“In a writing style reminiscent of Tessa Afshar, Ifueko Ogbomo spins a breathtaking tale readers won’t be able to put down!”
~ Heidi Chiavaroli, Carol Award-winning author of The Orchard House and Hope Beyond the Waves

Hers is the flawless face no man has seen—except her father.
His is the foreign face everyone reveres—save his family.
The royal decree that couples this unlikely pair will make or break the history of an ancient empire.

Considered a gift from the sun god due to her arresting eyes, Asenath was veiled in childhood and destined to marry Egyptian royalty. The 17-year-old is resigned to a loveless future in the royal harem, when Pharaoh’s shocking declaration forces her to marry the new vizier of Egypt—a mystical foreigner with powers of divination.

Known as Zaphnath-Paaneah, her husband turns out to be handsome, charming, and possibly insane since he worships an invisible god and expects her—the daughter of a high priest—to do the same. Facing a fate seemingly worse than that she grew up dreading, she desperately searches for a way out of the arranged marriage. The secrets she uncovers usher her into a world of intrigue and treachery that questions all her beliefs about men, gods, and love. Will theirs be the most monumental mismatch made in Egyptian history, or will her daring demand for a sign from his god make all her childhood fantasies come true?

Combining original poetry with well-researched history, A Divine Romance is an Own Voices retelling of a beloved Biblical tale that takes readers on a riveting journey through Ancient Egypt and introduces them to a fresh, poetic voice in Christian fiction.

“A Divine Romance that will resonate in our hearts well past the last page.”

Dear potential reader,

Confession: I’m not someone who ever aspired to be a novelist, as I was quite content with being a poet and oral storyteller. Why then did I write this tale? Well, I remember exactly where I was on April 6, 2019 when the idea for this story came: an Airbnb in Los Angeles. A very strong, three-word impression came to mind during my time of devotion and meditation, which I wrote down in my journal (and promptly forgot about in the coming days). Exactly five weeks later, I received such a dramatic, public affirmation about that personal impression that I was compelled to put my fingers to the keyboard and not stop typing until I saw the words, “The End.” And then the real drama began. Suffice it to say the journey from idea to published novel spanned one pandemic, two continents, three and a half years, four story versions, fourteen residences, and several traumas, but I won’t bore you with that saga!

Instead, since I know that there have been many retellings of this beloved biblical tale, I’ll share a couple of unique things that I hope my version offers you:
1. An Own Voices Perspective: My main characters are an African female raised in a patriarchal society, and an immigrant. I am both of those things, so I wrote this story from that shared, personal outlook.
2. Original Poems: Since poetry is both my love language and my therapy, it was only natural that it play a role in my characters’ lives. And, in lieu of titles or quotes, I’ve opened each chapter with a short, original poem—a poetic hint, as it were.
3. Interpretive Character Names: The most exciting part of my research was discovering Ancient Egyptian names and their meanings, and I was very deliberate in selecting each character’s name to reflect an aspect of their role, appearance, or circumstance.
4. An Immersive Reader’s Guide: To foster your reading experience, the book opens with an illustrated glimpse at Ancient Egyptian cities, deities, and fashions, as well as a glossary of those interpretive character names. (But you’re more than welcome to skip the guide and dive right into the story!)

Ultimately, what I am hoping you take away from 'A Divine Romance' is something I’ve stated in my author note, and I’ll refrain from stating here to avoid giving spoilers—can’t have you hating me before you get a chance to like me, right? (Fingers crossed!)

Seriously, I do want to thank you for daring to embark on a modern journey into an ancient empire, guided by my neurodivergent imagination, and I hope it turns out to be a literary voyage you thoroughly enjoy.

Looking forward to reading your review!

