Ashley James is a romance author who enjoys writing (and reading) LGBTQIA+ books. She is from Washington State—and no, not Seattle—and currently resides in South Carolina with her two kids and hairless kitties, Goose, Maverick, and Houston. Ashley is introverted and slightly (okay, majorly) awkward. She refuses to make this section sound like a tacky dating app profile, so she won't be telling you how much she enjoys music, how she thoroughly enjoys dancing and singing in her kitchen, despite not being able to carry a tune, and she won't be telling you about her love of toxic and broken fictional men.

MAKE ME PRETTY - Marie Ann
5 stars

This is set in high school and is an enemies-to-lovers story involving foster brothers. Paris caught Abel in a compromising situation awhile ago, which has sparked something for each of them. This has led to a definite push and pull going on between them since that moment.

He’s kept up this attitude for the better part of a week now. Acting obtuse and frustratingly indifferent. Like me touching him never fucking happened. When it clearly did.

Abel may appear to be the weaker one, but he is playing the game and pushing Peris' buttons the whole time.

Whenever we’re under the same roof, it’s like no one but me exists to him, and he lives for pushing my every button. I’m at my breaking point.

This one is very dark as they both have past trauma that they are dealing with and/or coming to terms with, which affects their interactions. Check the TWs if necessary.

I hate the way he makes me feel. Uncontrolled, off centered. Confused and fucking horny. I hate the way he looks. He’s wretchedly pretty.

The way this ended had me in a choke hold. I need so much more from Peris and Abel. There is so much more to unpack here.

The past affects us wholly—in more than one way. It’s the foundation of all we are. Influencing every moment, every decision, until we become the very product of our pain.

WREN - Ashley James

TROUBLE - Nyla K.

This story involves former best friends (Tate and Lance) from college who haven't seen each other in 16 years. Something happened back in the day that caused a major rift between them so when they happen to unexpectedly run into each other all these years later, it's a bit of a surprise.

This story was so good. I could feel the sexual chemistry coming off the page between these two. Lance's grand gesture toward the end was so cute and even a bit funny in execution.

I can’t wait to read more about Trouble and Sunshine!!! Don't forget the SPF.

Me and you… we’re so much more.

OFF SIDES - Andi Jaxon
4 stars

This is a college sports romance set in the Hidden Scars universe at Darby U. It involves a football team captain (Nick) and the captain of the hockey team (Joey).

This book starts off with a bang! Whew. Is it hot in here? (the answer is yes)

Joey is a bit inexperienced, but decides to go a gay club to see if he can find a hookup. He runs into Nick and they have some fun. After another chance encounter at the school gym, Nick suggests that they maybe hang out some more.

This stranger controls my mouth while I control his body, it’s a heady combination of control and submission that I’ve never experienced before. I didn’t expect this from him, but I like it.

They both live in the jock dorms at the college. Nick wants to help Joey explore his sexuality a bit to help figure out what he likes/doesn't like.

I’m also happy to explore...to find what you like.” He lifts an eyebrow and drags his eyes over me. “There’s not much I’m against, and if it gets you orgasms, I’ll call that a win.” “Why?” I stand a little straighter. “What do you get out of it?” “Orgasms.”

I loved the cameos from some of the hockey team guys and I enjoyed how Andi inserted this story into the timeline of what happened in Hidden Scars. I really hope these two get their own book!

Also, I'm pretty sure no one will ever look at a cinnamon roll the same way again.

BECOMING LIGHT - Riley Nash
4.5 stars

This is a beautiful story of acceptance between a grouchy AF best friend's dad and a younger man who has been transitioning. They initially meet several years earlier and have a touching moment.

His remarkable looks and his bright spirit combine into something so perfect that my subconscious keeps spewing out its most inappropriate feelings.

Present day, Kota's best friend Mallory was supposed to help take care of Kota after surgery, but is unexpectedly called away. She asks her dad (Jamie) to take care of Kota until she is back. Oh Jamie! He has no filter, which is often quite humorous, but he has also had a difficult time lately in his personal life. While Jamie took care of Kota, Kota was also there for Jamie in a way that no one else had really been.

I whine as his mouth teaches me new things with every passing second, guiding my tongue with the same quiet demand he uses to boss me around.

I had a huge smile on my face at the end of this. It was so hopeful. Kota was the perfect sunshine to Jamie's grumpy.

Separately, we’re unfinished, but together we can walk forward, whole and free and bathed in light.

DISCOVERY - Nicole Dykes

This story involves a virgin MC right out of high school. Mason's grandpa left him his cabin in the Ozarks when he passed away. So after graduation Mason and his BFF Sarah move from Kansas to get a fresh start after high school.

Mason meets Owen at his restaurant right when they arrive in town. They are both instantly attracted to one another, but Owen doesn't like to hook up with locals. However, after another chance encounter they decide to spend some time together.

I don’t remember the last time I had so many long conversations, ranging from deep subjects to talking about our favorite seasons and colors. Not one second has been boring with him. It’s exciting in a brand-new way I never saw coming.

The more time they spend together the more they like each other. Things progress from there. Since Mason is a virgin Owen is super sweet and patient with him.

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about whether I’d want to be a top or bottom. I just . . . how do you know?”

This was a really cute and sweet story. Exactly what you would expect from Nicole!

Owen makes me feel good. In every single way. He gives me the grace and time to figure things out, and he’s patient with me.

LOST IN HER - Harleigh Beck

AN UNEXPECTED BEGINNING - Cora Rose

I loved this story!! Here we have a boss (Dean) and employee (Avery) with an age gap and bi-awakening. Avery comes into work looking a bit worse for wear and Dean immediately takes notice and wants to know what's going on. He cares about Avery and his well being. Avery also has a bit of a crush on Dean, even though he's straight.

He smells like gasoline and fire and smoke. He’s a real meat and potatoes kind of guy. I want to slather him in A1 Sauce and lick every hard inch of him.

Avery got kicked out of his apartment so Dean insists he comes to stay with him. Avery likes to dress a bit feminine, but has been holding back for fear of people being jerks.

Accepting myself for who I am has been a bit of a journey, one that I’m still on.

Once Dean finds out that Avery likes to dress a certain way, he insists that Avery be himself at work and not pretend to be something he's not. Dean is so sweet and caring!!

“You wear whatever the fuck you want, Avery. If that’s skirts and high heels and lipstick, then so fucking be it. My customers can deal or they can fuck right off.”

I need more Dean and Avery immediately! Avery’s inner dialogue was amazing. He constantly had me laughing. I’m also very intrigued by the side characters and can't wait for Ben's book.

ALL WE ARE - Jessie Walker

I loved the bits with Will and Way. That first scene up in the attic was HOT.

“All that matters is that you’re you”—my lip curves up—“and you’re mine, and that is fucking worthy of a place in this community.”

It was so nice to see Way start to feel more comfortable with his sexuality in this.

“I might not know who or what I am,” he says steadily, carefully, not taking his fervent gaze off mine, “but my boyfriend is gay.”

LOST & FOUND - T. Ashleigh

Owen had a chance encounter in college with a roommate that he can't forget about.

Years later, Owen feels sexually unfulfilled and wonders if it's because he likes men. Lance is Owen's assistant and after seeing something he wasn't meant to, Owen asks Lance if they could hook up. Things progress from there.

It’s been just over a week and we aren’t able to keep our hands off each other. In the office, in the bathroom, at his apartment, before work, after work, during work… It’s like we’re desperate and needy all the time.

These two cannot get enough of one another and I love them together. I also really liked how possessive Owen was of Lance.

This is everything. Everything I never knew I wanted. I’ve been so lost, trying to figure out who I was. Then Lance came in and showed me that I was never really lost. He helped me find who I was and I’m so thankful for that.

BI THE WAY - Isabel Lucero

Victoria and Aiden are friends-with-benefits in college and are looking for a third for a threesome. Aiden assumes it will be another girl because he is not into men. So he's a bit surprised when Vic has Oliver come over for that threesome. Aiden is a bit thrown off his game, but starts to wonder if maybe it wasn't as bad as he thought it would have been.

“Let me taste,” he says in a husky tone. I pull away, looking at him with a furrowed brow. He grabs a hold of my wrist and pulls my fingers from her body before taking them in his mouth.

After running into each other again, Aiden thinks he may be into Oliver. So they start hooking up. Oliver was so sweet and supportive of Aiden throughout this process and I loved his dirty talk.

“Be honest with me.” I meet his gaze and I’m overcome with attraction and desire. I’m beyond interested in what it would be like to be with him. I’m tired of fighting it. “I’m attracted to you,” I admit. “I’m curious, nervous, and afraid.

THE LOVE TRIANGLE EXPEDITION - Hayden Hall
4 stars

Elliot, Damien and Tanner met in college and decide to all meet up to go camping. Elliot has always had feelings for his friends, but never voiced them because he likes them both equally and doesn't think he'd be happy with just dating one. So none of them have ever gone there.

Torn apart between two boys I loved in equal measures. Incapable of reaching out for either one. Reluctant to have only one.

Let's just say that after some beers and skinny dipping, there is an extremely steamy scene by a fire pit.

*** I received an ARC of this anthology from the authors and this is my honest opinion. ***

♥︎ BECOMING LIGHT by Riley Nash - 5.0 stars

⇢ trans representation and a beautiful, heartwarming love story.

Wow. For a short story this was AMAZING!!! —carefully drawn and fleshed out characters and a deeply emotional written story. Other authors might have only managed to scrap at the surface of a story like this, because the depth of it lies not only in Kota’s journey but in Jamie’s too. Riley even manages to picture two sides of each of the main characters.

Kota: before, when he was afraid of telling anyone and now, in transition after his top surgery.

Jamie: before, when he was put together and well organized and now, grieving his best friend’s death and letting himself go.

