Charlotte Sapori has led a wonderful life, safely tucked in the bosom of her family. Her mother, Irene Adler, is a renowned opera singer, while her father, Lucca Sapori, does important government work that frequently takes him away from them. Charlotte is close to her older brother, Nicco, and they are both doted on by their parents. All is well until her mother receives an unexpected diagnosis which shakes the family to its core.
Knowing herself to be dying, Adler confesses to Charlotte things that have long been kept from her, telling her to find and read her diary. A distressed Lucca Sapori tells his daughter to read his as well. And by the way, Lucca Sapori is not his real name. In fact, she may have heard of him—he is actually the world-famous detective, Sherlock Holmes.
Charlotte finds both diaries and plunges into the hidden world of Irene Adler and Sherlock Holmes as she discovers what brought them together, and how they managed to stay together for thirty years despite having to battle the odds.
KD Sherrinford was born and raised in Preston, Lancashire, and now resides on The Fylde Coast with her husband John, and their four children. An avid reader from an early age, KD was fascinated by the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie, she read the entire Doyle Canon by the time she was 13.
A talented pianist, KD played piano from age six, the music of some of her favourite composers, Beethoven, Schubert, Stephen Foster, and Richard Wagner, all strongly feature in her novel.
KD had a varied early career, working with horses and racing greyhounds, she and her husband won the Blackpool Greyhound Derby in 1987 with Scottie.
Then to mix things up KD joined Countrywide, where she was employed for over 20 years and became a Fellow of The National Association of Estate Agents.
Retirement finally gave KD the opportunity to follow her dreams and start work on her first novel. She gained inspiration to write” Song for Someone” from her daughter Katie, after a visit to the Sherlock Holmes museum on Baker Street in 2019. It had always been a passion to write about Irene Adler, she is such an iconic character, and KD wanted to give her a voice.
KD recently completed her second book in the Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler mystery series, “Christmas at The Saporis”, and is currently working on the third.
This is the first book I have read by this author, and I can honestly say I loved every page. The story grabs you from the moment you begin reading the first paragraph, it is then you’ll quickly realise that this is not your typical crime novel.
The genius of Sherlock Holmes meets the celebrated opera singer, Irene Adler. It is a story of danger, intrigue, deception, denial, and a secret longing, but above all it is an engrossing love affair to rival the most ardent of stories told through history.
Beautifully written in a dialogue period-specific was an absolute joy to read. The well-defined characters, coupled with the visual imagery, added to the authenticity of the period.
Loved it. A beautiful, emotional story that tugged at my heartstrings. Highly recommended.
Discoveries made about her parents from both their journals was shocking to Charlotte to say the least. This character starts and ends the story and adds a different perspective to the well known and loved Sherlock Holmes mysteries. After Irene's husband was murdered, she teamed up with Sherlock Holmes and between them not only did they crack the case but their personal relationship blossomed. A romantic and captivating tale of how Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler found love, despite numerous challenges they faced both inside and outside of the relationship. The style of writing takes you back to the Victorian era and tells of the massive secret both had to keep for the safety of themselves and their children. Each chapter builds this intreging story revealing betrayal, perseverance and above all the pure love of two people. The plot is exceptionally well written, with in-depth descriptions which catapult you and your imagination right into the heart of this book. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommended. Good job!
