An Awfully Big Adventure

Rate this book
"Always chase after the dreams that make you feel like you could fly."

Dreams came to Molly on glittering wings, between fairytale stories and the wonders of her imagination. But as she grew up, those dream-filled days were slowly forgotten.

At age eighteen, in Edwardian England, Molly fears she has grown dull. Now, what feels like a perilous decision weighs heavily on her shoulders. With only a small window of time to sort out her future, Molly turns to her past. Coming to terms with the fact that she grew up too fast for her own good, she decides it’s time to become the person her younger self had always dreamt of being.

It’s not easy, especially around Desmond and his clumsy smile that feels like an adventure all of its own. And when Molly discovers that her sister, Victoria, has been pulling strings behind everyone’s back, it isn’t long before she is hooked into schemes involving George, a gentleman whose mysterious past is filled with limitless stories.

Lurking beneath it all, are family secrets; ones powerful enough to draw everyone together… Or dreadful enough to tear them apart completely.

Hello everyone, I am the author of this book and here are a few things I'd love for you to consider before reading:
1. This is a soft and cozy YA coming-of-age-in-reverse novel. The adventure is finding yourself and loving yourself along the way as you discover your dreams. Suitable for ages 13 and up, no spice, no swearing, no addictions, but does have a moderate romance plot line throughout.
2.The content/trigger warnings. While this book contains lighter themes, I respect and understand that certain readers are affected by certain thematic elements. I hope this list helps you make an informed decision on whether it is the right time for you to read this story. Including but not limited to: grief after loss, mental health topics such as anxiety attacks, depression, generational trauma, PTSD etc, brief mentions of abuse or assault, and alcohol consumption. If you have read this book and believe this list needs to be adjusted, my mind and heart are open, I'll update this list if necessary. I thank you for your kindness and patience.
3. This is part 1 of a duet to be completed by autumn 2023, it is not recommended as a stand-alone, though the ending is still happy and not a strong cliff hanger. Some questions will be left unanswered.
4. Tropes: romanticizing life, ballroom scene, friends-to-..., frenemies-to-..., love of music, forbidden love, first love, wishing on stars, dancing in the rain/snow, anxiety rep, body positive, body neutral, family secrets, being raised by good parents/bad parents/grandparents/single dad and many more.
5. This is a loose Peter Pan reimagining. It focuses on the story of never growing up and loving that silly little kid we used to be. I hope it encourages you to look inward and fall in love with yourself all over again. No characters have original Peter Pan names, but each one has been carefully crafted to fit into a character's identity. It is based during the Edwardian Era (year 1904) and is not a fantasy but contains some fantasy elements such as a belief in fairytales and looking for the magic in everyday things: from a cup of tea to blooming flowers.
In the end, I only wish that this story has left a smile on your face and warmth in your heart.
Happy reading to you all 💖

There was something deeply refreshing & relatable about this story as Molly rediscovers a part of herself that she had lost over the years due to growing up too fast, too soon & struggles with masking her personality.

George was my favourite! I absolutely loved him & his friendship with Desmond. Also, George’s grandparents & Molly’s mum were incredible.

However, I did struggle a bit with how modern the dialogue felt at times. While the childhood friends to lovers angle between Desmond & Molly was sweet, I also felt confused by the almost-but-not-quite love triangle with George. Personally (& maybe it’s the part of me that prefers enemies to lovers) I loved Molly & George’s interactions best & what they brought out in each other.

Victoria was something of a puzzle to me. She was nasty to everyone but her fiancé, and it’s because he’s the only one she can be her authentic self with. Then suddenly she would be super nice to Molly…

There’s an intriguing dash of mystery & I know this is only part 1 of the story, so I am curious how all the threads resolve!

Overall, it’s a sweet, cosy, gentle story touched with whimsy & Peter Pan elements!

I am extremely unhappy with the fact that Ms. Woodland not only wrote a book that completely captivated me from the beginning, but now I must wait for the sequel.

In words I am failing to express, the book was amazing… it gave me all the feels I have failed to feel in a long time.

This book is so good, a nice clean read. With such an amazing message and truly takes the reader on a marvelous adventure.

