A Creative Rebel's Guide to Writing Amazing Fiction

Rate this book
Creative Flow has blessed me with 39 novels that have collectively sold over five million copies, in 16 languages, in under 8 years, earning me over $10 million and over 50 spots on The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and foreign bestselling lists.

All of my dreams came true because I learned to write amazing fiction.

I wrote this book for the old me. The girl who had big dreams, but no real idea how to write the books she’d need to make those big dreams come true. I wanted to make it easier for her to get to where I am now by sharing what I learned along the way. I wanted her to be able to leap over the pitfalls where I stumbled, avoid the challenges that held me back, and glide past the emotional despair, mental anguish, and burnout I faced.

I wrote this book because my readers said that no one else writes books like me, and I thought… well, I bet I can teach some people how and humanity could benefit from better books being written.

Ultimately though, I wrote this book because it was fun, and I enjoyed writing it immensely.

I hope you love it and that it helps you on your creative journey. I hope all of your dreams come true because you learn to write amazing fiction. Don’t ever underestimate where it can take you.

Love,
Meg

A Step by Step Guide on Writing a Book That Every Author Can Use!

This is a fantastic book if you are new to writing, have no clue what you are doing, and want to write a book. It is also a fantastic book if you’ve been writing for a while, or are a seasoned writer as it has wisdom for all stages of the process from newbie to burnout.

The layout of this book is so organized and Meghan really takes you step by step in order from Book Idea to Hitting Publish. It’s easy to follow and her advice is gold. It helped me so much in figuring out why I was stumbling around in my draft with no direction and she recommends key writing craft books, and personal tips to help you navigate the writing journey!

Even better, she dives into the mental side that comes with being a writer. The self doubt, fear, and struggles that cause most people to not finish their book and gives excellent advice on how to navigate these things and how to keep a positive mindset on the author journey.

She gives you all her keys to success in this book, and everyone who reads this will likely find something they needed to know!

First and foremost, the fact that Meghan is writing a fantasy book makes me beyond happy. We all know she can create damn good characters, so I’m beyond thrilled to see what she’ll do with world building.

Second, I was given an advanced reader copy of this book.
And honestly, a lot of the advice given is sound advice. As a writer, I sometimes get stuck in my own head, and this book offered us insight into the magic behind Meghan and her success as an awesome fiction writer. A lot of what she offered is advice I’ve already begun using in my own work.

I definitely recommend this for anyone who also loves to write. And if you don’t love to write, but you love reading everything Meghan writes (look, I’d read her grocery list for goodness sake!) that’s also a good reason to read this. She also offers insight into how some of our favorite heroes and heroines were written, which was a lot of fun. It’s like peaking behind the curtain!

I am so excited that Meghan is writing a fantasy book, and I can't wait to see what she does with world-building since she's so good at creating unforgettable characters. I have to say that much of her advice benefits any author. So I recommend this book to anyone who loves to write or wants to venture into writing.

This is a self-congratulating money grab with a misleading title. Too much woo-woo ("I am so amazing that when other authors talk to me about story structure, I have no idea what they mean. instead, I just tap into the energy of the creative flow and write bestselling books") and little to no actual craft advice. The only valuable advice in this book is to buy Dwight V Swain's and Debra Dixie's actual craft books, so do that and give this a pass.

I really wanted to read this book because I have been slowly working on writing a story over the past few years. I’ve made it to about 25,000 words and have hit a stumbling block. For so long this idea has been ruminating in the back of my mind and I finally sat down and started writing. I got the prologue done very quickly and then started writing, knowing exactly what happens with the two main characters. I know how their story starts, what their history is, and how this book ends, but about the time I got to the 25,000 word mark, I ran out of steam. I don’t know what happens in the middle. What transpires in the story between these characters in that middle section before we get to the climactic conclusion? I’m stumped. So when Meghan announced she was releasing this book on how she writes her stories and she was going to impart her wisdom on the world, I needed to read it. Maybe she could help me with tips or tricks on how to navigate this middle that is giving me so much trouble.

Once I started reading, it became obvious quickly that a couple of things were going to happen. I was going to take a lot of really good pointers away with me when I finished reading, but before I got to that point, I was going to be completely overwhelmed. I don’t type that sentence to freak any aspiring authors out, I just know based on my personality and way of thinking, I am going to need to proceed very slowly and parcel out all the info I’m highlighting and digest it little by little so that I don’t just try to ingest this data dump and sink my story before I even get going again.

