Your best hope to make it through the hour of the wolf.

Ex-priest Travis Dominick and former FBI agent Brent Lawson hunt demons, monsters, and supernatural troublemakers. When Brent gets a call for help from an old army buddy, he and Travis head to a small central Pennsylvania town beset by a series of unexplainable deaths and escalating paranormal activity. The murders mimic crimes from decades past, down to the smallest detail, and as Travis and Brent battle vengeful entities, rumors surface that shady government experiments helped make a bad situation even worse.

Torrential rain and rising rivers mean there's no escaping the creatures hunting the shadows, beings that take shape from people's deepest fears and feed on their terror. With the lives of everyone in South Fork at stake, Brent and Travis face their toughest case yet. They'll have to confront the town's dark secrets, the legacy of a covert supernatural psi-ops program, and their own painful memories to battle a bloodthirsty ancient creature and fight the deadly spirits that roam the night.

C.H.A.R.O.N. is a dark urban fantasy thrill ride filled with Old World spirits, legends and lore, vengeful ghosts, magic, secret government agencies, Vatican ninja-priests, found family, small-town secrets, badass bartenders, psychics, mediums, witches, small-town heroes, and an unshakable bond of friendship.

Travis Dominick is an X-Priest, and his creature hunting partner, Brent Lawson is an ex-FBI agent. Together they make up the bad-ass team that hunts demons, monsters, and other supernatural troublemakers. Brent gets a call for help from an old army buddy, so he and Travis head to central Pennsylvania. The town is experiencing strange and really gruesome and unexplained deaths by demonic creatures that are taking the paranormal activity to a new level. The murders are similar to crimes that took place decades ago. These creatures aren't bad enough, so let's throw in a shady government experiment that, as can be expected...make the bad situation even worse. Imagine that! Constant rain and overflowing rivers mean there's no way to escape the creatures from the shadows of Hell. The creatures are found to be the results of people's deepest fears and thoughts. They literally feed on human terror. With the lives of everyone in the town at stake, Brent and Travis are their only hope. They'll have to uncover the dark secrets, which includes the secret supernatural government program, as well as Brent and Travis's own not so pleasant memories. C.H.A.R.O.N. is a dark fantasy filled with old world spirits, legends and lore. Add some vengeful ghosts, magic, secret government agencies, Vatican ninja-priests, family, small-town secrets, grouchy but helpful bartenders, psychics, mediums, witches, small-town heroes, and an unshakable bond of friendship, then mix well and you have the recipe for a scary, creepy, well told tale that just may have you leaving the lights on at night. What more could you ask for? I have met these two heroes, Brent and Travis, before as they have made appearances in other series of books authored by Gail Z, Martin that she writes as Morgan Brice. She's one of my favorite authors and her books are some of my always go-to rereads. "Badlands", "Witchbane", and "Deadly Curiosities" have hosted these two characters, many times as they come to the assistance of the main characters of these books. Gail Z. Martin, a.k.a. Morgan Brice is a wonderful author that gives life to Brent and Travis as well as their many friends.

Ex-priest Travis Dominick and former FBI agent and ex-military soldier Brent Lawson are called to a small town in Pennsylvania by a fellow ex-soldier and friend of Lawson. The town is cursed with people subject to unexplainable and gruesome deaths. After arriving there, Travis and Brent constantly see shadowy creatures that later start attacking them. Can they unravel the mystery behind these attacks before the entire town is wiped out?

“C.H.A.R.O.N.” is the second book of the NIGHT VIGIL series by prolific author Gail Z Martin and is part of the shared world of DEADLY CURIOSITIES, FOX HOLLOW, BADLANDS, and WITCHBANE series. Martin writes the NIGHT VIGIL and DEADLY CURIOSITIES series under the name Gail Z Martin and FOX HOLLOW, BADLANDS, and WITCHBANE series (only to name a few), which feature strong LGBTQ characters under the pen name Morgan Brice. Still, they all exist in this shared paranormal universe filled with witches, psychic mediums, monster hunters, and even vampires. Each series primarily takes place in its own corner of the US, and the tone for each is equally diverse as the characters that make them up.

