A thorough primer on the fundamental skills and techniques of quilting presents detailed, step-by-step instructions and photographs that take novice quilters through the process of designing a quilt, creating blocks, piecing a quilt together, and the finishing touches, with tips on selecting and preparing fabrics and a variety of creative quilting projects. 15,000 first printing.
This book starts out with the assumption that the reader has not done any quilting before. It begins with basic information about electric sewing machines. I had my doubts about this section. Anyone who has used an electric sewing machine probably doesn't need this very basic information but it is probably not enough information for people who haven't. It is also so general that it may not apply to many sewing machines. My guess is that most people would probably be better off using the manual that came with their sewing machine.
Following that, there is information about quilting tools and supplies, very basic information about fabric and batting, as well as the how-to of cutting, layering, and basting. The illustrations are clear adequate. From page 48 on, the book is full of projects with instructions. The projects range in difficulty. The nine-patch pillow is super basic. There are also projects for an Ohio star pillow, placemats, table runner, baby quilt, lap quilt, a sewing machine cover, and wall hangings.
There is a short glossary in the back of the book with good, clear definitions and the book is indexed.
The book I have has a Wire-O binding that opens flat but also has a hard cover protecting it. This is like the best of both worlds.
Nice basic book. I did the sewing machine cover. I added a top the same color of the sides of 6 inches before seam allowance for it to fit my larger machine. Like a dream, very easy directions & it looks like it was hard! Love it!