P.S. If you want to know what those three-words that prompted this novel are, read my author note. ;)

Sincerely,
Ifueko (pronounced "ee-fw-echo")

Wow! This debut novel had me hooked from start to finish! To say A Divine Romance is a well-written story is an understatement. Ifueko Ogbomo's ability to keep a reader turning page after page is impressive. Her poems that open each chapter of this book are simply genius. Clearly, a brilliant mind expressed itself in this retelling of an ancient story that captures the power of God's love and true forgiveness. The characters were amazing; Asenath was heart-warming and Joseph, what an absolute gentleman. This is indeed a beautiful romance that I easily see being transformed into a movie.

A Divine Romance easily earned 5-stars from me and I've followed Ms. Ogbomo because I am already looking forward to her next novel!

I feel privileged to have read an ARC and been a member of the A Divine Romance Launch Team.

Ifueko Ogbomo has penned A Divine Romance that will resonate in our hearts well past the last page. Though the story of Joseph is known, Ms. Ogbomo used historical romance to layer in the gaps in a way that puts the reader in a Biblical setting and brings his story to life. Her use of poems, stunning imagery, and the love of a God who chases after the one will endear her to lovers of Christian fiction.

I must say that the debut novel - A Divine Romance by Ifueko Ogbomo - is a must-read!

Written with such beautiful visual descriptions, one could capture every scene vividly and be taken into the world created. Ifueko almost literally takes you through the land of Egypt, as if by the hand. The suspense makes you want to read more, right until the end. And the poems? Beautiful!

Personally, the book unravelled some puzzles surrounding the story of Joseph. It made me see the gravity of the evil done by Joseph's brothers. I also now appreciate the gravity with which Joseph served God.

The love between Joseph and Asenath (chapter 11 got me in a lovey-dovey mood) was a beautiful display of love in accordance with serving the Almighty God. Such declarations of love, commitment, and affirmations by Joseph should be studied. I love the exchange of love notes between the lovers.

The book addresses the matter of waiting on God and depending totally on Him throughout the waiting period, without trying to consult other gods (as Asenath learnt).

The book also addresses repentance from idolatry, with the fear and doubts it brings.

I learnt commitment and forgiveness in a fresh light.

A great story leaves its readers with sparks of light and punchlines engraved in their hearts, not to be forgotten so soon.
Amongst many, I found these statements engraved upon my heart:

“You asked what love is to me. That level of sacrifice . . . devotion . . . affection . . . Loving someone enough to set aside your comfort for them. Beseeching God on their behalf. Staying true to them in life, in death, and beyond; that is what love is to me. That is the love I grew up dreaming of having. You will forgive me, but I can neither offer nor accept anything that falls short of that.”

“There are two subjects upon which I never jest: my heart, and my faith.

“It is not arrogance that emboldens me, my lady. It is devotion to the laws of the God to whom I owe my existence.”

“Wield your pen wisely, remembering this truth: words can inflict graver wounds than swords.”

... and more.

If there's a book that is encompassing as it pertains to our daily dealings with God and life, A Divine Romance, is one.

Thank you, Ifueko. I'm grateful for the privilege of having read the ARC.

I fell in love with the Joseph and Asenath story as a child after watching Joseph: King of Dreams. The DreamWorks animation version of an intriguing love story was soon (well, close to two decades later) challenged by A Divine Romance in my mind.

I have to say this was one ARC I did not regret signing up for. The story progression was plausible. The characters were very real and watching Joseph and Asenath fall in love was beautiful. Even more beautiful was Asenath learning to believe in and love the invisible God.

Ifueko Ogbomo's style of writing is unique and beautiful. I would definitely recommend this book for biblical fiction lovers and lovers of christian romance.

Exceptional and beautiful Biblical fiction!

I'm new to Ifueko Ogbomo's work, but I can tell already that she's a new favorite. Her story in A Divine Romance invites us to meet the Bible's Joseph (Genesis 37-50), his bride-to-be Asenath, and follows their courtship and marriage during the time of Joseph's promotion to Egypt's vizier, and after.

