Finding Grace

Rate this book
She needs to get to her cousin’s house before nightfall. He needs a break from the prying eyes of Society. The snowstorm had other plans.

Grace has one goal during the Christmas House Party: to secure her future with a financially viable marriage of convenience to help her family’s impoverished situation. If unsuccessful, she has agreed to accept the marriage arrangement to a man twice her age. Having set her sights on the Duke of Norfolk, Grace is determined to arrive at her cousin’s estate without delay. But nothing, it seems, will go as planned.

Falling in love is the last thing on Ollie’s mind when he finds an unconscious damsel in distress in the woods. He comprehends the threat of ruin and scandal surrounding their situation, but with the snowstorm raging, he has no choice but to shelter the unaccompanied woman until the storm ceases.

Grace's spark for life causes Ollie to see his seclusion in a new light. Can there really be hope and sunshine after the storms he has endured? Grace wonders if her life has taken more than just a wrong turn in the woods. Will she still be able to support her family and pursue the marriage of convenience when her heart is already spoken for?

Finding Grace is a stand-alone sweet Regency romance with a happily ever after.

Once upon a time Allie fell in love, quite by accident. She was blinded by a deep friendship, which happened to be the perfect recipe for a love match to grow right under her nose, without her noticing.

The Regency era speaks to her with its rules, etiquette, and charm. Of course, the top hats and cravats are sure winners. She can quote the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice with 98% accuracy, plays the pianoforte with moderate proficiency, and has an affinity for the beneficial exercise of walking.

Allie is a famous author--at least in her own home--where her very own Mr. Darcy dotes on her and where their children play without the supervision of a governess.

DNF at 21%. Her father was horrible, to live beyond their means and to practically sell her, so her sisters could live better, but not her. They treated her poorly and she accepts it. She get rescued and is a bitch. He keeps trying to help her, but she says she’s not weak and can do it herself. Every time she says that, she’s wrong and then relents and accepts his help. She’s combative and feisty with a helpful stranger, but a milquetoast doormat with everyone else? Nope.

Fun, easy romance with a swoony MMC and a likable FMC.
Low angst.
Great chemistry.
Clean.

(I lost my full review, but I read this only a couple weeks ago and I still remember that I really enjoyed it.)

Forced proximity, hidden identity/mistaken identity, regency era, a Christmas time romance all come together and basically make a perfect sweet romance. I love, love, love this story. The sacrifice Grace is constantly willing to give for her family, the love and devotion there. The quiet way Ollie goes about caring for Grace, how his heart opens up to the possibility of love again. Ollie is absolutely wonderful.

The attraction, the chemistry, the witty conversations- it is all there. Allie Kensington did a fantastic job with the characters, plot, setting, all aspects of the story. It all makes for a lovely sweet romance and that beautiful happily ever after so many readers love.

Grace and gratitude

Grace is the oldest of eight daughters and at 23, almost an old maid. Her family needs her to make an advantageous marriage, but are happy to give her a little time to find a husband who appeals to her. An accident on the way to her cousin's house party throws her into Ollie's company.
A wonderful romance. I truly enjoyed spending time with this couple as they gently learn about one another with all of the decorum required in Regency times.
This is a terrific start to a series.

Allie Kensington is becoming one of my favorite clean historical authors. She puts all the chemistry needed, all the feels, all the anxiety, without the detailed spice. I love reading her stories.
This one had a lot of tropes working in it's favor and some of my favorites: forced proximity, slow burn, hidden identity (done very neatly), damsel in distress, he takes care of her, he falls first. So many good ones!
It was a fast and easy read, I felt the angst and I loved it. It was clean, it was proper, but it was not bland, plenty of heartwarm feelings and chemistry.

Cute Regency but dialog felt off

I have read lots of Regency novels. I really enjoyed this storyline - it was fresh and fun. But I struggled with the dialog for some reason. It felt really formal and too stiff given the setting. I just wasn't a huge fan of how formal this came across and I have read a lot of these kinds of books.
Loved the characters - Ollie and Grace.

Content: Clean read with some triggers with loss of a spouse and death
Language: None
Religious: No

Happy reading!

