The first book in a new series by Melinda Woodhall, using a character from her other series. Following a marriage breakdown Frankie Dawson is a Private Investigator who goes home for the first time in 15 years after finding his close school friend, who he fell out with 15 years ago, is dying from cancer and has asked to see him.
This quickly develops into a hunt for a serial killer who has been operating in the area for a number of years and appears to have connections with Frankie’s past. Frankie is a good honest character who you can feel yourself rooting for. At times you are not sure who he can really trust in the local police department that seems riddled with corruption.
A lot in this is revealed about Frankie’s past which is good to know. The action moves along at a good pace and there are a few surprises along the way, the biggest of all at the end of the book. A good few characters are developed in this book and things. have been set up well for future books in this series.
I really enjoyed this fast moving book, as I have other books written by this author. I look forward to catching up on more of her past books and the next book in this series. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys good mysteries and / or good crime fiction.

GR doesn’t have a book summary for this story, but Book Sirens did, which is where I discovered this book. The MC, Frankie Dawson, is a PI, who goes back home to Memphis after a 15yr absence. He was called back by his childhood friend Dwight, who is dying of lung cancer and doesn’t have much time left. Dwight needs to confess something to Frankie about the death of his sister, Franny, more than 15yrs earlier. It’s while Frankie is on his way (from FL) back home that Dwight and his wife are murdered and their daughter, Josie, is the only survivor of the attack. She hid from the killer and now the killer needs to clean up his mistake. The investigation of the murders is the primary storyline. This is not a spoiler because it is how the story started.
There is a secondary storyline about the Wolf River killer, a serial killer that the local police have named after a bunch of remains are discovered in the Wolf River and identifying the remains of several local women who were reported missing. There is also Frankie’s investigation of Franny’s death that has the local law enforcement suspicious of his coming back home.
The story flips back forth between Frankie, Josie, and the killer. There is also a chapter from the perspective of Sherlock, Frankie’s Labrador dog that he recently adopted. As a long-time dog mama, I’m a big fan of doggie detective duos. I have several doggie detective duo series in my GR shelves. However, there is only one series (that I know of), Chet & Bernie, that includes the perspective of the dog (Chet), and Spencer Quinn has absolutely mastered the character of Chet. Not sure if Woodhall is planning to make this a series, but developing Sherlock would definitely add entertaining points to the story, at least for me it would.
Pretty early in the first half of the story, my suspicions were flip flopping between two characters as the suspected killer. For me, this is the fun part of a crime thriller/murder mystery, trying to figure out “whodunit”. It isn’t until the last 20% of the story when the storylines begin to merge that I discover that I was COMPLETELY off-base. I actually like when that happens too! The ending is a frightening scene for Frankie, Josie, and Sherlock.
This story was more cozy mystery than an action-packed, hardcore, crime thriller/murder mystery. I liked Frankie, and not just because he rescued Sherlock (although that is HUGE points in his favor). This was a quick read that I read in two sittings, which included one a very late Saturday night. I want to thank Book Sirens and the author Melinda Woodhall for allowing me to read this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Another great book in this universe. It took me a while to get into the book as I had forgotten what had happened to Frankie and Peyton (I think this shows that it is good to read the whole universe of books but it works as a standalone) This feels much darker and I am looking forward to how the series develops.

This was fast-paced and twisted, which are two things Melinda does well. I found the plot interesting, and it kept me engaged. I read this book in one sitting; it was impossible to put down.

Frankie returns home after 15 years to see a dear friend before he passes on but this is not a trip he is really looking forward to. There are reasons Frankie left home and he really doesn't want to travel down memory lane but he always keeps his word so he returns to face his past demons in Memphis. He also wants to give himself a break after a hard break up and thought maybe he can do alittle reset at home. The only problem is that there is a stream of bodies and bones being found in the Wolf River which are connected to missing women from the area and Frankie as always is in the wrong place at the wrong time and gets mixed up into this mess and a double murder case which he becomes the prime suspect for.
Frankie is your average man who always seems to find trouble even when he is not looking for it and ends up being the fall guy. He is a vey likable character and the type of person who always wants to help those around him. This is set in a small town atmosphere and we get alittle taste of the kind of life Frankie grew up in. I like this character and look forward to hearing more about his life in Memphis
Ms. Woodhall has many sets of stories that focus on certain characters and the adventures they get mixed up into. This is the first book in the Frankie Dawson PI series. You are introduced to characters through others series (I first read about Frankie in the Victoria Lee series) but you don't really need to read them in order to get the stories. Woodhall brings enough back story forward most of the time so you don't feel lost but if you are anal like me then you will want to read all the series in order. Woodhall does a great job with separating the characters adventures while still keeping them together . I have really been enjoying reading all the series.

