Charlotte Hawthorn had everything she could ever want. She lived alone, enjoyed freedoms that few women ever experience, was a governess and an artist, and she had not seen her husband in four years. Theirs was a marriage in name only, a convenience.
Victor Hawthorn, Viscount Blackmar, had not wanted to marry a stranger at the age of one and twenty. However, when a wealthy merchant purchased all his father’s debts, Victor was given the choice to either marry the man’s soon-to-be sixteen-year-old daughter or his family would face complete ruination. Victor had chosen marriage then left his young bride on a small estate and returned to his life.
When he reluctantly returns four years later, Victor doesn’t find the girl he left behind, but an enticing, independent woman who not only creates beautiful art but would rather be a governess than married to him. Will they find their way to love and happiness or will all be ruined by an enemy who sets out to destroy their future?

I'm sad to see this series come to an end however what an incredible way to a series.
If I could give this book a 10 star I would.
A marriage of convenience turned into a marriage of love and so much more
Charlotte was verbally abused daily by her father and to further humiliate her, he marries her off to a titled family who needs the money.
Victor hoped he had many many years before he had to wed but to save his family from being ruined he must wed a girl he barely knows just for her money.
But they quickly strike up a bargain that is very convenient for them both, however after 4 years apart he wants to visit his wife. What neither of them realize is that a lot can change in 4 years such as her appearance, her confidence, her hobbies and most of all their desire and love for each other despite the many challenges they've faced in the past.
They will face the future together.
I loved this book from beginning to end. I look forward to whatever Jane has in store next.
I received this a gift in exchange for an honest review and these are purely my thoughts and no one else's.

The fourth book in the series & whilst it’s easily read on its own to fully appreciate I’d recommend reading in order. I had the preconceived idea that I wouldn’t like Victor but I was so wrong. I also thought Charlotte was older as she had a very wise head on young shoulders. As I read more of the book I totally agreed with why Victor left. A well written lovely romance with strong characters & a delightful story & I was captivated by Victor & Charlotte’s journey to a HEA. My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Victor and Charlotte had me wrapped up in this cute love story. The things that I loved about are mainly that the two came to an agreement to get to know one another and become friends. Years later with Charlotte being twenty one, it was hard to imagine or connect with the romance scenes with Victor her husband. If her age was given as a guess or not provided in the book. I liked the important background story about the two characters working on their independence from their family and building their life together.
WOW… WHAT AN INCREDIBLE READ!!!! Enticed by a Governess by Jane Charles is book 4 in the Love of a Governess series and though in a series this book can be read as a standalone. This is one of the most incredible and exciting regency book I have read this year it will keep you on the edge of your seat especially towards the end. Secrets, lies, murder, mystery and so much more. This book is so very well written… Kudos to you Jane Charles. I can’t say enough about this book. I found this book easy to read, well written, had the real feel of the regency era, vivid descriptions and I just could not put it down. Be prepared to stay up all night with this one. This story has a commoner that is force to marry at 15 yrs old, a father that had ruined the family with gambling and drinking, a soon to be viscount that must do his duty to save his family, a cruel father that is always putting them down, being beyond wealthy, holding the debts, putting her up in an estate and leaving her there alone for four years, an evil sister and mother, greed, an explosion, a fire, murder, attempt to kill someone, taking the bullet for them and falling in love. I am so highly recommending you read this book… as I said it is INCREDIBLE!!!
***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.
Charlotte Thompson, the daughter of a wealthy merchant was not quite sixteen when her father arranged her marriage to Victor Hawthorn, the son, and heir of Viscount Blackmar. Her father bought up the Viscount’s debts and threatened to ruin the family if Victor did not marry his daughter. Charlotte is mortified by her father’s actions and later humiliated when she overhears Victor’s parents talking about her. She is sure she will be trapped in an unhappy marriage and an embarrassment to Victor, who is the most handsome man she has ever seen. But to her surprise, Victor seeks her out in the garden and they talk and make plans – plans that will thwart her father and his parents. Victor proposes that they have a marriage in name only for a few years, and suggests that Charlotte move to an estate he owns in Willanton and let her have a bit of freedom (and time to grow up) before they make any decisions about their marriage. Charlotte agrees and despite the manor house being in disrepair, she is thrilled to have a place of her own. She and Victor begin to set the house to rights and a friendship blossoms but it is soon clear to Charlotte that Victor is restless and after of month, she tells him he is free to return to London. He hesitates, but she insists, he hires a companion for her and leaves, promising to write and visit soon.