DNF

This is supposedly set in regency times. The first chapter was a little pedantic. We have to meet the heroine and have all six of her younger sisters delineated with ages and canned personalities. The heroine learns that an arranged marriage is being arranged with an earl twice her age who has children almost as old as she is! (In and of itself, this is not a deal-breaker for the plot. The part that I complain about is how often we are told in just the first 3 chapters that he is twice her age and has children almost as old as she is!) Our heroine then sets her cap for a duke who will be at the house party she will shortly attend. (We know nothing about this duke. Hopefully he is also not twice her age with children almost as old as she is.)

Suddenly, at the beginning of the next chapter, the heroine is galloping on her horse, alone, because she is bored hanging out at the inn where her chaperone is sick and the chaperone's daughters don't need help taking care of her (the chaperone). So the heroine took off on her horse. Her horse, you say? Yes. Her horse was coming along. (One wonders why a financially strained family would go to the expense of having the horse travel with her.) Now having heard about the horse, we learn that the chaperone did not let her ride the horse alongside the carriage during the journey. (With unreasonable demands like that, no wonder the chaperone got sick.) Anyway, so she, the heroine, was on her horse. Alone. An easy half day trot to her cousin's house which she has never been to, but thankfully there is a shortcut described by the groom who kindly saddled her horse but then let her hare off on her own. Her reliable horse somehow spooks and throws her. Of course she twists her ankle and cannot stand. All is lost.

We now are introduced to the hero who, riding along, comes across a riderless horse and goes in search of the rider. He sees a form on the ground. Lo! It is a human form. As the hero approaches, he is startled to notice that this is a woman, not a man! (The hero obviously has no powers of observation. The horse would have had a side saddle on it, which should have been glaringly obvious, and he should have been looking for a woman to begin with. Or if for some bizarre, completely out-of-period reason the heroine was riding with a man's saddle, one would think that would have been a major plot point mentioned earlier. And something that would shock our hero.)

Our bold hero now picks up the unconscious woman in his arms, and then MOUNTS HIS HORSE WHILE HOLDING HER. At least he put her over his shoulder, despite his concerns for propriety. When he arrives home, he gets off the horse WHILE STILL HOLDING HER, and then struggles to open the stable door with one hand while a) cradling the woman, and b) not letting her horse go wandering off. He must get her inside as quickly as possible, but he must stable the horses first, but he can't put her down in the snow, but the door won't budge. What a dilemma.

At this point, I was so concerned about the intelligence of our hero, and so confused about the mental thought processes of our heroine, that I decided to not torture them any more and so abandoned the book.

This is a very sweet and fun romance. Grace Campbell is told by her father that an older Earl has asked for her hand in marriage, and he will be returning from Spain in the spring. Grace is shocked as she has always wanted to marry for love. Her father explains with their financial situation it is hard to send two daughters into the Season marriage. Grace tells her father that he can use her dowry to help all six of her sisters. Grace is going to a house party given by her cousin, Susan, where she hopes to find someone of her own choosing to marry. Susan has provided her with a list of the invited guests and Grace has set her sight on the Duke of Norfolk. Grace was traveling with Mrs. Mead and her two daughters. Mrs. Mead became sick on the trip. Four days of resting and Mrs. Mead is still not able to continue the trip. Grace decides she will take a horse and go by herself her cousin's house which was suppose to be only 10 miles away. Grace gets bucke off her horse and the horse runs away. She has injured her ankle but continues to walk in the snow. She hears a noise, then sees shadows and faints. Ollie and his dog have been out in the woods and had found Grace's house and now they have found her. What will happen when Grace regains consciousness? The snow has continued and they find themselves snowed in without a chaperone. When Grace is finally able to leave, will she be able to find what she is looking for or will she wed the older Earl in the spring? Read this interesting story to find out.

Nice, But…

While this is a lovely story and it was quite nice to read how they came together, there are too many dull and repetitive passages. The writing is average to poor, and littered with Americanisms. It is also lacking in research. For example, a hunting lodge isn’t a one bedroomed cottage. It would have caretakers in residence, as well as a substantial stable with space for carriages, or a separate carriage house.
I did like the story so I will read the next one and hope for improvement.
Worth a read.

3.5 stars rounded up! I really liked this it was sweet and cute and I really enjoyed the characters. There's no spicyness / it's a very clean read but still good if you love a regency romance (My thoughts below)

PLOT:

Grace is "on the shelf" and out of options. Her younger sisters are getting a season in London and her family is out of money so to do that, she needs to enter a marriage of convenience. Grasping at her lost chance to secure an alternate proposal or have to marry a man twice her age, Grace heads off to her cousin's holiday party and gets injured and stranded on the way. She is saved by Ollie, a mysterious man in the woods and they come to love each other, but he's not what he seems to be.

