FANTASTIC READ! If you love fantasy, magic, friendship and family then this book is for you. This story was a fresh and an exhilarating take on the way magic was used. Read and find out how bonds of friendship help guide one another to safety. Looking forward to the other books coming out in the series!

I loved Amber’s fresh view on magic (needing a source and what that can cost), bondmates (and the instant connection between the pairs) and the world that she builds.

Each character had their own personal struggles to overcome throughout the book. I loved how each character fought and stood their ground. They each learned to trust themselves and then their bondmates.

There were 3 POVs: Conall, Lark and Kayda. We were following each character throughout the story- there were some scenes that were close to overlapping, but the characters just missed each other. I loved seeing that (even though it was frustrating at times).

Prior to reading this book, I did read the standalone prequel novella “Fate that Entwine Us” (currently a freebie when signing up to Amber’s newsletter). While it was not necessary to read prior to the book, I felt it gave me a better understanding to the overall storyline, the bondmates and the Palisade wall history. I would recommend reading it prior- just for that better grasp.

The epilogue has me questioning everything! I am excited to see where this series takes me.

Thank you Amber for the eARC- these are my thoughts.

I was challenged in one of my book groups to read a book with a wolf on the cover or in the story. So I scrolled through my many Kindle books, and Shadow That Bind Us is the first book that came up. I devoured this book in just a few days. You have unique characters, bond mates, and animals you bond with, and you can hear their voices in your head. We have twists and turns, and I can hardly believe this was a debut novel. I am eager to pick up the next book from Kindle Unlimited and check out what will happen next and how the world will be saved cause, at the end of this one, it's not looking good.

Shadows That Bind Us is the first book in The Palisade Trilogy by @AmberLWerner.

It is giving :
- Deceit
- Fantasy
- Betrayal
- Discovery
- Adventure
- Evil creatures
- Love
- Friendships
- Mages
- Magic and so much more.
Funny enough this book came right on time especially since I just finished watching The Witcher, seeing as I was high on fantasy fever.
The character development in this book was so we'll executed. The opportunity to go on the journey of self discovery and truth with the characters was so interesting and an aspect that I really enjoyed about this book. The individual stories and how they merged with one another providing such a flawless plot was so amazing.
And let me not even get started on the writing. From her choice of words to the description. Every detail of this book was written to perfection in my opinion.

Thank you for this wonderful ARC and so far this has been my favorite read this month because the way I devoured this book. Counting down the hours of work to get home and continuing reading Shadows that Bind Us was awesome.

I can't wait to read the remaining two books in the series. I'm not even going to wait before I read them because the suspense that hit me in this first book has left me wanting for more.

And like I said I'm on a Fantasy drug.

This is my first fantasy book and I absolutely loved it! It was slow in parts but the characters were well introduced and the locations/settings were described really well. As soon as I got to the end I started book 2 😂

The first part of the book explained the world building, the characters and the magic system...
In this story you are following 3 different main characters and I enjoyed each of their POV.
The action took some time to take place but I think it was important to do that because it allowed me to really know Kayda, Conall and Lark (their stories and their abilities) and don’t get lost between them. I really enjoyed the dynamic between the characters with the found family vibes. I think there will be more romance in the following books and I am curious about it
This book is great if you are looking for a YA fantasy book with an intricate world-building but still easy to understand with bondmates, magic, beasts...
Thank you for the opportunity to read it

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BOOK

This book/series has so much going for it. Adventure, romance, Magee, magic, mythical creatures, and so much more.

This book is told from multiple points of view. I had to pay close attention at the beginning so I could keep track of who was who, but once you get into it, it's easy to keep track.

I love the characters of this book. Many have faced hardship in their young lives, but regardless of that pain, they are determined to have a better future. Some as simple as finding a spouse and having a family, wanting to train as a mage to wanting to save the world. I loved watching all the characters learn and grow and to see how they will change from the beginning of the book/series to the end.

I devoured this book. It has me hooked from the very beginning. I couldn't put it down. I had to know what would happen next. As I got to the end, it made me sad to realize the book was over and now I have to wait for the next book. Thankfully it won't be too long of a wait.

I highly recommend this book to those who love YA fantasy and adventure.

