Hartland PD #6

Due Process

Rate this book
The vigilantes are still on the loose and they’ve upped their game. Now, instead of humiliating
their victims, they are outright killing them.

Joel Rangel was sent on a secret mission by the Chief of Police. He just needed to figure out
a way to get inside Zayn’s house when the sexy detective was too immersed in his computers to
hear his phone, the doorbell, or Joel’s constant knocking. If it had been anyone else, Joel might
have left, but if the chief was alarmed enough to send Joel to make certain Zayn was okay, he
wasn’t leaving until he at least talked to Zayn.

Zayn Rios tended to get lost in his work. Many times various coworkers would ensure he ate if
he got into one of his zones on the computer. But this time he was at home, and his boss sent
none other than Joel Rangel, one of the most gorgeous Omegas he’d ever met, to check on him.

Will the vigilantes get in the way of Zayn and Joel falling in love? Or will love prevail, helping
them to catch the bad guys?

This was book 6 in the "Hartland PD" series. Zayn Rios tended to get lost in his work so the chief sends someone to check on him. Joel Rangel was sent on a secret mission by the Chief of Police. After knocking and not getting an answer he finds a key. Joel finds that Zayn has been working on his home computer for days. Both of these guys are on the task force and the team isn't any closer to finding out who is humiliating and murdering Alpha cops. I really want to find out who is behind this I have some idea. Zayn finds out that someone has been spying on them. Joel and Zayn hook up and Joel has some self esteem issues he can't believe that Zayn wants him. When they find out that the other members have been meeting without them the team thinks they are the vigilantes. These two get a surprise and when they see a doctor they get a really big surprise. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Ok

Likes:
-The romantic leads find ways to communicate and interact respectfully outside the bedroom. Yea! Zayn makes Joel an equal economic partner, which is rare in the romance genre. Zayn eventually begins to respect Joel’s bids for emotional acknowledgment, and that’s also rare and a good sign for the marriage.
-The romantic leads support marriage.
-The romantic leads value children.

Dislikes:
-The author offers foreshadowing that promises Joel will be treated respectfully during intimacy and never delivers. Instead, the author has Zayn introduce edging and minor pain during intimacy as an accomplished practice without Joel’s prior consent, which introduces consent violations into the relationship script that are not safe to imitate or fun to read about. Then, the author pretends Joel prefers being unconscious to enjoying the full experience of intimacy with his husband. That defies my ability to suspend belief. No one who gets one dessert on treat day, wants to pass out after the first bite of ice cream sundae, before swallowing. No one prefers that their fun experiences be abbreviated because they pass out. It simply doesn’t make any sense.
Further, Zayn cares more about his estimation of his own prowess than he does about Joel’s desire to be treated with respect by keeping intimate partners things between the two of them. Zayn takes joy in Joel’s unhappiness and ignores Joel’s stated boundaries, adding yet more consent violations to the romantic interactions. Zayn’s behavior is emotionally abusive and it will destroy the relationship if he doesn’t stop it. There should be 10 positive verbal interactions for every single negative interaction to keep a relationship stable and Zayn doesn’t demonstrate this.

-The HFN has some cliffhanger elements and it’s not very happy so much as abruptly over after a crisis.

The book is okay as another installment of this series.

Brown eyes

Joel, brown eyes as Zayn calls him, is a sweet omega that works with Levan and is part of the task force. Zayn is the alpha that also works on the task force as a tech consultant. The chief sends Joel to check on Zayn who has been working from home all week with no communication, on a code to track the vigilante that is tracking the task force. After Zayn figures out how to use a code trace, he is surprised by Joel being there. This just leads to admitting feelings they both thought were not reciprocated, especially Joel with his low self esteem. But things move quickly to loving through a heat, moving in together, marriage and a big result from Joel's heat. All of this happens as the team has discovered the real identity of two vigilantes. As a result of Zayn & Jonah's hard work they come up with a way to get Zayn's code to become undetected helping them trace a third suspect. Will this work and if it does can they find a connection to the first two identified? This is a good story of falling in love quickly and working to stop some very dangerous people. One of those may even be a friend and colleague on the task force!

Getting along in the series

The task force knows three of the vigilantes but needs more proof and connections. Meanwhile Zayne and his omega settle into married life and birth of their children. At this point there are only two task force members not in a loving relationship. I am anxious to see them happy and to finally wrap up the case.

The mystery still continues and what is happening between Warren and Caleb? Or Warren is Caleb's ex who used him like the blurb said in "Igniting the Omega"? Now I have to read Caleb's book to find out!

Nice couple, and at last, we're getting somewhere.

Shame there's no timeline for the next book!
