The Triad #1

The Rise of an Heiress

Rate this book
After decades of peace, The Cosa Nostra of New York City prepares for war against The Chicago Outfit while the Triad waits to reap the benefits of their discord.

Natalie Yang
When I was six years old, I had to leave the only family I’d ever known and The Outfit behind. While living in a constant state of hypervigilance, concealing my identity hasn’t been an issue. Natalie – who I have been for the last 20 years has kept me safe from the grasp of the Triad. However, when strange attacks start occurring in NYC, my senses are on high alert. With years of training, my stepdad ensured I could handle myself. What I wasn’t prepared for was for him to reveal that I was the long, lost Triad Princess – the last heir. Then, I discovered the deadly but intoxicating Nico Delucci made me his next target. After decades of peace, I have people coming after me on top of a newly bestowed duty. And I’m just not sure I’ll rise for the occasion.

Nico Delucci
I live and breathe for the Cosa Nostra – my family’s empire – and I’ll die for them too. My talents as an advisor and hacker make it easy to humble our enemies and keep our friends…compliant. As a consigliere, I have all the authority and freedom that men only dream about. However, someone has been messing with our ports and I can’t let that slide. Sources say The Outfit is responsible despite being cordial for decades. Now that Dominic Violante, the heir to the Outfit empire, is in town, I’m sure it’s them. I catch him spending his time with an alluring mystery woman. She’s the perfect target for our revenge, but I learn early on not to underestimate her. I should only want to take her down even though all I can think about is making her mine. I can’t afford any distractions but I might not have a choice.

Indulge your fantasies with this thrilling yet deadly, dark mafia romance.

From the author:

Dear Readers,

Thank you for your interest in reading by debut novel and supporting an indie author like myself. If you are just now wanting to pick up The Rise of an Heiress you probably noticed that it's no longer available on Amazon. That is because it was taken down by me on November 27, 2023 for rewrites. But have no fear, you won't have to wait for long, TROAH will be re-released on January 3, 2024.

✨So, what does that mean?
Not much! You will still be able to read either version and understand Book 2, The Fall of A Promise without any issues. It’s still going to be the fast-paced, steamy interracial romance, with a guy and girl boss, who dive in head first! The purpose of this is to tighten up the plot, update some copy and phrasing, as well as reworking a couple of chapters. NO NEW INFORMATION will be added to The Rise of an Heiress.

✨When is this happening?
The Rise of an Heiress will be taken down on 11.27.2023 and re-released on it’s 1st birthday, 01.03.2024.

Other questions answered on my website:

✨What if I want the new version and have the old?

i don’t even know how to start this review.
i was excited for this book, but it didn’t really live up to my expectations.
this is suppose to be princess diaries meets mafia but i honestly didn’t get those vibes.

the majority of the book takes place in one location, which was pretty boring, and mundane.
now i enjoy smutty romances, don’t get me wrong, but 3-4 chapters of it is just a little repetitive tbh. esp when some of it was so random.

there’s also no chemistry or tension between the two characters. when i say insta-love, i mean insta-love. the inner monologues of the main characters kept talking about enemies, but they kissed the very first time they Actually met. they were never enemies. the relationship moved so quickly that i never once was rooting for, or seeing a reason as to why these characters should be together.

the male main character had absolutely no personality. i found myself rooting for the side characters instead at multiple points. our fmc had more chemistry with them then she did with the love interest!

the only time we get to see them together, or acting as a couple is when they are having sex. we never got to see them get to know each other, or actually fall for each other. it was literally sex, sex, boom in love.

for this book to only have 294 pages, it dragggged. the pacing was so odd. this is a large piece of mundane information and setting with a short burst of actual action. it had a weird usage of capitalization, with the added affects of ‘SMACK!’ being featured that really made me cringe.

the epilogue was weird. it should have been included in the actual book as a chapter, considering that was the entire plot of the book. i think putting a plot twist like that at the end, after an epilogue, was weird as well.

overall, this book felt very cliche to me. it read like a culmination of tropes & scenes added that didn’t make sense. it honestly felt like a fever dream.

***I received an ARC of The Rise of an Heiress in exchange for an honest review***

This was one of my most anticipated reads of this year and rightfully so! This story grips you right from the very first chapter and drags you along the next few hundred pages.

