To help the adorable cats at her Kitty Beret Café find forever homes, Ellie Warren agrees to host a rescue-only cat show. And as the proud owner of feisty feline Templeton, Ellie figures she can handle ruffled egos and prima donna posturing from the contestants and their pet parents. Until she finds show judge Benedict Hull stabbed to death backstage on the eve of the competition.
Ruth J. Hartman spends her days herding cats, and her nights spinning mysterious tales that make you smile. She, her husband, and their cats love to spend time curled up in their recliners watching old Cary Grant movies. Well, the cats sit in the people's recliners. Not that the cats couldn't get their own furniture. They just choose to shed on someone else's.
Ruth, a left-handed, cat-herding, farmhouse-dwelling mystery writer uses her goofy sense of humor as she writes tales of klutzy women who find trouble without even trying. Ruth's husband and best friend, Garry, reads her manuscripts, rolls his eyes at her weird story ideas, and loves her in spite of her insistence that all of her books have at least one cat in them.
80% cozy and 20% mystery -- and the mystery kind of evolves around Ellie, rather than her intrepidly sussing the killer out. But, somehow, I'm charmed all the same. All the cat antics and cat show details are crazy over the top (and there's a lot of 'em!) yet I enjoyed every crazy idiosyncratic second of this audio book.
You definitely need to be well on the way to becoming a crazy cat lady, or empathetic enough to tolerate all the 'pet parents' in this story. I happen to be allergic to cats (oh the irony!) but I love 'em anyway so I get my kitty fix in fiction.
For me, the mystery fell flat -- even more than the first book. It's in the background most of the time, with the cat show being front and center in all it's glorious zaniness. Still, there is a murder, and the killer is caught and Ellie is in peril part of the time so...
Again, the draw to this series is definitely the cozy aspect of the kitty cafe and all that entails. Pure crazy chaos and I'm totally there for it. Will definitely be continuing with the series.
Felines and Fatalities is the second book in the Kitty Beret Café Mystery series by Ruth J. Hartman. It’s a fun cozy mystery- a whodunnit with murder, crime & investigation, quirky characters, a colourful cat café, plenty of felines, a cat show, humour, banter, drama, adventure, and suspense. As we discovered in Book One, Ellie Warren owns the Kitty Beret Café where lattes and felines abound. In this instalment Ellie gets persuaded to host a cat show for rescue cats. Seems pretty straightforward, doesn’t it? Well, not so much. Things take an unexpected and sinister turn when one of the judges is murdered. With a nose for mystery, Ellie gets swept up in the investigation and is soon on the hunt for the killer. What happens makes for an intriguing read. Templeton stole the show again! Love him! Looking forward to seeing what Ellie and Templeton get up to next. Happy Reading!
This book was great. This was well written. I really enjoyed that the book took place somewhere other than the cafe. I am excited for the romance between Detective Dare and Ellie. I liked who won the competitions in the rescue show. I am happy for Ellie's best friend.
Felines and Fatalities is Book 2 in the Kitty Beret Café Mystery series. When Ellie, owner of the Kitty Beret Café, agrees to put on a cat show for rescued cats she was not expecting anything more than an adventure involving cats in cute clothes. Things suddenly take a turn when Ellie stumbles onto the corpse of one of the cat show judges in a storeroom on the first day of the cat show. Now Ellie, along with her detective friend, Simon, are involved in a murder mystery that they set out to solve. Of course, no mystery can go unsolved without the aid of Ellie’s beloved rescue cat, Templeton, who is clever enough to help dig up clues of his own. When Templeton starts bringing mysterious items to Ellie, she is baffled by what they mean and who at the cat show these items belong to.
