Act Like You Know (Updated)
The story is Alyx Cruz (a Latina) is in the sorority Beta Gamma Pi and she’s been getting some hate because the majority is African American. Alyx had to be transferred to Western Smith College because she was on scholarship at her last school but she partied to much and her GPA dropped. Alyx meets Malloy and some of the other BGP’s at a party (Torian, Loni, and Hayden). She gets the cold shoulder at first and has to assure them that she’s not there to take the spotlight, she pledged hard (and was hazed), and she wants to make a difference. They warm up a little to her after that.

The next morning, Malloy invites her to a meeting called by the National President. It’s not a good meeting. The chapter is suspended for taking a part in hazing (with Western has a strict policy against). She gives them a year to straighten up their acts and then she’ll revisit her decision. Two weeks pass and Alyx starts summer school at Western. Loni and Tori agree to let her live in their apartment. But what she doesn’t know is the guy she accepted a date with (Ronnie) was going out with Loni. This causes tension even tho Loni knows Alyx had no idea. (To her credit she immediately makes him leave). She still says they never should have let her live with them. Her messiness doesn’t help either. It also causes a riff between Loni and Tori-because Tori about it-.
Alyx immediately starts to pack. Tori tells her she doesn’t have to go. She thought Loni was over Ronnie. Alyx tells it was still foul to let Ronnie in and she should have known Loni wasn’t really over him. Loni tells her she doesn’t have to go either but she tells her she and Tori need to work it out. Mallory is going to NY to visit her boyfriend so she lets Alyx house sit. Her one rule is don’t let anyone come over. Since the Beta’s can’t have parties, they go to other sorra’s parties close by.

Bea, Trisha, and Alyx are going to one of these parties when Alyx wants to stop for snacks at a convenience store. Only none of them have money. Since she can’t flirt with the old, mean, white lady at the counter, Alex steals a pack of wine coolers, a bag of chips, and some candy. Bea and Trisha aren’t with it (and give her a lecture) but don’t turn down the snacks. Alyx one day decides to have a “study party” but too many people show up (with beer and weed) and tear up Malloy’s house. Alyx makes a half-ass attempt to stop them but then decides to join them instead. Of course, she comes home, gets pissed at Alyx, throws them out, and tells her she’s wasting her potential.

After the lashing, Alyx wants to leave but Malloy tells her to stay in the guest room. The next day she meets with all the other Beta’s who quickly let her know she’s a problem. She also meets with the Dean who tells her she’s failing the one class she’s taking and unless she can pull better than a C in the class she’s out. To make things even worse, Alyx’s mom calls and tells her she has a brain tumor and has 6 months to live-more or less-. This is when Malloy and she cry together and make up. Malloy tells her to stay -she doesn’t want to be alone- but no more parties.

Malloy tells the other sorra’s tho, and Alyx considers it a privacy breach. Still, she’s appreciative that they’re there and whatever issues between them days before are gone. Alyx meets with her tutor (Cody) and it gets off on the wrong foot. She’s attracted to him but thinks he’s kind of a jerk because he gets on her for being 5 minutes late. Still, she can’t deny the attraction but thinks twice about it when she thinks he’s staring at her but he’s just waiting for her to answer a question. She later sees him at another party, but Malloy tells her he’s off limits. He’s a sorra named Penelope’s man. Alyx tells her he’s just her tutor and nothings gonna happen with them, but Malloy sees the looks (from both) and warns her *that* can’t happen.

Malloy invites Loni, Tori, and Alyx to a NY Giants game but during the game Kade injuries his ankle badly. While Malloy stays to tend to him he gets two of his team mates to take the others out to a club. TJ and Onyx try to push up on Alyx to have a three sum with them later on and she plays along to get them to dance with Loni and Tori. In the meantime, Alyx lets some Mexican guys talk her into trying drugs and gets sick as a result. She wakes up and Malloy is there watching out for her. Malloy basically tells you have a second chance don’t **** it up (but it’s on you).
At a chapter meeting, Alyx explains “Roberts Rules of Order” when the sorras get out of hand and argue about whether they should throw a small party of not. She also says if the President says they can’t do they need to not do it and think about the future of the sorority and not jeopardize getting suspended permanently. The sorras all have to attend a workshop after this on how to solve problems and disagreements.

