I met the author of this book Damir on a warm sunny autumn day in Zagreb a couple months back. I decided to purchase the book directly from him whilst I was in town. His warm, loving, appreciative and kind-hearted nature stood out to me from the moment we met. Upon reading his book, my heart filled with sorrow for what he and his fellow men had to endure and suffer. Both during the fighting for Vukovar and the captivity and torture they faced for months on end after. To just imagine oneself, in one’s early 20s fighting for your home as it crumbles around you, and seeing your closest friends killed seems more like a nightmare, but this was the reality Damir and his fellow Branitelji endured. For a man to go through so much and not have his heart hardened is a testament to the Holy Spirit that flows within him. Well worth a read for all future generations. To keep sight of history and never forget the ultimate sacrifice so many made for this land known as Croatia.