When they first met, to the outside world Kota is still Dakota, drowning in fear, depression and too large hoodies. He has to stay with his college roomie at her dad’s house for the night. In the middle of that night, soaked from the rain, he breaks down and Jamie is the first person to hear how he really feels inside. That he’s a man, not a girl.

“I have a question, but people often tell me my questions are rude.” […]
“Can you tell me your name?”
“Um…” […] “Kota. My name’s Kota.”
“Thank you. It’s nice to meet you, Kota.“

Four years later Jamie has to jump in taking care of Kota after his surgery because his daughter needed to leave because of an emergency. His house is a mess, he is a mess and Jamie’s hiding in the dark.

“What’s your favorite memory of him?”
“I don’t revisit memories. They’re painful.”
“Believe me, I know. But that’s where Brendan lives now, and if you don’t go back and visit him sometimes you might lose the way.“

They’re both so wonderful in saying the exact right thing at the moment the other is pulled under by painful thoughts —see quotes. ♡

Over the span of just a few days in close proximity they start falling in love and find light in each other; unconditionally accepting of one another.

Ofc I would've loved to read this as a full-length novel because Jamie and Kota deserve all the words for their story to be told but this, as it was, was still so beautiful and an absolutely worthy entry for an anthology called the same.

Trouble by Nyla K. is the reunion between college roommates who shared a heated encounter and haven't spoken for fifteen years. Trouble highlights their unexpected and spontaneous reunion that is full of heated moments and undeniable chemistry. I loved getting insight into Lance and Tate's dynamic and history. They clearly have strong feelings towards one another and unfortunately were separated due to confusion and shock. I am very interested in seeing their story play out and enjoyed getting their story. It absolutely leaves me wanting more from these two.

Off Sides by Andi Jaxon is set in the Hidden Scars universe featuring Nick and Joey sharing an anonymous hookup and the shock of both realizing they are both athletes at the same university. This leads to many forbidden angst-filled moments between the two where their sizzling chemistry is front and center. I loved getting to see these two slowly unravel their feelings for one another. I would love to see their story fully and I enjoyed getting this brief insight into their complicated relationship.

Discovery by Nicole Dykes is a short and sweet small-town slight age/gap romance between Mason and Owen. Mason recently moves after graduation into the cabin he inherited from his grandfather, where he meets Owen, who owns a local restaurant. They start getting to know one another and their friendship quickly grows into something more. Overall this is another fantastic sweet romance from this author, who excels at this type of story.

An Unexpected Beginning by Cora Rose is the unexpected romance between Avery and Dean. Avery finds himself homeless without anyone to turn to, while Dean notices his employee is in trouble, he quickly offers his help. After having Avery stay at his apartment Dean is quickly taken aback by the sudden realization of his attraction to Avery, while Avery is nervous about whether or not his crush will be welcomed or not. Together they are a great pair who have a strong friendship that is rooted in care, protection, and kindness for one another. Cannot wait for the full-length version of this story, it was so good.

Make Me Pretty by Marie Ann focuses on the unsettling relationship between foster brothers Abel and Peris. These two characters are extremely damaged and haunted by past traumas, making their connection extremely volatile and intimate. I loved how unpredictable this story was. Peris and Abel play a twisted game of who can push the other further and I could never tell who was winning. I loved seeing their festering dynamic change and morph into something completely different. Their story is far from over and I cannot wait to read the rest.

I will update with mini reviews as I read each short story.

Becoming Light by Riley Nash - 5/5

Becoming Light was a tender and emotional story of finding acceptance, support and love. We have Kota, who has felt trapped in their body. He knows he is a trans man but is so scared of what may happen if they were to come out. One night while staying at their best friend's father's home. He meets Jaime, who actually hears them, and despite the fears they carry, thanks to their support, they get the courage to be their authentic self.

Four years later, when Kota is recovering from his top surgery, they meet once again. Feelings bloom between them, and Jaime also finds comfort and solace in Kota. He has also been suffering and dealing with grief.

Riley Nash always manages to write deeply emotional stories, and this novella was no different. I would love to see their full story one day.

Off Sides by Andi Jaxon 5/5

It's no secret that I love Andi Jaxon's stories, so of course, I enjoyed Off Sides as well.

Nick, the captain of the Darby U football team, is out one night looking for a hook-up at a club, not just anyone but another jock who will submit to him. In walks Joey, who ticks off all the boxes his looking for. There's an instant connection between the two, and they soon learn they both attend the same university. Joey is on the hockey team but not out yet. I loved how Nick was so understanding and caring of Joey. Joey has issues regarding sex, being outed and is very submissive; Nick, however, reassures him that they can have FWB and give him a safe space to explore. Their connection and attraction start to run deep, and they soon have an exclusive relationship.

Seeing the boys from Hidden Scars and getting a peak into the MCs of Blurred Lines was exciting. This story takes place during Hidden Scars.

Overall I enjoyed it. It was sweet, steamy and all things I enjoy. I can't wait for what is to come next.

** will update my review after each story read **

Discovery by Nicole Dykes: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- small town
- age gap (27/19)
- virgin mc
- first time

After moving away from his small town directly after high school to the cabin his grandfather left him, Mason and his best friend Sarah finally get to openly be themselves. It's there that Mason meets Owen, owner of a local BBQ joint, and the chemistry between the two of them is instantaneous!

Owen and Mason are adorable! Their instant connection turns into a sweet friendship that quickly turns into more, and I loved every minute of their story!

Off Sides by Andi Jackson: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- one night stand
- college athletes

Nick & Joey meet at a local gay bar and have a hot one night stand not expecting to see one another again, but end up running into each other on campus the next day. Turns out Nick is a football player at Darby U, and Joey, the captain of the school's hockey team. Joey does his best to fight the pull he feels towards Nick, but these two are inevitable.

I thought it was so sweet how patient and understanding Nick was with Joey, who is experimenting with his sexuality, and was content with reassuring him that whatever he likes/wants in and outside of the bedroom is totally fine whenever Joey needed it.

I thought these two were super cute, that their chemistry was off the charts, and the steamy moments between them were oh so good, but since this is a short story I felt like something was missing. Would absolutely love these two to have their own story!

An Unexpected Beginning by Cora Rose: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- boss/employee
- age gap (22/40ish)
- bi awakening

After finding himself kicked out his apartment by his homophobic roomies, Avery does his best to keep it secret from his boss Dean, and fails miserably. Now he finds himself living in the spare bedroom of the man he's been drooling over for months, and the attraction Avery feels for him isn't just one sided.

"He's a real meat and potatoes kind of guy. I want to slather in A1 Sauce and lick every hard inch of him."

Honestly, Avery has the best inner monologue (which is what I love most about Cora's characters), and his character is hilarious and feisty, but also so vulnerable and sweet. I really loved Dean's protectiveness and acceptance of Avery, and really hope that their will be more of their story!

Make Me Pretty by Marie Annno rating

i was trying to be hopeful going into this because when i read the trigger warnings, i had a strong feeling i wasn't going to like this because i don't normally read these type of tropes. so this is why i'm not giving it a rating as i personally feel it's unfair for me to when i don't necessarily like the tropes. however, i will talk about how much i thought peris was a total asshole. he very unlikeable in every way, he treated abel like absolute crap, calling him ugly and runt constantly and he genuinely thinks abel is only good for taking 🍆 and nothing else... etc..(but abel likes it so? idk). how peris treated abel honestly made me sad, and i was grimacing at every thought he had and everything that peris said aloud. i personally didn't vibe with this, but it can definitely be good for those who don't mind these themes.

tw/cws: self harm, non con/dub con, physical/emotional abuse, child abuse, manipulation, mental health struggles, homophobia, rape, heavy on humiliation and degradation, feminization, rough sex, abuse/violence between the two main characters.

this also has a cliffhanger ending for those who want to know going in, and by the author's note, it seems more is coming for peris/abel.

what was this....? the beginning felt ridiculous and kinda weird. nick was so cringey. the dirty talk was cringey. this was all sex and i honestly couldn't care for it because i didn't like the characters, writing, or story.

We still have hurdles to face, but I know one thing—he’s mine now, and I’m his, no matter what that means. Separately, we’re unfinished, but together we can walk forward, whole and free and bathed in light.

definitely by far my favorite in this anthology (i've only read, all we are, off sides, and make me pretty so far). despite this being so short, each character had so much depth. i adored the romance and both the main characters. overall a very heart warming story and i'd definitely read more of this couple if Riley ever expanded this into a full length novel. the ending put the biggest smile on my face and i would definitely revisit this short story because it made me feel so hopeful and emotional. kota and jamie were everything ♡

what to expect:
✧ trans mc
✧ best friends dad
✧ grumpy/sunshine
✧ hurt/comfort
✧ some spice
no cliffhanger

All We Are by Jessie Walker3 stars

It should be a fucking crime how perfect he is. Perfect in this light. Perfect for me. So perfect, sometimes it doesn’t feel real. He doesn’t feel real. But he is. This is. And by some fucking miracle, he’s all mine.

it feels amazing to be back with will and way. it's been a very long, angsty, heartbreaking journey but to see how far they have come in this felt truly rewarding. way going to a pride parade and holding will's hand in public? i cried a little. i'm so proud of way, he has come so far. and this novella just further proves how will is still one of my ultimate book boyfriends. he is so understanding and patient with way. and just so supportive and loving. plus he is so so sexy.

i wish this novella would have been just will and way. jeremy's povs was pure torture (and not in the good way). we already know the vibes of what has gone down (some serious shit) between mason and jeremy, so what was in this just highlighted over the same shit and therefore, felt irrelevant and not necessary. it was constant skirting around what actually happened which was annoying and i hated how mason was treating jeremy. i'll admit i'm really scared for Every Breath After. jeremy has been pining after mason for years and mason knows that, but he is still trying to be in jeremy's life when jeremy needs space. the only thing i felt we got out of jeremy’s pov was that mason is selfish. i mean, it's hard to say because we don't now everything yet, but i can only go off of what we have so far. and well, i feel like it's going to take a miracle from JW to make it seem like jeremy's not a second choice to izzy. plus it's hard to root for a couple when JW keeps pushing EBA back again and again so she can write other books instead. jeremy and mason feel basically impossible to work as a couple now.

alicia's review of ‘All We Are’ sums up my thoughts perfectly.

it's recommended that you read Where There's a Will and If There's a Way before reading this, this is more so an extended epilogue. things are settled for will and way but this is left in a slight cliffhanger between jeremy and mason.

these stories have been at the most mid for me (besides becoming light by Riley Nash) so i've decided not to continue with this anthology anymore. maybe down the line i'll try to attempt to read the other stories but i'm not just feeling it.