I've always wondered how Joseph (who loved and followed the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob) and Asenath (daughter of Egypt's high priest, Potiphera) could have made a match. I can't imagine a more different set of spiritual beliefs (and practices) being united--the unseen God vs. the pantheon of man-built idols of the land of the pharaohs? Yet Ogbomo invites us into the story of what might have been--if the two could have found common ground and developed not only a marriage but a love story.

Come visit the land of ancient Egypt, on the verge of years of incredible plenty to be followed by horrendous years of famine, with Hebrew God-follower Joseph, and Asenath, his fiancee. Can they find a way to love and follow God together? Don't miss this wonderful Biblical fiction. 5 stars indeed!

This is just an absolutely beautiful debut novel. When it comes to biblical fiction, I’m usually on the fence. Some novels I don’t enjoy quite as much, and then there are others that are so relatable and realistic that I just love them. A Divine Romance falls in the latter category.
I’ve always loved the story of Joseph. But, I must admit, I’ve never given much thought to his wife and who she was, and how this must have affected her.
This story made her so real and realistic, and I just loved it. I feel the story of Joseph in my heart in a new and real way.
Ancient Egypt, all the traditions, the culture, the land, I found it so intriguing to read and learn all these new details.
Idolatry vs. the Creator God. Seeing how the Egyptians lived and worshipped. This novel gave me a lot of insight into those long ago days. It also gave me lots of food for thought, and reminded me that our God is still the same God.
I highly recommend this novel to anyone that enjoys biblical fiction. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future!

A beautifully told version of a biblical love story from Genesis. A familiar story, the story of Joseph who had been sold into slavery by his own brothers. In hindsight of course we know God took what was meant for evil and turned it for the good of his people. But so much of the story is unknown. I myself had forgotten the name of Joseph's wife, though I knew he had one as he had sons. So, to read the story mainly from the perspective of Asenath was intriguing. To wonder what the life of the daughter of a priest would have been like, to have a glimpse into ancient Egypt, to see how a pagan might have become the loving wife of a Hebrew who had risen from slave to second in command in Egypt. It was just a lovely story, filled with beautiful descriptions and lovely poetry. Not just at the beginning of each chapter, but throughout the story.
It's a story of God's love and mercy, a story of putting God first above all others, a story of the power of the one true God over the false gods of Egypt. But yes, it is a love story as well. A story that brought me to tears more than once.
I also loved how each chapter not only began with a poem, but with a word that set the mood of what was taking place.
I'd like to share a few of the passages that stuck with me:
"And when I looked at it, I saw a profound truth: your God saw me and he cared enough to let me know so. If this was the God you wanted me to worship wholeheartedly, then your request was not so much a burdensome condition, but a delightful invitation."
"Are you so quick to forget that even when you did not yet know him, he loved you enough to hear your cry, and give you the sign you asked for? Why would he now withhold any good thing from you? He never forsakes us, Asenath, yet he is the only God who gives his own the free will to forsake him." (This was such a powerful personal reminder.)
"The knowledge of God's sovereignty, coupled with the understanding of his limitless compassion, was salve upon Joseph's wounded heart It still bled, but now it was spilling drops of mercy."
I also love that the author included a reader's guide that included a map of Ancient Egypt, a table of the Ancient Egyptian deities included in the story, fashions of Ancient Egypt, and a list of character names.
Definitely a book I recommend, especially if you are a fan of biblical fiction.

I enjoyed reading this unique, richly detailed work of Biblical fiction. I enjoy seeing the stories of the Bible in a new light, and loved how this tale made me think more about a woman that is only mentioned in passing. I never thought about how hard it would be to marry a stranger from a strange land, with very different customs and a religion that is totally different from what you are used to. The author does a wonderful job of exploring the what if's of the story and really brining the characters to life. This is an excellent book to pick up and enjoy!

Definitely a Devine Romance

This story of Joseph's wife and their family was a beautiful love story. Not only a love story of 2 people in love but also a love story between God and a daughter of Egypt. I enjoyed every minute of it. It was woven into a beautiful and perfect tale. I highly recommend it to all.

