Jane Austen's Dragons #11

Miss Georgiana and the Dragon

Rate this book
Hers was the plight of a gothic heroine, banished from her home by a cruel brother and his heartless wife, the Dragon Sage. Misunderstood and maligned, Georgiana’s only hope of rescue were letters to aunts describing the medieval dungeon to which she had been sent.

What matter that was a wee exaggeration for effect?

Boasting as many dragon teachers as human ones, Mrs. Fieldings’ School for the Improvement of Young Ladies promises to train Georgiana up to be a proper Blue Order member and a credit to her family. But she was already an accomplished young lady, and an appreciation for dragons was hardly a necessary accomplishment in the marriage mart. Clearly, she had nothing to learn. One way or another, Georgiana would make it through the school term with ther dignity and her opinions intact.

When the new dragon students arrive, needing warm-blooded student partners to complete their educations, Georgiana endures the indignity of a dragon-partner for the promise it will hasten the end of her tenure with Mrs. Fieldings. But dragons always bring complications. Dangerous, dragon-sized ones that not even the Dragon Sage could have predicted. Complications that turn the school term into something truly gothic.

A fresh new gas lamp fantasy adventure in the engrossingly intricate world of Jane Austen’s Dragons.

Six time BRAG Medallion Honoree, #1 Best-selling Historical Fantasy author Maria Grace has her PhD in Educational Psychology and is a 16-year veteran of the university classroom where she taught courses in human growth and development, learning, test development and counseling. None of which have anything to do with her undergraduate studies in economics/sociology/managerial studies/behavior sciences. She pretends to be a mild-mannered writer/cat-lady, but most of her vacations require helmets and waivers or historical costumes, usually not at the same time.

She stumbled into Jane Austen fan-dom in the mid '90s with Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility film, having somehow graduated HS without ever having read Austen. It was only a short leap then to consume all of Austen's works, in all their various media forms. In the hopes of discovering more works by Austen, she stumbled into the fan fiction forums, which naturally led to asking 'What if...' herself. Twenty nine books later, she still asks that question.

She writes gaslamp fantasy, historical romance and non-fiction to help justify her research addiction.

A really excellent adventure story! Slow and mild start at a girl's school, but quickly turns into fast page turning action. It was wonderfully enjoyable throughout the entire last 80% of the book, and well worth the short wait. Only cameos by ODC, but a fun depiction of Georgiana. Chaste, with relatively little violence, and that was off screen.

In a previous book, a certain petulant young lady almost made the biggest mistake of her life and, when helped out of her scrape, she wasn’t particularly grateful. Now, she is being sent to a dark, dank dungeon, cough, ahem, that is, a genteel school for young ladies to learn how to behave. Maria Grace continues to amuse, entertain, and enthrall me with her fascinating fantasy world of dragons paired with the gracious Regency world of manners in Jane Austen’s novels.

Miss Georgiana and the Dragon is the eleventh installment in a connected series of Gaslamp fantasy books, short stories, and novellas. They definitely read best in order since this one picks up a side thread where #8 Dragon Keeper’s Cotillion left off and runs parallel to #10 Dragons of Pemberley.

While her brother and his wife are off to the home estate, young Georgiana Darcy bitterly reflects on her imagined ill-usage as she arrives at an exclusive Blue Order School for Young Ladies and training school for Dragon Companions. The head mistress is calm and capable and the head girl assigned to show her the ropes is no nonsense, but not unkind, Georgiana is disconcerted to learn her embarrassing mistakes in London are known and several here are aware of her aversion toward dragons and the Blue Order world and its rules.

Soon, she is settled in school life and slowly begins to form evolving opinions and learning more about the world she has rejected until now. Georgie is helped along by new school friends, exciting activities including a ball to look forward to, and being away from the struggle and strain of the high expectations on her of being a member of one of the top dragon families and estates. But, there is a fly in the ointment- an obnoxious dragon student wants to be her companion in training, but constantly criticizes and messes up. There are fascinating other dragon teachers and students showing her a different side of dragons and making her realize that the Dragon Sage and her brother just might have taught her a thing or two about dragons and these dragons were teaching her even more that was worthwhile knowing. And, then there are those undercurrents of uneasy and hints that the secretive Snapdragon Society dealers in dragons and poachers for dragon parts are nearby. A regular whirl of excitement to whisk away bitterness of spirit and despondency for a young heroine experiencing her own adventure.