THOUGHTS:

- I HATED GRACE'S FAMILY! her dad is despicable, using his older daughter as a piece of meat to secure funding for his other daughter's futures? And it's not just to any lord, but one allegedly double her age and not known for being kind. BARF. Also, the sisters didn't NEED a season but since they're younger they'd have more of a shot. Maybe if he managed money better, lived in his means and didn't rely on rich family members or his poor older daughter, he wouldn't need to barter her off.

- I know it was common for the time to be dutiful and prioritize your family's future but I just wanted to smack Grace sometimes. Like girl! You can be happy, find love for yourself and better your prospects, you don't need to literally pimp / sacrifice yourself to save all of your sisters. Also, I felt she was a little inconsistent sometimes. For example, she's SUPER demure and puts everyones needs over her own but when she's with Ollie, she's a spitfire and full of quips and combative. It just seemed a little weird to me, especially since she was never like that until they're shown together.

- Ollie was a great character and I loved seeing them banter and take charge of each other. I personally wished that there was more spicyness / some smut! It could have been really great (that's just my romance preference though!)

This is a sweet Regency romance.

Grace's family is in financial difficulties. She must find a rich husband before she is forced to marry an Earl twice her age.

Grace sets out to attend her cousin's Christmas House Party and hopes to meet and marry the Duke of Norfolk who has been a bit of a recluse. Otherwise, she will have to accept the hand of the man twice her age.

Grace is delayed by her chaperone falling ill. She decides to go on alone but is thrown by her horse and sprains her ankle so is unable to walk.

Ollie rescues her and takes her to his cabin during a terrible snowstorm They are trapped there whilst Grace recovers from her injuries and the storm rages outside. She did not mean to fall in love with Ollie. Can she go against her vow to endure a marriage of convenience, or will she choose love?

I received this book as an ARC and enjoyed it immensely.

Darling story of a selfless young woman willing to sacrifice, for the good of her family. Grace is put in an non-desirable situation, but she is going to do her best to find an alternative option.
I really enjoyed this story. The plot is interesting and entertaining. The family is having financial worries. Grace knows she must do something to help, she plans to find a way that is also suitable to herself. The characters are charming and engaging. Grace is so kind and giving. , but she also has a bit of a stubborn streak. Ollie is still suffering the tragic loss of his wife. Will love be able to penetrate his closed heart. A sweet clean regency romance that will make you laugh, cry and feeling warm and happy. There are a few typos and wrong words used, but not many. This is the first book in the series. It is a complete HEA read. Looking forward to Grace’s sisters stories.

This was a well-written Regency romance. I liked Grace and Oliver as pov characters and enjoyed reading about them falling in love. Grace's dad is a piece of work he basically sold off his eldest daughter to a man 20 years older because he made bad investments and now their family has no money. Then he has the audacity to call Grace a dutiful daughter for sacrificing to marry this man to help her family. He even commented that she is making her sisters so happy because now they can have a season in London but didn't seem to care about Grace's happiness or all she was giving up.

Ok rant over. lol I love the trope of the couple being trapped together and through extreme circumstances getting to know each other and falling in love. The author did a good job with story and I would read more by her given a chance.

I LOVED this story!
It is a fun book of a young lady willing to sacrifice her happiness for her dear sisters... but she has one chance to change the way it can happen. So she plans to attend a house party. Unfortunately fate has another plan and she is injured and lost in a snowstorm.
Then arrives Ollie!
I loved the interaction of the characters. I felt for both as to their loss of a future, but in different ways. I liked how they both saved each other as well.
If you love romances, rescues and humor then you are not going to be disappointed in this book and this author!
I recommend it wholeheartedly!
I received an ARC copy of this book and all the opinions are my own.

3.5/5

It wasn't my favourite but it wasn't horrible either. Tbh I'm kinda ambivalent about this whole thing.

It was obvious who Ollie was since the beginning but I loved him, he was so sweet to Grace and so respectful! Ngl, Grace made me laugh with "close your eyes while you're taking my shoe off, you cannot see my ankle" lmao.

