After years of intense training, Catherine Seymour is finally ordained as a knight. Eager to prove herself, she participates in her father's jousting tournament. The moment she's knocked out of her saddle by the new warrior known as the Crusader, the world she hoped to build for herself begins to slowly crash down.
She visits the Crusader's tent to see the face of the warrior that bested her, only to find herself smitten with the beautiful, copper-haired Helena. There are just two problems with her new-found crush.
One; her father is insistent he passes the village of Birkstead down to his future grandchildren.
Two; Helena is a vampire.
The presence of the undead in sleepy little Birkstead becomes undisputable when a pair of feuding vampires destroy the chapel and kill her former mentor, Sir Walter Alwyn.
Grief-stricken, Catherine reports what happened and is tasked to retrieve two sets of vampiric remains before the end of the week. If she succeeds, she will be able to choose who she marries. If she fails, she'll be married to a nobleman of her father's choosing. That or she'd die trying.
Catherine stumbles across Helena's lair at the edge of the village and reluctantly asks the vampire for help killing her mentor's murderer; the very vampire Helena despises.
As time runs out, Catherine's feelings for Helena blossom and she finds herself more and more unwilling to make Helena's remains the set she needs to ensure she retains the coveted role of knight.
Will she kill Helena as her quest and her vow to the Church demand?
so, this book promises a paranormal & historical romance with a vampire and a knight. I do think it delivers on what I’d hope for from a vampire/knight relationship in an interesting way, and in general I did enjoy reading it, but!
1) for a book marketed as a romance, it does NOT have a happy ending. the characters aren’t together at the end and it looks like we have been set up for a sequel with a cliffhanger ending that’s pretty disappointing.
2) maybe personal preference - I thought the formatting for kindle was awful. there are awkward spaces between each paragraph and the chapters were not internally divided, so I could only tell if I was a percentage of a way through the book without knowing how much longer I had to go in each chapter. this annoyed me constantly.
3) the writing was sometimes stiff (with the occasional grammatical error like a line was rewritten but not looked at a second time) and sometimes switched POVs mid-paragraph so we’d get an internal look into what another character was experiencing which was jarring. maybe I’m used to stories that do the close 3rd person perspective. this seemed to only happen sometimes at odd places though.
if you wanted to read a sapphic relationship between an english knight and a vampire, by all means, please read this! there are some elements that made it less enjoyable for me, though, especially the ending which disappointed. i wouldn’t call this book a romance - maybe romantic fantasy instead. i didn’t know this book was part of a series when i started it; just saw it in tags on instagram. knowing it was part of a series with the same couple may have changed my expectations for it.
I really liked this!! very enemies to lovers for sure a bit slow burn but I think it was just because the book is a bit shorter but anyway I love the characters and the kinda somewhat plot we get is fun and interesting so I would definitely recommend!!
This book was on a list of butch/femme romances. It was neither butch/femme nor a romance. I can forgive the first as not the author’s fault but not the second as it was explicitly marketed as a romance. A romance has to have a happily ever after or at least happy for now. This did not. It also had a cliffhanger which in my opinion is not a great way to end a romance.
I found the writing quite stilted and unnatural which was not helped by awkward and strange formatting in the kindle edition. There were several grammatical errors as well which makes for a difficult reading experience. I felt at times that I could see where the author went back to make changes and then forgot to smooth out the remaining sentences and make them flow after revision.
The head jumping in this book was atrocious! I would be in one character’s POV and without warning or signal, I would suddenly be in another character’s POV which made for a whiplash feeling. This is always so frustrating as a reader as it makes me want to yell ‘pick a POV!’ It doesn’t let me sink into a character and understand their motivation as I’m put on a carousel, spinning from head to head as the whim of the author demands.
It’s too bad as I am always interested in f/f romance and fantasy, but this was poorly executed and so I couldn’t really enjoy it.
A Knight’s Blood details an honourbound knight falling into a forbidden love with a mysterious vampire. The pair must work together to slay an ancient evil haunting their small medieval village.
The action is frantic, the romance is smouldering and the character dynamics are enthralling.
The book is perfect for anyone who has dreamed about being a badass swordswoman who is seduced by a dangerous vampire.
When I finished this I said “hmm. That was fine?” out loud because I’d seen all the top reviews here complaining about the cliffhanger ending and like?? That BARELY qualifies? I don’t think you can declare something not a romance that definitely still had what I’d count as a HFN in the world of vampire tropes.
The actual execution of this story was pretty messy, but I enjoyed the dynamic between the two leads enough that I’d pick up the sequel for sure … if it existed. Until then, that was mostly fun, enjoyably different, even if the dialogue was lackluster and the prose between was. Not inspiring. It still got its story told, and for an indie debut, I’m willing to forgive the rough edges. It wasn’t really what I was looking for for spooky season, but I could tell that going in and just read it anyway because I was in the mood for vampires and didn’t have much that qualified on my physical shelves rn.
This is a slow burn book. I was really taken with the characters and circumstances. Do not be dissuaded by the editing. There are only grammatical errors. It takes nothing away from the story. Do yourself a favor and read this book! I am looking forward to the next continuation.
Catherine is a Knight untouched till she met The Defender!
The Defender that removed Catherine from her horse is not a man. Oh my! The Defender is a woman who calls herself Helena and has lived over a hundred years. They become friends and maybe lovers in medieval England. Catherine father has his own agenda in ensuring his village is taken care of after he dies. Catherine is like her mother, head strong and determined who was killed by the church for what she found out. He doesn't know Catherine is in love with Helena and Helena is a vampire! Enjoy!
This was... pretty bad, but good enough to read on a work trip for some steam. My bar for that is EXTREMELY LOW, however, so, take that for what it is. I honestly don't think I feel like saying much more about it than that - except, for having read this for romance/steam - there's not really all that much of either, which was disappointing. 1.5/5.
I enjoyed this story and look forward to the next one. I hope we get to see more of the vampire world, politics and all those stuff. The author should consider world building for the story because there is already a solid ground to build with lots of potential.
I wasn't entirely sure what I expected from this book but it certainly left me wanting more. I wasn't disappointed in any aspect of the story and I loved the sweet romantic moments, even if they were backdropped by blood (which I don't mind in the slightest)
This a beautiful story. I enjoyed what it was about. Two women growing together in love. Acepting who they are. Making hard decisions for their lives. Not turning back
I love it! It's was a very great and simple story. The love story is really adorable and cute. I'm waiting for the tome 2, there is a lot I want to know and I want to see more of our lovebirds.