This book was….i had no idea how to rate this. I thought it was going to be 2-3 stars at the beginning. It was very slow to get started, so I wasn’t sure if i was going to like it or not. Once it picked up I enjoyed it, though it still felt like things took longer than they needed to. And there was so much left undiscussed, but I know she’s going to have further books in the series. I just felt very confused because honesty,….George and Molly seemed to have way more chemistry than Molly and Desmond. Maybe I’ve just read one too many enemies to lovers books, but I felt myself constantly guessing about what was going to happen. It also was very unclear what both of their feelings were towards each other. I like the discussion of childhood and growing up and all of those fantastical things, but it felt like it was being laid on a bit thick at points. That being said, the writing was very poetic, lyrical, and beautiful, and i guess in this style of fiction, it’s kind of the point to have long descriptive paragraphs. It was very beautifully written, and the characters were enticing.

Truly enjoyable, the writing style is beautiful, reminds me somewhat of Lucy Maud Montgomery. The characters are very well developed. There's intrigue and romance and also touches upon deep emotions other than romance. Although upbeat and joyful most of the time Miss Woodland captivates us and takes us on an emotional journey (in a good way).Thank you for a wonderful read!

george is the damon of this story and i fell HARD for him (SOMEONE JUST LOVE THIS MAN PLEASE).
the ending had me so confused about how to feel. i am so biased towards a specific character but i love them all so im just going back and forth about what i want. ugh.

Totally against type

This book was so totally against the typical books I read. I don’t go in much for romance or period pieces. But Molly’s search for her true self, and Desmond’s tortured family life, and the shadows in George’s past that haunt him drew me in. Like Molly, I want to find my fairy wings too.

4.75 I am picking out the best books to read lately holy shit

I LOVED THIS BOOK SO SO MUCH!!!

If you want a wonderful whimsical story about friendships, love, family, secrets, self-discovery, and magic. Look no further!

I fell in love with all of the characters in this book: Jeremy + his whole family. Victoria, Molly and their parents. Desmond (definitely not his parents) but most of all, I fell in love with George!
He has completely won me over, when he got his first chapter I was just as excited as the first time I got Kenji's POV in the shatter me series.... and we all know how much I love Kenji. I was literally smiling so hard and doing a little dance when I found George his first chapter!! I'm dead serious. George is so fucking amazing and he deserves the world, and I truly hope he will learn how to love himself in the next book.
I see myself in Molly, I too wish to see the magic in everyday life, but along the way I've lost sight of the magic. After finishing this book I definitely will be looking for the magic again. I too want my waves and sparkles back and I too want to relearn how to fall in love with myself!!
Jeremy is so loving, Victoria finally got to be the best version of herself, the love the Jones' have for one another is adorable, I love how supportive Cathrine is of Molly, George's grandparents are Icons, Desmond deserves so much better and I hope he will start believing in himself like Molly and George believe in him.
UGHHHH I just love them all so much I could honestly go on about every single character for ages but I wont.
I definitely have thoughts about George, Desmond, and Molly, but I'll keep those to myself :)

I just loved every second of this book and I cannot wait to continue this story! I hope we'll discover more about the family secrets and George, I want more George!! If the second book is anything like this one I will love it forever!

Such a sweet tale of friendship, dreams and of course—no fairytale would be complete without it—romance. This book makes you travel through the ups and downs of growing up (or in this case, NOT growing up) and learning to love yourself through it all 💖

Writing: 4/5, I really loved the way she wrote and the language is so on top notch but some of the current wordings which left artificial feeling somehow, however the whole writing style is sooo gooood and i would like to read more of Shawna's works

Plot: 5/5, It's the best coziest and not so dramatic novel I've ever read. Every character has their own worlds, dreams and preferences and all of them stick together while chasing them even though no one's dream coincides with another. The plot did make me realise how much I've changed and made me want to atleast try to fight for my dreams. Everyone has it hard but the way they look at it and help themselves is what is important because Molly wanted to know and live a dream while the unsure Desmond and George just wanted to run away from them, Molly made them realise that it's worth fighting for.Victoria is my sweetheart, sometimes she can be irritating but when you know that it's just a facade and she's just a girl who yearns love you'll know. Every character, every word is just how they touch the hearts of who reads it.