At only six years old, Natalie Yang’s entire world completely shifted. In addition to her mother’s passing, she’s sent away to live a new life in New York City. Away from the Chicago Outfit and the only family she has ever known. This, in hopes of keeping her safe and hidden from the Triad. Now at twenty-six years old, Natalie is used to living in a constant state of hypervigilance. However, her world is flipped upside down once again when Nico Delucci, consigliere of the Cosa Nostra, makes her their next target. Little do they know, with years of training under her belt and under the protection of the Outfit, Natalie Yang is a force to be reckoned with.

My, oh my! What an outstanding debut novel and excellent start to a series. From the beginning, I loved the Princess Diaries meets the mafia concept. I was immediately intrigued, but nothing could’ve prepared me for such an exceptional execution.

Natalie became an instant book girlfriend. I’m OBSESSED with her! That entire sequence of girl badassery when they tried to take her and unalive her after her birthday celebrations was totally EPIC.

Something else I appreciated was the pacing of the storyline. Especially in regards to the romantic development between Nat and Nico. And I really loved her relationship with her siblings. Not gonna lie, I’m desperately hoping we get to see more of Dom in the next book. Or better yet, I hope we get his love story!

After finishing this book, I can wholeheartedly say that Paulina Pany has become an instant buy author. Can’t wait for Part 2!

note: these are *my opinions* which means absolutely no hate to anyone who enjoyed this/the author!!! i do think this would be a rlly good book to try out if you want to get into mafia/dark romance books!!
this just wasn’t for me, so i’m abt to rant abt it & if u don’t wanna read it pls scroll:)

i saw the synopsis a couple days ago, and i could not stop thinking abt it! so as soon as it was published i downloaded this on ku🙌
i’ll talk abt the parts i liked first!
— i rlly liked the idea that the mc finds out her true mafia heritage, i mean princess diaries meets the mafia??? sign me upppp, bc like in the princess diaries, i love a good reveal! (…but i was also expecting that journey of having to navigate a new world that i love sm abt the princess diaries, which we didn’t rlly get:/)
— bash, dante & enzo (the mc nico’s brothers) were all fun to read abt! (like seriously she should’ve gone w bash i loved him lol he was so sweet, he rlly did buy her a kindle so she wasn’t limited to the books in the house’s library💞)
— natalie had some very badass moments!! i truly wish there were more!!!!!! there were a couple moments with her & nico that were giving mr. & mrs. smith vibes, which i loved!
— the epilogue also was intriguing!!

ok now the things abt this book i didn’t like:/
i’d like to preface this with i feel like i’ve read a decent amt of dark romance/mafia books? (esp on wattpad back in 2016😭) so i feel like i have quite a range to compare to (even tho i wasn’t actively comparing this to other books but yea not my first rodeo in the genre ig😭)

the lack of chemistry/tension:
i wasn’t feeling that much chemistry between the mcs:/ i feel like given the circumstances of nat & nico being affiliated w opposite sides of the mafia, and nico wanting to take the outfit down (after thinking they stole like 20 million(?) in shipments from them) i was expecting lots of tension.
the characters hookup during their 2nd encounter (their 1st being exchanging a handful of words) & idk….i’m not a huge fan of insta-lust, especially in dark romance, and especially not insta-lust disguised as enemies-to-lovers. (note: i can’t find the author advertising the book anywhere as enemies-to-lovers, only rivals, but there’s a few mentions in the book of them being enemies for “so long” before giving in).
for two supposedly very smart/loyal members of the mafia, they sure did fold for each other rlly quickly despite knowing they were dangerous/deadly to each other. their “hate” for each other felt fake imo.

