Ash and embers

This book was so disappointing for me. I enjoyed the first book so much, Oberon was a fantastic villain, and I was really wanting Tessa to overcome everything the was being dealt. This book felt like it was being written by an entirely different author. And there are major plot holes that a never addressed. For example, her sister is killed in the first book and then suddenly she’s alive in this book! The solution was “oh that was somebody that looked like your sister that Oberon beheaded to scare you.” I’m sorry but I don’t think anyone would get confused on what their sister looks like in a moment like that. There’s tons of stuff like that. And ultimately it just feels like character whiplash, like the author was trying to redeem every character. I will not be reading the third book.

After how completely devastated I was when I found out the second book wasn't out yet, this book was so wildly disappointing. I agree with other reviewers-the pacing was so weird, it was super repetative- yes. We cannot let the gods return. Doom and gloom. But NOTHING HAPPENED for like 8 chapters. Lets have a ball! This guy threatened my fuckbuddy! I decapitated him! And then the characters are like, well that didn't go well... no shit? I just can't. Nellies character was annoying. "I can't tell you you have to remember on your own!" ...wow...

Let me sum this entire book up: tessa and kalen are back together, mom is wack and gets eaten by a pooka, killing oberon while hes wearing the necklace also destroyed the necklace, and kalen went poof. Thats it. That is literally all that happened in this ENTIRE book.

I think this series really had potential as I liked the world building, plot, MMC but I was confused after reading this second book what it was missing for me.

And I think its that even after reading the second book of the series I had a lot of trouble connecting to the FMC. Now she DID get better from being incredibly annoying in book 1, but I still myself drifting away from this series without that connection.

I wish these books engaged me more. The story has some unique aspects with popular tropes and all the things I love about Romantasy. I should love this series.

The first two books are both fine stories, and I would recommend them because I know they’re enjoyable, but they just don’t knock it out of the park for me.

I think the characters are where I’m struggling. I feel like I could pick them up and put them in any fantasy romance story and they’d fulfill their function. They just don’t seem made for this world or that this is their story. There’s also a lack of tension between Tessa and Kal, so while they play out all these popular tropes, I don’t feel the action between them.

The first book in this series was very enjoyable, and had a lot of unique aspects I loved. However, this second book has a lot of issues. The pacing feels way off, and it almost feels like a different author wrote this book. Maybe the idea for the plot changed in between the books but this book created a lot of inconsistencies and plot holes with the series so I don’t think I will be picking up the next release in the series due to this. Not a bad book, but just not what I was expecting after the first.

Mind blowning

The excitement I felt when I saw that this had been delivered to my kindle is something I can’t put into words (literally 😜). Jenna finished the first book with a major cliffhanger and I was desperate to know what was going to happen and WOW!!!!!! I was not expecting that 😳
I loved every second of it. We got a more detailed look into Tessa’s past as well as Kalens and there were so many twists that I did not see coming, which I love in a book. As soon as I finished it I pre-ordered the third and final instalment ‘of night and chaos’. I hope that it all works out for them both 🤞🤞cannot wait to see where it all goes. If you like high fantasy and books about Fae, then you HAVE to read this. It’s fast paced the whole way through and full of interesting characters and plot twists.