During their next tutoring session, Cody catches Alyx singing RESPECT and compliments her voice. Only she thinks he’s lying, He tells her he messes around with the keyboard a little bit and gives her an address and tells her to stop by tomorrow. When she does she sees it’s the campus theatre and there are a ton of people there trying out for a play. Alyx is surprised to find out not only is he on stage playing, he’s also directing the play. Cody is a theatre major and he tells Alyx he’s never seen someone with so much raw talent. He convinces her to stay and sing a song that *turns out* he wrote and composed. She murders the first verse but then messed up the second.

Noticing her sorra (Sharon) laughing at her, she goes over and confronts her. Sharon accuses her of trying to steal her role and trying to fit in where she doesn’t (in the sorority). When she runs out, Cody tries to tell her everyone messes up and Sharon is just intimidated, but she doesn’t run *this*. He tells her she’s better than that. Alyx tells him stop trying to pressure her but he says why would he do that with someone… Then he kisses her. When Alyx brings up Penelope he says they were together in undergrad school and Penelope wants to try it again but he didn’t see himself falling for her. Basically, Alyx tells him she doesn’t get down like that. She doesn’t steal parts or boyfriends from her sorras. And he tells her stop fronting on herself. She’s one hell of a woman. Alyx just walks away.

Over Thanksgiving, Kade and Alyx’s sorras give her some money to go home to attend her mom. She attends the third Gem ceremony about education but is surprised to find one of the girls didn’t make it for having the lowest GPA. She had the lowest GPA on her line, but the difference was she was accepted because she was Spanish. Right when she gets back, she’s called in to the Dean’s office. He tells her she’s improving but needs to be at a 3.0 in the spring. So, that means she really needs to ace her finals.

Cody leaves Alyx a note that says he can’t be her tutor anymore. She knows she needs him if she’s ever gonna get the B average. He agrees to continue to help her but only if she’ll be in the play. Sharon comes by to get in her face about it (and hopefully talk her into dropping out) but then her friend from El Paso (Pedro) calls and tells her (her) mom passed that morning. Alyx talks Malloy into borrowing her car so she can clear her head. (Although Sharon and Malloy don’t think this is such a good idea). Alyx goes to the liquor store and then to the parking lot of the theater.

She sees Penelope and Cody. At first, she’s all over him, but then he kind of shoos her away and walks off. So, Alyx follows him to his place and tries to come on to him. He pushes her off and tells her he needs to take a shower. Then they’ll talk and he’ll make her coffee, but she leaves. Because she leans down to pick up the liquor bottle she swerves and almost runs a woman and her baby off the road. The police show up. Alyx apologies to the lady (who was screaming and carrying on) and explains that her mom just died. Cody shows up just as Alyx is being arrested.

Mr. Malloy post Alyx’s bail. Malloy has a bag packed so she can go settle her mother’s affairs and Cody will drive her to El Paso. Alyx scatters her mom’s ashes over the Gulf of Mexico. Two weeks later, there’s a meeting. The sorrority comes up with two programs. One is being mentors to young girls and the other is study nights where they can all help each other (inspired by the tutoring Alyx is getting).

Alyx gets stuck with a girl that reminds her of herself (Ambrosia). At first, Ambrosia has the same kind of attitude that Alyx herself has. But then Alyx is able to break through when she can relate to Ambrosia about not passing English (Alyx tells her she’s this close to losing her scholarship), and being hated on and not having any friends (Alyx tells her people tend to judge her for being Hispanic and she’s has to get in where she fits in because her relatives aren’t from there). She says there’s this guy whose attention she can’t get. Alyx can’t relate on that but says she can help her get him.