mafia logistics(?):
there were quite a few instances where members of the outfit & cosa nostra seemed a little too uninformed abt one another for the sake of plot convenience?
i get they’ve been allies for a long time, but ur telling me the cosa nostra sent men to ABDUCT nat, and the outfit isn’t keeping a bunch of tabs on them after?!?? & then they (nat + the two *heirs* of the outfit) unknowingly go to the club the CN owns?😭
i would’ve also liked to see more abt how exactly they hid nat for 20 yrs too, (& nat dealing w that huge change!!!) bc ur telling me she spent 20 summers with the Violantes & they visited her in NY constantly, and no one has ever noticed?
idk this is more just me being picky, but yea

smut:
i enjoy smutty books, but this didn’t rlly do it for me. some of it towards the beginning just felt so….random? sorta like the author was looking for a reason to add in smut. also towards the end there’s a solid 3-4 chaps back to back, that are almost entirely smut, i ended up skimming most of it.

once again these are my opinions so this is not meant to be hateful in any way, just me sharing my review:)

Get it here:
Amazon US * Amazon UK

I think this book had a lot of potential but sadly, for me, it fell flat. I enjoyed the characters, especially our heroine Natalie/Anya, but also felt like there was a lot more that we could have gotten from her character and didn't. At first she came off as a badass woman and then we started getting the storyline of her birthright which was really interesting. But then it kind of just fizzled out and became her waiting around for others to solve her issue? Then of course one fight at the end where she's suddenly a big badass again and then it was just over.

And I do know that there is another book coming and I believe that it will follow these characters some more, but I also felt like their ending could have been tied up nicely with this book. So another story for Nico and Anya, I have a feeling will be more like an extended epilogue.

I stumbled upon this book through my TikTok as I was mindlessly scrolling through it as one should. However, my friend dmed this blurb, and automatically I was intrigued. Who would NOT get excited about mafia x Princess Diaries? When I got the notification that I was able to get an ARC of this I was BEYOND excited. Let me tell you, this definitely lived up to the hype. I legit did not put it down unless I had to eat, drink, or sleep not even kidding and here I am writing a review at 1:30 am. If I could give this book 10 stars I would but sadly Goodreads only allows 5 so we'll settle with that.

I loved everything in this book, from the characters, the pacing, and the SMUT?! The smut was so immaculate I needed to have a water bottle next to me at all times while reading. In the media, Asian women aren't seen as badass or just cool but in this book it was EVERYTHING. Natalie is the baddest bitch and she does it with grace as she steps into this world. Honestly, I didn't know who I wanted more or who I wanted to be in this case because it was a win-win situation. Nico is DOWN BAD for Natalie and just straight-up obsessed. But I also loved the moments where he would encourage her to grow and evolve into the person she is now. The found family aspect was amazing as it solidifies that blood isn't everything but the people you surround yourself with. The best part? NO unnecessary 3rd act breakup as the communication between Nico and Natalie felt realistic with their ups and downs throughout the book. I am so so so excited when the next book in the series because I am already frothing at the mouth for the next one to be released.

A mafia bad boy instantly whipped by a mystery girl? A bad ass secret underworld princess? A truly amazing debut novel? Yes. Yes. And yes. I really really enjoyed this one! There is nothing more amazing than an h that can fight, stand up against the bad guys, and kill three men that were going to kidnap her.

Nico was so jealous of every guy she came into contact with but never tried to control her. Anya got around 😏 and I loved that.

The tiny bit of ow drama was there to showcase Anya’s jealousy in the best way but Nico wanted NOTHING to do with them. ever.
the housekeeper’s daughter was a wannabe ow but both the H and h put her in her place and it was lovely to see.

No scenes with ow/om
the h had a fling with her brother’s body guard and ended a “relationship” 6 months prior because he caught feelings hehehehehehe
no mention of the H’s past

My only issue was there was a lot of telling during some of the time lapse chapters. Like an entire chapter in Nico’s pov was literally “I told her this. She told me that.” but it didn’t deter me from enjoying it.

That cliffhanger ending has me so excited for the next book! A job very well done on this!

2.5/5 stars | i first want to say thank you to the author for giving me an ARC! this was my very first dark mafia romance and i'm not sure what to think about it. i picked it up because i saw there's an asian main character in a book thats like the princess diaries x mafia and it intrigued me so much! i enjoyed it at first but i honestly thought there would be more tension and chemistry between the 2 main characters but there absolutely wasn't. i don't mind insta-love but this was VERY insta-love, the first smut scene happened so soon that i verbally went "WHAT???". i liked the smut, but in my opinion the author could've taken out some of the scenes because they were just at random times and back to back scenes. also, at the last sex scene nico said something really disgusting and i just had to skip that part. i did like how badass natalie was but i wanted much more of that! overall, i thought it was just okay but it could've been much better.