Kadya has spent her whole life believing that she is meant for nothing more than a loveless political marriage, but when she overhears a terrible plot that her treacherous stepbrother plans to act out, she vows to stop him at any cost, even if that means learning a dangerous magic that may put her life at risk, and aligning herself with a dangerous beast.

Conall lives a peaceful life and intends to spend the rest of his life doing so. Until the day that he is betrayed by someone close to him and left for dead. He is rescued by a wolf. Together, Conall and the wolf set out to rescue his sister Lark who is in danger and doesn't know it yet.

Lark has always wanted to heal people, so what would be better than joining the Palisade Mages. However, on her way to join them, she is led into a trap by someone who trusted greatly. Will Lark be able to escape her kidnappers before they sell her into a life of slavery?

The Palisade stands to protect those that live on the other side of it from an unknown and unseen enemy that has been kept on the other side in the Abandoned Lands for hundreds of years, no one, not even then mages who give their lives to keep the Palisade in place know what lies on the other side. The magic that is used to keep the wall in tact slowly drains the life out of those mages that choose to protect the rest of the Kingdom of Dracwood, but that is a sacrifice they are all willing to make, for they fear what lies on the other side. But when a group shows up at Mage Keep to bring down the wall and travel through the Abandoned Lands, will that be the beginning of the end for Dracwood?

I loved this book! I loved the elements of fantasy, magic, the bonds of family and friendship. Some of these bonds of friendship were between people and animals, as some of those who can practice magic can also practice bonding magic, which links them to a specific animal for as long as they both live, and allows them to communicate telepathically. This is a magic that all of our main characters possess and they must all find their bonds to help them on their journeys.

The chapters and the focus of the book drifts back and forth between all of our main characters, allowing us to find out where they are and what they are dealing with until they all eventually end up in the same place to see the destruction of the Palisade and learn of what lies behind it and what really threatens the world. They will each need to learn how to use their magic and find their bond animals to protect themselves and those they hold dear.

I loved this book. I loved the fantasy, magic, the love and friendships, the adventures, and even the loss and betrayal that some of our characters have to go through to make themselves stronger. The books that I normally read that have elements of magic in them never touch on how dangerous it is and how something is required to wield it, the characters always learn how to harness it to make the world a better place, but the author in this book shows us how there is a very sever price with magic, it steals your youth and ultimately your life. Some of the mages know the cost and give it freely while others have no idea what they are getting into and have their youth stolen from them.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes their magical fantasy novels with a touch of talking animals, mystery, betrayal, danger, evil creatures (and people) but also characters who will stop at nothing to protect the lives of those closest to them and strangers who they have never never met before.

This is book one in a trilogy and I cannot wait to read the rest!

Shadows that Bind Us - Amber L. Werner

Due to a crazy schedule, I didn’t get to read this in as long a sitting as I would have liked to, but when I finally was able to sit down and get into it, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. So much so, in fact, that I went back and re-read the beginning again in one go.

The story follows three people on their individual, yet connected paths towards an uncertain future. All of the characters, by the end of the novel, have discovered their unique magical talents but have not yet explored them to their fullest, which is okay because it leaves some very nice leads to be explored in the next books.

These characters, Conall, Lark, and Kayda, all find themselves involved with the Palisade Mages in one way or another. This is a group of magicians responsible for tending an age-old magic wall that holds back an evil so terrible that centuries of men and women have been willing to give up some of their magic and years of their lives to support it. The problem seems to be, however, the belief in this mysterious evil has passed more into the realm of myth, and there is a lot of question as to whether the evil even still exists. All three of these main characters, due primarily to their gifts, find themselves drawn into an increasingly complex web of betrayal.

As their stories begin to intertwine, more and more strands of this web become interwoven to the point where, even though they are not yet together by the end of the novel, it is easy to see them coming together in the next as all head towards the safety of another country across a barrier the evil cannot cross.