Things go a little better after that. Ambrosia drops the attitude (like Alyx told her to) and she starts to open up to her more and work harder with her school work. One day, her mom calls and tells her she and Ambrosia had a hit and she physically hit her. Alyx finds her having sex with the guy and tries to tell her to have more respect for herself. She says it’s the only way she could get his attention and anyway what does she care. Her mother doesn’t care. Why should Alyx care? And this is what she wants to do. She doesn’t care if she’s talked about. As she walks away, Alyx starts to cry. Ambrosia sees this and why and Alyx says she sees herself in her. Ambrosia is so taken aback by this she promises Alyx she’ll tell her mom she loves her, continue to work hard in school, and leave boys alone.

Alyx starts to change. At a frat party she tells Malloy the party just isn’t where her heads at now. If it’s not about something that will help her growth in the future, it’s a waste of her time. At a slumber party afterwards, the National President tells the Beta’s there on the right track to get the chapter back active. Alyx tho isn’t doing so great memorizing her lines. She tells Cody its because she can’t see herself with the lead. He tells her them imagine someone fine that she can see herself with. She’s honest and says it’s him, but when he tries to kiss her and asks why he can’t be her man she pushes him away. She’s gotten used to being on her own. So, he gets pissed and drives her home. She says she won’t be apart of the play. He says they have an understudy but him wanting her to do the play doesn’t have anything to do with how he feels about her personally.

He says its clear they can’t be friends. She hurt him and she wants him to pretend she didn’t. So, she gets out the car and he drives away. When she goes out to eat with Malloy, she tells her this (“I thought it was because I needed time to appreciate me, but I think when I get down to it and I really look at what’s going on, I don’t want to depend on him. What if I add him to my world and then he leaves? How realistic is it that we’ll end up together? Seriously, I can see myself falling hard, and then what will I be left with when he finally wakes up and realizes I’m the last person who deserves to be in his life? I just can’t get pushed aside after having invested so much. So, before we can possibly get to that point, subconsciously I guess I squashed it.”)

There’s some more drama with Ronnie. Alyx goes to a club and Ronnie hits on her and is drunk. His boys have left him so she takes him home. The next day, Torian calls her accusing her of getting with Ronnie the night before. Alyx has to set her straight. Then she has to set him straight for lying on her. Alyx thinks about how she was forgiven by the lady who wrote a letter for her -that she almost hit- and the dumb mistakes she’s made-because of it she has two trials on the same day-. She tells him he’d better make it right with Loni. Also, Loni apologizes to her.

Sharon says she’ll help Alyx learn her lines when she’s pressured by the other cast who want to replace her. Cody also tries to replace her but Alyx asks for another chance. The Judge sentences her to 100 public service hours. The mentoring counts as well as any other service events the sorority does. She also has to take a six-week drunk-driving class and pay a fine of 150. Then there’s a 300.00 fee for the court case and jail time. Cody and Malloy show up for support. She gets her license suspended for 120 days as well. After this, Alyx and Cody get closer (and finally together) when he takes her fishing (to clear his mind over nerves from the big night of the play).
While at a sorority retreat, Alyx finds out she’s a point off from getting her minority scholarship back. Her sorras tho tell her they’ll do whatever it takes to help her (since she’s been helping all of them).

The opening night of the play is a success. The sorras want Alyx to come out with them to celebrate but she says she’d rather be with her man. She finds Cody backstage with Penelope in her embrace. But he explains it to her that she’d gotten an internship with the news and they’d been giving them advertising for the play for days. He says he wanted to thank her. He tells Penelope he’s sorry if she got the wrong idea but Alyx is his girl and sets any doubts in her mind clear that she’s not good enough once and for all.

Alyx says she loves being an actress. He says he loves her! Then she lets him do his thing and talk to all the people congratulating him. The chapter gets made active again. New officers are chosen (Malloy-president, Alyx- Vice President, Torian- Secretary, Loni- Treasurer). Alyx gives a passionate speech why they should get the chapter back. Cody tells Alyx Broadway wants his play and there’s a foundation he’s found out that will give her a one year scholarship for the Arts.