The NIGHT VIGIL series has Travis Dominick and Brent Lawson as its protagonists. Travis is an ex-priest and served in a Black Ops organization for the Vatican called the Sinistram. Brent did much the same with the US military and was connected to a group called C.H.A.R.O.N., which can be thought of as a highly corrupt Men-In-Black. Their motives are shady at best, and to date, there is not much known about them. We have met a couple of people attached to them. Still, C.H.A.R.O.N. itself remains somewhat enigmatic, including its role regarding the monstrous troubles the town of South Fork, Pennsylvania, is experiencing.

One of the great things about the books written by Martin (or those under her pen name Brice) is the easy accessibility to each. While “C.H.A.R.O.N.” is the second book of the NIGHT VIGIL series, there is no serious need to read the first book (“Sons Of Darkness”) to appreciate the story being told here fully. There are some points of trivia, but Martin has a wonderful way of filling in the gaps from past stories that neither disrupt the flow of the story narrative nor have to resort to info-dump. It had been quite some time since I read “Sons Of Darkness” (and had also read other books from her since), but I was able to fall right back with the exploits of Travis and Brent.

Martin has this special way of writing engaging characters while delivering thrilling pacing to her story. With the growing cast of characters she has created for this paranormal world, she has given each of them a unique voice that instantly identifies them to the reader. There is never any confusion with these different players. Their personalities are consistent within their own books and even remain so if they crossover into someone else’s story. As for the story, Martin is one of those incredible writers who researches the settings and plot points to perfection. Here, she provides the perfect amount of information that makes the story come alive in the reader’s mind. Each of her novels has done this, but reading “C.H.A.R.O.N.” almost felt as if this could have been a made-for-TV-movie-of-the-week. The suspense is nerve-wracking, and the elements of horror are indeed horrifying. As I read this, I could feel the impending sense of doom if our heroes didn’t solve the mystery in time, as well as sense the ticking clock as they were quickly beginning to run out of time—all these elements made for a nearly cinematic effect while reading this latest story. I could see it in my mind as easily as watching a movie on a big screen.

It has been four years since “Sons Of Darkness,” but jumping into “C.H.A.R.O.N.” felt like no time had passed between books. That is the strength of Martin’s writing. She continues to be one of those authors where I will drop everything just to read her latest thrilling story. Even after reading it once, the strength of the entire story makes it re-readable while continuing to get enjoyment out of it, despite already knowing the outcome. As with her other works, “C.H.A.R.O.N.” is a fun and exciting book to read!

I give “C.H.A.R.O.N.” 4.5 out of 5 Pieces of Coal.

I definitely enjoyed this book more than the first one. I am guessing that is due to the first book having the men at odds. Basically, they were having a ruler contest and both looked childish, Brent especially. CHARON (whose name totally reminded me of Agents of SHIELD where Ward says, It means someone really wanted our initials to spell out "S.H.I.E.L.D.".) is an odd name for the book since there was little interaction with them. I am surprised the Gail hasn’t written another book for this series. There is so much to be mined (no pun intended). I would like to hear more about Travis’ Night Vigil group. The Easter eggs are neat. I haven’t read the Deadly Curiosities series yet, but I have read some short stories which take place in that universe. I have read all of the Mark Wojcik and Joe Mack books. I had been awhile since we had new ones of those as well. Gail has so many series to take of (both as Gail and as Morgan Bride) that it is no wonder there are large gaps between the books. E-books have us spoiled. It used to be normal for sequels to have years between them. I look forward to the next adventure.

I wanted to add a small detail that was erroneous. At one point Brent talks about having been out of the army for 5 years. He then states that during those 5 years he was FBI and then a cop. That isn’t enough time between jobs. It doesn’t look good to have that many jobs in that short amount of time. Not to mention going from FBI to local cop is a demotion of sorts. It was a throw-away line that really shouldn’t have been included.