In order of my most to least favourite:

__
Trouble by Nyla K - 5 stars

This is my second time reading from this author and she's two for two with hits. This short story had a really interesting and complex relationship. It's a second chance romance with a lot of angst and an ending that leaves you wanting more. More like needing more!

__
Becoming Light by Riley Nash - 5 Stars

Riley Nash somehow managed to pack so much emotion into such a short page count. Kota and Jamie's relationship was so sweet and caring, I'm so happy they have each other. And of course the steamy scenes were immaculate.

__
The Love Triangle Expedition by Hayden Hall - 4 Stars 🥵🥵

Speaking of steamy scenes, this short was off the charts!! These three friends-to-lovers' had amazing chemistry. But it wasn't just that, their friendship really shone through with both their playful banter and deep meaningful conversations.

__
An Unexpected Beginning by Cora Rose - 4 stars

Really enjoyed this one. I hope Avery and Dean get a full book, and I want Ben to get a book too! It's a romance between a seemingly straight garage owner and his employee. After his homophobic roommates leaves Avery's living situation up in the air, Dean insists he stay with him. Living and working together, the two can't ignore the sexual tension between them!

__
Lost & Found by T. Ashleigh - 3.5 Stars

This was office romance and bi awakening packed into one. It starts off in the past with Owen's first kiss with a guy and then fast forwards 6 years to the present, where he is finally letting himself explore that side of his attraction. When that attraction is to his assistant, it leads to some fun complications.

__
Discovery by Nicole Dykes - 3.5 Stars

After graduating high-school Mason and his best friend Sarah move to a cabin his grandfather left him, in the Ozarks. They're both queer and ready to shed their small town and live to the fullest. It's there that Mason meets restaurant owner Owen. But Owen doesn't hook up with locals, and that's what Mason is now. It's lucky for them there's more than just hooking up on the cards.

__
Wren by Ashley James - 3.5 stars

A violent situation with her abusive husband is the last straw for Nelly and she decides to finally leave him. Her best friend Wren is the only person she'd want to turn to. After drifting apart, these childhood friends fall right back together. This childhood friends-to-lovers was sweet and heartwarming

__
Bi The Way by Isabel Lucero - 3 Stars

Adrien and his hookup buddy Victoria have been on the lookout for a third to have a threesome with. When Vic finds someone, Adrien is excited as all hell. Except he's under the impression that it was with another girl, but then the final member turns up to the party and it turns out it's a dude. This set up was probably my main grip with this short. It felt icky how Victoria withheld info and tricked Adrien into the situation. While Adrien and Oliver were really cute together, and I loved the roommate aspect to their romance, I do wish they had first met in a better way.

__
Off Sides by Andi Jaxon - 3 stars

This was a pretty standard college romance. Joey and Nick are on different sport teams so they keep their hooking up on the down low.

__
Lost In Her by Harleigh Beck - 1 star

I'm baffled at how bad this was lol. This was a step-sisters romance except they have zero chemistry, and throw in a ridiculous kidnapping plotline that's basically glossed over after the next few pages. Oh and a random sex scene in a classroom, to make the other love interest jealous. Don't classroom doors have a big ass window in them? She was literally eating someone out during school hours... I have to laugh tbh

__
Make me Pretty by Marie Ann - 1 star

Unfortunately, a terrible start to this anthology. An absolute dud for me. I need to learn to dnf 😂

__
All We Are by Jessie Walker - DNF 0 stars

Didn't read this one as it's not a standalone and "certain things will probably make more sense if you read" 2 of this author's other books... which I have not read.

Maybe it's just me, but why tf is there a short story in an anthology, with a bunch of different authors, that has prerequisite reading. Make it make sense.

Super sizzling and hot read, but with lots of emotion and confused feelings thrown in!

I swear Riley can just see into the souls of broken men, this story is so beautiful, so emotional, I don’t have the words to explain how Riley makes you feel.

Jamie is just the perfect side of grumpy to Kotas sunshine and together, they light the way in what can seem a dark place.

Amazing story, I hope to hear about them both again soon but if not the story was perfect.

I loved the duel POV, I love this crazy found family and I’m SO ready for Jeremy and Mason, I know they are going to hurt as well but I need their story.

"This guy is either going to be the best or worst thing to ever happen to me."

Wow this short story was HOT!! This was fast and steamy and left me wanting so much more. This was Nick and Joey's story and was set in the Hidden Scars universe, meaning we got a wee Preston cameo (yay!). Nick is the football captain and Joey the hockey captain, both aren't looking for a relationship as their sports come first, but together their chemistry is too good to ignore! They were so sweet together, Nick embracing his dominant side and filthy mouth, all whilst caring deeply for Joey. I can't wait for more from this author and hopefully these two will get a full length story!

"He's mine now, and I'm his, no matter what that means. Separately, we're unfinished, but together we can walk forward, whole and free and bathed in light."

I think this has to be my favourite short story ever, it was so freaking perfect! I need more from Kota and Jamie (and Mallory), their story had me in pieces. Thrown together at the beginning due to issues at Kota and Mallory's dorm, and again four years later after Kota has top surgery, this was a beautiful story about grief and finding love and caring, and reading it felt like the warmest most comforting hug. It had a touch of delicious spice and was an all-round beautiful story and I cannot wait for more!

"Love just wants to exist. Love deserves to exist."

This was a great fast burn short story that is a complete standalone, although you do meet Owen in Tequila Kisses. Owen is Lance's boss but he can't stop thinking about him, all whilst questioning his sexuality since college. Lance on the other hand, has a crush on his hot boss, and when he learns Owen mightn't be as straight as he thought, well things get spicy! I absolutely loved this quick read, it didn't feel rushed in the slightest, and the chemistry between Lance and Owen was off the charts! Overall a wonderful addition to the anthology.

Worthy: A Pride Anthology is a 13 author anthology with each story touching on the common theme of LGBTQI+ acceptance. It's crammed full of lots of my favourite MM authors, though not all necessarily writing MM novellas this time. Novellas aren't really my "thing" but but damn, do I need to read all of these as complete books!

I have reviewed the ARCs I read in this anthology, starting with:

1. Off Sides by Andi Jaxon 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

"He’s so needy for me. What the hell kind of partners has he been with that couldn’t figure him out? Did they not care, or did he just not tell them what he needed?"

This spicy little read is Nick and Joey's story and is part of the Derby U universe. We first meet the boys briefly in Hidden Scars and I loved the link to that story. Here, Nick is the confident star soccer player and Joey is the Hockey captain, strong on the field but oh, so submissive in the bedroom. I loved how accepting Nick was of Joey's insecurities and their steamy times together were hot AF, as you would expect with an AJ read. You'll never look at a cinnamon roll in the same way again!

2. Lost and Found by T. Ashleigh 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Owen is my boss. My very straight boss. Two things that make him completely unavailable to me."

Who doesn't love an MM employee/boss dilemma, not to mention a hot bi-awakening and all the steamy first times?! This little gem is Lance and Owen's story and it's going to leave you wanting more!

3. Becoming Light by Riley Nash 4.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Separately, we’re unfinished, but together we can walk forward, whole and free and bathed in light."

This is so beautifully written; it's angsty, it's compassionate, it's sensitive, it's so full of grief in parts but yet it's also so uplifting and confirming too. Age gap, trans male MC and best friend's father, yes there are some smexy times but this novella is all about the journey to love.

I’m rating this at a 3 I guess. Once again most of these are going to become full-length novels. There are only a few I’m going to give a go.

1. Make Me Pretty - Marie Ann *no rating*
(this will be released as a full length novel)

2. Wren - Ashley James *no rating*
(this will be released as a full length novel)

3. Trouble - Nyla K. *no rating*
(this will be released as a full length novel)

4. Off Sides - Andi Jaxon *3.5/5 stars*

This was a fun, spicy little short story about two college jocks who find more than just hookup material in each other.

Joey is the captain of the hockey team and is sort of exploring his sexuality. He knows he is attracted to men but hasn’t found himself able to have a fully satisfying hookup (he has never been able to climax with another person). The fact that there is some mental health rep in regards to his sexuality: anxiety and the inability to get out of his own head sometimes affecting his ability to fully let go was really interesting.

Joey meets Nick and their chemistry is off the charts 🔥🔥 These two definitely have some kinks that the other one is able to fulfill (submissive big hockey player, baby talk, pastry play... 👀)

This was a great short story but I was left wanting a little bit more. There was a lot of sex and I wanted to see a bit more of their emotional connection developing. Also this ends on them agreeing to continue to see each other but keeping their relationship (and sexualities) secret.

I did enjoy the cameos of the boys from Hidden Scars - can’t wait for Paul and Brendan’s book 🙏

5. Becoming Light - Riley Nash *5/5 stars*

This was a beautiful, emotional story. Riley Nash always has really touching stories so I don’t know why this one felt so unexpected. It fully made me cry.

