ‘hidden treasure’ from a crime committed by his great grandfather 85 years ago. Only Del’s not the only one after the treasure. A vicious group of killers are taking no prisoners in the search for the only clue to the location of the loot – a painting, stolen many years before.

To complicate matters, Sabrina, turns up, wanting to find out who murdered her sister. Is she a grieving relative or is she also after the treasure?

From office worker to investigator in a couple of days, Del falls into an exciting adventure that takes him and Sabrina across America and into Brazil’s Amazonian rainforest to locate the treasure. Along the way, they learn more about each other and their respective pasts. As danger pushes them closer together, the inevitable romance is not far behind.

While it’s pure escapism, the characters are delightfully engaging. The pace never lets up and the twists and turns make for exciting reading. This is adventure in the style of ‘Romancing the Stone’, filled with humour, unlikely heroes and a gripping narrative that kept me turning the pages.

Fabulous entertainment.

You know you have to keep listening when the book starts with "I come from a long one of idiots".
It is a feel-good story where everything works out well in the end. It is about a mystery in Del Honeycutt's life that was created by his ancestors. He is joined by the famous mystery writer, Sabrina Spencer, in his quest to find the truth.

Their journey from Boston to Brazil is full of surprises and bullets with a dash of romance.

I think the characters and the plot are well written. The story is not convincing enough though. Things simply work out for the protagonist which is hard to believe. I think this is one those books you finish in a day, when you are not in the mood to think too much.

I am interested in reading the remaining books in the series as I want to see where Del's mysterious ancestors take him.

Narration: I loved Greg Hernandez' voice and his narration. He has a warm voice, he read very clearly and added appropriate expressions.

Do like a murder mystery that makes you feel you like you are in the 50's with thrills, fast cars, murders and beautiful ladies well you should get this series. The author does an awesome job in writing this type of books even though the timeline is in the present day.
Del a rather dull and plain old dude with a dull job and no love life to speak of is the main character. His father just died and then very strange hings start happening one murder after another all due to Dels father side of the family best described as ldiots and crooks. You get a run down of his father side that starts in1800 England onto America and to the present all crooks and was all murdered or died in the attempt of doing something very illegal.
As you start to listen you meet Sabrina a famous author with a very dark secret pass, her adopted sister who is the first to be murdered.
And finally Del get a life of running from shadows, a possible life with Sabrina if he lives.
So for a good ride and adventure you must read or listen to this series.

I received a complimentary electronic copy of this the first in the Lies series of novels, from TheFussyLibrarian, BookAdrennaline, and the author, Andrew Cummingham. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me. I have read All Lies of my own volition, and this review reflects my honest opinion of this work. I am pleased to recommend Andrew Cunningham to friends and family. He writes a tight tale with good people and exciting action that will keep you up nights. I thoroughly enjoyed Sabrina and Del, Mo and Seymour, and I'm excited about this series. Andrew Cunningham writes a fine mystery, basically unputdownable so be prepared to go without sleep for a day or two. The series is on Kindle Unlimited, so I will perhaps be sleepless for days. If you love an exciting mystery peopled with responsible, competent heroes and heroines, Cunningham is your go-to author, as well as mine.

"You come from a long line of idiots!" One of the best first lines I have ever read in a novel, and it just gets better from there.

Del Honeycutt inherits an 85-year-old mystery that flips his life on its head. The story weaves with a pace that keeps the reader hooked, layering factual elements into a richly fictional world. I loved the WW II bomber scenes.

Del, with an unexpected companion, delves into their shared legacy, uncovering a crime their great grandfathers committed, and hunting for the hidden proceeds. The engaging characters follow a narrative that doesn’t slow down, with twists to the end.

The plot grips from the get-go. The story deepens, escalating towards an unforeseen conclusion that makes this a 'must-read.'

Cunningham crafts more than just a mystery; it's a treasure hunt laced with humor and historical intrigue. The protagonist's dialogue is sharp, witty, and self-deprecating, striking a balance that avoids the trap of overdone humor. It’s a great blend of wit, action, and puzzle-solving that elevates the novel to a standout stature.

I usually stay away from series books, but the ratings for this one were high so I figured I’d take a chance. The story of Del and Sabrina looking for some paintings and some Faberge eggs were interesting enough, but the highlight was finding out the much of the story happens in Fairfield, Iowa. That where my dad grew up! The author talked about Fairfield stuff that I was familiar with: they had the first public library west of the Mississippi (I’ve been there), the town square was an old-fashioned square (it is), they have a Pizza Hut (I’ve been there) and the old Parsons College was turned into the Maharishi University (called Guru-U by my Uncle Bob). There were a lot of characters in this book which was confusing at times. Every now and then a name would be thrown in and I had no idea who they were talking about. Foley? Flynn? I do like the author’s writing style and will be looking for the next book.

Del Honeycutt leads a boring life stuck in a boring job he really doesn't like and resorting to online dating websites to find a woman. His most recent date, all 45 minutes of it, was puzzling. It got even stranger when the woman was found dead the next morning. Then his recently deceased father's house was broken into and he finds evidence of a mystery in the family's past. Sabrina, sister of the murdered woman, approaches Del to help her find out why her sister was killed and how it is connected to his family's mystery. From there the book takes off to travels back and forth with people following them and trying to kill them. The characters in this book were well developed. I really liked them. The mystery was intriguing and twisty. The author's sense of humor added to the book. The narrator did a good job at bringing Del to life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and immediately listened to book 2 in the series. I have discovered a great new author.

Interesting Book

The overall book is good and keeps you entertained with interesting plot lines. It does goes off on a few tangents and keeps adding new players and background to the story so its a while before you have the full picture of who fits in where.