Characters: 5/5, Really love all the characters!
Molly is our kind, loves the idea of love, books, nature and silly things because isn't the adult itself refers to complication?
Desmond, is such a sweetheart, kind, caring but never got to have a good family which Molly and George offered. His idea of running away is supportive from his real family but he chose to stay cause how can he run away from his home to escape from a house?
George: The one I truly believe I'm in love with, his character is something I always keep a part of in my heart. The always-their-for-friend, the 'confused about his feelings because his bestfriend deserves the girl', the im-here-to-rescue-you-friends and if I go on I'm afraid I'll fill the whole paragraph up. He deserves a whole world
Victoria and Jeremy: Such a sweet side couple who are chaotic yet lovely and found each other and chose each other because isn't it what love is?
Cathryn: My favourite mom and she's such a cool adviser and dreamer
Desmond's parents: Hated them the most! But when I read that Alice wanted to be a mom so bad and looking at how bad she treats Desmond, I realised that darkness can swallow you if you're off hook for a second.
George's Grandparents: Such a cool, fun and happy kind. Granpa really built a house beside the lake cause he can take Garnma swimming every possible summer day. Isn't it the Standard?

I was upset that George and Molly didn't get together because even Desmond knows that they both are compatible to each other and the George knows what Molly's favourite books are, what she likes, what she's feeling, what makes her rile up hahahah i really rooted for them but yes, Love did happen without our control and Molly however found comfort and love in her bestfriend.

“Molly wanted enchantment in ordinary things. So much so, that nothing would ever be ordinary again.”
The character development in this book is phenomenal, as well as the connections. The story dives into not only the main characters development, but in everyone around her. One of my favorite places where the author focused was on Cathryn Jones, Molly’s mother. I was desperately hoping for character development there and I was very pleased with what I got.
Molly’s journey as she continues to grow in mind, but not in heart is captivating. We see the way she describes simple trees and the sky, and the imaginary faeries of her childhood, in such an extraordinary way.
The characters are extremely relatable, which only made me more emotionally attached to every tiny decision they made.
George’s character development was amazing as well! Especially at the end. I’m not ashamed to admit that I was giggling a good deal.
BUT THEN GEORGE. oh my gosh. Shawna Woodland certainly knows how to make her readers sad, and I truly believe she finds joy in that :) George is such an interesting character, seemingly closed off and reserved closer to the beginning, but then from the middle to end, we begin to see his perspective, and it honestly left me without words (in the best way possible) I have become so attached to this character and can’t wait to see more of his character development in book 2!
Shawna Woodland also has a way of writing GOOD plot twists. Jaw dropping, book flinging, (not really I would never) plot twists.
I am beyond excited to read book 2 and cannot wait to learn more about each character!

Steam Level: 🔥 (kissing only)
Trigger Warning: death of parents recounted, deadly fire recounted, brief mentions of abuse

Molly grew up carefree and drawn to adventure and fantasy. Now that she's grown, she's forgotten the girl she once was and lost her spirit of adventure. When her friend Desmond returns after years away at school, he offers her a proposition that will have her reassessing her life and wanting to find herself again. Meanwhile, Desmond's friend George is drawn to Molly's ability to see past his walls and unravel his secrets. As Molly spends time with George and ponders her feelings about Desmond, she will finally discover her true self and discover new truths along the way.

This book left me very confused. I think it's a love triangle, but maybe not? It seemed to be a coming-of-age romance but then turned into somewhat of a mystery at the end. Honestly, most of the time, it felt like there wasn't really a plot at all. We're just following Desmond, George, and Molly around for a month or so as they chaperone Molly's sister and her beau, attend a charity ball, and have clandestine meetings in the woods. I liked George the most, but then at the end it seemed that he's supposed to have a dark side or be hiding secrets of some sort. There's a second book, so originally I intended to read both and see which boy wins Molly over. Honestly, though, after that ending I'm not sure if I even care to read more. I'm sure there's an audience for this, but unfortunately it just didn't work for me.

I absolutely adored this book. It is cozy, romantic, well thought out, and just plain beautiful. This book sure took me a while to read, but I think that life just got in the way & that I started to procrastinate more than I should have. I had accidentally read Book 2 first, which was equally if not even more exciting. Shawna’s second book (Here Dreaming Though Wide Awake) was what got me back into reading. I loved following the lives of George, Molly, & Desmond. I think that diving into Book 2 first was also what caused me to take so long reading Book 1. Book 2 is a bit more dramatic because there isn’t as much backstory or character building as Book 1. I definitely recommend starting with Book 1- this book is necessary if you want to get the full story with specific details that give the story more depth. It was so interesting to compare the major differences between each of the characters. I find myself to be a lot like Victoria, Molly’s older sister. I saw so much personality in each character that is rare to find in some books. All in all, this book was extremely well written and straightforward. I think this style of writing is my favorite. I found it easy to follow and constantly engaging. I hope that Shawna continues to write because I can’t wait to read more of her work!