Four years later, Victor and Charlotte have kept in contact via letters, but he has not seen his wife since the day he left. He had planned to, but when his father died unexpectedly, things always kept him from traveling to Willanton. But when he learns from a friend who met Charlotte at a ball held by her neighbor, the Earl of Melcombe, some of the things his wife has been up to, he is more than a little surprised. His friend Percy can’t believe that Victor lets his wife live alone, and Victor realizes that he doesn’t know his wife as well as he thought, something that is going to change now. He travels to Willanton and is floored when he sees her – gone is the awkward young girl, his wife is all grown up and is stunning! She is also keeping a lot of secrets and before they can have a real marriage, they will have to learn to trust one another, and maybe love will follow. But even love might not be enough to ensure this couple’s HEA.
What a great story! I have been waiting for this story since learning that Charlotte was married in the previous book, and this book did not disappoint! I adored Charlotte and Victor, they are likable, and don’t blame each other for the sins of their parents. This book has a lot going on, there are secrets, shocking revelations, great (and some not-so-great) secondary characters, murder, loss, warm love scenes, surprising twists, a bit of heartache, and finally a HEA that includes an epilogue. The story does contain some triggers that might be upsetting to some readers, including verbal abuse and the loss of a child, but the author handled both with compassion and minimal on-page details. This is the fourth book in the series, but like the previous books, it can be read as a standalone title, but I would suggest reading the series in order for the best reader experience. I loved this story and highly recommend it for historical romance lovers or anyone who loves an ugly duckling story with a HEA.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that I requested and was provided to me by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.*
Charlotte is the daughter of an extremely wealthy businessman, Mr. Thompson, and the only thing he needs now is for his daughter to marry a titled gentleman which will uplift his name in society. He has belittled, mentally abused and reminded his daughter every day to conduct herself in the perfect behavior to attract the right man. Now, he has bought up the large gambling debts owed by Viscount Blackmar and has informed his, not quite sixteen-year-old, daughter that she is to marry Victor Hawthorn, heir and son to Viscount Blackmar.
Victor Hawthorn is just one and twenty, definitely not thinking of marriage, but when his father tells him of the arrangement made between himself and Mr. Thompson. Victor can either refuse to marry the girl, which would ruin his entire family; or he could marry this stranger, which would pay his father's debts, give Victor an amount of money to refurbish their country estate and give Victor the sole authority to deal with the viscountcy business and the money expenditures.
Victor and Charlotte marry, and they talk about their situation - he suggests taking he to his northern estate and he will provide servants and a companion for her while he returns to London for the estate business, also to supervise the refurbishing of their country estate. He takes her to the estate and discovers it is rundown and falling apart. Victor sees many problems, but Charlotte sees all the things she can do to make it her own home. She is thrilled with the idea and can't wait to be away from London and on her own without a husband. Victor spends a month with her, getting to know one another, taking care of the major problems with the building and they do not consummate the marriage as Victor feels she is too young, and he returns to England. Victor and Charlotte do correspond weekly; however, after four years, it is time for him to return. Many changes take place in a young woman's mind, confidence and body in four years and when Victor sees this beautiful young woman that is his wife, well, he is instantly aroused and amazed. Adjusting to life together, building a relationship, discovering Charlotte's secrets (governess position, sheep/wool producer, money in her private account, selling paintings, etc.), trying to deal with both dysfunctional families, plus attempted murder, murder, property damage, villain but most of all the way they got through it all and found love and a HEA. I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own.
Jane gives another marriage of convenience with twists for our enjoyment. She brings creativity to this story with insecurities on both sides and develops the drama from them. Her characters have flaws that bring out a realistic need we all cope with.
Charlotte Thompson is a month shy of 16 when her hard to please father demands she marry so he gets his titled grandson family connection. She just wants to be a governess after years of her father's critically telling her she will never amount to much.
Victor Hawthorn Thought he was just visiting family, when his father drops a demand to fix his mess. Now he has to marry to protect his younger siblings.
So the two marry on their terms and after spending a few months getting to know the other Victor goes to London. This allows Charlotte to mature and feel safe. Now four years have past and Victor hears news from a friend about his wife so off to see her he goes.
Here is where it gets real good. The two just have insecurities that they need to work thru and communicate to the other but the things Jane can throw at her couples are imaginative and compelling. These two can write and talk of mundane issues but put them face to face will give you great drama. Add family snobery, greed, and wants gives you a suspense into the mix.