The attention to detail, even down to the approximate number of bees in a bee-hive, places and dates, is truly amazing, but never boring. It helps to create the minor characters in the reader’s own mind. The inclusion of the bee-hives at the farmhouse Le Sole is a nice touch, as Holmes at a late age, was forced into a bee-keeping retirement by Conan Doyle. The introduction of the famous conductor, Arturo Toscanini and his various conversations is very pleasing. It is clear that the author has a real interest in opera, various musical references and the clever use of Paganini, add to the uniqueness of the story. The author has an interest in horses and weaves into her story, Irene’s first husband, Godfrey’s alibi, by being at Newmarket for the Bunbury Cup and an incident at Le Sole in Fiesole, although this is not expanded upon. The tension and expectancy of a relationship between Adler and Holmes starts to build up from chapter 12. While staying as a married couple in Fiesole, Tuscany, the early stages of their relationship was both humorous and sadly dramatic, as Irene’s feelings made such a vivid impression on the reader, anticipating that further developments are to come and they do. The two experience episodes of joy to moments of sadness, whether as friends or lovers, which adds to the tension and individuality of both characters. Holmes is such a complex person and Adler experiences the many facets of his character through a series of brilliantly written linking episodes. The ending, full of many twists and turns, brings all the loose ends together, stands comparison to many well established authors, who write in a similar vein. At various places throughout the book, when describing something to add to the period authenticity of the story, the Author uses a dated non- familiar word in place of a familiar word, for example a modiste for a fashionable dressmaker. There is always the opportunity in future novels to develop and expand stories on their relationships with Dr Watson, Mycroft Holmes, Mrs Hudson and Inspector Lestrade. There is also the potential to ‘flesh out’ the missing four years of their relationship. Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie better watch out as we have here, an author that conveys all of their characteristics with an element of romance. A very enjoyable first novel and if the rest of the series is as good as ‘Song for Someone’ the author will only add to her following. The way it is written could be adapted into a television series, in a similar manor to that of the popular ‘Murdoch Mysteries’. A thoroughly enjoyable read and highly recommended - WELL DONE.
Song For Someone is the first book in Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler Mysteries. Being a great fan of all the Sherlock Holmes stories, I discovered after reading this book that to enjoy a Sherlock Holmes story, it is not necessary that all stories should be set through “221B Baker Street.” No doubt KD Sherrinford has brought the Victorian London era back in front of the reader’s eyes through this beautiful story.
The story mainly revolves between Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adle. Irene Adler has appeared only once in Doyle's stories, A Scandal in Bohemia. It was surprising to see the way KD Sherrinford has beautifully transitioned both the characters and upgraded their relationship to the next level. Charlotte Sapori is the daughter of Irene Adler and Lucca Sapori. While Irene is a famous opera singer, Lucca works with the government where his job keeps him away from the family most of the time. Irene has been diagnosed with a life-threatening situation; she gives a diary to Charlotte and confesses to her the long-kept secrets. At the same time, Lucca gives her his diary and asks her to read both. The diary explains in detail the lives of Irene Adler and Lucca Sapori and Charlotte discovers that his father’s original name is not Luca and he is a famous detective Sherlock Holmes.
I really appreciate the way the story has matured from the incidents that were described in A Scandal in Bohemia. Sherlock has been approached by an anonymous masked client who turns out to be Wilhelm, the great Duke and hereditary King of Bohemia himself. He appeals for help in the redemption of a specific object from the hands of Irene Adler, his former liaison, on which they had failed in many attempts.
I appreciate KD Sherrinford's idea of constructing the narrative from a different point of view. Unlike other stories where you see Sherlock be totally weird, he has been expressed differently with a charismatic personality! He's much different in this when compared with the way he appears in the other stories. Similarly, Irene Adler is brilliant, and you will be seeing more of her throughout the story.
Song For Someone is not a typical book on Sherlock Holmes's adventures, but it is a way different and enjoyable read. I felt like I was able to understand Sherlock much better through the narrative of KD Sherrinford. She has been passionate throughout in expressing her thought in a unique way. I am sure every reader will enjoy reading Song for Someone and am very eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this tale of romance and intrigue involving Sherlock Holmes and a love interest. The author does a great job developing her characters and rich scenery delving the reader into that time in history. It's an interesting take on the possibility of the great sleuth finding a love interest who originally was only to be another client.
When Charlotte Sapori’s mother, the renowned opera singer Irene Adler, is diagnosed with a serious illness, she decides the time is right to give both her diary and that of her husband Lucca Sapori, to their daughter Charlotte. Knowing that she hasn’t got long to live, Irene tells Charlotte to read them both after she passes away.