The storyline is tightly-written, and the characters are enjoyable and multifaceted. I found the writing style to be clear and the detailed descriptions made it easy to envision the world into which the reader is drawn. I would highly recommend this novel for anyone who loves intrigue and plot-complexity.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Shadows that binds us is the debut novel of Amber L. Werner and the first book in the Paliasade Trilogy. This book was a wonderful read. At first the book didn’t really grabbed my attention so I didn’t think I would like it so much but as I continued reading and left those first chapters behind, I quickly realized this book would be great, and it didn’t disappoint. The writing, the magic system, the world building and the amazing characters were all so good. I loved how we got the POV from the three main characters and we could see how their stories almost came together and how they are connected. I loved the fresh take on the magic system. How you had to have an already existing source or pay the price. Some parts of the book I could picture easier than others but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment. While the simpler moments were sometimes more difficult to picture the battle scenes were written beautifully and helped the me imagine everything more clearly. The twist and turns of this book truly had me so exited to continue reading and seeing where the story comes. Having the multiple POV really made me feel connected to the characters and understand their actions and struggles. I loved seeing them grow and seeing how they changed from the beginning of the book. Also that ending left me wanting to start the next book right now. This was definitely a great start to the series, I honestly cannot wait to continue this series and see where the story goes. I absolutely recommend this book if you are looking for a book with a fresh tale on the magic system, that has adventures, mythical creatures, a little bit of romance, multiple POV’s and magic that comes with a price. I will absolutely be reading more from this author.

So…Shadows that Bind Us is one of those stories that grabs hold of your mind, captures your soul, and leaves you completely unable to step away from it. There are so many intriguing and fascinating aspects to it and Werner continually throws you from one earth shattering or mind blowing twist to another. This book is one phenomenal earthquake of a story with revelation after revelation being revealed like after shocks upon the storyline. And about the time you think you have everything figured out some new and exciting plot point is revealed and you realize you still have no idea where this story is going but you are just thrilled to be along for the ride.

There is a phenomenal cast of characters in this book. And along the way each of the MCs became my favorite. But, finally, I landed on Conall as my ultimate favorite character. He was just and loyal and determined. I loved how he would stop at nothing to find his sister, Lark, and I found his bond with Shadow to be really intriguing and perfectly written. I also really enjoyed his relationship with Ereni. Conall was an extremely endearing character and Werner wrote him just right.

So if you love a magnificently written tale with so many twists, turns, and revelations that you feel as if you have been sucked up by a tornado (but in the absolute best of ways), that completely captivates your mind and steals your soul, where the characters are vividly written and perfectly realized, the world building is extremely intriguing and the Magic both familiar and yet extremely unique and complex then you simply MUST read Shadows that Bind Us! You won’t be disappointed!

Three young adults with awakening powers; creatures called the scourge released upon humanity when a magical palisade is brought down; a dragon awakened when the scourge awakens. Evil is about to be released upon the world and mages have to work together to defeat it.

Conall and Lark are brother and sister, but are separated when Conall goes hunting and is betrayed, while Lark is at home deciding to leave home and go to where she can learn healing from the mages. Leaving a letter telling of her intent and trusting in the help of a family member to help her get to the mages. Unfortunately, Lark is deceived also and things do not go as planned.

Princess Kayda learns she has magic and is beginning to learn it with the help of a friend. However, she learns a family member is trying to take control of the kingdom and kill the king, their grandfather. Jayda’s life changes in a moment and she finds herself bonded to a dragon.

All three fighting different dangers in different places, all believing they are alone and without their families. All apart in their own adventures, but all so close in reality without even knowing.

This is an entertaining story, which I look forward to learning more in the next book.

I tend to enjoy slow-build stories with lots of world and character development, so I was surprised how much I liked the pace of this one. It kicks off with an intense opening and keeps the momentum going throughout. The world still feels rich and lived in, with that mix of danger and beauty that makes fantasy settings so immersive. The magic system is well thought out, with real consequences that make every choice matter.

The characters are what really pulled me in. Kayda’s journey is emotional and layered. Conall grew on me more than I expected, and Lark was probably my favourite. She is clever, brave, and unpredictable. I liked how their stories gradually start to come together.

There is a great balance between character development and action. The writing is smooth, with just enough description to bring everything to life without slowing things down. There were also some twists I genuinely did not see coming.

If you enjoy character-driven fantasy with multiple points of view, high stakes, and a touch of found family, I definitely recommend this one. I will be picking up book two for sure.

This is not a full review. I read through the beginning of all 300 SPFBO9 contest entries. This was a book I wanted to read more of.

A group of initiates must sacrifice something of themselves to the magical Palisade that keeps their home safe from the monsters without that no one has seen in 100 years - but this is only the beginning

This is a YA fantasy, as near as I can tell. I think it’s competent and interesting. I’m not sure who the protagonist is yet - this may be an ensemble read, but the world details are interesting.