It's clear to me that Meghan knows what she’s talking about. She’s written 39 (or 40) books now, so she’s traveled the block quite a few times. And she has a great deal of really good points and advice for people who have kicked around the idea of writing a story. And to be perfectly honest, based on what she’s laid out, I have no clue how any author who is a pantser, which I totally am apparently, manages to get a book finished and released. There is just so much that goes into every aspect of a book. I had no idea, really, and I have been reading my entire life.

I could keep talking about SO many points and tips from this book, but here’s my two cents: if you’re a reader who just wants to know what an author goes through when writing a book, this will be a really interesting read for you. If you’re an author who has been struggling, or you are an aspiring author who hasn’t started yet but has had an idea ruminating in your head, you definitely need to read this. If you’re like me, someone who has a number of words typed but now find yourself struggling to get to the next point, I found this a fascinating read. I bet I highlighted over half of the book. Now, having said that, there are countless authors who I have seen release their own practices on how they go about writing their books, and I firmly believe they have a ton of very valuable information to share with everyone also. There is no one tried and true formula that will work for every single person. Other authors may read this book and not agree with some or all of what is presented here. My plan is to research lots of them and glean what I can out of each one.

Will I drop everything to apply what I’ve learned here to my book? Probably not, there’s a lot of outside things going on that don’t allow me to focus solely on my story. But I know I’m looking at my manuscript with fresh eyes now, and I am really excited to apply the building blocks of great fiction. GMC: Goal, Motivation and Conflict. I think this is what I have been missing and why I can’t figure out the middle of my book. My characters lack these three things. So, I’ll be spending my time working on these. This is going to be fun! Good thing I have no deadlines…

Do you have an idea for an amazing fiction story? Now is as good a time as any to get started!

This is one of the most well-written books on writing craft that I’ve read. Meghan March manages to be concise while also being thorough. She shares relevant insight from her own highly successful writing career without once veering into vanity writing. Many times I even wished she had shared more specifics about which of her books she was referencing when she talked about which ones sold the best, which ones were difficult for her, etc.

I highly recommend this book to any writers (not just fiction), especially those seeking to self publish. March gives excellent insight and real-world tips from thinking about your idea all the way through to advice on what to do after the book is published. Three notable exceptions of topics missing or slim included: discussion of writing *steamy* Romance specifically (which I think is March’s primary genre); discussion of marketing; and discussion of financing self-publishing or affording self-publishing costs.

Disclaimers: There is a lot of New Age-y discussion about the Universe guiding you, the importance of energies, etc. There is also a chunk of talk about Alpha Males that I mostly skimmed over. These topics were just enough to annoy me, but not enough to make the advice in the rest of the book irrelevant to those of us who don’t share those beliefs.

TW: drug use, some language, some sexual content.

Do you have people in your head with stories to tell but you have no idea how to write a novel, do you have trouble starting or what to do....if so this is the book for you.

This isn't a step by step dictate on the rules of where, when and how but rather a guide on how to create your personal amazing journey towards writing your novel. Discover the importance of writing amazing realistic characters (and then torturing them with drama) and delve into creating your own universe with secondary characters, background people and events and of course the hero's true purpose.

I have always dreamed of writing a novel and have read many books on the how to write and even what to write but this is the first writers guide I have read that has really inspired and driven me to do it.

Spoiler ......

What has really grabbed me is that Meghan March inspires the reader to get excited about the creative journey which is a breath of fresh air after reading countless books that detail novel writing as a daily job where the hours tick by slowly and the writer lives off coffee and insomnia. I'm excited to begin the journey.

I am new to this creative outlet. Having been an avid reader all my life and spending tons of my time completing book reviews, I finally decided that I could write, too. But, as a reader, I had no clue of where to start, except at my laptop. I read several books on how to write your own book, I purchased programs, and finally, I saw this book. I adore Megan March romances, so I bought this one. I am so happy that I did!

Here is what I loved about this book:
First, I love how down to earth this author is in relating her techniques, her experiences, her successes, and her failures. She was completely relatable for me.

