One Battle After Another written by Paul Thomas Anderson and Thomas Pynchon and directed by the former seems to be the favorite to win the top awards this year (2025/2026) it has been nominated for nine Golden Globes including for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture – twice - Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture, Best Director - Motion Picture, Best Screenplay - Motion Picture – it might/probably enter The New York Times’ Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made and other lists – you find more than five thousand notes on films from that and other pages, along with about as many revies on magnum opera from The Greatest Books of All Time and other sites on my blog and YouTube channel https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/20...
10 out of 10
Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the greatest film makers of our and all time, his Magnolia https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/20... is part of the History of Cinema, just like One Battle After Another appears to get there, as one of the best of 2025 and of this century
Seinfeld has this piece in Is This Anything, which I have been listening to, where he says something like actors ‘have nothing in that head covered with gel, they tell them tell that thing we told you to say and then they come on the red carpet, like they are senators from Krypton…’ so to listen to them speak about the movie is a bit of a let down Leonardo DiCaprio is Bob, a revolutionary who has some amusing and tragic moments, he does much better than in Killers of The Flower Moon- Paul Schrader https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/20... had a good take on that one: ‘Leo took the wrong part, that of the idiot, to watch an idiot for more than two hours is too much’ words to that effect
French 75 – I think that was the name of this revolutionary group – tried to help immigrants, and this is so poignant in the world of MAGA, and got involved in some stupid activities, the film is impartial in that way, they show the excesses and stupidity of both extremes, the left and the right, though I feel that the extreme right is really abominable now Bob is under the spell of Perfidia, a leader that once caught becomes a ‘rat’, she is introduced in the witness protection program by Colonel Lockjaw aka Sean Penn, winner of two Oscars and probably soon to be nominated for another one, this character represents the horrendous radicals of the kind we see in the White House
It has been said that this is a motion picture for the left, but that is not just, we see how absurd the extremists on this side are, they are ridiculed – for instance there are some scenes wherein Bob has to give the passwords and he cannot, because his brain has been fried, he has used drugs and alcohol and does not remember this, maybe much of anything This formidable feature is not just about ideology, there is humor, as aforementioned, but One Battle is also a thriller, in that this MAGA like outfit is chasing down their enemies – just like in real life they dismantle, even kill people in the boats near South America, allegedly they carry drugs – and Lockjaw murders quite a few
Eventually, the gig that I see so similar to MAGA decides that they have to eliminate the colonel himself, because they hear he has had an affair with a black woman, and they are racists – look at the Orange Idiot they chose as their leader – so they send a hit man after the one that had done their work for them…it is a paradox we have seen in real life, where the Orange Monster has used a number of individuals, only to discard them, then insult and even try to get revenge on them, just one example is the once legitimate conservative Bolton, a national security adviser for the first term and now a target of autocratic investigations
Now for my standard closing of the note with a question, and invitation – I am on Goodreads as Realini Ionescu, at least for the moment, if I keep on expressing my views on Orange Woland aka TACO, it may be a short-lived presence Also, maybe you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this https://realinibarzoi.blogspot.com/20... – as it is, this is a unique technique, which we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not know how to get the benefits from it, other than the exercise per se
There is also the small matter of working for AT&T – this huge company asked me to be its Representative for Romania and Bulgaria, on the Calling Card side, which meant sailing into the Black Sea wo meet the US Navy ships, travelling to Sofia, a lot of activity, using my mother’s two bedrooms flat as office and warehouse, all for the grand total of $250, raised after a lot of persuasion to the staggering $400…with retirement ahead, there are no benefits, nothing…it is a longer story, but if you can help get the mastodont to pay some dues, or have an idea how it can happen, let me know
Some favorite quotes from To The Hermitage and other works
‘Fiction is infinitely preferable to real life...As long as you avoid the books of Kafka or Beckett, the everlasting plot of fiction has fewer futile experiences than the careless plot of reality...Fiction's people are fuller, deeper, cleverer, more moving than those in real life…Its actions are more intricate, illuminating, noble, profound…There are many more dramas, climaxes, romantic fulfillment, twists, turns, gratified resolutions…Unlike reality, all of this you can experience without leaving the house or even getting out of bed…What's more, books are a form of intelligent human greatness, as stories are a higher order of sense…As random life is to destiny, so stories are to great authors, who provided us with some of the highest pleasures and the most wonderful mystifications we can find…Few stories are greater than Anna Karenina, that wise epic by an often foolish author…’