Gail Z. Martin hits the ground running in this urban fantasy mixed with plenty of action and mystery! Ex-priest Travis Dominick and former FBI agent and ex-military soldier Brent Lawson are back, this time trying to save a small mining town from a supernatural menace (or two). Martin always includes folk horror elements, which I love, and this time it’s a Shubin from Ukrainian folklore (“a mine spirit that often appears as an old man in a fur coat who walks the deepest tunnels”) – along with shadowy tulpas (hints of Twin Peaks) and hungry ghosts. My favorite urban fantasy character, Simon Kincaide from the Badlands series written by Martin under the pen name Morgan Brice, makes a cameo appearance to help Travis and Brent solve the supernatural mysteries. Highly recommended!

Oh my!! this was mind blowing!!! I loved it , really loved it even without having read book 1(which i must read now!

Travis and Brent are demons hunters, protectors, bad ghosts hunters and a lot more. Coming from different background but both having special talents and knowing the supernatural world existed they decided to team together to fight and protect....
So when an ancient military buddy of Brent calls him in hope he can help when strange murders and occurences happen in his town, Brent accepts even if he is still recovering and he bring Travis with him because if Brent is more the muscles part, Travis is the one with more knowledge and power. They don't know what they are going to discover, they don't know if they will be able to do anything but they want to try.

I loved how Brent and Travis are interacting, they have become friends and even more like brothers even if they don't want to admit it...Both were deeply hurt and disappointed in the past from who they thought had their back, were allies so the reconstruction is slow, slower even for some.
They are a formidable team and i loved they did not hesitate to ask for help when needed. We do learn from some of their allies ( actual ones) and ,if you have read other series from the author like " deadly curiosities", you will be happy to recognize some like Chuck (even by phone he is still so great and funny when grumpy) or Simon.
I love when series are linked that way: if you are new to the author you are not missing anything it's perfectly explained and making sense even without prior reading . if you have already something else, you will glimpse some links, connection that will make you smile and have a deeper understanding of the series'unverse. It's just perfect

This is a really great urban fantasy with some horror elements but also humour, lot of different magic ( some unusual one) , myths and great characters that work as stand alone but you will love it so much you may want to discover books you missed.

Wowza

Talk about high action and octane! This one was full tilt, between the paranormal entities and the crazy weather, Travis and Brent have their hands full with South Fork PA. I love the stories and characters that this author weaves and they kicked it up a notch with this one.

Brent is still reeling from losing contact with his brother, Danny’s ghost, and continuously telling CHARON ‘not no but h3ll no!’ when this call comes in from an old Army buddy. Travis and he jump in the Crown Vic and head straight down, even while the bruises from their most recent fight are still changing colors.
Heavy rains, sinkholes, the Wolfman and cat creatures, oh my! This is a story of not just the turpitude of a group bent on their version of ‘might makes right’ but also of the perseverance and championing of the people from a small, dead end mining town. I truly enjoyed every heart racing page of this installment of the Night Vigil series and I’m looking forward to the next. Hopefully, Travis and Brent have time to heal a bit before the next ‘big baddie’.

Reading this book is like jumping into the deep end of the pool, without a life preserver, when you don't know how to swim...at night. Exciting and a little scary, but just close your eyes and dive in. This is a spooky, scary, action-packed, no holds barred thrill-ride. I love the way this author's series intersect and how characters from other books make cameo appearances and lend knowledge, advice, and helping hands. It is like unexpectedly seeing old friends again. If you love books about the supernatural, magic, urban lore and mythology, and everything that goes bump in the night, you will love this book.