I’ve come to expect the high caliber writing, the intricate fantasy world of all things dragon, and the blending with the customs and manners of Regency society all brought together with a splendidly laid out plot and character development. The climb to the pinnacle of the climax was paced out to perfection as suspense built in the background of the school happenings until Georgie was faced with danger and had to act with the help of dragons.

I wasn’t a fan of Georgie in the earlier book, but she grew and learned then came into her own in this one. Again, I’m left excited to plunge into the next book of the series.

Georgiana Darcy has been sent to Mrs. Fieldings' School for Girls to learn how to get along better with dragons, and how to behave as a member of the Blue Order. She takes a strong dislike to Bede, one of the student-dragons at the school, who challenges, angers, and frustrates her at every turn. But when Bede is abducted from Mrs. Fieldings' by members of the Snapdragons, Georgiana and her fairy dragon friends rush to the rescue ...

I have been loving Maria Grace’s “Jane Austen’s Dragons” in audiobook form for over a year now. This year, I finally finished the 15th book… and I hope more are coming!

That said, I kind of went into this book with a little trepidation… because I actively disliked Georgiana from the previous books. She is a spoiled little brat. And I disliked her even more because I love her so much in the Kiera Knightley movie version of Pride and Prejudice that this version of Georgiana was almost loathsome to me. So… a whole book in her POV? I wasn’t excited.

Well.

Any book that can take a character I despised and turn her into one of my favorites is a GOOD book.

Georgiana’s redemption is slow and gradual, almost imperceptible… and then all of a sudden, I cared. I understood her. I sympathized with her perspective, while still rooting for her to change and grow… and she did not disappoint.

Maria Grace continues to weave a masterful story world set in the guidelines of Jane Austen’s works, but I’ve really enjoyed the series as it branches out beyond just retellings and has become its own story.

4 stars?

I agree with other reviewers who wrote that this book is weaker than the others in the series. I find the Georgianna character arc to be puzzling. There is no explanation as to why she went from being a quiet, fearful, caring person at the beginning of the series to a whiny, arrogant, unpleasant trouble-maker in later books. Now in this book, in a matter of months, she transforms into a mature, well-adjusted hero to dragons - again with little basis for the transformation in the story-line. Overall I don't see the reason for this book. The few parts of the book that moved the dragon-parts-smuggling plot along could have been included in a chapter or two of the better book that I hope is the next in the series. So why the 4-star rating? I love this series so much that I can't bring myself to give one of the books 3 stars. The 4-star rating probably represents more of my hope that the next book will return to the usual standard and my respect for the author and the series as a whole than a fair rating of this book.

What A Peculiar Ending

I was greatly optimistic to see the last 2 books of this 11+ book series, especially considering Ms. Grace just mentioned on her web page that she's 35,000 words into the next installment, and is headed in the right direction again.
Unfortunately, there leaves a lot of unanswered questions for the reader to rumiante over until then, unless I'm reading something wrong.

Georgiana took quite a few hard knocks throughout the entirety of the series, so going into this installment, I wasn't too sure if my interest in her storyline for 300+ pages was feasible or not.

Other reviewers have mentioned the peculiarities of Georgiana, including the incongruities of the way her character was developed so discordantly, and almost akin to remarkably conflicting passages, depending on how her role fit into the story at the time. For the most part, she's portrayed as the protagonist, and now, suddenly, she's the herione. The only other time that comes to mind is when she assisted in helping to save and bring home Elizabeth, after being kidnapped.

The only way to find out, was to jump in and begin reading...

