As always with DK books, this has loads of beautiful photography and interesting facts. Diverse natural wonders such as birds nests, gem stones, sharks teeth, coral, wasps nests, snowflakes, toadstools, snakeskin, seed pods, chrysalis, fossils, spider webs...

So much to look at, highly recommended for nature loving children and adults!

It's not terrible. I did learn some cool things. I just wish it had been more scientific and in-depth. Even if it's mainly for children, I don't think they needed to tip-toe with the language and dumb it down so much.

I really enjoyed learning about flora and fauna at the same time that I refreshed a few things from school!

Dive into colorful wonders all around us
As a little boy, for my fifth Christmas, I was given a gloriously full-color coffee table book about animal life around the world. This was before my family even owned a TV set and I treasured that book as far more vivid than anything I saw in the black-and-white set of encyclopedias we had at home. To this day, I have the book handy on my bookshelf to show my preschool grandchildren—because they love nature shows on TV that are appropriate to their age and we have given them several coffee table format books of animal life that they love exploring with us and their parents and sometimes simply sitting in a chair alone.

So, this kind of book is a multi-generational tradition in our home and my wife and I enjoy occasionally finding a new volume to pass along. We purchased this for an upcoming birthday present and, as usual, DK has published a delightful volume! If you are reading this review and you are intrigued about this book (and this series), there are several helpful things to know.

First, for some reason, DK (now a division of Penguin Random House) has organized similar books into a bit of a confusing array of imprints. This book is part of what DK calls its "DK Treasures" series, which currently has 3 volumes: this one, "Weird and Wonderful Nature" and "The Secret World of Plants." DK also has a series they call "DK Children's Anthologies," which look to us like they could be part of the same imprint. They look similar and the "Anthologies" include "Earth," "Aquatic Life," "Dinosaurs," "Universe," "Wonders of Nature" and "Animals." Because my wife and I really like this book, and we suspect it will be a big hit with our first young gift recipient soon, then we've got other titles in these imprints we can buy for future gift-giving opportunities.

Second, we also purchased a second coffee table book for the same purpose—because we are intent on encouraging reading among our grandchildren. But that second volume (which I will review here as well tomorrow) is part of a very similarly themed National Geographic book series called "The Photo Ark."

So, if you've read this far in this review, my wife and I are saying to you: If you feel moved to shop for one of these books for a future gift (or simply for your own reading fun), then we want you to know that we've widely surveyed the possible large-format nature-wonderment-photo books that we feel are appropriate for our preschool grandchildren and we highly recommend both the two DK imprints that I mentioned above and this National Geographic "Photo Ark" series. Yes, there are other publishers out there with similar books, but our eagle eyes really have come to value these three series. The books are lavishly illustrated and sturdily bound and they're the kind of great big books that we've loved (for generations) to fold open and immerse ourselves in the imagery and the sprinkling of associated facts.

Then, third, why is this particular DK book so much fun?

Well, "Nature's Treasures" (this book) is packed with more than 100 "objects" that were made by the natural world itself. Think about that concept for a moment. They're not objects created by humans. They're not artworks. They are dazzling objects made by plants, animals and the planet Earth itself. Recently, I reviewed Barbara Mahany's new "The Book of Nature," which is all about rediscovering the spiritual wonderment we can find in the natural world. That's what these photo books do as well as a motivational gateway for families to go out and see the real thing.

What does that mean? Well, you'll find full-scale pages in this book devoted to things like a cicada's case (which we enjoyed finding with our grandkids last summer), a shed snakeskin (again, it's possible to find these in the woods), a chunk of obsidian (yup, you can go find one in the right regions), a tumbleweed, a geode, a chestnut—and the list goes on and on until more than 100 large-format color photographs have been presented and explained with fascinating captions.

We hope more families find these books. Yes, we understand there are lovely full-color nature shows on TV, but we love turning off the "screens" and reading ink on paper as a family pursuit. Like my own nature book has been treasured on my shelves for more than 60 years now, we want to give books that will be treasured for a long time as well.

Empfehlung!

Received this new book by Ben Hoare yesterday and am deeply impressed. It is a substantial book at 191 pages, and really beautiful to look at and to hold. The gold page edging gives a sparkle and importance that kids will love.

Written clearly, the text doesn't talk down to the kids who are its target audience. Instead, the material is straightforward, with each object having a main section enhanced by smaller photos and illustrations giving more information. Open this book anywhere and you'll learn the basic facts about an object enhanced by interesting subtexts. For example, who knew that sea shells are made from the same material as natural chalk?

All of this information could have come across as dry or pedantic, but not at all. As soon as you open the pages you'll see that the organization of the material and bright pictures and illustrations tempt you to explore. This would be a favorite book for children curious about the natural world and would certainly spark the interest of any budding naturalist.