Took half a star off simply because the characters made me so angry!! You know there’s corruption in the police, why are you telling literally everything to the people that will use that information against you??? Ugh, I literally screamed at certain characters multiple times.
But I’m so glad I finally got around to reading this one, it was so good!! Life and work just kept getting in the way and I didn’t have any time to actually enjoy a book for the past month, so I’m so glad this one was the book that got me out of a reading slump.
The mystery was twisty and well laid out, I couldn’t put it down! I’m excited the read the next Frankie Dawson mystery!

This is a very good start to another Melinda Woodhall series. Frankie Dawson is returning to his hometown to visit an estranged friend. That doesn’t happen, but many other things occur in this fast-paced story. As with other Woodhall books, the characters are interesting and distinctive.
There was a plot twist near the end involving Frankie and the wife of Frankie’s friend that I didn’t think was necessary. Otherwise, I probably would have given this five stars. I still enjoyed reading it and will continue with the series.

I read this series in reverse order which I found worked really well for me. I knew that the unhappiness in Frankie’s life would work out ok so that angst was there but lessened in a good way for me. The case is chilling and eerie. The killer is so unexpected and I really enjoyed the dual perspectives in the narration. Full of twists and unexpected surprises some good some not but if you’re a fan of thrillers you have to read this one!

I really enjoy reading Melinda Woodhall books. His Soul to Keep, Frankie Dawson, PI Book 1 reveals Frankie’s backstory as well as his current situation. Searching for truth and understanding, Frankie takes the reader on an exciting rollercoaster ride

Never disappointed
As a fan I'm never disappointed in a Melinda Woodhall book. Always an escape from the real world into an easy flowing, interesting look at crime and police procedures with a touch of love thrown in for good measure.

Great New Series

Melinda Woodhall has always been one of my favourite authors and this book reminded me why, I am so glad that Melinda has written a series dedicated to Frankie Dawson.
Frankie has had a chequered past, he is a recovering alcoholic since his sisters suicide, he has served time in prison for an armed robbery that he didn't commit and was later exonerated, he has turned his life round by studying and passing his exams to become a PI.
This book is the first of a series and it finds Frankie returning to his home town of Barrel Creek at the request of Dwight Atkins but also to start a new life after a recent tragedy. Dwight had been his best friend until a fall out fifteen years ago, this was to be the start of a very eventful journey.
Frankie discovers a double murder which quickly become linked to bones that are being gathered from the Wolf River, is there a serial killer on the loose ?
As Frankie was the one to call in the murder he straight away becomes the prime suspect but Frankie is a lot more clued up than he was when he was last convicted, no way was he going to go down for another crime that he didn't commit even though the chief of police wanted a quick resolution.
It became clear to Frankie that Dwight's teenage daughter's life was in danger and he was going to do whatever it took to keep her safe.
This story twists and turns, it throws up murder after murder, suspect after suspect and surprise after surprise along with a lot of heartache and a glimmer of hope. I read this into the wee small hours because I couldn't put it down until I found out who the killer was and now I can't wait to see what Frankie gets up to in the next book.