Wow! “Enticed by a Governess” is truly a fairytale of a story! Charlotte Hawthorn loves her freedom, has no real aspirations to marry and dreams of being a governess. Victor, Viscount Blackmar is sowing his wild oats. At 21 with a pleasant life and mistress in London he has no desire to marry. However their greedy fathers, Victor’s with a bad gambling habit and Charlotte’s with a need for a title, come to an agreement that takes care of that debt and provides titles for future heirs. Charlotte and Victor must marry. Here is where the fun begins because where there is a will there is a sly way around this arrangement. But all good things must come to an end and Iife choices must be faced. Secrets, dysfunctional families, misperceptions and lots of letters later two changed adults meet at a crossroads in their lives. The plot is amazing and their challenges are incredible. The characters are warm and strong. Watching them grow, tackle life’s challenges and find their true paths in life makes this book a 10 in my estimation. Which path will they each take? This is definitely a book you have to read! Thank you so much to Jane Charles for the opportunity to read this sweet, romantic and funny tale of two souls who have no idea what they really want in life! I loved it!
When Victor Hawthorn's father arranged a marriage for his son in order to get his debts paid off he never imagined it would be to a 16 year old girl. Charlotte's father was a businessman who wanted a title in the family so he was willing to use his daughter to get it. While everyone in her father thought Charlotte was worthless, Victor was able to see the beauty, intelligence and talent in his young wife. He takes her to an estate that he owns only to find that it was rundown and falling apart. Where Victor saw only problems, Charlotte saw possibilities and set about making the house her own. Since he considered her too young for a real marriage, Victor left Charlotte in the care of a companion and went back to London where he stayed for 4 years. Coming back, he realizes that his ugly duckling has turned into an amazing swan. After 4 years of marriage, it is time for the couple to get to know each other. There are some ups and downs, secrets uncovered and family problems but despite it all they find the love they both deserve. When the happily ever after comes it is definitely worth the wait. I read an advanced copy of this book.
Charlotte Thompson is almost sixteen years old when her father informs her she is to be married to Victor Hawthorn, Viscount Blackmar, a man she has never even meet. Charlotte's father has always told her all the things wrong with her all her life. He even suggests that only his wealth is able to get her a husband. Victor is not happy about this situation either. Victor's father, Henry Hawthorn, has such large debts that if there were called due, the family would be destitute. Charlotte's father offers to pay all debts, plus more money so Victor and Charlotte can have a life. They marry, but never consumate their marriage. After only a short time in their countryside home, Victor leaves to go to London for business reasons and leaves Charlotte in their home. He does not return for four years. Why does Victor finally returned home? What will Charlotte think about her husband's return after four years of being on her own and all the freedom she has had? There are some "steamy" parts in this story along with very dysfunctional families, murder, attemptd murder and at least one villan. It is an interesting read.
I really enjoyed this story. Such a sweet story. Charlotte had everything she could want except love. Her father was very rich and wanted a title and knew the only way to get it was to marry his daughter to someone with a title. Victor thought his life was going along the way he wanted it, but his father was a big gambler, and they were about to lose everything. His father decided to have Victor marry Charlotte so his debts would be paid off. Charlotte is only 15 and her father is marrying her off. Once Victor met her, they made a plan to have her live in the country until they could have a real marriage. As things happen, Victor is delayed getting back to her for 4 years. Not that she minded. They had become friends through their correspondence, but Charlotte wasn't prepared for Victor to become her husband for real. Charlotte has been hiding a few things while living in the country and Victor isn't sure he can trust her. Then his mother and sister prove to be a problem. He isn't sure what he is going to do with all of them. Will they be able to find love and have a real marriage? There are so many things to test them.
I’m always happy to discover new authors, especially when they are that good! I was intrigued by this book from the very beginning, also because it’s my favorite trope, marriage of convenience. The hero and heroine were forced to marry very young, but they respected each other from the beginning and decided to live apart for a while. While living separate lives, they both grow and come to understand what they want in life, and in this way they can come together with a different frame of mind. I loved how their relationship was handled by the author and the book had some very funny moments as well as some very emotional ones. And I loved both Charlotte, who knows what she wants from the beginning even if she’s very young, and is able to make a life for herself, and Victor, who’s kind and honorable and very understanding. The slightly dark twist in the plot at the end made the book even more enjoyable in my opinion! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is not your usual governess story. Charlotte is a very intelligent , freckled-faced, little 15 yr old , traded off in marriage to a future Viscount, by her father, in hopes of attaining a title for his future grandson. Her new husband leaves her at a country estate and returns to London for four years. During those years, Charlotte grows up, and this independent and enterprising young lady remodels the estate, takes care of the tenants and accounting, works as a governess , sells her artwork, and in her spare time , buys sheep and uses their wool to invest in a mill, where she designs the fabric. When her clueless, absentee , husband finally returns, he is in for a big surprise!! This story is a total delight as they finally get to know the real person that they married, and fall in love.
