A decent but brief and sometimes scattered history of the University District, the neighborhood to the west of the University of Washington main campus.
Really, there were just a few drawbacks to this book. One, it sometimes felt like Nielsen was glossing over events too quickly, as if there were a shortage of space and thus he was forced to describe something in one sentence, then move on to the next event, which was also covered in just one sentence. The other drawback is that it became quite obvious in his writing when we got to events that occurred while he was connected with the U District. The style suddenly shifted from reporting to memoir-like, with lots of "I did..." and "I was..." and other comments about his thoughts and reactions to events or how he was connected to them. Still, though, this is the only history I've found specifically about the U District, and there are a lot of really good pictures from the late 1800s on, so I can overlook those issues. I just wish there were a more in-depth history of the neighborhood. (Plus, even though the book was published in 1986, the description of events end at 1973 -- odd.)