Within the first section of chapter 1, tho, there is a steady drip of interesting magical details with several surprises, especially at the end.

I’m interested to see where this one goes. It feels active and well paced, and the setting of a graveyard at the opening of the second section has tickled my macabre little heart.

At just over 300pgs, this could prove to be an absorbing fantasy coming of age read (if it’s Amazon categories are to be trusted). I’m in!

A story to get totally absorbed in!

Amber L. Werner's writing brings everything to life with vivid descriptions, realistic characters, and a magic system that makes sense with rules and costs. It's packed with emotion too. You feel not just for the main characters, but for everyone in the world Amber has created. It's exciting, and sad, and shocking, and sickening, and joyful, sometimes all within a few pages.

In this story, I liked the clear but interesting introduction to the magic system, the mysterious mix of personalities and motives, the variety of perspectives, the many unpredictable twists and turns, and the way the plot build and builds and builds. I also liked the character development.

This book ends on a cliffhanger. I'm going to stop writing this review so I can continue the story in the next book.

Shadows That Bind Us is an action-packed, thoroughly enjoyable read, full of magic and intrigue.

The narrative follows three protagonists, all of whom I was invested in from the very beginning of the novel. The alternation of perspective characters is easy to follow, and each protagonist contributes to the gripping narrative in equal measure.

The bonding magic in Shadows That Bind Us is one of my favourite magic systems that I’ve encountered in a fantasy novel in a long time. The bonding between mages and magical creatures adds an extra layer of intrigue and character development which is fun every step of the way.

I was lucky enough to land an advanced reader copy of this novel from the author, and I’m so glad I did so! I will definitely read more by Amber L. Werner. I already can’t wait to read the sequel to Shadows That Bind Us!

Shadows That Bind Us
By: Amber L. Werner

This book started like any other I have read, so interesting I couldn’t stop reading it. The author did an amazing job with her details in how the young girl and her brothers relationship was at odd, and how her brothers behavior and attitude made her feel like she didn’t really matter. But then a new chapter led to a new set of characters and I was intrigued all over again, Three sets of different characters, three story lines that all led to one goal, making it to Mage Keep.

Where do I even start with my feelings on this book? I am so happy I had the opportunity to read this and look forward to the second one (which I am starting today) I don’t know why but I just feel like Lark would be a force of nature it she just let herself go and see what she can do. I also feel like she would be a great person to see in concert, the way her voice is described in the book I could feel it in my heart.

If you can read this book, and the second one in the series, you should grab it and give it a chance. You may think it’s not your type of book, but until you pick it up and give it a chance you won’t know.

I loved this book! Shadows That Bind Us follows the POVs of 3 characters, Kayda, Conall, and Lark.

I truly loved the world building in this book and the fact that the characters are bonded to animals! There is bonding magic and summoning magic, and the three main characters are special in that they each posses both types. We see them overcome struggles throughout the book and solidly the bonds with their bondmates. I can’t wait to see where Book 2 takes them!

Also, THAT EPILOGUE!! I have so many questions!!

This book is definitely for you if you love:
⭐️ Epic quests
⭐️ DRAGONS, WOLVES, AND BIRDS OF PREY
⭐️ Magic
⭐️ Found family vibes
⭐️ Awesome world-building
⭐️ Did I already say DRAGONS?🐉

Definitely a 5/5 read for me!! Can’t wait to start book 2!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Amber Werner! If you’re looking for a good, easy to follow fantasy book with awesome world building, unique characters, magic, and suspense then this is your book! The Shadows That Bind Us is told from multiple POVs, bouncing between 3 main characters & weaving the story together seamlessly to the end. With the different POVs you get small snippets of the facts & story to figure out what is going on in the kingdom. I do wish the plot would have been made a little more apparent since most of the book feels like 3 random characters, but on the other hand I do feel that this works perfectly for the big reveal at the end! I can’t wait to continue reading in this trilogy to see what happens next with each character!!

Dark, Devastating...and Delectable!

