This was a disgustingly horrible read. I didn’t even make it past chapter 4 because no, just no. This was a story about a 40 year old man preying on a 20 year old girl. A 40 year old man who couldn’t keep it in his pants for one night so he decided to manipulate the child into sleeping with him. Did she actually, don’t know, don’t care. And a 20 year old too naive to be on her own. The dialogue between them was disgusting because she was too juvenile and he was too conniving. From page one it was dumb, but I decided to give it a chance. I shouldn’t have.
Another Mafia read and as of now, no plans to slow down. Jamila Jasper books will always be entertaining if nothing else! Idk how she comes up with these ideas. John and Alexis story started of dark and possessive but grew to be very sweet. The title of this book makes it seem like it will be more gruesome but I promise there’s plenty of swoony moments.
I enjoyed this even though the good girl made a gangster a better person trope has been done to death & it's predictable. I still really like this. I love that John had nuance & depth. Alexis being so worried about Gabe was so ridiculous it was laughable. The idea that you don't want harm to come to a person that harmed is so silly. Her concern for Gabe was outright dumb & not realistic. That's one of those goofy things that came from mainstream entertainment to prove what a good person it. She should have been relieved he was gone & moved on like a rational person would. That didn't prove that she's a good person but rather an idiot. It almost takes you out the book because it's so eye rolling inducing. Give me a break. I'm fascinated that bw authors often have their bw characters rely on the police to help or save them. We know many don't feel that way for good reason so y'all can stop pretending that's a thing. Its funny because that is something you read in way more interracial books than black love books. You have john KNOWING he could get rid of her & no one would care because she's black but Alexis a bw is talking about going to the cops because apparently she don't know that she don't matter to them. He gets this but she doesn't? Be serious.
While running away from her boyfriend's best friend (who attempted to rape her), college student Alexis jumps out of the frying pan straight into the fire. She witnesses John, a mob boss, murdering his best friends son. She ends up being kidnapped by John and the roller coaster ride goes crazy from there. It's kinda a "Beauty and the Beast" type of love story.
Jamila is a talented storyteller and I loved every book she has written. I only have a couple of issues with most the main characters being dark skinned (can't caramel skinned girls have a chance at romance?) and pregnancy is almost always a given. I'd like to see a couple have a relationship/marriage without kids... not everyone wants or has them. I'd like to see a HEA with the couple riding off into the sunset with a dog or two.
My minor annoyances aside, I definitely recommend this book (and all other J.J. books), and can guarantee you won't be bored with it.,
People were hating on this book saying that oh it’s this old white man taking advantage of a college student and and when I read the book it was that but it was really interesting. Basically alexis saw John committing a murder after she was almost raped by her boyfriend’s friend gabe and John took her and said that we have to have sex and keep having sex in order for me to know that I can trust you which was crazy for him to say, but this is a fictional book and after that like they basically form like some sort of relationship that was really cute, but alexis and her friend Chloe end up getting kidnapped by Sammy, which is John’s cousin and he’s actually really insane so literally every single night they have to lock the door because he’s like going crazy because the reason he kidnapped them was because John had killed his son and Rico. eventually, when John finds them he saves them and he gets alexis pregnant. That’s how the book ended. It was really really nice. I enjoyed it.

Alexis is having a really bad night. First her bone head boyfriend is too busy for her. Then his roommate gets too friendly with her in the bed. When she runs away she sees someone murdered. Tough night. John sees the scared, beautiful goddess and he knows he can never let her go. His life is deadly being the son of the boss of a mafia family, but he sees Alexis and sees a future. Can Alexis bad night turn to a lasting love. It’s a tad violent if you aren’t ready for it. LOVE the love scenes. Spicy. I enjoyed this read.
The drama was great in this book but it was really hard to get past the age gap. It felt predatory. There were some minor editing issues but Jamila definitely has a way with words. She is a great writer which is how I was able to finish this book so quickly, but I feel like I powered through this book. The 3rd book may not be for me, it looks like it will be another age gap trope. I give it 2 stars because some of the sub plots didn’t make sense, like what was Sam’s plan with the girls? Were Chloe and Cameron sleeping together behind Alexis’s back? This book was okay.

Hmm… well, first off this is a fetish type guilty pleasure book. One in which a character’s blackness is rather fetishized, but not necessarily in a bad way (if that’s possible.). Like a prison romance… you know the type. But for me, it was too much. I couldn’t enjoy what was kind of good about the book because the raw fetish type dialogue kept taking me out of the story. I like when a fellow black woman is appreciated, but I don’t like when it sounds like porn.
But this story was everything, but the age gap was very apparent annoyingly so. But other than that love the story. The beginning was cringe worthy when it came to the initial relation act. I think I'm going to skip right over Sammy's story because 1. She 🔞 2. She pregnant with his grand baby 3. Not sure if im into the stepdad/granddaddy to my unborn "love story"
I’ve read the family tree so far. Loved the books. This is book two of the three book series featuring the Long Island branch of the family. I liked Luca and Althea’s story, but John and Alexis…..man. I LOVED it! John is a mess, but Alexis and her love, which he has to really work to earn, are awesome. I’m looking forward to Sammy’s story.
Alexis loves her man and he loves her but they don't know it.The Butcher falls for a nerd and saves her life.He falls in love with a beautiful blk woman.something he said he would never do.Italian men don't fall for blk women.Well Lucky the brother does now the Butcher is in love. This is a must read.
The age gap was not good. He was a pervert abusing her by holding her and making her suck his penis. She was stupid and naive. And I didn't like all the black women nipple, ass and pussy talk, like were properly to be used any kind of way sounds like a form of slavery talk. At least Althea had common sense in book 1.
This book was good as all the other ones and very exciting and you can’t wait to find out what’s gonna happen next and it’s kind of funny and it’s weird and makes you mad. Makes you happy makes you sad. Makes you wanna cry. What is a good book and I think anybody would enjoy it if they really step down and read it
The age gap felt a bit predatory and this book fetishized black women. The ending also left me with questions like why she never confronted Chloe. The story was a bit all over with no clear beginning and end. Also, this book needs a new cover. That was not what it looked like when I downloaded it, but now that I’ve seen this version, I have strong feelings about it😵💫
This one was better than the first one. So far, this series is not as good as the Italian, Greek, and Irish ones. I am looking forward to the third one because of how crazy Sammy is, but these books are short, so it should only take half a day to read. However, I keep losing interest, and the action is cut to a minimum.
This story was definitely interesting and full of surprises from beginning to end. I actually read this story first and it falls in line with Ms. Jasper's style which pushes your limits. I will be reading the others too.
I like this series, the characters and the storyline. However, I feel there are unanswered questions throughout the books. I want to see how it ends and plan to read the next book in the series.
I can't really say how much this book was so unbelievable. Cause every thing would be spoilers. But needless to say I think I'm done with this series.... Sorry