Grace's cousin was sweet, I liked her. I don't care how much Grace's father loved her, he still gave her hand o an earl 20 years older than her with no hesitation. And then he thanks her for her "doing her duty because her sisters deserve happiness"? What of Grace's happiness? Seriously, fuck that dude, you don't do that to someone you love. period.

This was so cute. Ollie was an absolute cinnamon roll and Grace’s sacrifices for her family were endearing, albeit difficult to understand in the twenty first century. This was short and sweet and had some of my favorite things (forced proximity (a hunting lodge during a storm), he takes care of her and hidden identity). It was predictable in the best ways.

I wanted a bit more from the ending/the conversation where they worked it out. A bit more explanation and a bit more back and forth before it was resolved. A bit more angst, perhaps. However, this is my second book by this author and I loved the other one as well so I’ll definitely be reading more.

I loved this book!
Grace is determined to help her family, even if it means marrying a wealthy gentleman in order for her sisters to be able to make their own advantageous matches.
But, in her determination to arrive early at a house party, her house throws her in the forest. Luckily, she is rescued. But will her heart survive the time spent recovering alongside her rescuer?
This was sweet, clean and just so fun. An excellent story that I couldn't put down.
Can't wait to read about Grace's sisters.

I loved, loved, loved this book! It held my interest right from the start! I stayed up late reading this one and didn’t regret it one bit. I loved the characters and loved the plot (mistaken identity is one of my favorite tropes).
There was plenty of humor, lots of Swoony moments and the ending was very satisfying. I would definitely recommend to my friends. I can’t wait for more from this author!

A gentle love story

This is a lovely, tender story. It is well written and a most enjoyable read. It is the story of a young lady who has been tasked by her family to marry to save her sisters from poverty. But she falls in love with a wonderful man who she understands is unable to give her the status and finances she needs. Her heart and her head are at odds. There are surprises ahead for her.

A clean story. I may have read this on the 1st of April, but this book is no April fool. It is an enjoyable gentle story, with no twists or machinations. I enjoyed how the romance developed between the two main characters. Was it apparent from early on how the story would unfold? Yes. Were there some Americanisms (checkers instead of draughts)? Yes. Did any of this detract? No. I really look forward to meeting the rest of the Campbell sisters in later books.

delightful

This is a delightful shortish read that is beautiful in the telling. Though there are glaring mistakes in it, for example, firstly the house party is only a few days away from starting then it is two weeks from starting. So yes it could have been proof read much better as there were also other smaller mistakes. But overall a sweet clean book no great drama, and a happily ever after of course.

Bounced back and forth between a 3 and 4.

The story itself was really cute and I did want to see where it went. I also enjoyed the main characters.

The writing, especially the dialogue, felt too modern and/or American. It was distracting and I even found myself adding and swapping out words in my mind that fit better and helped it feel more authentic to me.

Based on my enjoyment of the storyline and characters, I'll probably give another book by her a try, though.

Warning: The first 15% or so of this book is completely gag-able because of the syrupy-sweet, overly dramatic martyrdom of the protagonist. But, if you can push through that, the remainder of the story is quite good. I forced myself to finish the first couple chapters because I have loved other books by this author and also because I really wanted to get to the trapped-in-the-snowstorm part. And, my patience was rewarded.

I absolutely loved this book! It is a sweet romance of a young lady who needs to marry up to avoid marriage to a man twice her age. She has a plan to get the duke to marry her but falls for a man who rescues her in the woods. He also falls for her. The story line was intriguing and I couldn’t stop reading to see when it was revealed to her who the man was.

Pretty good

Ollie is wonderful. Grace's family situation is implausible. The time at the cottage was lovely, interesting, developing a good connection between the pair. But the last quarter of the book was predictable and didn't spark my interest. I skimmed to the happily ever after end. I'm hopeful for more in the next sister's story.

Lovely clean and longstanding read

Ollie and Grace's romance was very sweet. This was just a lovely low angst book. It isn't difficult to tell Ollie's secret identity after a certain point in the book, but that's okay because it foreshadows possible problems. I'd recommend this story to anyone who wants a sweet and clean regency romance.

Really good book!

Grace seems very submissive in the home of her family; but on the trip to a House Party, impatience takes her on a different route.
A winter storm, bucked from her horse, unconscious in the snow... What else could go wrong? Or maybe right.
I highly recommend this book!