It’s then that we are plunged into the mysterious worlds of both Irene and Sherlock Holmes (who is of course Lucca Sapori) and the book is divided into chapters from both points of view. But first we must go back even further to when the couple first ‘met’ briefly. The prologue – A Very Bohemian Scandal – is the first introduction to both of them, but Holmes was in disguise. Years later Irene confesses that she knew who he was at the time, something which fascinates him – she must be a remarkable woman to have rumbled one of his famous disguises.
Seven years later Irene is being pursued by the man who murdered her husband in London. She saw him clearly, so she has escaped to Milan, where she had previously performed at La Scala for many years. But she is not safe. It is here that she meets Holmes again, who swears to protect her, so they pretend to be husband and wife and hide out with Sherlock’s friends on their farm. They initially detest each other and argue constantly, but in the words of Queen Gertrude from Shakespeare’s Hamlet ‘the lady doth protest too much, methinks’, and their hatred soon turns into admiration and finally, love.
I have to say at this point that I still can’t quite visualise Holmes (in any guise from Basil Rathbone and Peter Cushing to Jeremy Brett and Benedict Cumberbatch) as a lover, a husband and a father. He is often portrayed as being direct to the point of rudeness, unable to sustain relationships with women, and uncomfortable in social situations, to the point of exhibiting many of the signs of Asperger’s. This includes his high IQ but EQ (Emotional Quotient) of almost zero.
The author, incidentally, is a talented pianist, having learnt the piano from age six, playing the music of some of her favourite composers, Beethoven, Schubert, Stephen Foster, and Richard Wagner, who all strongly feature in her novels. I have a feeling that Sherrinford is a ‘nom de plume’, supposedly being the name Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had originally considered for his great detective before finally settling on Sherlock. It is also suggested that Sherrinford Holmes would be a third brother, but I digress.
Song For Someone is an entertaining romp through the imagined world of our favourite detective, seen through the eyes of Irene Adler, as well as through Sherlock himself. I can see that the author has done a huge amount of research to stay faithful to the spirit of the characters, while allowing Sherlock to fall in love and become more human and empathic (well up to a point anyway). I hope we see this on TV very soon – it would make a great series.
Many thanks to @zooloo2008 for inviting me to be part of this blog tour.
I had already read this book some time ago, but was delighted to be given the opportunity of listening to the audiobook. As I noted before, this is an interesting, well-turned story, rich in background detail and full of well-rounded characters. The use of diary entries as well as Charlotte’s POV chapters keeps the story fresh and opens up intriguing trains of thought. I particularly enjoyed the references to real life people, such as Agatha Christie, and I though the research into the period was exceptional. The attention to clothes of the period and the minutiae of everyday life lifted the story above the norm. An enjoyable story and highly recommended.
This is the first book in a new and exciting series, Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler mysteries.
It's no secret that I'm a huge Sherlock fan and having watched everything possible over many years, it was brilliant to be diving back into this world.
Here, we're quite a few years on from the young Sherlock days. Irene, now married to Lucca and living with her 2 children, Charlotte and Nicco. When Irene becomes unwell, both she and Lucca start to reminisce about the past and advise young Charlotte to read their diaries, where she learns that life as she knew it, was not quite as it seems.
I loved that the writing style really felt like reading the Sherlock books of old. The language and narrative fitting the era perfectly. Reading chapters from different pov's allowed us into all the minds of the main characters and gave a more rounded view of the situation including everyone's thoughts, feelings and emotions.
I loved the idea of this being set many years later but looking back on how Sherlock/Lucca and Irene met and became a couple, how their relationship developed and they married but also the explanation of why Sherlock chose to become Lucca.
Irene has always been a bit of a mystery to us in the last so it was lovely getting to know her as a character in this book, but also meeting Charlotte and Nicco too.
I won't give any spoilers but the outcome was so sad and I really felt for the family.
