Following the success of HOCKEY 365, author Mike Commito put together a book focused solely on the Toronto Maple Leafs featuring three hundred and sixty five different stories; one for each day of the year.

The obvious appropriate response from any Leafs fan following the release of HOCKEY 365 is “OK, that’s great; now do one on us alone.” Would there be enough there for an entire book? While the franchise is over one hundred years old, was there really something interesting that happened every single day of the year, even during the dog days of summer? Turns out yes, there was always something worth writing about.

Commito goes through all the trades, free agent signing, milestone nights and thrilling games throughout the club’s rich history. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows though, there’s more than enough heartbreak to go around. Did you know the Leafs have never played a game in the month of June (although they did come close in 2021)? Even those fourteen times they won the Cup, the tournament was well over before the summer arrived. How about the night Doug Gilmour knotted six points against the Minnesota North Stars in a 6-1 clobbering? Did you know he had pea soup and a tuna fish sandwich for dinner?

This was a fun read that I will definitely return to in the future, if only to enhance my trivial knowledge about my favorite team.

People like making fun of the Toronto Maple Leafs. They point to the fact the Leafs won their last Stanley Cup in 1967, and ever since then the Leafs fall in the spring. You love them or hate them according to die-hard fans, but if you want something to love about Toronto Maple Leafs, you just have to pick up the book, LEAFS 365 DAILY STORIES FROM THE ICE.
Author Mike Commito has done many other 365 books about facets of the game of hockey, and teams within it. But with his latest, he offers 365 stories that Leafs fans will find of interest. There is pretty well one a day if you go by the calendar, though because 2024 is a Leap Year, you are missing an extra one, but let’s not nitpick as they say.
The stories are of interest to Leafs’ nation, such as January 1 2014, it mentions the teams playing an outdoor game as part of the Winter Classic in Michigan Stadium, which is known as the Big House. 105,491 people saw the game in the bitter chill on New Year’s Day that year where they faceds the Detroit Red Wings. The Leafs eventually won in a shoot-out.
There are stories of older Leafs players and newer one throughout the book. On May 6 1936, the Leafs acquired Turk Broda. They paid $8000 for him, which at the time was a record amount for a minor league player. He went on to become a star goalie for them, winning a Vezina Trophy twice, and playing for ten years for the team. He was an All-Star twice, and helped Leafs win the Stanley Cup five times.
Other items of note happened on April 25 1964. That was the year the Leafs won the Stanley Cup for the third straight time. Just turn to any page, and it will highlight some part of Leafs history. Whether it was April 15 1998 when Tie Domi sets single season penalty record, March 21 1994 when Mike Gartner was traded to the Leafs, or September 19 1991, when Leafs acquired Grant Fuhr, there was something of note, even if it was quite trivial.
So Leafs fans looking for a winner will find it here, a book that tells the good, the bad and the ugly, of Leafs’ history through the years.

What a fun read!! And yes I finished it early!

This is such a fun collection of stories, one for each day of the year, sharing what important or fun thing happened on each day. I love the Leafs and have been a fan for most of my life but only more seriously lately. It was great to see the names that I recoginized and learn some facts about the Leafs past. It is a completely accessible read with just a quick page each day!!

This is a must read if you're a Leafs fan. For someone that grew up in the 90s, it was nice to relive those great playoff memories as well as learn about the history of the Leafs long before I was born. The amount of research that has gone into this book must have been insane and it's written in an easy to digest style that makes for quick reading.