Well this was a surprise. I picked this book up after seeing the authors reels advertising her book and got it on kindle unlimited. There was a lot I enjoyed about this book some being; sweet charterers, very cute nostalgic writing, clean Edwardian romance. And just the overall whimsical nature of the novel. However halfway through the book a second love interest was introduced and I found that unnecessary and wished she just picked one. Another thing was although this book was the sweetest it was almost too sweet like an overly sweet pastry that was delicious but made your teeth hurt. I will be checking out the authors future works though because this was super sweet with intense cottagecore vibes.

(Also I loved the chapter header illustrations, they were beautiful and the fact that the author did them is just mad impressive)

What a wonderful read! Shawna Woodland’s style definitely reminds me of our beloved Lucy Maude Montgomery. I’m sure that in a clash of two worlds Molly and Anne would be best of friends, seeing wonders in the littlest things around them! And what a refreshing take: promotion love of self, family, friendship, and life partner all in one. The perfect realistic balance that gave me all the cozy feels. This is definitely one of those books that you’ll get even more out of it the second time around. Although some might think it a light read, when you actually take the time to dig deeper, you get to « unearth » (iykyk😜) all the symbolism, mystery, and buildup to what I think will be even more intriguing in the next book! Speaking of build up, this book got me guessing right up until the end!!! Annnd all I can say is, look out for chapters 18,19,23,30 they were my favourite…to name a few 🥰🤩🥳

I read this entire book in two days while home sick from work. Could not have asked for a better read to keep me company. I’d had my eye on it for a while because of the author’s amazing marketing, and it did not disappoint. Despite it being light and whimsical, it also touched on themes about growing up, loss, love, and deciding the course of your life that brought it to a rich and thought-provoking level. Those themes were wrapped up in witty banter, beautiful English settings, and charming friendships. I want to live inside this book.

Such a sweet, cozy book! I don't think I've ever read a book that sparkles quite like this one. It's gentle and soft, with an emphasis on pretty worldbuilding and the emotional growth of the characters within themselves and their relationships with each other. It's set in Edwardian England, but the historical setting is more an aesthetic aspect to the plot, as the story reads like a light-hearted, easy to pick up contemporary that doesn't require too much brainpower...which I honestly found perfect. If the loveliest vintage/romantic academia/cottagecore Pinterest board could be become a novel...it would be this book! I highly recommend putting on your favorite light academia playlist and fairy lights, making yourself a cup of tea, and curling up with this one whenever you need to escape the world for a bit.

okay I have no idea what to rate this book.

here’s what I loved about the book:
1. Sweet and cozy plot
2. A little bit of mystery subplot??
4. Easy to read and felt whimsical

Here’s what I was 😮🤪👀 about:
I FEEL PLAYED !!!!!
1. Love triangle? And I chose the wrong guy? (To nobody’s surprise honestly - BUT STILL.)
2. IT IS NOT A STAND-ALONE. I REPEAT. THIS IS NOT A STAND-ALONE 😂 and there’s no book two date ??? Help???
3. It was marked as a fantasy? But wasn’t fantasy?

Overall glad I read it :) but also need the next one now :) and need her to pick the other guy :)

Thanks to the amazing world of Bookstagram I met a wonderful new friend named Shawna and discovered her book "An Awfully Big Adventure". Now, this isn't a book I would consider my "Normal" read only because it is set in the early 1900's. However, that is exactly why I wanted to pick up this book. I needed a palette cleanse and a romance that was not only different than my normal Contemporary reads but something that would bring my heart all the good feelings. I found everything I had been needing and more in this story. HINTS the highly earned 5 star rating (CLAPPING for you Shawna, this was an incredible adventure in deed!)

Let me share a little bit about this story with you all and then I would love to dive into my reasons for rating this book 5 stars.

The story is told from multiple characters, beginning with sweet Molly and her best friend Desmond and then later on a few (very appreciated) chapters from the beloved and morally grey, George. We get the hints that this story is a romance with it's whimsical feel of the early 1900's and the swoony way people talked, dressed, and danced in the time period. But it is so much more!