When the news spreads at the cat show about the death of one of the judges some of the reactions from the contestants are not quite what Ellie expected. Some of the contestants are happy about the judge’s death, which of course bumps them up to the top of the suspect list. Is it the sisters who constantly bicker? Is that the secret that one of them is hiding? Is it the begruntled cat mom who terrorizes everyone in her wake? Ellie, Simon, and Templeton are determined to uncover the identity of the murderer in their midst. As they start to uncover clues about each of the cat show contestants, they are stunned by what they discover.
I loved this book and really enjoyed how the author made one of the rescued cats an integral part of the story as he helped to dig up clues of his own. It seemed that Templeton was clever and had a keen sense of who the murderer was before anyone else did. Ellie was sweet and caring but also had her own sleuthing skills that came into action when needed. I loved the subtle love story that started to unfold throughout the book between Ellie and Detective Simon. Templeton played a large part in trying to bring Ellie and Simon together as he played matchmaker between the two of them. Ellie, Simon, and Templeton made a great team as they worked together to solve the murder mystery. A cute and enjoyable read.
Ellie and Templeton are back and this time, as well as running the Kitty Beret Café and her costume business, Ellie has a new cat come in looking for a home, but it is a sad case as the owner has died and it is one of her regular customers. It turns out that her dying wish was for Ellie to run a cat show for rescued cats, Ellie thinks it’s a great idea, but is not sure how she will find the time or the money to do it. Fortunately for Ellie, the older lady has donated funds so that she can do it and so Ellie goes ahead and finds a venue and people to judge the entries.
On the morning of the cat show, Ellie is ready to get all the café’s residents ready for their show, this part goes smoothly, but that is the only thing which does. As soon as Ellie enters the building, the let parents descend with demand and complains, with some compliments and thanks sprinkled in, so as she is heading to start her list, she goes into a storeroom, unfortunately she isn’t the only one in there, she finds one of the judges murdered and gets locked in with him.
The janitor comes round and finds her thanks to a raging Templeton and let’s her out, calling the police at the same time, so Detective Dare and his partner show up, but declare that the show can go on as long as the storeroom remains out of bounds. This makes everyone a little bit happier, but the demanding pet parents continue to wreak havoc. As the judging continues, Templeton starts doing his usual thing and brings clues to Ellie, but will they find who the culprit is before anyone else gets hurt? This is another cozy mystery full of felines capers and crazy cat people which will keep everyone reading throughout.
This was an utterly adorable addition to the Kitty Beret Café Mystery series! Although it can be read as a stand-alone, reading the first one will give you more of a background on Ellie and Simon (as well as the murder that rocked their small town the autumn before this one takes place).
I absolutely loved the addition of the cat show going on, it provided a nice backdrop to the cast of characters (both old and new, human and feline), while also showing just how people aren't always who (or what) you believe them to be. Filled with many suspicious characters (and a few that you wish you could just reach through the pages and smack), this cozy mystery will keep you guessing (and laughing) until the very end.
Once again Templeton has managed to steal the show, "helping" solve this newest whodunnit with his own brand of feline investigative skills. Hands down, he is still my favorite character in this series (although there are a couple of humans who are close second).
Overall, I definitely think this novel will appeal to people who enjoy cozy mystery novels with interesting characters (and cats)! I would read more from this author (and am in fact looking forward to the next installment of this series).
DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.
5 Stars Felines and Fatalities (A Kitty Beret Cafe Mystery Book 2) by Ruth J. Hartman
Felines and Fatalities is the second book in A Kitty Beret Café Mystery Series. What a fun cozy mystery with just the right amount of suspense and the twists and turns will have you turning the pages trying to figure out what is going to happen next. I love this authors style of writing and attention to detail along with fully developed and relatable characters make for a fun yet suspenseful read . Once I started reading I couldn’t put it down until I finished. Although this can be read as a standalone I highly recommend reading the first book if you haven’t already started it. Ellie is the owner of Kitty Beret Café which she opened in hopes of rescuing cats and hopefully adopting them out to her customers. Ellie gets asked to host a cat show in which she’s not sure until she’s told its just for rescued cats. What starts out as something funs turns not so fun really quickly when someone is murdered. Now she finds herself working with Dare investigating a murder. Can they solve the mystery before its to late? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I look forward to reading more from this Author.