Whilst it is all pulled together in the end, I think more could have been done with regard to the fallout from Sabrina's past being made public and it would have been nice to have a bit more detail regarding the art Museum reactions etc.

My main issue is that it didn't quite ring true that after everything they had been trough that they would hand everything over to Emil to resolve. They barely know him and yet they happily hand over complete control over the final outcome to him. perhaps a few less unnecessary characters that crop up and seem to add very little, if anything to the story i.e. some of the squatters at Fordlanders.

Overall a good read with an interesting plot line.

I honestly liked this, I was not sure going in that I would, but the plot was all it said it would be, and much more, so much is going on in the story and the ending is quite good.

I think each chapter has something to offer readers and its worth a first and second read. All the main characters are interesting and each piece of the story from the history to the relationships and secrets brings something to the story, little if anything takes away from it. I did get the audio version and find that the narration was one of the better ones I have heard from the site, the female voices were somewhat limited but most he made work for him and overall the action was well done and I love how he made the story come alive.

I got a free copy of this book in return for my honest review.

I liked this book for the most part. The story line (although all over the place, and over the top) was engaging and kept my interest. I found the main characters to be likeable and rather endearing. Not a 5-star book or anything like that, but a good solid few hours of unraveling a mystery. However, I thought the ending was contrived and weak.

I was intrigued by the first line of this novel...Delwood is looking for love. He has an ordinary job, and took care of his mother when she was in ill health. Now he wants to find someone and goes at it by on-line dating. Izzy shows up and this date is going much like the rest, only next day, the police are at his door. Izzy has been murdered and guess who was the last person to see her?

Now Del meets Izzy’s step sister, Sabrina. Now his life is going to change in an instant. She arrives to tell him why Izzy actually wanted to meet him and now his life and Sabrina's are in a race to find out the 85 year old crime that connects both of their families.

This was really a fun, easy and great mystery. I can't read more about these two and their adventures!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I really liked the characters - the hapless Del Honeycutt, who passed ten years of his life in a boring, dead end job until his father's last words sent him into the attic to search for clues, and the beautiful, popular mystery writer, plus a cast of villains - all chasing a mystery that started in 1933 with their grand - or great grandfathers, a band of petty criminals. There were so many twists in this story, one set of gangsters after another, that the truth, when Sabrina and Del finally found it, wasn't they expected. I loved the character of Sabrina in particular - a strong woman bourne out of some terrible experiences. I didn't realise this was the first in a long series, but I definitely would like to read more of this author's works

Old crimes cast long shadows, as Del learns the hard way. When his date Izzy ends up murdered, Del is forced to recall the grandfather he never met, and try to make the connection. With Izzy's sister Sabrina, he tracks down the clues on the trail of his grandfather's art heist, of which, he comes to realize, his own father was aware. The trail, over 80 years old, is obscured by time but reaches into the present day. Many twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat till the end. The ride is smooth but surprising as the denouement is resolved.

I received a free review copy of this audiobook and truly enjoyed it. Both writing and narration are excellent and highly recommended.

This was a very fun book to read!

If you have a day or two with nothing pressing to do, pick this story up. Del is a doofus, but thoroughly believable and smart. You really want to root for him. Sabrina I was not quite sure about. She SEEMED to be true enough, but all through the book, I had my doubts. The secondary characters were also fun, believable. I always appreciate when the author takes the time for the readers to get to know who they'll be dealing with.
Overall? This isn't Crime and Punishment, in a literary sense. There IS a mystery, some espionage, a touch of romance, and some welcome humor.

This was a story about a failed first date, ended up with a killing of Del’s date. Why did this happen? Well it seems like his date was following him and his families history. That unexpectedly, lend the help of Sabrina, her sister, who teams up with Del to solve this mystery. This includes some historical events that are true to this day, including the Brooklyn Museum Heist and some stolen Faberge eggs as well. The writing of the story would think it would be a bit quick and not enough detail. The positives was the chemistry between Del and Sabrina and that made the story more enjoyable than it was.

Much Better Than I Expected

This book is one of the books Kindle Unlimited offers and I discovered bit through BookBub. I was expecting a mildly entertaining book about family secrets but ended up with an action/adventure tale with bullets, kicks, travel, and treasure. There's also abrupt life changes and romance. It's a good book. The one part I wish the author had addressed with more sensitivity is the conversations about rape. He didn't seek and moan, good, but he ended up making seem slightly worse than getting mugged, which it isn't, its much worse. Other than that I really enjoyed the story.

Well, that was a surprise, what a charming, quaint story. A mysterious treasure hunt with a whodunnit thrown in for good measure. Decades-old family mystery comes to light with an online date, throwing our main character into a world of intrigue and possibilities that he never expected.

A fun easy read that is packed with interesting characters and good old-fashioned mystery. The tempo of the story is steady and flows well throughout the book. Some thrills and spills interspace throughout as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and will actively seek out other books by this author. Overall a worthwhile read.

LOVED THIS BOOK!

This book was so good. It never got boring., and never got redundant, every page was filled with lots of interesting things plenty of danger and excitement and just two people who were in love with each other and they were good for each other and we’re going to make a happy life together. Looking for the treasure was a lot of fun for them and finding it was even better because it helped out a lot of poor people and helped a lot of people to get their lives straightened out. I really enjoyed the book and I highly recommend anybody to read it a few bad words in there, but not enough to do that. Just a good book

Different storyline!

At the beginning of this book I wasn't if I would like it. But I did! The story is unlike anything I've ever read before, and I read a lot. It was very suspenseful and exciting. It was a murder mystery and thriller. The characters were very well developed and believable, for the most part. The leading female character was a badass. The dialogue flowed smoothly. There were very few grammatical errors or misspelled words. I am moving on to book two and can't wait to see where it takes me.
