I think the point of this series is to be ridiculous and funny. There are references to all sorts of dystopian/sci-fi movies and books, all with their names changed to something about cats. I don't even know much about the characters besides that they love cats.

Night of the Living Cat Review

4/5 stars

This will be a spoiler free review. Onto the review!

I picked up this relatively new manga series because I saw someone reading them at the library, and I was curious what they were about. The general story is this: There is a virus going around that turns people into cats. If you come into contact with a cat, you will be infected and become a cat yourself. The main characters are all workers from a cat cafe, and they’re trying to escape all the cats who keep being super cute and trying to interact with them. That’s basically the entire plot.

I can’t tell if this is meant to be a serious dystopian series or not. The threat doesn’t feel all that real most of the time, because the cats are so darn cute. Plus, there are references to all sorts of sci-fi and dystopian movies, tv shows, and books, which are hilarious if you get the joke. I only understood some of it, but it didn’t really matter. It was funny either way. Because of all the jokes and the super cute cats this almost feels like it’s supposed to be a parody.

I really liked all the cute cats and the funny moments, but I wish I had a bit more connection to the characters. We haven’t gotten much about their backstories yet. But that could be coming in later volumes. We mostly get these over the top action scenes where they’re using cat toys and catnip to avoid being touched by the infected cats. If you’re looking for a fun series where it doesn’t take itself too seriously, I definitely recommend this series.

Or if you just really like cats. This is definitely a series for cat lovers. I may be a fox fan usually, but cats are also cute. They’re the practical version of foxes. Cute as heck and actually possible to have as pets.

Have a nice day/night everyone!

In the year 20xx, the world was changed by cute kitties. After a virus that turned people into cats swept the globe... Humanity ceased to function and major cities all around the world fell.

Helpless against these adorable kitties, humanity had their civilization stolen away from them.
The surviving humans faced extinction.

Thus began the cat century.

It's rare to find a story which is a ridiculous as it is sublime. Nothing about this series should work beyond the initial premise yet they manage to create a narrative which is compelling and laugh out loud funny.

A new virus is spreading across the world. Rather than the usual zombie approach, this virus turns the infected into cats! Cue exposed bellies desperate to be rubbed, kitten eyes, and other nefarious tactics to lure unexpecting humans to their doom!

At the end of volume two, we were left with Tsutsumi making it to the safety of the escape helicopters and Kunagi and Kaoru travelling to the supposed sanctuary, finding only desolation and no sign of life.

For this volume the story has moved on. Humanity has fallen and we see the writers taking inspiration from many iconic movies. It isn't subtle by any means, as exampled by the chapter called 'Cat Max'.

Kunagi and Kaoru may not have found Tsutsumi but they have found refuge in an old museum. Working with other survivors, their role is to seek out supplies and resources. When another team do not return from a similar mission, they are tasked with rescuing any survivors.

This felt a bit of a bridging volume. We are introduced to a host of new characters and it feels we are moving into a 'Walking Dead' style set up going forward. I look forward to seeing where this goes next. 5 stars.

A cat is a small god...
One can hold against their chest.
If a cat like that were to rule the world
Then what kind of paradise would it be?

Comedic horror describes this series well. More emphasis on the comedy rather than the horror though. Imagine a world where instead of a zombie virus spreading through the world people are being turned into cats whenever their skin comes in contact with one! The real horror for the cat loving people within the story is not being able to touch and cuddle those adorable felines! You can tell both the author, Hawkman, and the illustrator, Mecha-Roots are both really familiar with cats and I assume love them as well. I had to laugh as I recognize my own feline loving behaviors exhibited in this book. So if you're looking for something a bit ridiculous filled with cute cats with a touch of horror this is a good escapist series.

Volume 3 and the cats dominate the world. Mankind has devolved to a society that spoofs many dystopian post apocalypse literature. The main difference is that even though the cute cats are the enemy and yet all the humans seem to still adore them and wish not to harm them. Some people have banded together to aid each other but this requires leaving their cat-free strong holds periodically to scrounge for food. Kunagi heads one of the groups that often heads out due to his feline behavior expertise. His team must head out as another team has not reported back and there is concern they have run in to trouble. This is now a world where civilizations have collapsed and humans must find a new way to live all while trying to avoid the temptation that is an adorable feline that simply wants to rub and cuddle with you.