Our two main characters:

Kota - a young trans man who begins the story in an emotional upheaval prior to coming out. And later, in the main portion of the story, is living as his true self and has just undergone top surgery.

Jamie - Kota’s best friend’s dad. He is deeply grieving the death of his best friend, but has stepped up to take care of Kota after his surgery.

What I didn’t expect was the level of emotional turmoil that both men are going through. It was so sweet to see them comfort each other and validating each other throughout this story.

“What’s your favorite memory of him?”
“I don’t revisit memories. They’re painful.”
“Believe me, I know. But that’s where Brendan lives now, and if you don’t go back and visit him sometimes you might lose the way.“

The way I sobbed during that conversation 😭😭

Of course, these two men, who are finding their way through their transition and their grief, end up up forming a connection that neither can ignore.

“It’s hard but sweet, respectful but dirty, and I think he could make me come with nothing more than a kiss.”

This story was just so uplifting and comforting. I adored these characters and would love to see more Kota and Jamie 😍

6. Discovery - Nicole Dykes *3/5 stars*

This was really sweet! It’s a small town, age gap, insta-love romance between Owen (local restaurant owner) and Mason (newly moved to town high-school graduate).

I loved their first little “date” although they didn’t plan on it being one. These two were just really tender and understanding with one another.

I don’t have much to say about this - It was low angst and a cute story. I actually do wish it was a bit longer as it felt quite short to me. But it was a cute little story of two men finding each other and one man living his life the way he has always wanted to. ♥

7. Lost in Her - Harleigh Beck *no rating*
(I may come back to this one but skipped it for now)

8. An Unexpected Beginning - Cora Rose *no rating*
(this will be released as a full length novel)

9. All We Are - Jessie Walker *3/5 stars*

This is not by any means a standalone short story. You need to have read the previous books in Jessie’s Lost Boys series. Here we have the gang attending a Pride Parade all together.

I adored the first half of this. I love Will and Way so much. I will never say no to reading about them being happy and in love. And what they got up to in the attic?! 🥵🥵

The second half focused more on setting up the next couples in the series - Phoebe and Shawn, as well as Mason and Jeremy. I’m not going to lie - my heart hurt for Jeremy. I just want the very best for this sweet boy. And it was hard to get a little bit in his POV, while knowing we are nowhere near to reading their story and seeing this precious boy get his HEA. Mason… I don’t know what to fully say cause I know it’s complicated but I’m warily watching this boy 👀 He has some serious growth to do.

Lastly - can we all just take a second to admire how literally amazing Will is?! Serious boyfriend goals 😍 Like he’s not perfect but he is prettttty fucking close.

“All that matters is that you’re you and you’re mine, and that is worthy of a place in this community.”

10. Lost & Found - T. Ashleigh *no rating*
(I may come back to this one but skipped it for now)

11. Bi The Way - Isabel Lucero *no rating*
(l may come back to this one but skipped it for now)

12. The Love Triangle Expedition - Hayden Hall *no rating*
(l may come back to this one but skipped it for now)

3.5 Overall

I skipped the FF stories because they don't really interest me at all, same as MFM and MMF

Jessie Walker was by far the standout for me, I can't read Will and Way without my heart getting involved!

Make Me Pretty - Marie Ann (2)
I really don't like lengthy flashbacks that make up most of the story. It makes everything so stop-start that I just can't get into it. First book by this author and I don't think they're for me if this is their usual writing style.

Trouble - Nyla K (3)
Definitely intrigued to see where this one goes when the full length comes out. I'm hoping for a lot of angst!

Off Sides - Andi Jaxon (4)
I want more! I'm actually more interested in finding out what happens next with Nick and Joey than I was with Preston and Jeremy (Hidden Scars).

Becoming Light - Riley Nash
Skipped this one as it mentioned references to surgery, and I've come to realise I'm super squeamish. Weird because I'm fine with the unaliving gore, but as soon as a book has medical context I feel faint!

Discovery - Nicole Dykes (3.5)
This was cute but felt a bit rushed and too short? It's something that's been bugging me recently but I'm getting tired of declarations of love where the relationship happens off the page. For me, this story just had four or five occasions where they swim then have sex, then an undetermined amount of time has passed and bam, they're saying 'I love you'. I want to read the relationship not just sex!

An Unexpected Beginning - Cora Rose (4)
Really enjoyed this, and now I'm so ready for Ben's story with his biker daddies! Did not realise they work with his dad, or I totally missed that while I was laughing my way through Colin.

All We Are - Jessie Walker (5)
I love anything with Will and Way 🥰 I also cannot wait for Jeremy and Mason's story, guarantee it'll make me cry even more than this did.

Lost and Found - T. Ashleigh (3.5)
This was cute but just a bit too sweet for me! I prefer angst and a lot of emotions, or a lot of humour to sweetness. I actually preferred the start in the college period to the rest of the story and would have been more interested in seeing the struggle then instead of years later.

Bi The Way - Isabel Lucero (3)
I liked this but I agree with the author that I'd like to see more of them because this felt a bit rushed - mainly because there was so much MF/MFM before they get together. I'm not really a fan of the F part but if there was a longer story with Oliver and Aiden I'm sure I'd enjoy it.

The Love Triangle Expedition - Hayden Hall (3)
I liked the poly relationship but they only talked about wanting each other and nothing else. It was hard for me to care about the outcome when I didn't know anything about the characters. Also one of the characters names kept changing which really threw me!

BI THE WAY by Isabel Lucero

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️

This was a great short story about Aiden coming out as Bi when he meets the sexy Oliver having a threesome with his bff Victoria. Who by the way, didn’t tell Aiden the threesome was going to be with another guy.

When Oliver then also moves into Aiden’s house as a new roommate things start heating up between them.
Oliver happy to teach Aiden all about gay sex as they explore each other, confesses to having had an eye on Aiden even before they met and they quickly fall into a relationship 💕

I wanted more! I always love a good awakening/cheating book
The married pastor aka collage crush run-in during Pride with the man-whore Tate, who we know from Push as Ryans fling, leads to a glory hole and a chase for a taste of the past that is a delicious treat of what is to come of “Trouble and “Sunshine” 👏🏼

I was happy to revisit with Ben and Ryan, I love them together! And altho I didn’t care for Tate in Push, Nyla defiantly redeemed him in this short story where we get to meet Lance, the man that once ran from him.
Mild on the spice for a Nyla K story maybe, or maybe I’ve just become immune to her smutty words 😉 who knows but we all know that she will serve us up a spicy tale to come when we finally get their book. Loved it, I wanted more.... I’ll just be waiting over here... *taps foot* 🫶🏼

Becoming Light by Riley Nash

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️

This was a short little story about Dakota becoming Kota.. Kota and Mallory are bffs. Jamie is Mallory’s gay dad who takes a liking to Kota who’s struggling with identity. Years later they are forced together when Mallory needs to go out of town and leaves her dad in charge of Kota right after having top surgery.
It was heartwarming and sweet. And very interesting to get glimpse into a trans man’s head before surgery. I know nothing about the struggles of transgender people so for me this was something new and interesting.

*** I received ARC of this book ***

𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐌𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐲 𝐛𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐧.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Make Me Pretty is a story about Abel & Peris who became foster brothers recently but Abel has been trying to get under Peris's skin for a while now. Abel has all this rumour going around him & Peris has a secret which makes him disgust Abel even more. But even though Peris don't want anything to do with Abel, still he can't get over him. Their story just rips my heart out in just a few chapters.
This book contains degradation kink, toxic obsession, and the Enemies-to-Lovers trope & you should give it a read. This is a short novella & I am looking forward to reading their whole story.

𝐖𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐲 𝐀𝐬𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is the first FF book I have ever read & I liked it. Ashley is one of my favourite writers among many & I love how she has written this story so beautifully.
Wren & Nelly have been best friends since they were kids & Wren has been in love with Nelly for a long time but she has shoved those feelings away because Nelly is straight & going to get married to her husband & move across the country. A phone call from Nelly, makes Wren leave everything & go to her, she finds out Nelly has been abused by her husband.
This story is of two best friends on a road trip after the incident & Wren trying her best to get her unrequited feelings in control. But are the feelings unrequited ...or is it?
I am looking forward to reading the whole story of this book.

𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐍𝐲𝐥𝐚 𝐊.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book is a story about Tate & Lance, who were college friends but something happened and they grew apart, now sixteen years after they meet each other again at Pride Day. Tate is gay and doesn't do relationships while Lance is a straight pastor who is married. But this attraction they have was rooted sixteen years ago & still Lance is confused about his feelings. I liked how they met after 16 years & still have strong feelings for each other; their chemistry was off the roof. I am interested in how this story plays out for Tate & Lance, can't wait to read it.

𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐢 𝐉𝐚𝐱𝐨𝐧
⭐⭐⭐⭐

Offside is a story about Nick & Joey, they were side characters in Hidden Scars. Joey is the Hockey team captain & Nick is the football player; They have a one-night stand without knowing they would meet each other on campus. Joey is in a stage of exploring his sexuality, so he doesn't know what to think of his closeness with Nick but Nick is a sweetheart & always wants Joey to be satisfied by their sex rather than just using him to get himself off.
Joey & Nick were the best characters and I loved how Andi had written them; their sex scenes were the spiciest and Nick had a hell of a dirty mouth 👅  but also he made Joey feel safe and even their banter & cuddles scenes were amazing. We even get to meet Paul, Brendan & Preston in this; a little behind the scenes from hidden scars, it was good to meet them in Offside.
The book ends with a cliffhanger but I hope we get their book.

𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐛𝐲 𝐑𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐍𝐚𝐬𝐡.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I have read Riley Nash's books before & I love how he writes the emotions of the characters which makes your soul ache for the pain they're going through.
Becoming Light was one of the most beautiful stories so far in the Worthy Anthology. I loved Kota & Jamie. They were so effortlessly perfect & their chemistry was so amazing from the start. Kota is a Trans character & Jamie is the dad of his best friend. I liked how their interaction started & how supportive Jamie was of Kota's decision.
I looking forward to getting more of their story but if not I loved this story.

𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐛𝐲 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐃𝐲𝐤𝐞𝐬.
⭐⭐⭐⭐

I love Nicole Dykes writing because she always writes so comforting books & this novella was also the best she has written.
Discovery is a short novella in Worthy Anthology which depicts the characters, Mason & Owen. Mason recently graduated from high school, and he has plans to move into a cabin in Ozark which his grandfather left for him after he passed away. Owen is the owner of a restaurant in the town near the cabin.
Mason & Owen had an instant chemistry in this story. This story has an age gap, first time & cutest chemistry between the characters which I liked a lot. Nicole has written this novella so beautifully if you are looking for a cute & chill read this is the one.

𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐈𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐲 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐤.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is my first ever book by the author Harleigh Beck & it was a FF romance novella. I liked Melanie & Jessica, their characters were so beautifully written & I could relate to Jessica's character, having to impress everyone around her & trying to fit in with society's norms.
Melanie & Jessica are stepsisters. Melanie hates Jessica because she thinks because of her & her mom, Melanie's mom passed away. But one abduction attempt brings them closer to each other, they cross every line & hook up together. But they also decide to forget about it, but Jessica can't forget her feelings for Melanie & things about her sexuality.
I loved this couple so much, Jessica had such a dirty mouth & it was fascinating to see her confidence come back in the bedroom, also how bossy she got with Melanie. This was a short & beautiful novella written by the author.

𝐀𝐧 𝐔𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐚 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐞.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I love Cora Rose's Unexpected series, though we are waiting for Ben's story I loved we got his Dad's story. Dean(Ben's dad) is a garage owner where Avery works. Avery has liked Dean since the moment he started working for Dean but he has always shoved his feelings down. After an incident with Avery's roommate, he is left homeless & Dean offers him a room in his place. Staying with Dean makes Avery fantasize about him. I loved how accepting Dean was towards Avery's dressing choices. This story was written very well by Cora Rose. The story has an age gap, employer-employee romance, Feminine clothing style, and sexual awakening & the few chapters we got were so beautifully written by the author. I want them to have their book but till then you should check this story. Also excited about Ben's story.

𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐖𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐞𝐫.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I am in love with The Lost Boys, give me Way, Will, Mason & Jeremy's moments I will be happy forever. I liked this story very much, it shows the growth between Way & Will though it's very little, I am proud of my boys. I can't wait to learn more about Jeremy & Mason in Every Breath After. My heart hurts for Jeremy, for how his feelings for Mason are so much more but Mason is not giving him what he deserves. Though the POVs of Jeremy & Mason were so amazing & can't wait to see where their story is headed.

Lost and Found is a short story about a boss/employee romance. Owen who we met in Tequilla Kisses is confused about his sexuality and he is more confused because, after years of not finding interest in guys, he is now attracted to his assistant Lance. Owen asks for help from Lance to help with exploring his sexuality. But as they start having hookups they come to realise they can't keep their hands off each other and want more.
Lost and Found is a fast-burn, insta-love & low-angst romance and I loved how they got together and they find they're happily ever after. Owen & Lance were the cutest characters and I loved how beautifully T. Ashleigh wrote this story. If you liked the author's other books you might want to check out this story.

𝐁𝐢 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐲 𝐛𝐲 𝐈𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐚 𝐋𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐨.
⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was my first short story by the author Isabela Lucero & I liked her writing style. This story is about Aiden & Oliver, I liked how their story started though it was a typical plot, one you must have read before but the characters had their charms.
Aiden & Oliver met during a threesome, and though Aiden was pretty unsure about how to act around Oliver, he couldn't get the thoughts about him out of his head. I liked how Aiden was upfront with Oliver & how Oliver understood him & never pushed him. They were the cutest characters & I loved their chemistry so much.
Would like to read their full-length novel if it comes & would be checking out other books by the author.

I have loved a good polyamorous relationship romance & Hayden has written this story so well. I liked Tanner, Damien & Elliot's friendship. The banter between them was so pure, you could feel their connection. Though they were some misunderstandings at the start, I liked how the story picked up. The sex scenes 🥵🥵🥵🥵  & I liked how caring Tanner & Damien were towards Elliot. I have liked Hayden's writing in the previous books I have read & I was not disappointed by this story. It was a chill read with some steamy scenes, make sure to give it a read.

WORTHY is a super-duper amazing Pride charity anthology with 12 brand new Queer romance short stories by great authors! A total #MustRead. Some authors included are my fav ones while some are new-to-me.

I'm one of those lucky ones who got the early ARC, but as it's a big one, I'm reading it slowly & will update as I read!

(Read on June 1)

THE LOVE TRIANGLE EXPEDITION by Hayden Hall

A MMM friends-to-lovers story where truth of years of pinning come out in open on a camping trip, with a really sweet & steamy result 😉. I saw a 3some story & WANTED! So of course, read it 1st.

The story's in Elliot's POV who's been in love with his 2 friends Damien & Tanner since forever. The trip's fun with subtle flirting, banters, skinny dipping...& they all think the other 2 make a better couple.
Umm what? 😆 Dudes, I'm new, yet I can see y'all got that connection!

"Torn apart between two boys I loved in equal measures. Incapable of reaching out for either one. Reluctant to have only one."

The 3 are so cute & a bit oblivious 🥰. Their personalities differ but mesh well. & the climax?? Oh goodie, I loved that vulnerability, & the steammmm...OMFG, HOT!

The hint to HEA is lovely 😍. It's standalone but related to "Frat Brats of Santa Barbara". This was my 1st story by Hayden, but I knew 'em & have some of their books on tbr 😉😉.

OFF SIDES by Andi Jaxon

A steamy MM romance where 2 strangers: Hockey captain Nick & Football captain Joey meet in a gay bar, have sexy times...but then meet again as they're in same college! Can this lead to more?
Ooh Sports, yum! I've read Andi's books, like'em.

Neither are out to their teams. Nick's confident of his sexuality. Joey's coming in terms with it, having dick-deflating anxiety doesn't help. But maybe, Nick can! Be friends who fuck & cuddle 😉.

"You make me feel worthy."

It's kinky ("baby boy" & food play!) & spicy HOTTT 🔥. It's dual POVs & N+J's relationship is sweet when J stops running 😆. It had a HFN & felt like just the beginning. As their teammates' stories are coming too, I'm hoping we see more of them. Plus I do wanna see'em come out 🥺. GIVE ME MOREEEE!

BECOMING LIGHT by Riley Nash

An emotional forbidden MM trans romance with a 16yr age-gap, a young man discovering himself & a DILF he has a crush on! My 1st story by Riley Nash, I've got their books on tbr.
(TW: transphobic parents)

With dual POVs, we see a 19yr old Dakota meet Jamie (bestie's dad & an architect), truths & sweet acceptance. Years later, now as a trans man (& a teacher!) Kota meets Jamie again after top surgery. As Jamie helps Kota recover, feelings spark. But due to a recent loss, J's hurting too. Can they defy the odds & be together?

"He’s the first person to see the real Kota, the first one who makes me feel wanted and cared for as a man, not a sideshow."

Kota's shy, sweet & Jamie's awkward, blunt. I enjoyed their affection, stubborness, music, a pet cat, B-day fun, Guided tour 😉 & sexy times! I loved K's bestie, tho we don't see much of her (kinda wanted to see her reaction 😅). The hint to HEA is sweet 🥰.

(Read on June 4)

AN UNEXPECTED BEGINNING by Cora Rose

A horny MM romance with almost 20yr age gap, Avery falling for his hot boss, who has his own bi-awakening! My 1st by Cora rose, got her books on tbr 🙌.
(TW: Not-on-page Homophobia)

Avery is sassy, likes feminine things (heels, skirts, crop tops!) & so in for Dean, his older muscled, widowed & single dad, mechanic boss who's sadly straight. But when Avery becomes homeless, Dean takes him in. As they co-habitate, low-key flirt + massages, Avery is more himself. Dean find himself attracted to a man for the first time. Then... Things soon become heated 🔥🔥.

“You be you, Avery. Don’t let those fuckers tell you to change.”

This story was so fun, but omg it just ended like that!! Just like it's name. I need this as a complete story! Plus, hopefully Dean's son's story too.

This was such a steamy and emotional novella. I loved it so much that I would really like a full novel of Joey and Nick!! I feel like they have very interesting stories and want more of their relationship. This was actually super swoony!!

This is an anthology that definitely has something for everyone. It covers a lot of different tropes with by very talented authors.

I am not going to detail each story as there are a couple i didn’t read, as the tropes were not something I enjoy, no fault of the author, so i wont highlight them by separating the stories.

The stories i read in this i enjoyed and some of them were amazing previews to some full books that i cannot wait to read when released. Such a great selection that will really spoil the reader.

Off Sides - Andi Jaxon - 4 stars

Thank you to Andi Jaxon for providing an ARC of her story in this anthology in exchange for an honest review.

Nick and Joey were so cute together. I love how Nick was able to make Joey feel comfortable and loved and worthy of who he is and what he wants, especially in the bedroom. And the two of them together? Freaking F I R E. Andi always writes amazingly hot sex scenes and this short story was no different. I'll probably never look at a cinnamon roll the same way again but also... I'm craving a cinnamon roll. I also liked getting to see or hearing mentions of Jeremy, Preston, Paul and "Oiler". Hehehe. His last name always makes me laugh because I live in Edmonton and I always just think of the Oilers.

