Stephen Charnock (1628-1680), an English puritan divine who was highly skilled in philosophy, patristics, Reformed theology, and Biblical languages. Five years before his death Charnock became joint pastor with that other famous Puritan author, Thomas Watson, of the church at Crosby Hall, London. Along with Thomas Goodwin he was instrumental in the formation of the Congregationalist denomination. The death of Thomas Goodwin and John Owen in 1679, then this of Charnock in 1680 left the world much poorer for outstanding authors. Does include his famous Attributes, but has 7 lovely treatises and a biography by Symington. So many people flocked to hear Charnock that people had to pass the message back to those behind, even to those standing all the way out the church door.