A brilliant read and I can't wait to see how this is taken forward in the next two books that I have to review over the next few weeks.

Songs for someone is book one in the Sherlock Holmes & Irene Adler series by K.D Sherrinford. This is the first book that I have read by the author and it definitely won't be the last. I was hooked from the very first page. Sherlock Holmes meets the Opera singer, Irene Alder. They meet a few times over the years before starting a relationship. The author is a brilliant writer and I kept reading until the end. A very enjoyable read that I highly recommend. I can't wait to read more by the author. 💖 Thank you to the author, K.D Sherrinford and @zooloobooktours for my copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this read, it is my first by this author but it certainly wont be my last. I loved it. It was well written with a compelling story line and well developed characters, I love how Sherlock and Irene Adler were depicted in this book, I was so taken by the and I was rooting for them all the way through. Comprising of vivid descriptions and rich imagery I was transported back to the period and I wanted to reach through the pages and be there myself. Fantastic
For the first in this series I found the story to flow easily and was enjoyable. Although my knowledge of Sherlock Holmes comes from the BBC series rather than the classic novels I still found myself able to enjoy this one as I do enjoy history and the time period in which this novel is set.
I'd say this is a definite read for a Sherlock Holmes fan and it's an interesting approach to a well known character.
Song For Someone by KD Sherrinford offers a compelling exploration of love, secrets, and familial connections. While it has its moments of brilliance, the novel manages to create an emotionally engaging experience despite some minor pacing issues.
The premise of unraveling the hidden lives of Irene Adler and Sherlock Holmes through their diaries provides an intriguing backdrop for the story. As Charlotte Sapori uncovers long-kept family secrets, the narrative dives into the complex web of relationships that define her family’s history. This journey of discovery keeps the reader invested and emotionally connected to the characters.
Sherrinford adeptly portrays the dynamics of family life, portraying the tender bond between Charlotte and her parents with authenticity. The heartfelt exploration of Irene Adler’s life as an opera singer and Sherlock Holmes’ detective work adds depth to their iconic personas, making them feel relatable and human.
While Song For Someone is emotionally resonant, there are occasional pacing issues that impact the overall flow of the story. Some plot developments could have been smoother and more tightly woven to enhance the reading experience.
The novel excels in its ability to evoke empathy and genuine emotional investment in the characters’ lives. The poignant moments of tenderness and revelation create a melodic harmony that tugs at the heartstrings.
Song For Someone by KD Sherrinford is a melodious journey into the hidden world of beloved literary figures. The emotionally engaging portrayal of family bonds and the exploration of secret lives make it a worthwhile read. While some pacing issues may be present, the novel succeeds in crafting an evocative tale of love, revelations, and connections that will resonate with readers who appreciate heartfelt family dramas
I loved that the book started with how Irene Adler and Sherlock Holmes met, it took me in from the first page. The introduction to the book Irene left for her children really touched me and I may write something similar when my time will come. 😢 There are several passages that literally moved me to tears, they are written beautifully and insightful of peoples feelings.
The rest of the book reads like many of the Sherlock Holmes books I've read and the whole book is well-written. It is not fast-paced with lots of action, but filled with warmth of feeling and depth of character and several POV's.
The ending swept me with it and I couldn't put the book down, I had to know how it ended! All in all I loved reading it and I would love to read the next books in the series!

Song For Someone : Sherlock Holmes And Irene Adler #1. By KD Sherrinford.
My review.
Love is the aria of the soul.
I have been a fan of Sherlock Holmes for as long as I can remember and have a special place for him in my heart, so am always slightly concerned when I see him appear outside the confinds of Doyle I needed not have worried this is a fantastic read. With her mother's death, it is revealed to her that her father is indeed the legendary and celebrated detective Sherlock Holmes. As she begins to read the diaries of both her mother and father a fantastic tale of of heartbreak, betrayal, secrets and intrigue are laid bare, but over all this a story of the love of two people and the perseverance and tenacity of two people destined to be together despite the dangers that conspire against them.
