Roxy Lim is now an inked member of the Seattle Slayers, tasked with enforcing the Oceanic Pact in a city teeming with deadly shifters, devious vampires, and scheming fae.
I made it into the Slayers by the skin of my teeth and now I just need to figure out a plan to ship some Cure back to my mom. Cure doesn’t survive the Crossing through the Veil without the right vessel. But earning my stripes with the Slayers should get me just the vessel I need to do it.
Things at the Dojo were going great. The head of the Dojo himself has taken an interest in my training. I got my ink and was riding high when my shifter landlady Mrs. Chu goes missing in the Wilds. Faced with the decision to either carry out my duties with Slayers or to bail to the Wilds to find the one person in Seattle who has taken care of me like family, it’s no choice at all.
What I thought would be a simple errand lands me in a full scale vampire war between the Night Court and a rogue vampire named O’Malley. Shifters are dying and now I can’t leave and the Slayers won’t help.
All I’ve got to save Mrs. Chu and the rest of the shifters is my hammers, a sharp knife, and my growing Breaker magic. I’ll use everything I’ve got but will it be enough to stop O’Malley’s war?
Join Seattle Slayer Roxy Lim on her wildest mission yet as she battles through the largest peril of vampires she's ever come across and one deadly rogue leader who wants to add Roxy to his team.
Ken Bebelle has been an avid reader of fantasy, science fiction, and comic books his entire life. His first foray into writing was in the eighth grade with a sword and sorcery fantasy story stored on a 5.25” floppy disk.
Ken and his co-author, Julia Vee, recently finished Ebony Gate, an Asian-inspired contemporary fantasy set in the Pacific Rim. Ebony Gate was acquired by Claire Eddy at TOR and will debut in summer 2023 as the first in a trilogy. Ken and Julia have also self-published another series, Seattle Slayers, an urban fantasy set in a post-apocalyptic Seattle. In his spare time, Ken is married, has two grown children, ponders the cyberpunk novel that he has yet to write, and tries to grow tomatoes in his meager backyard.
Roxy’s back with even more adventures through Seattle and the Veil!
Book two feeds us a little more information on the Tarim and crystals, Roxy’s dad, and the goings-on in the Veil. Roxy has to make the tough decision whether to follow her instinct or follow the strict rules of the Slayers, even if it puts innocents at risk. She’s starting to learn that everything may not be as righteous, or cut and dry, as it seems!
Book two ends with a massive “oh crap - what now?” And I’m so excited to see where the authors take book three. I dearly hope all my questions are answered regarding the Slayers, O’Malley, the Tarim, Roxy’s dad, and Tyee because I am DYING with them unanswered
This was a great next entry that expands the world of the Twilight, raises the stakes, and grows the character all at once: the perfect trifecta for the next book in a series! Roxy is such a great character and in this book, we really come to know her heart and why we want to keep rooting for her. I read this pretty much in one sitting on the plane - unputdownable and page-turning!
Another fun romp through the veil! There are so many cool things in this book that I hope the authors will explore in more detail, such as the Tarim, the Black Wait and the Moon and Mist vampires. Can't wait for the next book!
She makes it into the Slayers! Gets her ink! Only unlike the other initiates, she gets a second tattoo. After that night her world ends up becoming hell in a hand basket. I’m looking forward to reading book 3 and find out what becomes of her and her friends.
There are so many surprises as this story goes on. Roxy is a very interesting character and a strong voice. I'm quickly reading these books and wondering how things will turn out.
Another all-nighter that pulled me in from the first words
Oh man, what a ride! Filled with action right from the beginning, it was almost impossible to put this book down for silly things like sleeping. And working.
Roxy finds even more mayhem this time as she transitions to a fully inked Slayer. But that credo they learned — Slayers fight together — doesn’t seem to apply in all cases like she was led to believe. In a situation where she needed to help a friend, she was told to stand down by Slayer leadership. But Roxy has followed her heart and her gut her whole life. Why change now?
If you liked book 1, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this installment as well. Lots of action, a kick-butt but flawed main female lead, found family, and all the vampires, shifters, and other supernatural characters you can handle. Plus an ornery horse named Agnes who deserves all the sugar cubes she can eat.
She has breaking magic. She can break a vampire's legs even though that is pointless, and they heal and catch her, forcing someone competent to save the day...repeatedly. Here's the thing...vampires die if you destroy their hearts..and she can...well.she is too stupid to put it together. Basically, if you like reading books where the stupid heroine who is too incompetent to live gets by on luck and forces competent side characters to save her, this is for you...otherwise maybe just don't bother.
Good action but I'm not super invested in the characters. I'm also curious how many books will be in this series. There are too many secrets and undeveloped world-building aspects to be resolved in two more books. This series feels very much like it has to be one of those series that I binge through Hoopla and only start liking around book 5 of 12 :p
Fast-paced adventure with moral dilemma; Dream job with salary and possibly a cure for your ailing mother or save your nurturing landlady who treats you like a family member?
This book keeps the story going with more interesting takes on magic and supernatural beings and the enforcing of the rules that are supposed to keep the peace. Can't wait to see where it goes in the next book.