Biblical historical fiction that draws you into ancient Egypt and the lives of Joseph and his wife Asenath, A Divine Romance opens up to the reader a world of romance, intrigue, and faith based on the Bible story of Joseph. The author brings to life the court of Pharoah, the character of Joseph's wife. and suggests how Joseph lived out his faith in a pagan culture. Once I began, I had to finish it. Compelling plot and authentic characters.

This mesmerising tale from Ifueko Ogbomo has held me captive!!!! Every time I tried to put it down, i was inextricably drawn back until I gave up and settled contentedly into its pages, allowing myself to be wrapped in this story that unfurled like a delicate blossom.
Reading a story where I already knew the end (it is based on the Biblical Joseph), I was still filled with suspense, joy, intrigue and a few times the tears even pricked the backs of my eyes. If this is her debut novel, I am already looking forward to the sequel.

“A Divine Romance is captivating, beautifully written, and gripping. The plot is well executed. The characters are amazing. I can only imagine the amount of research Ifueko put into crafting this inspiring story. Biblical fiction is my favourite sub-genre of Christian fiction, and I have about three authors I trust to keep me fed. Ifueko Ogbomo is on her way to taking the 4th place. A really beautiful debut.”

This story is just a wordsmithing dream.

Ifueko Ogbomo is a new author to me and wow… I had never thought of this biblical story from that perspective before. But IT. IS. POWERFUL.

She very easily managed to convey the true (and very huge) ramifications of the faith Zaphnath-Paaneah (Joseph) displayed and the powerful impact that just one flame can have on an entire country.

Asenath was an amazingly well developed character. I loved seeing her grow and ask the questions I think many of us wonder. And I loved getting to see the story through her eyes. It truly was helpful in seeing this classic Biblical tale through a completely different lens than I ever had before.

This narrative was beautifully built and I am very much looking forward to what other stories Ifueko Ogbomo decides to tell. This one certainly turned my head and caused me to think.

5 Stars.

*I volunteered to read this book in return for my honest feedback.

To the reader who has experienced the bitter sting of jealousy. To the one who has triumphed insurmountable odds. To the person who has felt the grip of grief, and to the one who has given up hope. This book is for you.

In, A Divine Romance, major themes of faith, redemption, love, and forgiveness amalgamate to reveal a masterfully written fictional account of the story of Joseph, found in Genesis 37-50. Author Ifueko Ogbomo masterfully depicts the astounding story of Joseph, within a prose written primarily from the perspective of the central character Asenath, Joseph’s wife. The story opens with Asenath as a young girl living in her childhood home in Egypt, where she is daughter to the chief high priest of Heliopolis. She is faced with two significant experiences that loom into her early adulthood, one of which is her father’s command for Asenath to live a life veiled until marriage. For he believed she should be hidden until the dawn of her divine destiny. She begrudgingly accepts her assumed fate as well as what she assumed it would cost her. However, a sudden decree from Pharaoh changes the course of her life.

“I know of no better tale to evidence the Lord’s loving-kindness than our stories. Think on this: I grew up a prisoner of my predestined future. Until recently, you were a prisoner of your harrowing past. Yet we stand here, both free, by the mercy of the Lord. Even so, the path to that freedom was a painful one” (Asenath, A Divine Romance).

Having been catapulted from a prisoner to respected as second in command to Pharaoh, Joseph, whose given Egyptian name is Zaphnath-Paaneah, is astonished by the drastic change of his life. Amongst the rewards from Pharoah, he is promised a wife, and is given Asenath, whose pagan beliefs and her disdain of the arranged marriage nearly threaten their future together. It is Joseph’s unwavering faith in the Lord that will change the trajectory of the marriage and ultimately their lives. After many years pass, Joseph is faced with the seemingly impossible task of forgiving the very people who sought to end his life and forced him into slavery, which then led to years of unlawful imprisonment. As Joseph’s faith withers under the pressure of the reemergence of deep hurt, Asenath arises with strength, wisdom, and faith that will anchor Joseph during the most difficult time in his life.

