In a quiet neighbourhood in Singapore, a body is found inside a locked apartment.
Tasked with identifying the deceased, Inspector Ibrahim has his work cut out for him. With no identity documents at the scene, and no neighbours who remember the resident, his only clue is a set of diaries written in English, Malay and Arabic.
Partnering with Station Inspector Jafri, Ibrahim translates the diaries. They discover the story of a bomoh, a traditional Malay shaman. It is a story of sorcery and occultism, vice and sin, madness and damnation.
But the diaries won't give up their secrets so easily. A terrible evil lurks within their pages.
Found it pretty fun to read what is basically a villain's diary. Like all good villains, he thinks he's the hero. He does get what he deserves but I felt that it was underwhelming, like his comeuppance wasn't satisfying enough. I wanted even worse things to happen to him. The ending just didn't cut it for me. Because of the diary format, I was denied the opportunity to read what actually happened. I didn't feel enough schadenfreude .
There were also a few typos I found when reading that took me out of the story.
Wow. Read the whole thing in a day or so. Easy 5 stars.
Just be aware that the book gets into the main character's degenerate sexual life many times. It's not pornographic (in my opinion) and cuts out before it gets too explicit, but it's something that readers should know.