Frankie Dawson left Memphis many years ago after a tragic event that had left staying there unbearable to him. A new tragedy occurs making his home in Florida intolerable so after a dying boyhood friend contacts him imploring him to visit so he can inform him of something important that he feels must be told in person, Frankie returns to Memphis. Unfortunately, he arrives too late and finds himself embroiled in the investigation of a double murder.
His Soul to Keep is absolutely my favorite Melinda Woodhall book at this point. I only state this as there are still many Woodhall books I have not yet read but they are all on my to be read shelf. I was first introduced to Frankie in a book in one of Ms. Woodhall's other series. I was drawn to his character there because he was good-hearted and determined to help someone who really needed someone. This trait carries over in this new series. I also love the addition of Sherlock, his new canine partner. As well as a terrific investigator, Sherlock is a great emotional support dog.
This book is an enthralling fast paced mystery thriller. I only reluctantly stopped reading when I had to take care of other matters. There are several wonderful characters that hopefully will be further developing in future books. The editing was great. If there were any errors in the story I was too caught up in it to catch them. If you only read one mystery thriller I highly encourage you to read this one.

His Soul to Keep us the first book in the Frankie Dawson series and it delivers! Frankie has had sone tough breaks and has turned his life around when we last saw him he had even found hard earned love. Sadly this book begins with that relationship on the rocks and close to ending with Payton and as the story unfolds we find out why. That of course is nit the main focus of the storyline. Frankie has gone home to make things right with his best friend Dwight who has reached out to him saying they need to talk he has a confession to make about what happened to Frankie’s sister 15 years ago and he wants Frankie to protect his family. Dwight won’t tell him in email or over the phone and insists he needs to see him in person as soon as possible. Frankie shows up too late to save Dwight and his wife but he is determined to keep his promise to protect Dwight’s daughter pulling him into a deep web of murder, deception and corruption at the highest levels of his home town. Secrets long thought he rued are coming to the surface and it’s a race against time to save Josie and find a serial killer before it’s to late.
This book is so well written and flows beautifully even if you haven’t read any of the crossover series that has Frankie in them. The twists and turns are compelling, complex and kept me riveted to the book. I could barely put it down and if you like police procedural thrillers this book is for you! Gripping storyline and fast paced action will have you wanting more. Definitely a must have on your tbr list!

Wow! This was a hair-raising, roller coaster ride of thrills and suspense with a shocking end that you will not see coming! Melinda Woodhall fans will recognize the star of her newest series. Frankie Dawson, P.I. as well known character from Melinda Woodhall's other series. This character has overcome a lot to be where he is today. I was so excited when I saw that Frankie was going to have his own series where he is the star. Frankie's past and the things he learned from his past make him a great PI, and an interesting character to read about. He is going back home for the first time in many years because one of his childhood friends is dying. He tells Frankie that he urgently needs to speak to him in person. Once he arrives in Memphis, he lands in the middle of a murder investigation and search for a serial killer who has apparently been using the Wolf River as his dumping ground for quite some time. Melinda Woodhall knows how to pull you into her story to point that you will not get anything else done until you finish the book. She also does a great job of providing plenty of suspects to keep you on your toes as you try to solve the mystery. This book was twisty, thrilling and a little dark. Melinda Woodhall once again takes you into the mind of a deviant killer who quite obviously has no regard for the sanctity of life and even derives joy from taking a life. I look forward to reading more in this series. I highly recommend this book to fans of crime thrillers.

I thoroughly enjoy Ms. Woodall's writing. She takes an ensemble cast of characters and focuses on a specific character with each series while including most of the others in a supporting cast sort of way. This time Frankie Dawson is the main focus. He has always been one of my favorite characters because even though he has been through so much with his false imprisonment and the loss of his sister when she was 14, he still tries his best to maintain a positive, productive outlook. Is he always successful? No. He's a recovering alcoholic and he fights his demons of depression and anger. Yet he is an honorable and trustworthy man.
Another of my favorite things about Ms. Woodall's writing is that she shows the reader what the "bad guy" is thinking and doing from his perspective without giving any clue who he/she actually is. And it's always the person you least expect. I thought sure I'd be able to figure it out since I'd read so many of her books, but once again she managed to surprise me.
There is plenty of action, suspense, heart/feeling, and mystery wrapped up in one hard-to-put-down book. I highly recommend Ms. Woodall's writing. I can't wait to see what she has in store next.

And it's always the person you least expect. I thought sure I'd be able to figure it out since I'd read so many of her books, but once again she managed to surprise me.
There is plenty of action, suspense, heart/feeling, and mystery wrapped up in one hard-to-put-down book. I highly recommend Ms. Woodall's writing. I can't wait to see what she has in store next.