Nell’epilogo del precedente romanzo avevamo lasciato la protagonista nei guai .
Tessa, infatti, era stata scelta come sposa da Oberon, il crudele re dei fae della luce e, nel tentativo di sottrarsi al matrimonio, era fuggita attraversando la misteriosa nebbia che segna il confine del mondo in cui la giovane ha sempre vissuto.
Oltre la bruma, era finita prigioniera di Kalen, un fae d’ombra, monarca del regno confinante con Albyria, da tutti considerato un essere potentissimo con inclinazioni sadiche e crudeli.
Superata l’iniziale diffidenza reciproca, tuttavia, Tessa aveva riconosciuto nel bel sovrano ben altre caratteristiche e proprio quando un dolce legame stava sbocciando tra i due, la giovane era finita in una trappola di Oberon, ritrovandosi incarcerata insieme alla sua famiglia.
Fenici, il primo libro mi aveva lasciata con parecchi interrogativi e dubbi, che solo in parte in questo nuovo capitolo vengono sciolti.
Il pov alternato e i vari flashback incontrati nel corso della narrazione mi hanno aiutata a colmare alcune lacune e a comprendere qualche aspetto caratteriale dei protagonisti, ma, nonostante ciò, ci sono alcuni elementi della storia che continuano a non prendermi o a convincermi poco.
Partiamo dalla protagonista: Tessa fa scoperte importanti, affronta situazioni difficili, eppure in lei non c’è mai un’evoluzione netta o un cambiamento importante. Il suo personaggio, a mio parere, non cresce mai, divenendo, a un certo punto, quasi piatto. Le sue emozioni non vengono approfondite, sono spesso liquidate con due paroline e accantonate anche di fronte a situazioni di notevole impatto. È protagonista, giustamente, in ogni situazione, ma la sua personalità, quell’interiorità che dovrebbe portare il lettore a fraternizzare con lei, è molto superficiale.
Anche nello svolgimento della narrazione c’è confusione in alcune dinamiche e avvenimenti.
Ci sono colpi di scena davvero sorprendenti, assolutamente poco prevedibili, che però ti lasciano meravigliato fino al punto di chiederti “aspetta! Cosa ho appena letto?”.
Gli eventi ,infatti, spesso non hanno una giustificazione che aiuti a comprendere i cambi di rotta repentini e mentre il più grande nemico diventa quasi una povera anima da compatire, ti ritrovi a domandarti come sia possibile che accada una cosa del genere senza praticamente “sbugiardare” tutto ciò che è accaduto fino a quel momento, tutto ciò che ha portato i personaggi a quel preciso punto.
Altra pecca, a mio parere, si trova nella fluidità. Spesso si salta da un avvenimento all’altro senza nessuna coesione e questo influisce negativamente sulla scorrevolezza della lettura.
Inoltre, i co-protagonisti in questo secondo libro vengono completamente dimenticati, divenendo solo personaggi di fondo, mentre nel precedente romanzo il cameratismo tra Kalen e la sua guardia era stato un punto fermo e interessante della storia.
Dunque, a parer mio, vi è un bel potenziale, una trama avvincente con un mondo immaginario ben costruito e presentato, ma tutto ciò non basta a mascherare un’esposizione un po’ ridondante e protagonisti non totalmente convincenti.
Continuerò di sicuro la lettura della serie, curiosa di scoprire cosa ne sarà di Kalen e Tessa, sperando di poter dissipare tutti i miei dubbi.

Boring. Repetitive of the previous book with minimal plot. I skipped many of the parts in the second half and still missed no major events. I won’t be reading the next book, which is sad because the story had so much potential to be great.

WOOOO this book ended too soon. 😂 that cliffhanger hurt. This was an incredible follow up book to the first, Of Mist and Shadow.

Jenna came through with this book. A lot of times I struggle to stay invested in middle/follow up books but I feel she did an awesome job with pacing in this story to keep me invested and intrigued! There was more POV chapters in this one of others, and I thought it added a lot to the story.

This book had me gasping with the new info drops/plot twists. I don’t wanna spoil anything, just know I was out here like that surprised cat meme going 😱😱😱 on that Crone vision scene lmao

I loved that we got to learn more about the history of this world, what lead to it being the way it is, etc.

The more I read about Kalen, the more I simped for his butt. I love that Fae so much. 😭

Tessa is STRONG and determined, courageous and never ever gives up. I was so proud of her and her growth in this book. 🥹

The side characters added depth to the story, I love Kalen’s connection with his team. It’s so wholesome and genuine.

I still cannot get over the ending. What?! Like… WHAT?! I need answers. So many answers. I’m so scared, but so excited for the next book!! Here is me shouting into the misty void to be gifted access to an arc when they become available. 🙏 😂🖤

First finished book of 2025! This was good….I am just finding a major problem with the pacing. It feels like some things are drawn out for no real reason or value add. Also you could take out big chunks of it and it would still be the same story.

Hmm we will see how the next goes and if it resolves any of those issues.

“Books are the boards beneath our feet. Without them, we risk wading in mud.” This is exactly how this book made me feel! I read close to 100 books a year and this is one of those authors that keep me coming back for more. I absolutely loved the journey Tessa is on to learn more about her past, how she learns to trust (and even love) again. Kalen also has his journey to come to terms with his past and how his future is shaped. The camaraderie between Kal and his Mist Guard is a family. I melted with each conversation Toryn and Tessa had with Kal about having his back and not leaving him alone while he continued to battle with his powers. Every time Kalen called Tessa “love”, I would swoon along with her. The reveals in this book had me on the edge of my seat and I love when books can keep me surprised and not figure out the plot. Needless to say, I am so excited for the next book as night and chaos take over! Excellent job Jenna!!

I liked getting the additional POVs and flashbacks in this book. It was nice to experience what happened to the characters vs someone just telling or explaining.