“Bitterness binds; forgiveness sets one free” (A Divine Romance).

In this debut novel, Ifueko Ogbomo showcases her skillful talent for the art of writing. She shares her adept poetry throughout the novel, located at the beginning of each chapter in the book. I quite enjoyed her poetry, as well as the character development and pace of the novel. Following the plot was effortless and the prose was intriguing. I also loved how the greatness of the Lord is denoted in the story. The goodness of the Lord is emphasized, and the characters openly praise and petition the Lord. Ultimately, I absolutely loved this novel, and am thrilled to read future works by the author. I highly recommend this book.

My rating: 3.5 stars

This is an interesting retelling of the life of Joseph and his wife Asenath.
My favorite thing about this book hands down is the faith content. Asenath's faith journey was wonderfully inspiring. She went from being a devout pagan to a believer in the one true God, still struggling to surrender, to a woman mature and strong in her faith. Joseph's journey was also encouraging. God's faithfulness is truly displayed in the life of Joseph!

Another thing I liked about this book was the pacing and tone. Though the story of Joseph is very familiar, the author still managed to make this book suspenseful and engaging, which shows her talent! I was never bored when reading it, in fact my attention was engaged the entire time!

There are a couple of things that did lower my rating of this book. The first I didn't love was the romance. I'm not a fan of instalove and the romance between Joseph and Asentah defintely happened quickly. I think it would have been great if it had been a slowburn romance, especially since this was technically an arranged marriage romance. This is a personal preference, I know.

Another thing I didn't love was the dialogue. At times the dialogue felt really stilted and took away from the continuity of the prose. Other times the dialogue was strong and strengthened the prose. I am going to give the author some grace in this area, though, since it's her debut novel and because I believe that English is not her first language.

I am glad that I read this book and I would be interested to read Ifueko Ogbomo's future works!

Brings the story of Joseph to life

The beautiful cover attracted me to this book and the intriguing story drew me in. I enjoyed the inspiring beautiful story of faith in God and the sweet romance. She brought her imagination to the story of Joseph and his wife called Asenath in this novel. I enjoyed the symbolic dreams and the riddles the author came up with in addition to the dreams Joseph interpreted in the original story. Each chapter started with a poem which I loved. Both the poems and the story were well-written and with an overwhelming message of God's love. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.

"...I wanted you to know you are immensely loved. Nothing you can do will ever make me love you less..."

Going into this book I already had high hopes due to my love for the Biblical account of Joseph. However, A Divine Romance exceeded every expectation that I had.
All of the characters were wonderfully written, the richness of the writing was extraordinary, and the plot was absolutely thrilling.
Also I can not end this review without mentioning the diversity of this story. Being able to read a book where the characters that look like me were described in such a loving manner was incredible.

Beautiful retelling

Absolutely recommend Ifueko Ogbomo's first book, looking forward to reading more by her in the future. A beautifully written retelling of Joseph from the perspective of his wife, down to the little details and the historical knowledge put into it, makes a story you won't want to put down. It takes you to the land and events that leads to the promise land, a story of how no matter the storms we face God has a plan greater than we could ever imagine and a love like no other. No matter the storms we face our creator controls the rains

Lovely and well written!

I've read a few other books about Joseph and another about Ansenath, and this one was excellent! The historical and culture details were engrossing, the variety of ways the story was told, the verbal prose to describe the conflict within Joseph's family, between choosing God vs idols, political plots and romance were wonderfully written.
I highly recommend it!

I greatly enjoyed this perspective of the life, romance, and journey to faith of Asenath, Joseph's wife. , This novel is a stunning work of Biblical fiction with great attention to details, an emotional journey, and a storyline that incorporates the Biblical account of Joseph's time in Egypt with care.