4.5 stars

I've been waiting 4 years for this book and it didn't disappoint. Travis and Brent are back!
These two have a great friendship and work well together in their calling as monster hunters. When an old Army buddy of Brent's reaches out for help with the strange happenings in a Pennsylvania small town, it sounds like something that is in their area of expertise. But the root of the trouble may be more complicated than they were expecting. There are a lot of twists and turns, but it's the friendships that really make this story great.

If you've read other books by Gail Z. Martin/Morgan Bryce, you'll recognize some side characters. I love the mini cross-overs between all the books.

I am voluntarily leaving a review after receiving a free copy. It is an intense few days as Travis and Brent respond to a call for help from South Fork. It takes a lot of research to find out what is causing the deaths in town alongside the danger of flooding. What dangers there was in town were ramped up by unethical practices of a doctor who worked for C.H.A.R.O.N. Brent and Travis lead the townsfolk in the battle for their town and succeed. This book keeps you on edge as you read unable to put it down.

Wow! This is such a good read!
I hadn’t read the first book before reading this one, and
didn’t have any trouble following along.
The storyline twists, winds and straight up slaps you in the face. The main characters are both haunted by their past, and committed to ridding the world of evil paranormal entities.
When everything including the weather is against them in their battle, you can be forgiven for thinking maybe this one isn’t worth it? Definitely a read for those who love paranormal activities steeped in history and folklore.

Voluntary review after reading the ARC...

Gail Martin's books are my go-to when I want to read an action-packed novel of the supernatural variety that doesn't require mental gymnastics to follow, i.e., light reading. This one fills the bill admirably! I hadn't read any of the Travis- and Brent-centric books until now, but have encountered these guys as side characters in the Deadly Curiosities novels and short stories. Their back story is explored briefly, which helped me get a feel for what they are about. As is typical of Gail's works, I learned much about arcane lore and mythology.

Oh man. I love the characters of Travis and Brent. Actually I love all of the characters in this whole “Deadly Curiosities” interconnected universe. These two are now well established colleagues and brothers in arms. It was awesome to watch them work together from the beginning to solve the mystery of the curse that plagues the town of South Fork. I got chills in parts and just could not stop reading.

The story starts immediately, showing a fight against Brent and Travis. Suddenly, the narrative slows and delves into Brent's and Travis's friendship before starting again with the plot. The two friends have contrasting background that help with their mission. It might help to read the first book, but the book works as a standalone. The book is dialogue-heavy.

Sinister organisations, were creatures, and things that hunt in the darkness, definitely seems like another bad day at "work" for Travis and Brent. Just remember to not think "what more could go wrong" because you will absolutely jinx them.
Loved every second of this book and will be waiting for the next adventure.

This was a hard book to put down. I loved it. It doesn't let up from the first page. The plot flows so well and the action keeps your eyes glued to the page. I would definitely recommend this book to friends. I received this book as an ARC for my honest review.

The book is well worth getting and reading it.

You are taken on a journey that will leave you wondering are they going to be able to help people and get the ghosts to leave. This is where the story gets strange and exciting to read, the author did a great job with the book.

What a scary ride! This grimdark thriller played around with what looks like a combination of "Men Who Stare at Goats", "The Island of Dr. Moreau" and "Supernatural" brought to very horrific quasi-life. As weird as it sounds, I found the horror of this situation exhilarating and surprisingly hopeful in how it highlighted the brightness of stubborn human tenacity living everyday lives. Definitely something for fans of Andy Peloquin, Steve McHugh or John G. Hartness.

I was excited to jump back into Travis and Brent's corner of the world. They left off in book 1 with a tentative plan to join forces, both having histories that make trust hard earned. They're called out to respond to an unknown threat and rely on each other as well as throughout the author's network of monster hunters. One of the strengths and delights of this author is how her worlds are interconnected. We see appearances from characters in both her Gail Martin and Morgan Brice names. For the dedicated reader they're very fun easter eggs and add a layer of depth to the story. But the new reader is not lost. There's always just enough info about them to make sense without info dumping or leaving the reader confused. I really enjoyed this book.