I love how encouraging she was. She exuded inspiration from beginning to end, making the reader feel value. So, if that alone helps her to sell this book, then mission accomplished!
Last, she has so much insightful advice from the beginning of the process to the very end.
I am almost finished with my first book and will follow her advice to the letter to get through the remaining process before I let it go.

So, thank you to this writer for passing on her wisdom to would-be writers!

I was lucky enough to win an ARC of this book and I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed it. I am not usually one to read nonfiction outside of my profession, but honestly I think this book speaks to anyone who wants to be a writer. I have toyed with the idea, started, and stopped a number of times feeling more confident in my professional and academic writing than in allowing my creativity to run free. This book, this guide is really what it professes to be. A guide for anyone who wants to embrace their creativity and write outstanding fiction. I felt supported and seen as the fledgling writer I am. At the same time I felt like I the insight I gained really helped shift my mindset which ultimately is what matters. I have to admit, I feel more motivated to put words to paper than I have in years and I’m willing to see where that takes me. Meghan did an excellent job sharing her process and encouraging others to use what she knows to help figure out their own.

This is such an informative book by the lovely and talented Meghan March. She not only allows us insight at what it takes to pen a story but provides aspiring writers the tools to take their ideas and put pen to paper. The building blocks are great and makes any person feel like they can write their first manuscript. Whether you are here to read this book for the authors fabulous writing and see where an idea takes root and bloom, or plan to write your own story this is a great place to begin. The information she provides is helpful and is perfect for a motivated novelist. I have always enjoyed the complexity of a plot and premise of a story. And when the author takes us on the journey with their characters. Ms. March doesn’t tell us how we can achieve that goal rather she gives us guidance and the experience from a seasoned author. This is a great book to have on hand if you are aspiring or would like the knowledge of what it takes to become a writer of fiction. This is a must read!

After reading and enjoying this author's previous book A Creative Rebels Guide to Winning the Game of Life, I decided to read this book, A Creative Rebels Guide to Writing Amazing Fiction as I was curious to know how Meghan writes such amazing stories time after time. This book had a wealth of information as Meghan shares her experience with the reader, provides guidance and building-blocks and is very encouraging and motivating of others, and while not everything might be applicable to all writers, the information presented can help to shift your mindset.
There is so much that goes into the aspect of writing a book that I had no idea about and it really makes me appreciate all the hard work author put out on a daily basis. This was a fantastic read and I would highly recommend it to aspiring writers.

Meghan is one of my favorite authors! And I was sooo excited to “see” her writing process. As she hasn’t written a book yet that hast stuck with me for years. So to be able to get in her head, so to speak was amazing.

She is so inspiring and this is very helpful to those thinking about writing or just wanting to know more about it.
Her words are real and motivating!
If you are looking for a book that will give you a push to start that creative flow, be it little or big. I highly recommend this one!

First I must say I have been in love with Meghan’s writing for many years. I have read all of her books several times each and keep going back. She has an incredible way of storytelling and drawing readers into the worlds she creates. I have been tinkering with writing short stores for several years and just can’t seem to figure out how to make them better or the next step to have others enjoy them. Why not get advice from an author as amazing as her? I love her supportive words and honest experiences. This book has really made me excited to get my laptop out and start writing!!!

I am an avid reader. Have I dabbled in writing? When I was in junior high, maybe.

This new book by Meghan March will take you on a journey. A journey that will light a fire under the aspiring author and even teach an old reader some new tricks.

The flow and the real words from Ms. March are motivating, encouraging, and honest.

If you are looking for a book that will give you that little push or big push to start your creative flow, I would highly recommend this!

I swear genre writers have the best writing advice. Maybe it's because they're used to getting things done and getting down to business. None of those one book a decade shenanigans.
I always try and rate books based on what they are. In this case, March has written a great guide to getting your first book out of your head and down on paper. Lots of support along the way, as well as good advice for the self publishing route. If you're a seasoned writer or have read a ton of other writing books, you may not find this as useful.
I will say March narrating the audiobook was a nice touch, and I really felt like I was getting the inside scoop.
My only complaint was that March keeps calling her husband an "alpha male" which I thought was kind of off putting.
Otherwise a 5 star read!

Inspiring! Great to hear an insider’s account of running successful indie author business. Good tips of working through writer struggles, from plotting to editing to mindset.

I would have loved some specific examples of what makes a great twist and what the story was that had a great twist.
