The Last Eternal #3

Into the Untamed Lands

Rate this book
The flames danced like madness in the wanderer’s eyes.

He’d faced the monster posing as Soldier in combat, and he had won.
But at what cost?

Forty-seven villagers of Alhs dead. So many that they could not bury them all and so they had looked to the old ways.

They had looked to the flames.

Forty-seven.

They had been people yesterday. Today, they were nothing but memory. Nothing but ash drifting away on the wind, disappearing into the night.

Mourners surrounded the pyre. In the shifting glow of the blaze their faces looked alien, strange. As they looked at him, each in their time, he felt their judgment, their hatred.

And they were right to judge, to hate, for their pain, their travails had only just begun. Bereft of the barrier that had protected them from the Untamed Lands, the villagers of Alhs would be forced to venture into the wilderness, to brave the many dangers awaiting them there.

But not all dangers lay ahead.

The creature who had taken Soldier’s place was dead, but there were others of its kind, and they knew where the wanderer was now.

They knew...
And they were coming.
With the ashes of the dead still settling upon the ground, the wanderer does the only thing he can do. He leads the villagers further into the wilderness, to a place where monsters roam and magical creatures out of nightmare lurk in the shadows.

He leads them into the Untamed Lands.

Into the Untamed Lands is book three in Jacob Peppers's bestselling epic fantasy series, The Last Eternal. It is the story of a lone warrior who faces magical beasts, mythic creatures, and monsters out of nightmare to save those he loves. Into the Untamed Lands is an action-filled, character-focused tale set in a grimdark fantasy world.

Like pulling teeth

The 1st 2 books were great this book turns the main character into a big wussy and completely Disregards the 130 years that he's been alive and experienced things nobody else has; and being almost 100 years older than everyone around him and yet still acts as if he's an inexperienced youth; he goes into his locket to get advice from the ghosts of the other Eternals and tell him his choices are wrong and to trying to save others is a bad thing and to ditch the people to save himself and that sword.

It was good I like the main character the wanderer. Jacob I think does a good job showing the effects of 100 years alive does to him and the amulet is also a very nice touch. The side characters are interesting and they have a lot of quotes you will like especially the sheriff. Fight scenes are good he isn't totally overpowered most of the time he is the underdog actually. All in all I would recommended this series and this book to anyone. Never know until you try.

I read The Seven Virtues series with great pleasure, an amazing series that I highly recommend to any fan of dark epic fantasy. It was therefore only natural for me to pick up The Last Eternal series as well. Now that I am halfway through the third book, I must slowly come to the conclusion that this series falls far short of The Seven Virtues.

One of the biggest issues with The Last Eternal is its slow pacing. The story drags on, which significantly diminishes the reading experience. Additionally, there are too many repetitive, dull internal dialogues that often go nowhere and slow down the plot. This makes it difficult to stay engaged.

Another major problem is that the story often feels too juvenile and simplistic. The main storyline lacks the depth and complexity that made The Seven Virtues so compelling. Example; Despite the protagonist possessing unparalleled skills and over 100 years of experience, he frequently struggles with relatively simple situations. This leads to cringe-worthy moments and makes it hard to stay immersed in the story.

In short, although I had high expectations after reading The Seven Virtues, The Last Eternal has left me disappointed so far. Hopefully, the series takes an unexpected turn in the second half, but up to now, I cannot recommend it with the same enthusiasm as the previous series.

Although the story starts a little weak, events definitely rev up as decisions are made to move on from the town. I wish Ungr would get over his humility and guilt towards the people. I’m annoyed with repetition of his concern with Dekker and his family, I get it already! You care about them.
Okay now that I’ve vented, I can move on. There’s great tension between Ungr and the townsfolk who blame him for the destruction of their barrier. Some of the animosity is foreboding and I’m nervous for what’s to come. I very much feel anger at a few people who outright hate the wanderer. I wish their deserved comeuppance. But I do like Sheriff Fred.
There are some exotic creatures lurking in the woods. There are the Accursed, the Unseen, and the Whisperers. I’m sure we’ll see more too. You don’t know when these creatures will appear and so this adds drama to the already freaked out townspeople. We also get more magic moments.
And I must mention we get more ghost action. As annoying as Tactician is, he has some of the best lines:
“… something that you for all your wisdom never taught me.”
“Oh? And what’s that? The best way to commit suicide?” Tactician snapped.
So I enjoyed this book more than I expected. I hope there will continue to be more magical surprises for us.

Love this series!

Many good writers create wonderful characters, imaginative lands and all manner of creatures. FEW, however, tap into the emotive landscape in, and between, the characters as does Mr. Peppers.

This ability to paint the spectrum of human emotions with such depth and vibrance has been rarely seen in many, if any, other writer’s works read by this reviewer.*

I heartily endorse this author and especially this series and anxiously await the next installment!

Very well done Sir!

* I read well over 500 books/year and have done so for most of my 62 years (well, at least since I was age 12 or so …). I hesitate to state this as some would interpret this as bragging.

No, I state this ONLY to establish a baseline that I have some strong basis to base this review of Mr. Pepper’s work.

Frankly, I feel like I’m a bit of a Aberrative freak reading so many books per year and have not ever publicly stated so. Accept my apologies if you feel like I have crossed decorum’s line.

After the attack by the Accursed, the mercenaries and the death of the imposter Soldier, it is no longer safe for the citizens of to remain. The barrier is down and the wizard who created and maintains it lives farther in the south of the Untamed lands. Ungr convinces most of the townspeople to follow him on a dangerous journey hoping to find the Wizard, knowing any who remain behind with be killed when the other imposters arrive. But Ungr is being blamed for all the trouble and the majority don’t trust him to lead him safely.