As you can probably guess from the title, Felines and Fatalities is a cat-themed cozy mystery. It’s the perfect book for when your cat has decided that your lap is the most comfortable place in the world and you’re forced to sit still for the foreseeable future! It’s the second book in the series, but you can read it as a standalone if you don’t mind a few spoilers for book 1.
Ellie has plenty on her plate running a cat show - so many logistics to worry about and fussy pet parents coming to her with requests and complaints. If you’ve ever been involved in running events you’ll feel a lot of sympathy for her! And of course, one of the judges has the audacity to get himself murdered. But the show must go on…
The star of this series is, of course, Templeton. Ellie looks after many rescue cats but Templeton is hers, the one she will carry around everywhere to keep out of trouble. The detectives doubt Templeton’s ability to contribute to the mystery-solving process, but Templeton would never let a human dictate what he can and can’t do.
This is an entertaining read that will particularly appeal to animal lovers. It’s a five-star read for me, and I’m looking forward to reading the next book, Meows and Mayhem (which I might save for next time I’m cat-sitting…)
Ruth Hartman continues to come up with quirky characters completely surrounded by cats. In this sequel to Hairballs and Homicide, Ellie is coerced into putting on a cat show for rescue cats. Somehow, in a short amount of time, she manages to put together an event covering several days, with several zany contestants and three judges. But just before the first competition starts, Ellie discovers one of the judges in a storeroom, murdered. The handsome Simon Dare and the grumpy Detective Lingstrome are immediately on the case, but Ellie and her cat Templeton aren’t about to leave all the work to the pros. A few things puzzled me. First, I wondered how the show was allowed to go on as scheduled, with very little delay, considering the murder had just taken place and everyone there would have been a suspect. Second, I wondered how all these rescue cat owners would have been able to get time off from work for what seemed like four days for an event like this. There were lots of names - besides the main characters, there were all the contestants and their cats, plus all the workers and customers at Ellie’s cafe - so I often had to scroll back to find out who was who.
Ellie and Templeton are at it again! This time at a cat show! One of Ellie’s long time customers passed away and in her will left some money for Ellie to take and put on a cat show specifically for rescue cats. Ellie, not wanting to refuse the dying wishes, decides to take on the request.
Once at the venue, Ellie is in search of some supplies when she comes across a dead body. The body was that of one of the supposed judges of the event. Ellie calls Simon right away and they decide to carry on with the show. The murderer could still be in the building.
Templeton is up to his normal shenanigans and finding items. Ellie remembering that the items he found a few months ago led to the previous murderer, she doesn’t dismiss anything he finds. Ellie’s attention is spread thin as she is hosting the show, Templeton keeps running off, cat people seem to be prissy and full of complaints. What else can go wrong today?
This book was better than the first in the series. Yes it talked about cats a lot but focused on outside things as well making it more mysterious than the first book. I once again fell in love with Ellie and her sleuth cat.
This is the second book in the A Kitty Beret Cafe Mystery series. If you love a suspenseful fun read that will keep you turning pages then this is definately a read for you. We are back with Ellie Warren, the owner of Kitty Beret Cafe and also the lady responsible for re homing and caring for several stray cats. After her last adventure dealing with murder Ellie just wants a quiet life. How hard can that be right?
When a lady she hasn't seen before arrives with a cat and a dying wish from her mother the Ellie put on a cat show, despite all her reservations and doubts Ellie agrees. It's only a cat show after all and if it helps the cats get re homed even better. What Ellie doesn't count on is the dead body being found in the store room of the venue. Now with the help of her friend Simon and her trusted cat Templeton they need to find out who the murderer is and why they have decided to strike now. Is anyone else in danger or was there just something about the victim? This is a fun mystery to read and with the added bonus of very smart cats it gives it a nice twist.