Sure enough Georgiana's abrasiveness, petulance and all-around snarky side, came out to play, in the very beginning. Her acceptance of her own culpability in the recognition of her shortcomings, has been pretty much elusive. I realize she's been the sole female dotted upon by big brother and cousin up to this point. She's been pampered, spoiled, and lead to believe her life is one of leisure, and she would one day soon be the lady of the house. Until the day that Elizabeth shows up, she's never given it a thought that her brother may one day marry, and she would be placed in 2nd position.

This installment gives you the opportunity to see her side of the story, in her own thoughts and words, rather than being portrayed through a third party.

Once again, in this continuation of the series, there is very little interaction with Elizabeth and Darcy from this point forward, so be prepared for that aspect. This is mainly Georgiana's chance for redemption, and to dig deeper into her own place in the story.

By the end of this book, I became more supportive, empathic, and conducive to everything working out for Georgina. I must admit this one ended up being up there with one of my favorites, and just as much as I enjoyed the eventual transformation of Lydia, Miss Benning, so be it with Georgiana.

Now for the turn around of one more shameful mean-spirited, and reprehensible spoiled sister, as well as the mother. I'm quite sure we'll see further editions based upon these two characters.

Another Excellent Chapter in Jane Austen's Dragons

Everytime I see that Maria Grace has released a new book in the Jane Austen's Dragons series, I am overcome with joy. All of the books are so much fun, with richly nuanced characters, dialogue befitting of the time period (unlike the anachronistic speech one often finds in Regency period books), & an incredibly complex alternate version of early 19th century England. I cannot emphasize enough how well thought out & thoroughly believable Grace has made her dragon populated alternate world. She also demonstrates an impressive ability to craft realistic character growth arcs. This book was no different. Though it followed Georgiana Darcy, who has proven a bit insufferable over the last couple of books, Grace's capable storytelling soon had me rooting for the girl who had once been a horrible spoiled brat. These books are some of the most fun that I have found. Every one leaves me smiling & anxious to see where the story will go next. Although they follow the characters established in Jane Austen's classic Pride & Prejudice (as well as Sense & Sensibility), one does not have to be well acquainted with those works to enjoy these books. If you haven't read them, I highly recommend you start at the beginning, with Pemberly: Mr. Darcy's Dragon. If you are up to date, all I can say is, what are you waiting for?! Dive on in!

Maria Grace's newest book is unique and exciting!

I love that Georgiana has her own unique Jane Austen's Dragons book now, and it isn't just a repeat of the attempted elopement trope or the same reform school story as Lydia had, despite the same setting as SOME of previously-known characters.

Maria Grace's world of Regency era England WITH DRAGONS goes far beyond simple variations of Jane Austen's famous plots. This is a unique story, and despite it being the eleventh in the series, I am still amused, surprised, and excited about the different adventures Georgiana has when she is sent away to school because of her poor attitude and behaviour, and the new characters she encounters.

I appreciate the variety of personalities (some I recognize as what we may refer to today as varying levels of neuro-divergency) and the psychology of how they either learn from each other or are at absolute loggerheads. What happens (whether resolution of the conflicts or not) is excitingly unpredictable! It is unique to Maria Grace's fresh take on the possibility of dragons hidden in plain sight throughout Regency era England and Jane Austen's characters.

This is a delightful series of books. The author has created a wonderful world, a mixture of Regency and dragons, with its own history and mythology. I read from the first to the eleventh with great pleasure and gave each one five stars. But by the tenth book I began to get the feeling that Elizabeth’s character bore little resemblance to the canon. No, she remains a compelling protagonist, but her personality is more reminiscent of Darcy from P&P. She doesn't understand people well and doesn't get along well with them. Dragons, yes, but not people. I can’t help but feel that by the 10th book in the series, Lydia is an exact copy of Elizabeth from P&P in character and inclinations. The character traits of other protagonists (Anne Elliot, for example) are also slightly changed, but these changes are not as noticeable as the changes in Elizabeth. This is somewhat annoying and prevents me from fully enjoying this wonderful world and the fascinating plots of the books. Perhaps if the characters in the books had other names that had nothing to do with Austen, it would have been better.