The Victorian era literally seems to jump off the page with descriptions that leave you believing you have just visited. The prose is by turns lyrical and magical. The plot is sharp and crisp with more than a touch of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle about it. Irene Adler is captivating and strong both a woman of the times and also far ahead. Her story from Scandal in Bohemia is expanded and given life in the most beautiful of ways. All in all this is a fantastic read and I look forward to continuing the series, the game is as they say afoot!
With Charlotte’s mum on her deathbed she is encouraged to read her journals. There she is transported to the past where she learns the startling identity of both her mother and father. I hope it’s not to much of a spoiler to say it’s Sherlock Holmes (Being about the detective himself I would have been surprised if it wasn’t) She discovers the twists and turns of the dramatic love affair that brought her parents together. And the danger too. When it is believed that someone is out to kill Irene it is up to Sherlock to protect her and they go undercover as man and wife. But soon old enemies of Holmes come out to play and ruin it all in a dramatic showdown. Through all this though a passion is ignited between Adler and Holmes but despite them being in love out side forces are determined to see them apart. Will they overcome the obstacles? Well, you will have to read to find out. This is a fun and imaginative take on the old story of Sherlock Holmes. If you’re into your Sherlock Holmes history then you might find the timing of their relationship interesting. I also found that this stayed faithful to Holmes canon as this book could be seen as a sequel of sorts of a short story written by Arthur Conan Doyle. I believe he would be very proud of this retelling. I enjoyed it immensely and I will definitely be reading more from this author.
This is an elegant and captivating story, taking us into the world of Sherlock Holmes through the narrative of Charlotte Sapori a young woman on the cusp of becoming a doctor.
The writing is strong and accomplished, balancing evocative prose with an engaging narrative that unravels deep and well-kept family secrets. From Holmes to the charming and renowned Irene Adler every character has the complexity readers would expect from this legendary homage. Charley’s voice adds a fresh perspective to the Sherlock Holmes legacy. Her emotional quest for answers through story-revealing journals brings life to the book
This novel would be a perfect candidate for a comparative paper alongside Arthur Conan Doyle’s original works. Song for Someone builds on the Holmes books with insight into his personal life, particularly through his relationships. It offers rich material for academic analysis. The contrast between Holmes' cold persona and the warmth of family life creates fascinating layers of complexity. The writing is sublime, the description and tone beautiful and the characters vivid and real.
I’d ask if KD Sherrinford could be Conan Doyle incarnate if not for the more gentle, and modern style. I prefer this to any of the books by the great author, and very much look forward to the next one in the series. Beautiful and captivating, I loved it. Recommended.
I have to say Song For Someone is a beautifully written and emotional book 1 in the KD's Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler mystery series. There is three POV's Charlotte Sapori, Irene Sapori and Lucca Sapori.
Famous opera singer Irene Adler married to the world-famous detective Sherlock Holmes reunited after being forced apart and remarrying under the assumed name of Sapori to keep the family safe from the threat of the dangerous adversaries of Sherlock Holmes, they bore two children Nicco and Charlotte.
When Irene receives a diagnosis of a serious illness and dying she confesses of many secrets kept from her for the safety of the family.
I was totally captivated by this brilliant and beautifully written book, so emotional, I doubt there will be many dry eyes from the first pages onwards.
KD Sherrinford's attention to historical detail is second to none, the incredible description of the settings, characters and dress induced visions of actually being there.
I was completely engrossed in and addicted to this book as I was in all the books by KD.
This is a thrilling mystery novel that takes readers on a captivating journey through the world of Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler.
Sherrinford's writing is engaging and atmospheric, drawing readers into the world of Victorian London and the intricate web of clues and red herrings that make up the mystery.
The characters are well-developed and believable, with Holmes and Adler's chemistry adding an extra layer of intrigue to the story.
One of the book's strongest points is its attention to detail. Sherrinford clearly did their research, and the historical accuracy and period-specific details add depth and richness to the story. The book also explores themes of love, loss, and loyalty, making it more than just a typical detective novel.