I loved the first book in this series! So of course I had to get my own paws on this beloved gem. I love animals, and cats are very special to me, so of course reading this and hearing about the cats in the story and around the protagonist warms my heart completely! This second installment does not disappoint at all.
We have our fan favorite Ellie back with another mystery in her cat cafe at hand. I loved how her personality and ability to be as curious and inquisitive as she was in the first, was just as strong in this book! This book I found was a quicker pace than the first, as we knew the main characters and some of the felines, and I found the story took different turns than I expected, I was very much immersed in the story and wondering what would happen next! Could not put it down! I was hooked! Love this book and this wonderful author!
The series appeals to me as I do love cats, and I love a good cozy mystery. I love when an author takes all your personal favorite things and makes a book off them! Highly recommend this must read book and author!
Ellie Warren returns for the second novel of the series.
She is still owner of the Kitty Beret Cafe where she still dresses up the cats in cute costumes to help them get adopted (I am not sure if that is helping or not).
When she is approached to host a cat show, Ellie is unsure. Because the show is for rescued cats, she agrees. What was suppose to be a fun performance, becomes more deadly when one of the judges is murdered.
With the help of her cat Templeton and Detective Dare, Ellie once again gets swept up in the investigation and wants to find the killer.
What I love about cozy mysteries is that there are so many different directions to go and various paths to setup the plot as well as the murder. I find this one to be very creative.
I enjoy the characters and the setting of a cat cafe (which I really need to go visit one). At Least this gives me a glimpse of what a cat cafe would be like.
I searched online to see if there was another book to look forward to but sadly I didn't see anything. I really hope so.
Felines and Fatalities (A Kitty Beret Cafe Mystery Book 2) by Ruth J. Hartman. This is the cutest story to add to the Kitty Beret Cafe Mystery Series! This can be read as a standalone but I highly recommend reading the first one to get a feel for the characters and town. This is the second installment where Ellie Warren who runs the Kitty Beret Cafe has decided to host a rescued cats show at her cafe! She is so excited and knows that this will only help with the unwanted cat population. Seeing all these cute felines she has not doubt people will be in line to adopt them. Everything is going great until one of the judges is murdered. Knowing this could ruin everything Ellie and her cat Templeton are on the case along with Detective Dare and the grumpy Detective Lingstrome. This fun story will keep you turning the pages until you figure out who killed the judge! Be sure and read this fun Kitty Beret Cafe story!
Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series, I was looking forward to this second instalment, and I was definitely not disappointed. I loved being back with Ellie Warren, the owner of the ‘Kitty Beret Café’, and her very clever cat Templeton, who we were introduced to in book one. In this storyline, Ellie hosts a cat show for rescued cats, but the fun turns serious when one of the judges is murdered. Ellie, with the help of Detective Dare, and of course Templeton, has to run the cat show, crown a ‘Best in Rescue Winner’ of the competition, and find the killer! This is a heartwarming cozy mystery which kept me hooked from start to finish, and the plot twists kept me guessing as to the identity of the killer. I felt fully immersed in the storyline, and engaged with Ellie, so much so, that I felt like I was investigating alongside her, once again. I look forward to catching up with Ellie and Templeton again soon.
Ruth Hartman has combined her love of cats and writing to give us another unique story in A Kitty Beret Café Mystery series.
This is just the book to take a few hours out of your day to curl up with a glass of wine and some lovely outdoor me time.
Ellie and her trusty sidekick her superbly dressed cat Templeton once again find themselves unwittingly right in the middle of a murder. Who would have thought a cat show could be deadly? As the Detectives investigate the super sleuth cat and Ellie are right there with them.
This entertaining adventure and quirky tale had me laughing out loud at the feline antics and imagining just what my animals would say in those moments.
This quirky cozy mystery is fun and has a few colourful characters. This feel-good story is original and full of banter and is a great escape.