My Thoughts
This was a really good book. It had strong characters. Even tho Alyx was a minority in an African-American sorority, she didn’t let the other Beta’s intimidate her. She made mistakes throughout the whole book, but she was tough and eventually she got it together. (Although it was frustrating to see her messing up over and over and over). But you could see her heart was in the right place. She was just struggling. Since I’ve been to college, I can understand that. What I loved was that she was a fighter and that she really wanted to get her life together. You could really see her growth. I loved how she stepped up her game and helped the other BGP’s get things organized. I can relate to her the strongest when she saw all her sorras partying and having a good time but by this point she was over it and ready to do what she had to do to get somewhere series.

Then there were the Beta’s. At first, they struck me as judgmental, but they really did prove themselves to be more. No matter how angry they got with Alyx when she needed them, they put everything else aside and were right there by her side and each other’s. And I loved Cody because it’s so desirable to see a man that doesn’t walk way easily. Tho, I could really relate also to the reason Alyx gave Malloy of why she was scared to be his girlfriend. I know I would feel that way. Alyx reminds me of a character in another book series called TODAYS GIRLS. Actually, she could be the same girl years later. They have the same attitude, similar backgrounds. The only difference is the way their names are spelled. *Come to think of it there was another Alex in TWITCHES that had a chip on her shoulder and was from a poor background with a mother that got sick and died. (What is it about the name Alex?)

Some other thoughts I had were, I just don't see the big deal about an African American founded sorority extending itself to females of other races. if someone that's Latin upheld the goals, had the character, and had the heart for the sisterhood I don't think their racial background should matter. I think it's bigger than that. It's more about women coming together and putting the race thing aside. I don't know which is worse the Betas not accepting her because she's Spanish or the Beta's letting her in just because she's Spanish.

Ambrosia's part is touching. Even though when I was in my teenage years back then I guess I was more Alyx than Ambrosia I can relate today about insecurity and how it feels to think you aren’t worthy enough, or overlooked and sometimes it makes you defensive and have an attitude with the world. I get that! So, I understood Ambrosia. And I hurt for her just like Alyx did.

This is GREAT novel with a strong message about growth! We all make stupid mistakes in life, but this book shows that we have the ability to mature and let those mistakes be a part of our growth process. It also teaches that no matter how difficult situations are we should turn to God and that he hears us and encourages us to have faith. It shows us to keep believing no matter what we're faced with. It also shows the importance of having the right people in our lives. It taught self-love and to have respect for ourselves as women. This series started out average for me but after this one, I was willing to see the series out.

My term book is a teen drama that talks about a girl who has a rough few days in college. “Act Like You Know” by Stephanie Perry Moore is a very entertaining book. When you read the book you can imagine all the things that are happening in it. This book is about a girl named Alyx who gets into some trouble her first few weeks of college.
Alyx starts off by joining the Beta Gamma Pi sorority. She has her fun but when they were heading to a party she started to act up again. She was supposed to “buy” drinks but instead stole them and dragged two of her roommates into the mess. Honestly this part of the book kind of made me upset because I felt like I already predicted she was going to get into this mess. It was a predictable chapter so I kind of wish the author switched it up a little.
This book was pretty fun to read. It had some twists and turns but most of the book was a little predictable. I would recommend this book to a freshman in high school and only to upperclassmen if they are looking for a fun book to read.

Alyx cruz is a college girl who struggles to do her school work and at the same time have fun. Alyx is in a sorority group called Beta Gamma Pi, and she becomes good friends after a while with all the girls. After a not so good semester for her, she receives bad news from her mom who is in Texas. Alyx also finds out her scholarship is on the line so she looks for help and she gets a tutor named Cody Foxx. He really helps Alyx to get her act together both in school and in her personal life.

It was touching and very unique but not as good as "Work what you got" and "The way we roll"