Mad Meow Beyond Thunderdome

Not really much to talk about this volume short of a few quick things like the main crew from the earlier volumes are still alive after a bit of time skipping showing how the strange virus that turns humans (hopefully not other animals because a cat is a carnivore still) into cats. Laws and large communities are a thing of the past as cats now rule many of the large cities and wild cat like barbarian bikers hunt in the desert for kitty treasures while survivors work together to take what they can while desperately trying not to pet those vectors of cuteness waiting to turn their next human into a playmate. Something I did notice is some cats are starting to develop seemingly superhuman powers such as the cat who could meow super loud in (I believe) the last volume as more strangeness happens here too.

Sadly this feels liek a transitional manga even with the assortment of new introductions as we are shown how the cat-pocalypse plays out up to hopefully the present which will not need multiple time skips in the future. It is nice to see Hawkman (who has an insane talent when it comes to drawing realistic cats continues to draw cats he knows into the works immortalizing real world kitties though we will never meet them in real life. :)

This is such a fun, ridiculous series. Think zombie apocalypse but cats. And people loving cats so much they can’t bring themselves to hurt the cats and actually have to fight themselves to not cuddle the cats (because cuddling a cat means turning into a cat). It’s just so unserious.

Another plus for this series is that the art style evokes horror feels. Usually when you read something with a similar art style, it’s serious and heartbreaking and all the dark themes. And in this series you have this art style but with people being silly with cats. The dichotomy is fantastic.

I know an anime either came out recently or will be coming out soon. I’m watching too much other stuff right now, buts it’s definitely on my to watch list. I’m requesting the next volume as soon as I’m done writing this review.

I feel like I need to leave a review, but it's also sort of like... what do you say that isn't better covered in a review of the first book? It's more of the same, but with less context for new readers. It's still very readable by itself, though, since this volume starts with a summary of the catpocalypse: a mysterious virus has virtually wiped out humanity by causing cats to turn humans into cats, infecting them with kitty cuddles.

SO CUTE!!! :D :D :D

...so scary D: D: D: (how do you live without being able to cuddle a kitty?!)

Absolutely recommended for cat fans, and anyone tired of the same old zombie story (which this is, but much, MUCH cuter)!

I really love the cat facts a cat themed literature quotes in every volume. I don’t know why it took me this long to realize that the world in this manga series is VERY cat centered even before the catpocalypse.

In this volume, we’re introduced to the human shelters that’d pop up during such a crisis. Our protagonist’s are navigating their new positions in this world. Humans who haven’t turned into cats are called strays. I’m really enjoying the world building.

For a manga series whose main premise is cats are cute and they take over the world, this is hella interesting in its hilarity.

Picked this up at the comic store not knowing what to expect, but it being about cats made me interested. Read thru it fairly quickly and fell in love with the art style and the story. Been trying to find the others in the series to build my collection and to get deeper into the story. It was easy to pick up not having read the other books. Very good read, perfect for a relaxing day off work when you want something fun, funny, and quick. Lovely story

There was definitely a lot less going for this one here as the "terrifying" stakes were a lot less felt, the factoids about the amazingness of cats seemed to be minimalized to stuff about their hearing, and we don't even end with the main characters as instead we're left a kickass old man & his two sons in a very HAIRY situation.
Also, the dinosaurs definitely died out because of cats; everybody knows that once one sleeps on you, you're not moving anymore.

This volume had some of the fun tension that comes with an apocalypse of cats, but this felt slower. I enjoyed the introduction of the Grandma and how she’s the savior of people, and I hope with the coming volumes she gets some very much needed character development. Overall this is a fun series and I’m excited to see what volume 5 will bring.

To me Chapter 10 dragged on and honestly could’ve been condensed to a smaller montage sequence.
However, the rest of the book was just as enjoyable as the first 3 volumes.
A lot of great new concepts are introduced that add to this cat-pocalyptic world.
I really enjoyed the two supplemental chapters at the end of this volume as well.
Looking forward to reading chapter 5.

A dystopian world in which everyone that comes into direct contact with a cat turns into a cat themselves should not be this cute, but here we are.

J'aime cette série qui rassemble plusieurs éléments qui me plaisent (dessin plutôt adulte, Apocalypse, humour) pourtant ça tombe souvent à plat avec moi.

It's cute but honestly, the novelty is wearing off. The characters are really bland. There are a few cute scenes, but nothing keeps me engaged in the story.