They shouldn’t have been talking so much when they were back-searching for followers. Also, the wizard was supposed to have brought a wagon with him on his journey, but how could get it across the mountain?

Fave scenes: Ungr in the major’s office, Veikr’s ribbons, the ‘rope’ line and the storm.

♡ Found Family
♡ Badass Horse
♡ Entertaining Adventure

Dekker and his family were so wholesome. I loved seeing how well Ungr and Dekker’s friendship grew and the trust they had for each other. This book had the most adventure and overall things happening so far with this series. From close calls, and death in the air, to hunting down a wizard, life on the run hasn’t had a dull moment. Veikr being the best horse ever was also a bonus, the ribbons were a nice touch.

This has been my favourite book so far in the series because of the deep character development that many characters go through. There is a richness and layering of emotions, growth and realization that we see in the protagonist as well as other characters within the book. Even those that don't play a big part. I like the point that is made somewhere along the line about the imperfections in people are the things that we often love about them. Still appreciate that the author can talk about mature things (such as brothels for example) and yet still keep the story clean. I enjoyed a twist or two that I wasn't expecting. Good cliffhanger of an ending.

While I enjoyed this book so far its hard to get past the woe is me and I'm always at fault crap that this character goes through constantly .. what bothers me the most w it is the constant ill sacrifice myself for others even when he knows if he does the others will die because the evil will have his sword the character is so upsetting w his bs that u actually hope he looses the sword and stays alive long enough to watch him fail the way he constantly keeps saying he will smh all n all so far not impressed w the development 3 books in smh

Having read the previous installments I held high expectation for this novel. While the story was compelling I could help skim over some areas. Ungrs constant self doubt coupled with quite a bit of back fill and then topped off with an overextended slog through the untamed lands only to meet the wizard and have the story end promptly made the last page welcome.

I anticipate this novel is a stepping stone for the author, setting the stage for something greater in the next installment.

book continues to develop the character

I’m enjoying the story a lot. I look forward to book 4. My one constructive criticism is that Youngest spends too much time berating himself, accepting blame for things that any person would do to survive. Even if he had known about the town, there was no choice. He could have warned the townspeople right away about the possible repercussions of his action and tried to fix the situation before it got out of hand.

fun read

Thus far, it’s been a nice series to spend time with. The waxing and waning of wanderer’s feelings get a bud redundant when they could simply be stated forcefully instead of taking up paragraphs repeatedly. But it still flows nicely and the story line has not at at all been predictable. Will keep going and enough the journey as it unfolds. Curious enough to see it through….

Made me think.
Unger, the Youngest and last Eternal, has run with Dekker and his family to the town of Alhs and broken down the protective walls. As a result townspeople were killed. This book relates how Ungr thinks about the actions he must take to try to save as many people as possible. His thoughts about the pros and cons of the paths he will take and the possible results of his decisions is something we all need to do. Think before acting.

With 12 Eternals impostors to defeat, looks like this series is going to be a long one, Ungr defeated one in the previous book. In this book, I hate how Ungr is being painted as weak, and he doesn’t deserve the hate he is getting — I guess life is like that, we sometimes fine ourselves in circumstamce we don’t deserve, we have to work in earnest to prove ourselves. In any case, I feel tired for Ungr, give the man a break..

Into the Untamed Lands keeps me up at night! Most books put me to sleep but the books by Jacob Pepper makes you care about the characters and makes you feel you’re there with them! I always read this author first! I can’t wait to see what happens. It’s hard to guess as the characters go about their lives just as real people do and that makes them unpredictable.

Ungr, the wanderer, and his small band continue fighting the Unseen and soon make plans to find a solution to protect the town and it’s people. Once the plan begins it becomes deadly and a group of survivors attempt to find a way to end the death and suffering. With non stop action, the same reliable group of characters and an awesome story you will not be able to put this book down !

Enjoyment

A great book/ series. I was unable to read it straight though. Life, sleep, eye strain, and a need for small break from it, interfered with my reading. And now I find out there is more. I wnill read on regardless of eye strain! I need to find out what happens to these well developed characters.
Thank you Mr. Peppers.

Left the village and lost a group of people coz they are mature than a 100+ year old YOUTH. I know I'm immature for my age but I would have to say if I lived 100s of years I would have attained some kind of wisdom and maturity. Everyone, I mean EVERYONE is more mature than him.. I think this is my last book of the series. Not a big fan of watching paint dry.

Wonderful Fiction

Jacob Peppers has created one of the most unique and gripping tales I have read in a long time. His main character is unusual in an amazing way, while the other characters that come into his life throughout the story give him something he thought he might never have again, feelings. A great read. I can't wait for the next book, so get hunching Jacob.

brilliant

Jacob Peppers is now my favourite author. I have read most of his books and The Last Eternal has not disappointed me. If you have not already read his books you must and this series is as good a place to start. Humour, mix emotions, mystery, fighting and brilliant storytelling
Its 100% worth reading

Dribble! Plot is repetitive and author often repeats text and phrases, clearly struggling to create volume and meet publishing deadlines. Numbingly benign metaphors are over-used as the story degenerates into a poorly written spaghetti western.

The wagon train enters the Untamed Lands. Following one who has brought such calamity. In this place the ears hear whispers. The eyes illusion. Abominations hunt. The wizard lies deep within.

Rootin tootin crazy good! Shades of the Dark Tower. Bleak desolate haunting. Dang!

A good book in the series

The main character grew much more in this book. He had to deal with his moral consequences of saving his friends when it put others at risk. Looking forward to the next book.

Action Start to Finish

Still plenty of character development as the Youngest learns how to be social and the pitfalls resulting from mistakes. I enjoy the other characters pointing them out to him.