The spice kicked up a bit in this one as was promised. I’m still so obsessed with Kalen. There were a few times his lines were a little cheesy (which usually I don’t mind, so maybe I’m just having an off couple of days) but when a man says, “I love the way my name sounds on your tongue. But it’s your moans I’m most desperate to hear,” I’m hooked in.

Questo secondo volume mi è piaciuto meno del secondo. Parto, però, da quello che ho apprezzato.

Mi è piaciuto che sin da subito venisse risolto il malinteso fra i protagonisti, detesto le storie che portano fino allo stremo i patemi d’animo, soprattutto a causa del miss communication (odio il MC!)
Sebbene non mi piaccia per nulla il personaggio di Oberon, non immaginavo in alcun modo la verità dietro il cambio di moglie e ho letto con interesse il flashback sul suo passato. Certo, l’ho trovato anche molto ingenuo in alcuni punti (due adulti che non si conoscono, passeggiano per parlare degli accordi fra i loro regni e all’improvviso si raccontano sogni e speranze come fossero ragazzini che pensano a cosa faranno da grandi), ma le mie teorie non si erano neanche avvicinate a quella verità. È stato un bellissimo colpo di scena! E dopo aver letto tutto il retroscena, moltissime cose si sono chiarite. Prima fra tutti la scelta di attendere un mese per il matrimonio con Tessa. Mi sono sempre chiesta perché, che senso avesse. Ed ecco il perché! Da questo punto di vista la storia non mi ha delusa. Come nel primo volume, spesso arrivano spiegazioni che rendono plausibile ciò che prima lasciava dubbi.
Mi è dispiaciuto molto per Morgan. Anche se all’inizio non ho empatizzato con questo personaggio, scoprire la verità su di lei e il suo destino è stato davvero straziante. C’erano delle cose che non capivo di lei che hanno trovato il loro perché.
Il finale è stato molto interessante, con un gran bel colpo di scena. Più o meno avevo immaginato come sarebbero andate le cose, ma sono stata stupita dall’effettiva resa della scena. Quello che accade nelle ultime pagine ha una doppia lama, in particolare mette la protagonista in una bruttissima situazione. Certo, è quello che pensa lei, dato che le dinamiche dell’accaduto non comprendevano il “volere” di Tessa, tuttavia avrebbe molto senso. Io spero di no, perché allora sarebbero dolori che mi risparmierei volentieri, ma chissà… la storia spesso mi sorprende. Quindi attendo di essere sorpresa.

Parlando di ciò che non mi ha convinta.
Sebbene l’inizio non cali di tensione, anzi aggiunga alla separazione situazioni di pericolo sia per l’uno che per l’altra, ciò che ha reso la storia pesante sono stati anzitutto i flashback. 8 su 10 erano del tutto inutili, oltre che lunghi. Ciò che viene raccontato all’interno di questi capitoli o non ha rilevanza narrativa (se non sottolineare cose che già si sapevano, tipo che Tessa se l’è passata male al villaggio a causa della tirannia dei fae) oppure viene poi riproposto nella storyline principale, quindi anticipazioni o ennesime ripetizioni. Soltanto un paio sono stati effettivamente utili, perché fornivano un retroscena che per essere d’impatto aveva bisogno di essere vissuto e non solo ricordato.
Qui appaiono anche i pov di altri personaggi. Come sopra, la maggior parte li ho trovati inutili. Non solo mi sono apparsi dei riempitivi, ma non avevano una struttura logica all’interno della storia. Di tanto in tanto a narrare non erano più i protagonisti. Stop. Pov inseriti così a caso per me sono dei deus ex machina utili solo a fornire dettagli difficili da inserire con la narrazione scelta all’inizio.

Fra le tante cose che non mi sono quadrate, perché mettere Tessa nella stessa cella della sorella? Come mai Oberon è stato così buono? Per un po’ ho pensato che Nellie fosse stata plagiata con il compito di riferire a Oberon le confidenze della sorella. E invece no. Il re spietato si scopre compassionevole riunendole. Mah. Stesso discorso per Morgan che porta cose buone da mangiare alle prigioniere. Posso capire nutrire come si deve Tessa, ma le altre? La madre e l’amica soprattutto non contano nulla. E invece Oberon, pur sapendo che Morgan va spesso da loro, la lascia fare. Per carpire informazioni non era necessario far arrivare la cioccolata o i libri a Nellie. Rispetto alla situazione oscura del primo volume, qui alcune volte mi è sembrato tutto un po’ troppo permissivo.

