What a Tangled Web

Rate this book
Privileged and entitled, David Phillips, realised he had to mend his ways when he faced, not one, not two, but three, crossroad moments in his life. First, he suffered under the guilt of shouldering the blame for losing a crucial rugby game. Second he has to deal with the shame of a drunken episode with a woman who steals him blind during the night, and third, when he is confronted with the very real possibility of losing his place at Oxford university because of poor results.

Determined to reclaim himself and concentrate on his studies, David joins the SAS reserves. Initially treated with disdain by the hierarchy; he redeems himself by leading the team that rescues an SAS Sergeant - one of their own - from a group of terrorists.

With his appetite for risky enterprises whetted and possessing a unique ability to innovate solutions to difficult situations, David finds himself involved in a series of adventures, including a brief affair with the estranged wife of his commanding officer. He also leads a team of commandos to rescue a British ‘businessman’ from a group of Jihadis in Kenya.

Now married with two children, David finds himself at Webster’s, a large and successful financial advisory firm. He concocts a scheme to flush out the perpetrator of an attempt to steal highly confidential information. His subterfuge, in the guise of an apparently spontaneous office affair, has far-ranging implications that put his marriage, his career and even his life in jeopardy.

What a Tangled Web is an exciting contemporary adventure story dealing with a misguided sense of entitlement and the understanding of women’s need for recognition and fulfilment. Guy Hallowes, a farmer’s son, was born and raised in Kenya

Guy Hallowes has written a complex tale of adventure, set not only in the physically dangerous environment of African politics but also in the equally hazardous world of high finance in London where money is sovereign. The story centres around David Phillips, a young man from a privileged background. David is intelligent and a good athlete but in the opening sequences of the novel, he is on the verge of throwing away the many opportunities offered him. Determined to reclaim himself, David joins the SAS reserves and undertakes the arduous training schedule. He leads an SAS team that successfully rescues an SAS sergeant from terrorists in Kenya. Hallowes’ early life was spent in Kenya and his knowledge of the geography and geo-politics of that country stand him in good stead.
Back in London David begins his career in the world of high finance and quickly establishes himself in a financial advisory firm. He marries Melinda, who is probably smarter than he but plays second fiddle for much of the narrative – a recurring theme throughout the second half of the book. The novel is replete with betrayals, double crosses and romantic liaisons conducted in international settings, allowing the author to air his knowledge of foreign places.
If the intricacies of conducting financial deals and the legal and ethical ramifications of such procedures is described in almost forensic detail, character development, especially the women, is somewhat less satisfactory and occasionally couched in clichés.
Yet there is much to enjoy for readers who relish intrigue spiced with adventure – a tangled web indeed.