Charlotte Hawthorn was forced to wed her husband at the tender age of 16 to gain her father an ever elusive title in the family. Victor gave her what she craved escape from a father who belittled her at every turn.
Four years later Charlotte had grown into her own as a painter and a governess, she had flourished in Wisteria House near Willanton. When news of his wife reached Victor he decided that a visit was long overdue. A visit that would reveal all the changes Charlotte had wrought both inside and outside of Wisteria House, however it would be the changes to Charlotte herself that would cause Victor to stay and reevaluate everything that he knew about Charlotte and so much more.
Forced Marriage Sold off by her father aged 15 in his bid to have a titled grandson, Charlotte is at least blessed with having a kind husband. Victor forced into the marriage by his father’s debts, on realising the age of his new bride, ensconces her at his northern property and doesn’t see her for another four years. On rejoining his bride, he discovers Charlotte has been keeping many secrets from him…. Can he trust her? Loved the story, the H and h and the dangerous twist at the end was a big surprise. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This story kept me turning the pages. Charlotte and Victor were forced to wed at a young age. Out of a sense of duty, Victor left her alone for several years. I loved how Charlotte blossomed into a beautiful, caring, and intelligent woman. She was able to keep her home running and making a living. Victor was hesitant to return, but pushed to do so, he was very surprised, though secrets still remained between them. His original motives for leaving were gallant, but he was more of a rogue when he came back. I fell in love with both of them and had to finish their story. I highly recommend this story.
I received an ARC, and this is my unsolicited review.
With this book, we finally get Charlotte’s story and find out why her husband has abandoned her. These are such interesting characters. I really enjoyed their time together and watching their romance play out. I enjoyed Charlotte more as the story went on. Many of the secondary characters added to the fabric of the story. It was good to get to see the 2 out of the 3 couples from the previous books in the series. This story could be read as a stand alone without anything being loss.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
3/5 overall 2/5 hotness and steam 2/5 humour and dialog story dragged a little throughout. don’t need to read other books in ordered, can be a stand alone. very disappointing there was no real connections to past female characters ‘friends’ in story.
A wonderful story and such a great series. This is a marriage of convenience that builds into so much more four years later for Charlotte and Victor. I enjoyed their journey, both independent and strong. A beautiful love that blossomed towards an endearing happy conclusion.
Beautiful love story Charlotte and Victor we an awesome couple. They were so young when they married but both grew and a beautiful love Developed between them. Would Recommend this book it was a 5 star ++++. It was great loved it
Generally wholesome main couple, problematic family members, some drama around secrets but dealt with fairly quickly, the main drama was resolved a bit too hastily (and the epilogue jumps a year immediately after, which is disorienting)
First of all, the title is highly misleading as she wasnt exactly a governess, and it wasn't something that really effected the plot as one would expect. The hero, Victor (21) got forced into an an arranged marriage by the heroines dad to pay of his dad's debt where he is married off to the15 yo heroin. Ofcourse the marriage is in name only and he lets her live in the country by her request, where he leaves her there for 4 years. However, he keeps writing her letters to check on her.
Then one of his friends mentions his wife and how she filled out and is a beauty, he gets curious about her and goes to visit her and the story picks off from there.
The hero is very nice and understanding, but he gets furious whenever he discovers that his wife is hiding something.
There were some elements that I didnt enjoy or prefered to not have included, nonetheless it was good writing.
An arranged marriage works out to benefit both the bride and the groom. She's too young and he's not ready to consummate the marriage. She's to establish a home at one of his estates not entailed. He stays away for four years, until he is informed that the young lady he married has become very independent and a very beautiful woman. Once he returns to her, he discovers she has secrets. Wanting more from this marriage, he waits for her to reveal her secrets. Just as they are building trust, it's tested by greed. A swoon-worthy hero. Heat level 4 I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