Bring on November! I can't wait for the next romance from Darby U!

*ARC received from author in exchange for my honest review. *

Nick and Joey's shattered the ceiling on typical jock stereotypes. Seeing a character like Joey who is terrified of what he wants not only in life but especially in the bedroom pulled at my heart in so many ways.

Andi said it best though...

"Your sexuality doesn't define you. You're still you, no matter what gets your dick hard."

And that is something we could all learn from. Don't yuck someone else's yum just because it doesn't appeal to you. Nick's patience with Joey from the very start was beautiful because he knew early on that Joey was going to change his life. He just didn't know in what way so he did whatever he could to help Joey enjoy their time together.

Full of the usual heat you know and love from Andi Jaxon comes a story in the incredible world of hockey she created with Hidden Scars.

Oh, and one more thing... How do you feel about cinnamon rolls?

Becoming Light by Riley Nash

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️🌶️

So, I’m super picky about reading trans characters in romance due to my trans son. My mama bear instincts come out if I don’t think the writer did it justice.

Having said that, this is far and away the very best trans representation I have ever read. I cried like a freaking baby reading pretty much every page.

Bravo to you Riley Nash! It was incredibly brave to write something so personal. I wish more people would put themselves out there but I understand why they don’t. So I am just in awe!

Kota had my heart from the first word and I cheered him on and cried with him every step of the way. I hate with a vengeance when parents don’t accept every part of their child, it fucking kills me.

And Jamie? My god, he stole my heart when he asked his name. And then when he asked for an explanation of Kota’s body I was a total goner. I don’t think he could’ve been a more perfect lover for Kota.

Absolute sheer perfection and I heard through the grapevine that there will be a full length book and it will definitely be my most anticipated.

“I don’t know him in any sense other than the physical, but I already need him.”

Joey and Nick are captains on the Hockey and Football teams at Darby U. I loved being back in this world, as I adored Hidden Scars. This book was so dang sexy and had me hooked from the first chapter. Excited to read more in this anthology—if this one was this good, can’t imagine how great the entire anthology is!! 👏🏻👏🏻

All done! Overall I enjoyed this! Many of these stories are intended as teasers for future books so there’s lots of cliffs and HFNs. Personally I don’t mind this but it’s something to be aware of. It was such a fun way to kick off Pride, I’m so glad I got the opportunity to ARC read for this anthology 🤗 The standouts for me are Off Sides, Becoming Light, and An Unexpected Beginning.

Peris and Abel are 2 CSA survivors who go to the same high school. Peris is a popular jock and Abel is the school’s biggest slut. They have an ongoing feud and then they become foster brothers 😳

I don’t hate bully romances but I do need solid reasons for why the MC is being bullied. We eventually get that but for quite some time I really didn’t get why Peris hated Abel *so* much. If you like bully romances & degradation you might enjoy this! Definitely check the TWs there’s on-page CSA flashbacks and self harm to name a few.

“‘Cause even with your dick in my ass, you’re still worthy of the love you don’t think you deserve.”

5⭐️3🌶️

Nelly is finally ready to leave her abusive husband so she calls her best friend Wren in the middle of the night and Wren hops on a plane to rescue her. They road trip back to Wren’s house in California and revisit that one kiss they shared all those years ago.

This was just lovely to read 🥰 Nelly is in such bad shape at the start and Wren is an amazing friend. Wren’s been fighting her own feelings for years but having to share a bed and then having Nell come on to her tests her in new ways but *still* she wants to cool things down until Nell can process her pending divorce. The love was so strong and obvious between them and it made the spice all the more special.

“She’s always been completely off limits. She’s my best friend — my straight best friend — but I’m also ridiculously and pathetically in love with her.”

- [x] Trouble by Nyla K
4⭐️3🌶️

Tate and Lance are former roommates who hooked up once but then Lance panicked, ran away, and ended up marrying a woman. They hadn’t spoken for 16 years until a chance meeting in a gay bar bathroom (via glory hole!!!!) during Pride.

Even though second chance and cheating aren’t my favourite tropes, this was still enjoyable because wow do they have chemistry! I loved how relentless Lance was in his pursuit of Tate to apologise and reconnect even though he still seemed conflicted over his sexuality. I’ll probably read the full book version of this just to see how everything plays out.

“So much doubt was swirling inside me, I was about to leave and never look back. And that’s when God sent me a sign… Through a glory hole.”

5⭐️4🌶️

What are two not-so-out college jocks supposed to do when they’re stuck on campus during a long break? Especially after a nameless hookup and then running into each other at the gym?? 😏🥵

Football player x submissive hockey player - this book is off the charts hot! It starts out with a bang and then keeps the heat high while sprinkling in touches of Nick’s sweet tenderness and Joey’s inner conflict. I’m seriously impressed by how much development (and smut) was crammed into 7 chapters and I’d love to see these two get a true HEA versus a HFN. This is part of the Darby U Hockey Boys series but stands on its own.

“Again? You got off two hours ago.”
“Cinnamon rolls now give me a hard-on.”

- [x] Becoming Light by Riley Nash
5⭐️2🌶️

Kota wakes up from top surgery but instead of his best friend being there to take care of him, it’s her dad - who also happens to be the first person Kota confided in about his gender four years ago and has been crushing on ever since.

I fucking loved this! God I hope it gets expanded into a full book. Kota was so sweet and lovely - I cried so much in the beginning over how he was hurting. And Jamie was such a soft, perfect caretaker. Their romance developed so sweetly and the spice was both incredibly hot and respectful. 10,000⭐️

“Giving a guided tour like my privates are the special exhibit at the Louvre wasn’t top on my list of smooth, hot gay sex moments, but somehow it’s even better.”

- [x] Discovery by Nicole Dykes
4⭐️3🌶️

Very cute fluffy short about a high school graduate (Mason) who goes to live in his grandfather’s cabin with his best friend (Sarah) so they can both live as openly gay people.

They both find love at a local restaurant - Mason with the owner, Owen and Sarah with the waitress, Patty.

Zero angst. Just a beautiful story about first times and falling in love.

“I still have no idea why my grandfather left the cabin to me or whether he’d have fully accepted me for who I am. But what I do know is that it doesn’t matter.
It led me here.”

- [ ] Lost in Her by Harleigh Beck
3.5⭐️3🌶️
Melanie & Jessica become stepsisters suddenly and on their first family vacation they get abducted! Melanie holds a lot of resentment towards her new family members because of how her parents split and the circumstances around her mother’s unfortunate death. Forced together to survive, the girls find they have more in common than they once thought.

This was fun! The beginning was really exciting, the middle was angsty, and the end was hot, hot, hot! I didn’t really like or understood any of the parents so the interactions with them read kind of weird to me but overall this was an enjoyable sapphic romance.

“Some will be fine with us being a thing, and some won’t. We’ll face it together, okay? I don’t want to live small.”

- [x] An Unexpected Beginning by Cora Rose
5⭐️2.5🌶️

Just give me the full book right damn now!!! Dean runs a garage and hired Avery a while back to do the admin stuff so he can spend more time on the cars & bikes. Avery gets assaulted by his roommate and suddenly finds himself homeless so Dean steps in. Avery’s always had a crush on Dean and after Dean sees Avery in his preferred clothing (skirts/crop tops/etc) he realises he’s not quite as straight as he thought!

Age gap, office romance, with a bi-awakening - Cora does it so damn well. We’ve briefly met some of the characters here before but this stands completely on its own and is an excellent addition to future books where these characters (MCs & side characters) will get to shine!

“You wear whatever the fuck you want, Avery. If that’s skirts and high heels and lipstick, then so fucking be it. My customers can deal or they can fuck right off.”

- [x] All We Are by Jesse Walker
**The author notes that it’s not meant to be read as a standalone and I haven’t read this series, therefore I won’t be rating this one**

This story follows a group of friends attending a Pride event in a big city. It’s clear that where they’re from most of them aren’t out or necessarily open about their genders or sexuality so this event offers them a chance to be free.

“Emotion sears the back of my eyes. It’s so simple, so fucking silly, holding this boy’s hand. And yet it feels so big.”

- [x] Lost & Found by T. Ashleigh
4⭐️3🌶️

Such a fun bi-awakening story! We start off seeing Owen in college and one of his friends kisses him to find out if he likes kissing guys or not. Owen doesn’t hate it but also doesn’t give it much thought until he finds himself many years later attracted to his male assistant, Lance. With his father threatening to arrange a marriage for him, Owen realises if he never tries to figure out his sexuality he might never get the chance!

I’d love to see this expanded in a full book! I loved Lance’s character, their hunger for each other, and how Owen quickly came to accept his feelings for Lance and then wanted to tell everyone about him. It’s a very sweet & steamy little read!

“Maybe I’m just a little bisexual. Ugh… Is that even a thing? Can someone just be a little bisexual?
I need a fucking mentor.”

- [x] Bi The Way by Isabel Lucero
5⭐️3🌶️

Aiden and his best friend (and on/off FWB) have been searching for a third to have a threesome. Since Aiden is straight and Victoria is bi, it seems obvious that they’ll find a girl to play with so Aiden is completely shocked when in walks Oliver. Rising to the occasion, Aiden fights through some obvious discomfort and it unlocks some buried feelings.

Oh my heart just felt for Aiden. Confiding in your parents about a crush and then being told repeatedly that liking boys is wrong must be so hard but since he also liked girls he just accepted it. Oliver was just the right amount of pushy to help him work through those struggles and he was wonderfully patient as well. I’d love to see an expanded version where they could really take their time with each stage of intimacy but for a short story this hit all the notes for me and I loved that Aiden pretty much immediately came out to his friends. Victoria was a fantastic side character and I’d be interested in her story too!