La fuga dal castello mi ha lasciata perplessa. Tutto sta andando a fuoco e voi restate a guardare il fumo? Avevano già deciso cosa fare, ma poi ancora fra le mura incendiate si mettono a bisticciare su dove andare. Oltre al fatto che i tempi sono stati davvero dilatati, troppo per un luogo che potrebbe crollare da un momento all’altro e con il rischio che le guardie impediscano la fuga.

Attendevo la scena hot, ma avrei preferito non leggerla. Purtroppo si vede lontano un miglio quando c’è qualcosa di forzato, quando si cerca di essere sensuali e invece si scelgono le frasi sbagliate. Mai in questo contesto mi sarei aspettata la classica frase da bad boy esaltato: “Ti piace quello che vedi?” Per non parlare di quando partono le frasi filosofiche sull’universo. Mi ha ricordato Crescent City e i voli mentali sul sotto che diviene sopra, bianco e nero, stelle che implodono… Se al primo posto non sopporto il linguaggio troppo volgare, al secondo ci metto gli amplessi che li fanno sembrare dei drogati. Qui non siamo assolutamente al livello di CC, ma comunque non è stato dei miei gusti.
Parlando sempre della storia d’amore, l’ho trovata molto sbilanciata. Kalen la chiama “amore” ed è palese quello che prova per lei, mentre Tessa è fredda né presta attenzione all’importanza che ricopre per lui. Anche la gentilezza che le ha mostrato durante la loro prima volta si è persa nell’etere come se non contasse. E sì che non ci si innamora nello stesso momento, quindi ci sta che lui sia più preso, ma lei è parsa solo interessata, nulla di più.

Sono rimasta parecchio stralunata dai ricordi di bambina di Tessa. Scopriamo che più volte è stata costretta a vivere momenti di terrore e mi sono domandata com’è stato possibile che da adulta fosse così equilibrata mentalmente se a 6 anni piangeva terrorizzata per quello che le veniva fatto. Okay, ha scordato, ma inconsciamente tutto quell’orrore avrebbe dovuto creare qualcosa. Se non un disturbo, almeno diffidenza nel prossimo, difficoltà ad aprirsi, terrore apparentemente ingiustificato quando si avvicinava al luogo incriminato. Nel flashback di lei bambina ho sentito tutta la sua paura, un capitolo fatto davvero bene, e provato una gran pena quando la piccolina si concentrava per ottenere ciò che volevano da lei senza riuscirci. Quello che le è stato fatto avrebbe dovuto generare un trauma enorme. Per questo ho faticato a credere nel personaggio come prima. Per me non era più adatto al suo percorso.

La storia di base resta molto interessante, con sviluppi che stupiscono e dettagli inseriti con sapienza. Tuttavia, se alla conclusione del primo volume mi sono buttata subito nel secondo, ora non ho lo stesso interesse verso il terzo. Lo leggerò sicuramente, ma non so quando. Continuo a essere del parere che, nonostante tutto, sia fra i romantasy meglio costruiti che ho letto. Tagliando i flashback e le varie ripetizioni, la lettura per me sarebbe stata molto più godibile.

This book has to be a build up for the next because that’s the only excuse I’ll give for how annoyed I am at this book.

Yes it’s a feel good read but the story was all over the place. Some parts jenna should have been more descriptive and other parts she should have brought a down a notch.

I love Tessa but she also pisses me off because she keeps getting herself in trouble

Oberon was a great villain in the first book and then just died down in this one when we found out that it was Bellicent the entire time. Now she’s our villain? Or the gods?

I’m anticipating for the next book to be better especially how this one finished

I wanted to like this book more than I did. I enjoyed the first and was excited to see where this would go with Kalen coming back.

It took me longer to read this one because I was so bored until halfway through. I was surprised with the whole Oberon and Bellicent thing but it made him less appealing as a villain? Not much happened for awhile and I just wasn’t sucked into it like I thought I’d be. Nellie was annoying as shit not telling Tessa about her childhood?? Tf sis?

I wish it was more descriptive, some things just seemed rushed or not thought out enough when I feel they could have been more thorough. But I’m hoping the third book is more exciting!!

I'm definitely disappointed with this one. I was so excited after reading the first book and couldn't wait for this one, but it felt like a letdown. I couldn't engage with the main characters anymore, and the plot felt like it took a weird turn compared to Mist and Shadow. I tried so hard to get back to it because I was determined to finish it, but I couldn't convince myself.

3 stars because at least the beginning was okay 🤷‍♀️

Honestly, Tessa grew on me, and I think it's the authors writing that got better. The story was so much quicker paced and just great second book. Did not see that ending and can't wait to dive into book 3!