An absolutely amazing multi-POV coming of age tale, but definitely not for young readers. This is very dark, and has several trigger warnings but the story is so well done. An ancient evil lurks outside the Palisade Wall, held back by the sacrifice of mages giving their literal lives to build the wall. When events are set in motion that put the wall at risk, the lives of three young people all begin to intertwine with magic and the fate of the world. They have to deal with treacherous families, discover new gifts, and find new friends in all shapes and sizes as they journey on their new paths in life.

I love the "found family" aspect, as well as the animal companions, and I always am a sucker for a nice dark tale!

I was given the digital copy of this book as an ARC. I knew nothing about this book prior to getting it so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It's a high fantasy story with mages, royalty, and different points of second person POV throughout the chapters. I'm a fan of that writing style. It's an easy to follow along story and Google Books has a Read Aloud feature that I took full advantage of. You follow a scattering of young adults who are going through a rough time and they discover that they all have certain talents. It's the first in a trilogy and I hope I am blessed with the ARCs for the next two.

Amazing!

Nooooo!!! I was not ready for this book to end. You get used to a bunch of fast fiction on Kindle Unlimited, but this was a work of art. Gems like this are the reason why I kept my Kindle Unlimited subscription past the free trial date. If I didn’t have KU, I would have bought this book and cherished it forever. It’s that good.

The world Amber created here is incredibly detailed. The journey these characters embark on is nothing less than epic. This is a book that belongs on the shelf of every book store! I cannot wait to read the second book and will be devouring it shortly. I am so grateful to have found such an amazing story!

This book captured from the prologue, with it's interesting take on magic, that to become a Palisades mage you had to give up something precious and irretrievable. I won't give any spoilers but it was a shocking moment and left me wanting to know more about this group of people and what drove them to sacrifice so much.
The story centres around the three main characters and does a great job of telling their early stories so that you get a real feel for the characters moving forward. It is a story of family, friendship and loyalty. If you love found family, magic and adventure, then you will love Shadows That Bind Us.

Magic, dragons, bondmates, princesses , and evil all have to come together to fight keep you immersed in this nonstop adventure. Did I mention DRAGONS?!?!?! Its like everything that fascinates me came together in one epic tale!

You will fall for the charaters and have your mind working overtime on how they all connect. In fact, I'll end this review now so I can continue the quest! Don't miss this truly amazing and very indepth story that is a great escape from reality!

This was a really good read, and a such refreshing break from fae and vampires and courts and kingdoms! Nothing wrong with those things, but I’ve read so much of it lately that I was in need of a change. I was looking for something that picked up quickly, had characters I could “get to know” easily and care about their story. I enjoyed the changing POVs and how it is clear they will all converge eventually. Enjoyed the creative magic system, and the animal bonding. This was a real page turner for me, filled with action and suspense, and a few twists I did not see coming. I am looking forward to reading book two!

I really enjoyed this story. I could easily picture the world the author is describing and for me that is really important. I want a book that carries me away, distracts me from real-world stresses, and lets me relax!
With the multiple points of view, it was easy to understand each character's situation and why they did what they did. Before you ask, yes, I had a favorite character, and that was the dragon of course lol!
I was given this book as an ARC to review and can happily say that as a YA fantasy, it is fun, easy to read, and truly a great time! I will look for book 2 for sure.

This was a nice and easy start to a YA fantasy series. I liked the magic in the book, and the world around it seemed cool too. The characters and plot felt a little weak to me, maybe it was that the whole book felt like setup for things to really happen in book two, or maybe it was that the characters just felt like they were floating along being forced into things by people (or animals) who knew more than they did, and not making any decisions for themselves. Maybe this will improve in the later books, but I’m not sure I’ll seek them out.

This book is the first book in the Palisade Trilogy. This book had so many magical elements to it. It had fantasy, magic, mystical creatures, and so much more. While reading the story I was so drawn it that I could almost envision I was living in it. I enjoyed the multiple POVs and felt like I never got lost in them. It transitioned smoothly throughout the reading. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I recommend reading this book especially if you love fantasy books or YA fantasy.

WOW!! I wasn’t sure what to expect with this one…. I just thought it looked interesting and decided to give it a try. Boy, what an understatement! This story weaves through innocence, intrigue, family loyalty and deception, dragons, magic, and an ancient evil in a way that will leave you breathless! The epic proportions of this story, amazing characters, and world building are spectacular. The storyline is captivating and intense. Cannot wait to read book 2! A definite MUST READ!