“If I were just gay, maybe it would’ve been different, but I convinced myself that because I liked girls, I could still be happy. Eventually, I just got used to it. I didn’t allow myself to see an attractive guy and think more than that.”

- [x] The Love Triangle Expedition by Hayden Hall
4⭐️4🌶️

Three best friends have been orbiting each other for years without anyone making a move. On a camping trip they each encourage the other to go for it, thinking they’ll step back to let their friends be happy together… but they all actually want the same thing - each other all at once.

Damien, Tanner, & Elliot were fun characters. There was a good mix of friendly banter, spice, & vulnerability and it’s got me intrigued about the series these boys come from. It’s nice to have fireworks to close out the anthology and this story definitely has a big bang 🥵

“Between the parts of my heart I had given Damien and Tanner, I was missing two thirds of myself.”

This anthology ended up just being alright for me. Overall I wanted more stories that were complete, not just teases for future novels.

Here’s my reviews of my favorite stories included in the anthology:
Becoming Light by Riley Nash - 4 stars
This story is the sweetest beginning and such a tease for hopefully more from Kota and Jamie in the future. What starts as an emotional first encounter between a college student and their best friend’s dad turns into a sweet, caring relationship full of support and growth. Kota and Jamie are put together during some of the hardest moments of each of their lives and they help each other to start to thrive rather than just survive in their own unique ways - Kota being full of empathy and sweet support and Jamie being full of well meaning awkwardness and unwavering dedication to being there. These two made me smile even when times were tough and I’m really hoping we see more about them in the future!

Off Sides by Andi Jaxon - 4 stars
Joey and Nick have my whole heart! This story was so much fun to read and I loved how it explored a relationship between two jocks and alpha males. What starts as an anonymous hookup turns into a relationship neither of them were expecting when they went to the club. Joey is captain of the university’s hockey team and Nick is one of the captains of the football team - there’s a lot of pressure on both of them to set a good example for their teams.

They have so many sweet moments but there’s definitely some angst in the story that added to the whole vibe - together Joey and Nick explore their sexuality and get closer than they ever planned. They’re perfect for each other and bring out the best in each other. I’m really hoping to see more of them in the next Darby U book!

Lost & Found by T. Ashleigh - 3.5 stars
I loved that this story took us through Owen and Lance’s complete whirlwind relationship. Owen has been questioning his sexuality for years after one kiss in college rocked his world. His assistant Lance makes him question things even more. Even though they maybe shouldn’t, they agree to experiment to see if Owen truly is bisexual. I loved the way both Owen and Lance come alive when they’re together once they finally gave in to their attraction. Even with the misunderstanding, they work through it quickly and like adults and I loved that! These two were really cute together.

This is a complete, short story that is related to the Darby U series.

This was a really great story between Joey and Nick. We saw them both in Hidden Scars and a lot of the characters from that book appear in this story. I recommend reading Hidden Scars first but it’s not required. I absolutely loved the dynamic between Joey and Nick. I am a sucker for same-size athletes! Add in a submissive partner and their dynamic couldn’t have been better. I also loved the Worthy theme that is present in this short story. Since it is a short story I felt like it was a bit rushed and didn’t feel quite complete; I would absolutely love to read a full-length novel about these two!

Lost and Found by T Ashleigh
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is a complete, short story that is loosely related to Tequila Kisses. You do not need to read that book before this short story.

This is a bi-awakening, boss/employee, low-angst romance between Owen and Lance. We first met Owen very briefly in Tequila Kisses, as he is friends with one of the main characters. It was really fun to see his story and even get some quick peeks into Sterling and Ledger’s life (you will not be lost at all if you didn’t read Tequila Kisses). This is a fast-burn, insta-love romance because it is a short story, however, I felt it was completely believable and had no issues with how fast everything moved between them. It was a beautiful story of self-acceptance and fits perfectly with the Worthy theme! If you have read and loved T Ashleigh’s stories before this is a must-read and if they are a new to you author I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Make Me Pretty by Marie Ann
5 stars, 3 smut
This is only a small portion and it's already worthy of 5 stars. These two are insane - I mean this in the best, my babies are so twisted, I love it so much, way. They have so much to unpackage, and in common without realizing it. They're playing a twisted game and it's fun watching them lose their minds over the other. It's clear they're going to have a deep obsession with one another. Peris has a deep "disgust" regarding Abel and Abel loves to use that to manipulate Peris. The way they speak, the way they act, it's building this fire between them that's about to become uncontrollable. As I said, this is only the beginning. What they've been through, oh man, we are being set up for heartbreak & passion. So. Much. Passion. Be it hate, desire, or love, it's so much. They're brutal. Peris reaches deep into his darkness and takes it out on Abel. Yet Abel doesn't let that stop him. He wants to push Peris to his breaking point. I think they both will do so much to the other that will drive them both completely wild. It's going to be delicious and I'm here for the "filth" that they are sure to bring.
These two suck you in and I can not wait for the rest of their story. Just...wow.

Becoming Light by Riley Nash
4.5 Stars, 2 smut
Kota has a lot to process but when he does, when he tells his truth, it's so freeing. When he's able to get top surgery, plans change regarding who is going to take care of him. While he was worried at first, it ended up being exactly what he needed. Same as Jamie. These two needed to come into each other's lives. Jamie accepts everything about Kota, no questions asked. And Kota sees the pain Jamie harbors and does what he can to help him work through it. It's fast-paced but they feel deeply. I'd love to see more from them. Kota's journey thus far has been hard, but his finding himself, and becoming himself, is beautiful.

Wren by Ashley James
4 Stars, 2 smut
Wren is the best friend that everyone needs. She's fiercely protective and loves Nelly completely. Emotions run high with Nelly and the circumstances she's in. Wren, being a good person, denys herself of her deepest desire. Everything she does, she does with Nelly in mind. Making sure she's okay. I hope there's more to their story. Nelly's going to have a lot to work through, but something tells me that what she's beginning with Wren is going to be deep, maybe sometimes complicated, but worth it.

Trouble by Nyla K
5 Stars, 4 smut
Lance and Tate have one hell of a journey ahead of them. The history they have, the way they ended, the hurdle of who Lance is now, it's all standing in their way. Tate is someone who doesn't do feelings. He shut that side of him off when the one person he wanted walked out on him. He's losing control of himself now. They both are. It's only the beginning of their story, but they both are determined to rewrite their lives. I can't wait to see how this plays out. It's going to be emotional and dramatic. They have so much to unpack and push through.

Off Sides by Andi Jaxon
5 Stars, 4 smut
I need more. These two have this insane spark. They come together so intensely and it's explosive. They both feel this sense of completeness from the other. They pick up on what the other needs and wants immediately. Nick sees what Joey needs and gives him it. They both crave something no one else has given them before. I was hooked. I feel that there is so much more to come from their relationship, and I want to see all of it. Their insta-infatuation is sure to morph into all consuming love.

Discovery by Nicole Dykes
4.5 Stars, 4 smut
Fast-paced, insta-lust turned love. I wish this one was a bit longer. These two are so cute. Self discovery when you least expect it. Owen and Mason are exactly what the other needed.
Mason needed to learn more about himself, open up the possibility of coming out, and learn to be on his own outside of his small town.
Owen needed to not be afraid. Mason comes into his life and shows him that its okay to stick with one person when the right one comes along.

Lost in Her by Harleigh Beck
4.5 Stars, 3 smut
Stepsisters, enemies to lovers, survivors. These two experience something traumatic that opens their eyes to what they truly want in life. Each other. It's a fight, though. They have a moment of easy bliss, but then things become harder again once they have to face the reality of their truth. I would absolutely love more of these two. They're going to have to go through a lot of ridicule, but I feel like they're determined to win and I'd love to see it all play out.

An Unexpected Beginning by Cora Rose
4 Stars, 2 smut
More. I need more. Oh my gosh, what a way to start. This story has the potential to ruin me. It's only the beginning, and I really hope there's more to come. Avery and Dean have a lot to discuss and work out. I can see them blossoming into this beautiful love story. Add in the hint with Ben, phew. I need all the words.

All We Are by Jessie Walker
5 Stars, 2.5 smut
I absolutely loved seeing Will & Way again. These two forever have my heart. Having this glimpse of them at pride, before they received their happily ever after, was wonderful. Way takes big steps in this short. Then, we get a glimpse at Jeremy and Mason. There is so much there to unpack. They are going to have a lot of hurdles to get over when their story comes. Their relationship is already rocky and it's going to get worse. I'm so excited to see how they move past "that night" and find their way to each other.

Lost & Found by T. Ashleigh
5 stars, 3 smut
What a sweet story. A college experience opens up doors for Owen regarding who he is. Unfortunately, he isn't sure. What he does know though, is Lance makes him feel. He's so taken by him. Wanting to know more, feel more, be more. They gravitate toward each other while simultaneously pushing away because they each believe they can't have each other. They work through their hang ups and build a relationship. These two, their love is easy and so pure. Lance is exactly who Owen needed in his life.

Bi The Way by Isabel Lucero
5 Stars, 5 smut
This story jumps right in with the filthy and I'm here for it. Adrien and his best Vic have an arrangement. When they look for a 3rd, she brings in Oliver. While Adrien has trouble with it at first, it opens up a part of him he's been hiding. Oliver was exactly what Adrien needed to allow himself to accept the other half of himself. He embraces his truth and while they just met, and didn't say so, you can feel them falling for each other. It was a super steamy story that also gave us two characters that found each other exactly when they needed to.

The Love Triangle Expedition by Hayden Hall
4.5 Stars, 4 smut
Three best friends who are all afraid to take the leap. Elliot has been in love with Damien and Tanner for as long as he's known them. They each hold half of his heart. He struggles with having to hide his love and desires and believes they would never want him. He hates thinking about the day they find someone because he knows he wouldn't be able to handle it. A camping trip brings them all together and they each push one another to go for what they want. They all feel so deeply. I would love to see their story expanded. There are going to be hurdles, but the end will be explosive.