I have really enjoyed reading this Cozy Mystery. It's such a cute series. Just when I thought Addison Moore and Bellamy Bloom couldn't top the previous books, they bring their A game and knock the ball out of the park with this one..... This is my favourite book yet, and what makes it even better is that Lottie and the rest of the gang are back, and the crossover is fantastic. While there isn't as much drama surrounding Jasper's ex Camila, there is a lot more drama when wives are revealed..... I honestly don't know how to put into words how amazing this book is. Plus, now that Bizzy and Leo aren't the only ones with special abilities (like reading minds), it makes it all the more special when they do. Thanks to Mack (the mayor/ex-bestfriend), Bizzy is hosting a seniors bake off at the Inn, and it appears to be going well, judging by the turnout.
This is a quick mystery sure to steal your attention from other things you should be doing. I loved that it is a mystery but also stays lighthearted, never getting too dark.
Ellie hosts a rescue cat show instead of the pompous, breed-restricted cat shows that are normally presented. She wants to help her lovely kitties find a home, and thanks to a previous friendly customer she may have a chance to do that while showing them off. Before all the fun starts, Ellie stumbles upon a dead body. Can she help find homes for her rescues while trying to solve this murder or will one cancel the other out?
I never expected to read a book about kittens and murder, but what a wonderful mashup! You’ll be able to sit and soak this up within a day very easily. Pick it up and kick back to see what Ellie and her cats get up to.
“That’s the thing, he wouldn’t tell us” “But don’t you have ways of making people talk?” “Ellie, this isn’t a 40’s murder mystery on TV.”
Ellie and her cat Templeton are smack dab in the middle of it, again, and trying to play detectives after a judge at her rescue-cat cat show was found murdered - and I’m so happy they are! Sequels don’t always have the same excitement as the originals; however, this one is awesome! The continued adventures of the cast of cats and characters was such fun. It was nice to revisit the cat cafe and the regulars, both human and feline! The adventure was not predictable and as alway, the author did a great job of telling the story and taking me along for the ride. Great as a stand alone book, it even better if you’ve read the first one!
Oh my, my favorite cat series is back. The Kitty Beret Café Mystery series is fantastic. Both humorous, funny, mysterious and full of cat antics that make the books so darn entertaining. This book was just as entertaining as the previous. There are cat antics at the cafe; grandma; a rescue cat cat pageant with a little murder on the side and some sexy detective flirting. The characters are just as quirky as can be. They make me of the town I grew up in. They are so relatable and remind me of some people I know. The plot line runs smooth even with some plot twists in it. I love the humor and cat antics. The whole idea of a cat café is so cool and unique. The tone is fun, engaging and just right for a cozy mystery. This is a series that you should try out.
Felines and Fatalities: (A Kitty Beret Cafe Mystery #2) by Ruth J. Hartman
This isn't the first book I've read by the author. This book is amazing and I'm glad we get more of Ellie. I love this book. Felines and Fatalities is the second book in A Kitty Beret Café Mystery Series.
Ellie is back. This time she's not a murder suspect, but the one who finds the body. He was a judge and supposed to be one of the judges for the cat show. Now her shop is once again involved with a murder. What is going on? The quote I chose for Ellie is: "Yeah. The cost. Though it's an interesting idea, it's all I can do to run my business and pay for the care of the cats who live here. Not sure I could afford to do a show."
Felines and Fatalities is the second book in the Kitty Beret Café Mystery series by Ruth J. Hartman. It’s a fun cozy cat mystery- this book has lots of humor, cats, a cat Café, crime and much more. Ellie gets persuaded to host a cat show for rescue cats. While at the cat show something mysterious happenes. With a nose for mystery, Ellie gets swept up in the investigation and is soon on the hunt for the killer. What happens at the cat show? What goes on? This was a cute, adorable, crime filling cozy mystery. It had me laughing and liking the characters and the felines. A good read.