The book design is a delight, from the orange end papers to the brilliant photos and page layout. Illustrator Kaley McKean has provided appealing images to complement the text and provide an organic flow that keeps you reading, whatever your age. I was intrigued enough to look up her website, where I realized I was familiar with her unique style from Aquila children's magazine, where her distinct and amazing images are often featured.

This is a book that children will love and parents will find themselves reading for their own pleasure. I know I will enjoy sharing it with the children in my life.

Beautiful, informative and intriguing, this book is a must read for anyone who loves nature, animals, gems, plants or just learning new things.

Divided up into several sections: Animals, Plants Fungi and Algae, Minerals and Rocks and Made By Nature this book explore many varied topics in an in-depth way. Each item has a two page spread devoted to it, with a closeup illustration of the item itself, either drawn or a photograph, text and then many smaller items that highlight the major one. The illustrations are either hand drawn and colored, or photos of the objects.

Some of the interesting things I learned from this book are that butterfly wings are actually scales, puffins change their beaks depending on the season and the egg sacs of various species of sharks used to be called mermaid purses due to their unusual design.

The topics flow cohesively one to the next. A good example, from the Animals section is Elephant Tooth, Teeth, Shark Teeth. Those were how the topics appeared in the book. Similar items are grouped together. The book also contains a glossary and index.

- DK edícia so zlatými stranami
- encyklopédia
- pre deti 6+
- zaujímavosti o výtvoroch prírody

Tak a máme tu ďalšiu náučnú nádheru zo sveta prírody a jej výtvorov. Táto encyklopédia nadupaná zaujímavými poznatkami sa venuje primárne kategóriám - živočíchy, rastliny, huby, horniny a minerály.

Život má neskutočne veľa podôb. Jemný no odolný skelet listov, pozoruhodné vajíčka, jedinečné snehové vločky, magické vtáčie perie a nadherná morská perla.

Nature's Treasures by Ben Hoare demonstrates the beauty and wonders nature holds. Although written for young audiences, Hoare's book teaches new and intriguing information that I guarantee anyone would enjoy reading. One fascinating fact I enjoyed learning about was the variations of skeletal structure in different animals. For instance, horses and zebras have leg joints that lock together, allowing them to sleep standing up, and tortoise shell bones consist of thick plates that provide protection against predators. Another engaging fact that especially caught my attention was how extraordinary butterfly wings are; they can detect light and temperature with tiny sensors and contain thousands of scales, each the thickness of a human hair. I rate Nature's Treasures a solid five out of five stars and recommend it to anyone who desires curiosity.

Beautiful pictures in rich detail, and interesting descriptions in yet another book I got for my kids but ended up reading myself lol. It’s the perfect book to pickup when you have a few minutes and want to spend it looking at something beautiful or learning something you thought you already knew. The kids also enjoyed it.

A guide to the wonders of the natural world.

Wow. What a book. Nature’s Treasures is absolutely amazing.

Firstly I must comment on the physical production of Nature’s Treasures. As one would expect from a DK book, it is top quality with a beautifully foiled cover that is so solid and robust the book will endure years of handling and reading. Add in the gold edges and Nature’s Treasures feels completely sumptuous. The orange endpapers are beautifully designed and the illustrations by Kaley McKean are glorious. As well as those illustrations, there are also stunning photographs throughout to exemplify the text. In addition, not only does the white space enhance the images, but it means that the writing is totally accessible to independent young readers, being brief whilst containing incredible information so that even the most reluctant young reader can access the text.

Nature’s Treasures is divided into sections covering animals, plants, fungi and algae, minerals and rocks, and items made by nature, with sensible advice for young nature spotters at the beginning and a useful glossary and index covering everything from aardvark to zinc at the back. Every section is packed with information. Indeed, whilst Nature’s Treasures would make a brilliant gift for individual children, it would also enhance any KS2 classroom because there are so many other references within its pages such as the etymology of fulgurite so that young minds can be inspired to learn more beyond the pages of the book.

There’s so much to discover within the pages of this book that I cannot praise Nature’s Treasures highly enough. It is fantastic and would make a wonderful gift. Buy it!

“The variety of life is endless. The more time we spend looking at the world around us, the more we will notice and the more we will learn.”

DK Books has this uncanny ability to present nature and science in such a beautiful, treasured, way.

I spent the morning reading THIS. I gaped at the incredible process of building a bird’s egg, which comes in all shapes and colours (made up only of two pigments : a red-brown and a green).

The “mermaid’s purse” in old stories is none other than the shark’s egg case, with stiff threads at the edges to secure it on the sea bed, as well as tiny holes for oxygen to reach the baby.

I never knew how sea urchins see and breathe, but now I do! Also, they’ve been around for 540 million years 😙

Rafflesia has a spot in this book! It “stinks like a dead animal and releases runny, snot-like pollen.” (The tiny flies like that 🙉)

A beautiful spread per topic. I could go on all day. SIGH. I’ve done a flip-through of the book, just tap on my #igreels ❤️ @hweezbooks