This whole anthology was amazing. So full of love and acceptance. I loved every single page.

took me 10 days to finish this anthology which i’m ashamed, however, i finally had the chance to finish this. anyways, as of now i’m *impatiently* waiting for Marie Ann to drop the full length version of “Make Me Pretty” because i need those two and their story more than i need oxygen.

“Whoever they are…they don’t control you. You control you. Take back your power with me. Take it out on me. ‘Cause even with your dick in my ass, you’re still worthy of the love you don’t think you deserve.”

now THIS is pure literature. too good. too. damn. good. i need more of Abel and Peris’s story more than i need oxygen. my heart hurts for them and the amount of trauma they endured, especially Abel. from page 1 to the end, it was so fucking good. i love how Marie Ann’s writing has developed and gotten so much better over the course of different books she has written. fuck and i love how abel and peris are two complete opposites yet somehow make so well. this isn’t your conditional love story, this is raw, this is painful, this is beyond dark romance.

as i said, i NEED the rest of their story NOW. i don’t know how to explain it, but even with the shortness of this story, it somehow managed to impact me so much. right now, i feel quite speechless. i will not be able to die peacefully until i get to read the full story of Abel and Peris and see what happens next.

to put it simply, this story was just too boring. it’s probably my preferences when it comes to books but this story lacked something that i cannot put my finger on. that goes for both characters (Wren and Penelope) and the plot was just…meh. plain, uneventful, and kinda boring as well. Also, the slow burn of things just didn’t really do it for me since i’m not a slow burn type of girl.

what the fuckkk why are all the good stories “to be continued…” it’s actually so annoying. i just know that Lance and Tate’s story is going to be filled to the brim with drama, suspense/angst, loads of steam, and most likely lots of tears. as always, can’t wait to read their full story and Nyla K did not dissapoint.

not bad of a story. i found that there was little to no plot which i personally did like but one thing i really liked was the smut and how kinky it all was, definitely never read about cinamon buns playing a big role in a movie but here we are.

Becoming Light by: Riley Nash

wow. out of all stories so far in this anthology, this one had to be the one that isn’t “to be continued..” and is over?? ugh. this story was so sweet and real that it made it so easy and enjoyable to read. this was also my first transgender book i have ever read and it was so interesting to learn more and explore different things. nonetheless, such a good and enjoyable read.

really cute and pretty fast paced overall. Owen and Mason’s story was cute and I liked how expressive they both were with their emotions. It made for a decent mini story and nice introduction to me for this author. Only reason I rated it low was because it was just…too soft and cute for my liking (perks of being an only dark romance reader i guess)

definitely a cute and steamy story. i love the whole bad girl x cheerleader trope in this story and i liked the kidnapping part which added originality to the plot. i wasn’t expecting to like this as much as i did but turns out i did.

i enjoyed this more than i thought. i liked how expressive Avery was especially when describing his emotions and personality. his personality is everything and i liked the humour he had. this was my first read by Cora Rose and most likely will not be my last.

DNF only because the first couple pages already started to confuse me so i think it’s best that i read this when i read the previous stories before this one.

office mm romance? sign me up. this story was so cute snd sweet, especially the bi-awakening that has taken place. Owen and Lance were so cute together and I definitely didn’t expect the office trope in this either.

most definitely my second favourite book in this anthology. i love Oliver and Aiden so so much and the sex was so hot. Oliver’s dirty talk is seriously something else.

ohhh my god i actually really liked this one. it barely had much plot but the steam and cute moments totally made up for it all. i don’t know if there’ll be a full length novel on these guys or not (i doubt it) but i wish there was. it started off slow but got so much better as the story progressed. seriously loved this story.

Off Sides by Andi Jaxon 4.5 ✨

Off Sides is set in the Hidden Scars universe, which was so much fun to be back in! It features Nick and Joey who share an anonymous hookup and then realize that they are both athletes at the same university when they recognize each other in the gym (with a hilarious re-meet cute that had me howling).
This short story includes some sizzling chemistry mixed in with a few angst-filled moments but above all, it's a wonderful journey about feelings that unravel slowly and I was so happy to finally meet the mystery man that was in the car when Preston effed off during Hidden Scars.
I wish we would get more of Nick and Joey's romance but this worked perfectly for the short story anthology and leaves off with a HFN resolution.

I received a free copy of this short story via Indie Author Creative and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Becoming Light by Riley Nash 4 ✨

Beautifully written, this is a story about Kota realizing that he is trans and getting top surgery..only to then being cared for by his best friend's dad since his best friend has to deal with an emergency. It's a story filled with angst and compassion, with trusting your instincts and accepting love.
While I was a bit iffy about some things that happen in here (and this could totally just be me) considering Kota just had top surgery and yet...performed certain acts as if there was no pain at all (again, take this with a grain of salt, I was going off the notion that whenever I had back surgery, I wanted to stab any person who touched me much less get hot and bothered with them while I was recovering), I still really liked how Riley described this blossoming love between Kota and Jamie.
This really is a story focused on love - loving yourself and finding romantic love. If you're a fan of age gap and best friend's dad, check this out!

I received a free copy of this short story via breathlesslit (& the author). All opinions are my own.

Make Me Pretty
Marie Ann
⭐️.5 // 🌶️

This story follows high school basketball star, Peris, and his foster brother, Abel. I’m a dark romance reader at heart and this one just had so many…alarming aspects to it. I have read everything that Marie has ever put out, so before you come at me with “her books are an acquired taste,” I’m well aware. I have loved almost everything she has ever written.

To be honest, this one has me really baffled. The theme of the anthology is worthiness and acceptance; this story didn’t encompass that to me. There were a few lines at the end of the story, which made an attempt at showing how this fit that theme, but everything Peris does and says to Abel negates any effort put in. Peris is AWFUL to Abel; there is no redeeming him. Ever. The degradation in this story, is not degradation. It’s abuse. No one will convince me otherwise.

There were many instances in this story that I had to go and look up words because I knew they were being used wrong, and it really took away from the story for me. The “kinks” missed the mark for me. They were all just another way to cover up the way Peris abuses Abel and shows him that because he is the same sex as him, Abel is not worthy enough to be loved, or really even liked by anyone. Everything about these two is SO unhealthy, and due to the way they both were, and acted, I felt zero connection to either of them.

If you’re looking for a heartwarming story about worthiness and acceptance, I don’t feel like this story has that. Please keep in mind that this is MY opinion on this story and I know many that have loved it. That being said, there was a lot of telling in this story and very little showing, which made it extremely difficult for ME to read and relate to. Please make sure to check trigger/content warnings before you pick this one up.

OKAY ASHLEY, I SEE YOU!!! We know Ashley has strictly written MM since she came onto the scene, and this is her first FF romance, and I am speechless. This short story is SO DAMN GOOD!!!

Wren and Nelly are best friends, and when Nel runs into some trouble with her husband, Wren has no issue dropping everything to help her friend. This is a story of a girl, Nelly, regaining her confidence and accepting who she is, and where she’s at. Wren works SO hard to show Nel that she’s worthy of love, and a good, healthy relationship!! I fell hard, and quick, for the love story between these two!!

Going on this road trip with these ladies was so fun!! I loved everything about this story!! The depth, the love, the exploration—it was SO GOOD!! This is a genuine, authentic, and hypnotizing love story!! She’ll roll her eyes at me for saying this, but Ashley yet again, SLAYED at writing a friends to lovers story!!

RILEYYYYY!!! Oh. My. Gosh. This story is so freaking amazing!! It’s heartfelt and wholesome, and all things ACCEPTANCE!!! I truly think, of the stories I have read so far in this antho, this is my favorite!! The second I finished this one I was IMMEDIATELY asking Riley for the full length; I just need MORE of Kota and Jamie!!

This story is an age gap, best friend’s dad, and hurt/comfort, and Riley hit all of these things perfectly throughout this story!! I cannot get over how wholeheartedly Kota and Jamie’s story brings to life the theme of this anthology!! If you want to read something that is acceptance and worthiness at its core, it is this.

Kota is a trans man who finds himself with help and encouragement from his best friend’s dad, Jamie. These two both have their own demons to battle, and the way in which they help and comfort one another through those hurdles is absolutely breath-taking. I couldn’t stop reading this story; I literally flew through it, and when I got to the last page, I wanted to cry because I wasn’t ready to be done with them!!

Riley, you knocked this one out of the park and I look forward to getting MORE of these two men!!!

Where do I start off with this one?? Well, just know, by the end of this one you will never look at cinnamon rolls the same ever again, and you definitely will want more of Joey and Nick. This was another story that at the end I was immediately messaging Andi telling her I needed MORE of these two!! Joey and Nick take place in the same world as the Hidden Scars boys, and it was really nice to see characters we already know, again!

This story is super fast paced but Andi gives us everything we need to understand, and feel for Joey and Nick! We meet Nick who is secure in his sexuality and who he is, and then Joey enters, and he is not sure of who he is, or how he feels. That being said, Nick is Joey’s anchor and safe space and seeing this quick relationship flourish between them was beautiful!

I loved that Nick went above and beyond for Joey, to make him feel safe and accepted. Joey has some things he has to work through and Nick stands at his side, going at Joey’s pace. I honestly loved these two so much and I am PRAYING that Andi will give them a full length!! The way in which Nick makes Joey realize he is worthy of love and affection, and how he accepts every aspect of who Joey is makes me wish we had more people like Nick in our world!!

This one is quick, high heat, and a perfect example of how a partner should always, always keep their partner feeling safe!!