Felines and Fatalities is the 2nd book in the Kitty Beret Cafe series. It could be enjoyed as a stand alone. There are references to the first book and overlapping characters, however, the author provides enough details you don't feel like you're lacking information. This book is full of humor and quirky characters. Ellie is a cat fanatic and her employees are too, with their own crazy quirks. Her grandma is a hoot and her cat Templeton's behavior is hilarious. While this book is a mystery, surrounding a murder, it is light hearted and not a hair raising suspense. I did enjoy it and was happy for the progression between Ellie and Simon. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Ellie is back again and this time she is trying to run a very lengthy cat show for rescue cats. Unfortunately one of the judges, who is an actual judge, turns up dead. Plus side, we get to see more interactions between Ellie and the hot Detective Simon Dare, although the relationship between Detective Dare and her kitty Templeton just continues to get cuter. Again the writer does an amazing job of mixing a murder mystery up into a cute rom-com with such adorable humor. Again, the author does a fantastic job of writing the supporting characters in such a way that I was kept guessing until the very end as to who was the murderer. I am excited to read the third installment in the series!
This amazing suspense novel definitely caught my attention. Full of drama, suspense, and did I mention cats...that's right this wonderful suspense novel is based in a Cafe full of beautiful cats. So If your a cat lover trust me when I say you have to read this one. This is the second book in the series and it was every bit as amazing as the first. The characters are well developed, the plot is interesting and complex, and the cover is beautiful. Trust me when I say I can't wait to see what our author comes up with next for Kitty Beret Cafe and it's owner Ellie Warner.
This book was a good one. I spent my Friday afternoon reading it and I was pleasantly surprised. I haven't read this author before and I have only read a few cozy mysteries before this one. But I am glad I took the time to read this one. It was a fun cozy mystery, with a cat café, murder, and adventure. The main characters were great and I enjoyed all of the funny bits throughout the book. I am looking forward to reading more by this author because I didn't want to put this one down. Happy Reading!
Felines and Fatalities is the second book in the A Kitty Beret Cafe Mystery series. I hadn't read this author before but was not disappointed with this introduction. Ellie, her cafe, and her cats make for a fun, quick read. I enjoyed Ellie and how she goes about solving the murder of a competition judge. The story is lighthearted and fun. The characters, especially the cats, are an entertaining bunch that adds to the story. I thought this was a nice cozy mystery, and I look forward to reading more from this author soon.
Ellie, the owner of the Kitty Beret Cafe is asked to put on a cat show for rescues. Kitty Beret Cafe is the ultimate cafe hosting rescue cats. The show itself is a job, but helping to solve a murder is a whole 'nother job in itself! One of the judges of the show is found murdered and both Ellie and her handy sidekick cate, Templeton jump on board to lend a hand to solve the case! This is a quick read - if you love cats, you'll love the story! This is book two in the series. But you can read it as a stand alone.
The entire gang is back in another Kitty Beret Cafe Mystery and I am so happy about it. I love this series so much that I would still be happy if we were on book 40 and beyond. This series definitely keeps you entertained.
A beloved customer of the cafe has passed away. One of her final requests, have a cat show for sheltered cats. That's what leads Ellie to find another dead body and that is how our story begins.
Ellie and Detective Simon once again follow the clues.
This is a great read if you enjoy suspense, cats and a good cozy mystery.
Fun cozy read to curl up to. This is book 2 of the series and this story is totally enjoyable. Ellie Warren, owner of Kitty Beret Cafe, was asked by a past customer to run a rescue cat show. Hesitant at first, Ellie decides to run with it…that is until she has a run in with a deceased cat judge! Who is behind the murder of a cat judge?? Definitely read and find out.
This series is fun to read….cozy murder mystery with a love of cats in costumes! I also just love Templeton… especially my favorite line of “I’m ready to cause mayhem”.