The plot is well-crafted and keeps readers on the edge of their seats until the very end. The pacing is excellent, with just the right amount of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing.
The book also includes several subplots that add to the overall complexity of the story without detracting from the main mystery. It is an excellent start to the "Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler Mysteries" series, and I look forward to reading more from this talented author.
Overall a well-written and enjoyable mystery novel that will appeal to fans of Sherlock Holmes, Irene Adler, and historical fiction.
I love reading novels about the Victorian era, and so this book was right up my street. The author has clearly done her research well with detailed knowledge of England, Italy, and the opera world. When renowned opera singer Irene Adler knows she is dying, she urges her daughter, Charlotte Sapori, to read her diaries to discover things that have long been kept from her. Charlotte’s father, Lucca Sapori, tells his daughter to also read his diaries and confesses that he is, in fact, the world-famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. What an intriguing plot for a story! I thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue between Holmes and Adler as they slowly fell in love. These two are strong characters, and the novel is beautifully written. Strongly recommended.
Since the character of Sherlock Holmes entered the public domain (and before) there have been many novels and stories featuring the great detective (to various degrees of success). Song for Someone is definitely a success. With expertly crafted prose which feels like it came from the time the book is set, the author works within the existing Sherlock Holmes canon, and the perimeters of Sherlock Holmes the character, to create a believable, relatable, and very interesting character arc that feels like its adding another layer to the iconic character rather than detract from it. If you're a Sherlock Holmes fan who is interested to see how the character could be developed further, I strongly recommend you start with Song for Someone.
Charlotte Sapori has a famous mum, Irene Sadler, the opera singer. Her father, Lucca Sapori is often away from home due to his work for the government. Charlotte and her brother, Nicco are close.
When Irene suffers from ill health and finds out she is dying, she asks her daughter to read her diaries, her father also wants her to read his.
Lucca is really Sherlock Holmes, and Charlotte reads all about her parents and their relationship.
This is an enjoyable and entertaining story about Sherlock Holmes and Irene Sadler. I enjoyed seeing their romance blossom, which wasn’t easy as Holmes seemed to be determined to stay single.
In a Song for Someone we are introduced to two worlds and two time periods. Often a difficult way to weave a smooth telling of a storyline but this one is well-done. Of course, if you are a Sherlock Holmes fan you’ll enjoy the mystery, danger, and intrigue. But if you enjoy the beauty of music, art, opera, Tuscany, I could go on, you will also enjoy this book. There are so many lovely details. It’s a story of family. Friends. Antagonistic relationships that surprisingly become amorous. Heartache and triumphant. I highly recommend it if you enjoy settling into a time and place and being immersed in story.
Jon Oshiro The Sign of Holmes- Reviews Song for Someone 24th of May 2023
I had not read any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes books until I read Song for Someone by KD Sherrinford ( my first e-book) And while investigating mysteries from the viewpoint of Dr Watson intrigues readers...seeing how Holmes is able to solve a mystery precisely, Sherrinford has essentially used a magnifying glass as we look at Holmes and Adler...investigating the mysteries of the heart. Using multiple narratives, we see and begin to understand the character from each one's perspective. The emotions they wrestle with and the appreciation and acceptance that love allows us to see. We are all different...and without understanding...without love, we remain different. Investigate Song for Someone. Highly recommend an endearing look at an enduring love..genius!.
Intriguing read! Irene Adler is a famous opera singer. Lucca Sapori is a government worker who works away a lot. Charlotte Sapori is the loving daughter of this intriguing couple. When Charlotte’s mother is told she is dying she asks her daughter to read her diaries as does her father Lucca and here we are taken into the world of the renowned famous detective Sherlock Homes along with Irene Adler. Song For Someone is a beautifully written mystery story filled with love, suspense and danger. A gripping read for all the mystery and Sherlock Homes lovers out there.