Georgiana learns more than she thought

If you have not read the books in this series go read the first book! The series is wonderfully written with awesome characters not only in human form but all the dragons.
In this book Georgiana thinks she is being sent away as a punishment and is biased against dragon kind as she has only dealt with a few and honestly has been influenced by others. The school has various students both human and dragon. There she learns that her perception of her home life was not at all what she thought. There is much to learn and when faced with a very difficult dragon Georgiana does not take the others do.
This book was more about the lessons learned as a young woman learns the world does not revolves around her and her life was acting pretty good.
I was very excited to see another wonderful story added to the series.

I try to avoid spoilers, but can't do that entirely for my review of this one, my apologies.

I was not 100% sure how I felt about how Georgiana's character was developing over the previous couple of books, and particularly when compared against how Lydia's character developed, it felt a little jarring.

I don't want to call this a "redemption arc" necessarily, but it isn't inaccurate either. It also provides more insight into that character development of Lydia's that you really only see the result of.

All in all, the author has once again proven her ability to take these characters and make them her own while staying true to their source material, even if Miss Darcy was mostly a bit of a throw away character in Pride and Prejudice if I'm being honest.

It Works Out Well

When I started this book I feared that it would be about Georgiana Darcy’s teenage angst, but the intricate organization of the finishing school, with both human and dragon students and teachers drew her and me out of this theme to focus on middle status humans and dragons trying to manage their lives while all the attention was placed on the major dragons and landed aristocracy. Then the Dragon Bede appears at the school who is autistic in a culture that has no reference to autism, and things get wild.

I always wondered what happened to Georgiana at the school she was sent away to!! Great story about how she learns to understand and help dragons! Georgiana tries to hold onto her dislike of dragons, but as she learns in her classes and interacts with them, as she really listens to Pax, her fairy dragon, she is able to overcome her dislike and come to the rescue of one who has been kidnapped!! Love these books!! Can't wait for the next one!!! Suitable for anyone who loves dragons, adults and teens!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Georgiana Grows Up

What a wonderful edition to this delightful Draconic Series. It was a lovely journey to follow the spoiled, selfish heiress and watch her blossom into a compassionate, understanding dragon friendly person. There are no visitations with old friends,,,,no Elizabeth, no Darcy, and no darling Pemberly, Oh No. We are transported to the Blue Order School for Young Ladies and are happily entertained as we witness Georgianna learn to “think like a dragon”!

Slow start and then all the action is crammed into a few chapters. I liked some of the dragons at the school. Assume the next book will continue with the Snapdragon investigation plot. Unless there's another tangent to go off on (I whinge but then I keep keeping the series because I still need to know how it all ends, ha ha). Easy read, kept me entertained when it was far too warm out to do anything that requires movement.

A typical sequel in the series.

I cannot say that this is equal to the other stories in this series. In fact, I would recommend reading once, then any time you are re-reading the series skip over this story. Too much whining and complaining, not enough action, or even intrigue to keep my interest. I was tempted to stop reading and move on to another book.

Lady in a dungeon, guarded by dragons and waiting on a prince to rescue her.... scratch that. Sassy girls and dragons trying to project dominance. Another kidnapping and who will rescue whom. Another exciting book by Maria Grace, that can't be missed.

I love the world created by Maria Grace - characters we know from Jane Austen interacting with lots of different types of dragons! I will admit I was upset at the way Georgiana was portrayed in the past, but this book made me understand why she acted the way she did. There wasn't as much action as in previous books, seeing as we're at a "finishing school," but it was a very enjoyable read full of intrigue and character development. I hope Ms. Grace continues writing for this series!

I started this book with trepidation. Georgiana had become a very distasteful character and I didn't know if I could handle a whole book about her. Boy, was I wrong. Maria Grace very skillfully turned this character around and the book became quite enjoyable.

Most of the book describes how a proper young lady doesn’t like how an autistic dragon points out her hypocrisies, which is just too rude for her to handle. Points for saving that same dragon and being a spunky heroine with a dragon friend but … still really awkward all around.