Good to see PI Frankie Dawson in his own series. We’ve seen him in previous books by this author but this is the first time he stars in his own. Still traumatised by the death of his sister, Frannie, years ago, when he gets a message that his old friend Dwight needs to see him, he heads back to his home town. Unfortunately he gets drawn into a murder investigation, trying to find the killer but also trying to find the truth behind Frannies death.
While this is a stand alone read, it’s easier to slip into the story, and Frankies background, having read about him before. It’s still a really well constructed plot, fast paced and it draws you quickly into the book. I liked the addition of Sherlock, a stray Labrador who latches onto Frankie, and with a nice twist at the end, it’ll be good to see where Frankie and his family go next.

This book started off well and then got better and better. I read it all in one day as I wanted to just keep reading. There are nice twists and questions other than the obvious ‘who dunnit’ (which kept me guessing to the end). The chapters written from the dog’s point of view make this book something special. I stopped reading this author as the books became too focused on just strong female characters, making them unrealistic. This one, however, has the perfect combination of strong and weak, male and female, those needing help and those receiving it. The storyline and characters are all realistic and well described. I don’t often give five stars as I feel books have to really earn it and this one does. There is not a single thing that could be changed to improve it.

I enjoyed how this book was written. With Frankie being our main man, but all our players having chapters of their own that pulls the story together.
Even Sherlock gets a say. This shocked me at first, but once I got my head round it, I enjoyed it and why shouldn’t he as he’s also the star of the show.
Some really great characters and I’d love to hear more from some of them. Like Josie or Nell.

Another new series from Melinda and although they're all interlinked may be read as standalones too. Frankie is on his own now both personally and professionally and has to return home as his friend is dying. Nothing is quite so easy though! New murders mixed with historic ones litter the story with lots of twists and turns within it too. Really enjoyed this new one and look forward to the next!

Overall I enjoyed this book by Melinda Woodhall, there were a number of solid twists and turns that kept me guessing. There was an unpredictable ending and i look forward to upcoming books in this new series.

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.
I finished this book, but to be honest it took effort. I wish I liked it better, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag, frankly it’s a mess of a book.
Frankie Dawson is a PI, he’s received an anguished call from an old school friend Dwight asking him to come back to his home town of Barrel Creek as Dwight is dying and has something important to tell him. Why doesn’t he just tell Frankie the issue over the phone, or send him an email or even a letter - why does it have to be a dying declaration.
When Frankie arrives in Barrel Creek he finds the bodies of his friend and his wife, of course they’ve both been murdered.
Frankie finds his friends teenage daughter hiding in the house but she runs away frightened that the killer could come back and find her and kill her as she’s overheated her parents discussing a crime, but as so often in this book, at the crucial moment she misses the name of the criminal.
Frankie finds out that there is a serial killer on the loose in the area as well as drug and gun smuggling gangs.
The police initially suspect Frankie but his alibi holds firm although the local police chief wants him to be investigated.
There’s a lot of story in this book, it’s part murder mystery, part Victorian melodrama. It’s got so many strands mixed in that it’s simply not believable. Frankie’s sister died 15years ago of a drugs overdose - or did she, her friend was convicted of killing her boyfriend - or did she, Frankie was sent to prison years ago for a crime he didn’t commit by corrupt police, are the police still corrupt, are they trying to fit him up for another crime.
Frankie is separated from his wife they have had a family tragedy they both have alcohol issues plus Frankie has bought a rescue dog to try and help the marriage.
The story just doesn’t work on any level for me. If the friend simply told Frankie the news over the phone all the nonsense could’ve been avoided and they are so many hackneyed and frankly old fashioned plots that in the end it’s unbelievable and tiresome.