It's about finding yourself. Falling in love with YOU before giving your heart to anyone else. And so much more within it's pages. I feel like with a story like this, there is something for everyone. It will find a magical way to touch your heart and leave an imprint on you to carry forever. It was An Awfully Big Adventure indeed.

Because it was such a unique read for myself and I loved the moral behind each character and their personal growths, I just fell over heels in love with this book. Shawna amazed me with her ability to write with beautiful words, shining her heart within each character and story line. I was swooning, I was laughing, and even at parts my eyes had tears. It holds so many emotions that makes for an epic ride in a novel.

I connected with Molly the most. She taught me to find the sparkle in the everyday. The Earth is a magical place and we often loose our sight and wonder. This book is a wonderful reminder to search for the things that bring you love and joy and to always find adventure. It also reminds you to love yourself. It's your greatest adventure in life.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. Especially my daughter, whom I have a copy for when she discovers her own love of reading. Thank you Shawna for being a wonderful friend and for sharing this story and these wonderful and colorful characters with the world. I am looking forward to Book 2!

Well this was interesting. I went into it thinking it would be some kind of cozy fantasy, but it’s actually historical romance, so that was a bit of a disappointment. The story itself follows Molly, who is trying to find herself again after 5 years of growing up too fast and losing her sparkle. We also follow Desmond, the childhood best friend who just got back after 5 years of boarding school, and George, who is dating Molly’s sister, and who can not for the life of him get along with Molly.

The character dynamics were actually quite funny, but although Molly and Desmond were the two main characters, it felt like the author just really liked George the most, and made him the most fleshed out character. I liked him the most too to be honest, but that made the whole story a bit off balance.

I also had some trouble with the building of the story. If I’m being honest, there really was no conflict? I don’t think either of these charachters knows how to say no to anything, because every interaction that could’ve been interesting just went “I think this” “you’re so right for that”.

Also Desmond (love interest) is absent for like half the book, and Molly spends all that time with George and honestly I like the two of them more than I do Molly with Desmond. I’m a sucker for banter and George really provides while Desmond just worships Molly and would never say anything to her that wasn’t purely kind.

It was still pretty funny at some points, and although almost nothing happened for at least the first 40% of the book, it’s short enough that it was easy to get through, and I’m not mad I read it. Would I recommend it? If you’re really in the mood for a easy, very low stakes book then sure, but I don’t think it’s for everyone.

⭐️⭐️⭐️,5/5

A very soft and sweet story🥰 it was a little bit slow at the start but once George was more involved I flew through! I love all the characters and the setting, I’m picturing the prettiest castle estate with flowers and magic and pretty dresses, what more could you want.
I am slightly confused with this kinda little love triangle, like why am I hoping this sweet fairytale type book ends with a throuple😂 I love Desmond and George and I think they would both be great for her, although it kinda feels like George will be endgame- Desmond is her first love from childhood to now but George gets her on another level, challenges her and encourages her favourite parts of herself. Desmond does too to a degree and we haven’t see much of him and her together in this book like we have with her and George, so maybe he would be the same but it kinda feels like they’re not endgame. I’m excited for the next book but also scared because I need them all to be happy!

This book absolutely changed my life. It came at the perfect moment for me and I’m sure that’s a lot of it, but I think anyone could read it anytime and it would still be 5 stars.
The three main characters were like little parts of me. Molly is so relatable and her journey to reconnecting with her self, her inner child, and the magic around her is inspiring to the most.
When I tell you I have been a better mother since reading this… I mean it. I am playing with my kids and playing with myself and looking for fairies again.

I think this book is at the least, a cosy fun historical fiction meets magical realism book.
At the most, this book will start a self healing journey for you.

I loved it! 5/5 🌟A really great read. Molly reminded me much of myself, only a fine bunch of years before I was born. Some description was very repetitive but unlike some other novels, I actually liked the repetition, it made me feel like I was sharing a secret. The fact that Molly and Desmond always met at the creek, also reminded me of a creek I used to live by.

Molly was my favourite mostly because she reminded me so much of me. Or, who I used to be as a kid. Like Molly, I want to live authentically, full of the joy and wonder of a child.

I loved Ms. Jones, Molly’s mother. She was soft and sweet and always fed Molly’s drive for adventure. I think maybe she wasn’t only helping Molly pursue her deems, but also allowing herself to chase her own through Molly.

This story guided me on an awfully nice adventure down memory lane. I plan to come back sometime soon. 💛❤️