His Soul to Keep is the first book in the new Frankie Dawson, P.I. Mystery Thriller series. It is a spin off from The Mercy Harbor and Veronica Lee Thriller series and while there are some familiar characters in this series, you will meet a handful of new ones. His Soul to Keep is a small town mystery thriller that will keep you on your toes wondering whodunit and second guessing who the killer might be.
If you are familiar with Melinda’s books, then you know who Frankie Dawson is, his story, and his past. For those who don’t know who Frankie Dawson is and want to know more, I would suggest you reading the first two books of the Mercy Harbor series, The River Girls and Girl Eight, first before reading this book so you can have a little background before diving into this book. It isn’t necessary, but if you are alike me you want to know everything before you But beware, you won’t be able to read just one or two books without wanting to read them all.
In this book, we are taken to Frankie’s hometown of Memphis, TN where he has memories that he holds near and hear to his heart and ones that still haunt him. Going home to clear his head and figure out what’s next for his future, he heads home to see his family and to face the town he left 15 years ago. After all Frankie has been through, this book maybe the last puzzle piece to help him become whole.
I don’t want to give much away in this review since you need to read this book firsthand. This book has everything you know and love with a mystery thriller by the author. She takes you an emotional roller coaster ride while you are working out the details behind the Wolf River Killings, who it is, and why/how the killer chooses its victims.
I have loved Frankie Dawson from the first time he was introduced in The River Girls. I am always one to root for the underdog and a firm believer in second chances. I was so excited to learn that Frankie was getting his own series and I can’t wait to see what mystery he solves next as well what life has in store for him and his family.
Highly recommend this book for anyone who loves a good small town mystery thriller and anyone who needs a good book to get lost in for an afternoon.

I am a big fan of Melinda Woodhall's series as I have read and completed almost four of her series and so when I saw that Frankie Dawson who I had met in her other books was getting his spin-off, there was no doubt about that I was going to read it. In this book, Frankie Dawson's marriage is on the rocks and he has just gotten a phone call and email to say an old friend Dwight is dying and hasn't got long left. Frankie heads to his hometown and is too late as he finds that Dwight and Cheryl have been murdered. He ends up being narrowed on as the main suspect, but of course, the only one who knows the truth is Josie- Dwight and Cheryl's daughter and she is being hunted too. Can Frankie protect them both and discover what is happening as he soon finds himself right in the middle of a decades-long serial killer known as The Wolf Creek Killer murder spree. The killer also connects to Frankie as the killer killed his sister Frannie made it look like a drug overdose and sent Frannie's best friend Lacey to prison for her boyfriend's murder despite her innocence. I enjoyed this one and the twists and was good to see Frankie back in action as though he is always miscast as a villain, he is someone who is a genuinely nice guy who wants to help solve crimes and find the real "villains", not the innocent ones like himself who were thrown under the bus and used as scapegoats. PS - I also loved his sidekick, a dog named Sherlock. I am now looking forward to reading more of Frankie's series and hopping onto Bailey Flynn's also.

This was a good book overall. The plot was well developed and interesting and I would continue reading this series to see where Frankie and his crew go in the future. I loved that Sherlock the dog had a couple of chapters and they were perfect. I thought Josie was a great character and she was portrayed with emotion that fit the situation. I would also like to learn more about Kinsey and Ranger, if the series stays in Tennessee.
Why didn't I give the book five stars? Two reasons. First - the description of Frankie. He is a tall skinny guy with scruffy whiskers. What's wrong with that? He was described as skinny so many times in the first half of the book, I thought I would lose it. I'm talking to the book, "I know he's skinny." And not with different descriptions or words, but "skinny", and occasionally lean or thin. It wasn't a deal breaker, but it kept pulling me out of the story. Please work on his description or just leave it out most of the time. It did get better later in the book. Second - this was relatively minor, but I think it should have been integral to the story and even the ending. Josie runs away (I'm not giving anything away really), but at one point Frankie finds her and he doesn't once ask if she's hungry or cold or anything or offer to bring food to her. No basic care and it seemed like a miss to me.

This is the second Melinda Woodhall Series I started reading and found I thoroughly enjoyed this book. My attention was grabbed right from the start and kept it all the way throughout the book until the end. Frankie Dawson, main character, who travels back to his home town to see his high school best friend and finds him and his wife murdered. Frankie gets pulled into the investigation and works at determining who is the murderer.
Melinda is excellent at creating twist and unpredictable turns so things won't happen as you may expect. There is so much going on in this book. It moves quickly, is realistic, informative, lots of action, entertaining, mystery, suspense, scary, tragic, locality, family, and love. It was so good I re-read the book. The book even better the second time around!