The rise of an heiress review
Rating: 5/5
Heat: 🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖

Dare I say, I’ve been secretly dreaming of a book like this since I fell into the romance hole. Mafia romances are some of my favorites (looking at you, Machiavellian), but I never thought I’d get a book with an Asian badass FMC falling in love with a hotter than sin Italian god. So, thank you Paulina, for not only writing the book that sings to my dirty, mafia-loving heart, but for writing an amazing Chinese FMC in Natalie.

This book is not only written well, it has all the spice to go with it. The author KNOWS how to write the spice. IT. IS. SO. HOT. The chemistry between Nico and Natalie is undeniable and scorching. The heat hits early and doesn’t stop or slow down throughout the book. Just my style. These two are not fake or one-dimensional; they have passion and intelligence and humor in spades, and I am here for it.

The pace and flow of the story is good - I never felt stuck in one spot for too long or that the plot was dragging. And given that a lot happens in this book, I never felt lost or overwhelmed by too much story.

The ending had a few surprises that hit me hard, but it was ultimately satisfying. I was sad to finish because that means I have to wait for the next book!

ARC Review

OMG! OMG!! OMG!!!
I was obsessed with the premise of this book while Paulina was teasing us with snippets of it.
I'm so happy it lived upto every expectation of mine.

Natalie was an absolute badass FMC who did not disappoint and held her ground constantly.
Nico was just *chef's kiss* in the things he did and said.

I cannot wait for the 2nd book now and I need it ASAP.

2⭐️/2.5🌶️

Possible spoilers

Well I really didn’t like this at all lmfao.

The only thing that resembled “princess diaries meets mafia” was the fact that she didn’t know she was the heir to the triad and that was that. Growing up in the Chicago Outfit, she was raised to fight and handle her own so in that way she didn’t really need to learn the ropes. But I guess she’ll need to learn the ropes at being the “head of the dragon” cos I’d imagine that’s a whole different ball game.

Anyway, this was incredibly insta-love and it’s not even the good kind of insta love. Like anytime either of them said some lovey-dovey shit I gave MASSIVE side-eye. Like forreal? Y’all just met and y’all got heart eyes??? Puh-lease. And not to mention Nico is the consigliere for the fucking Cosa Nostra and Nat/Anya’s ENEMY and we couldn’t be granted a simple enemies to lovers?? Or is that what this was?? Cos if so, we simply missed the mark. BIG TIME. Like Nico is said to be this big bad Cosa Nostra, made man and i didn’t get that at all. And even as someone who grew up with criminals, Anya just didn’t give what she needed to give.

Everything moved incredibly fast and not in a good way. But in a way that made nothing make sense. Like she gets taken by Nico and his brothers to their safe house after being attacked and now is under their protection. And next thing you know a couple months go by and Nico and Anya have fallen in love with each other??? SIDE EYE. And next thing you know…THEYRE GETTING MARRIED??? ARE YOU SERIOUS?? I felt no chemistry between the two AT ALL. It made no sense.

The writing? Meh. Not that great imo. It was a lot of telling and not showing. For example, there was one scene where Nico is telling us that they’ve grown closer by listing all of the times where they clearly would have grown fonder of each other. but without seeing that I simply did not feel their connection. Amongst other things, I know we see some scenes where Anya and Nico are doing bad things to make them seem big and bad but i just didn’t FEEL it.

The epilogue was so dumb. It should have been a part of the rest of the book and something else should have been in place of the epilogue. Cos personally, idgaf about her as the triad leader I would rather see that in the actual book and see more of her and nico in the epilogue.

The chapter after the epilogue has some intrigue to it. It’s possible I will read it. who knows.

This is a solid debut book, with mafia romance meets Princess Diaries vibes. I was really excited to get something that wasn’t Italian/Russian/Irish/Polish in this genre (there is Italian mafia but there’s also a Chinese crime syndicate known as the Triad. I often wish there was more Asian crime syndicate representation in this genre - I enjoy Yakuza manga but that’s as close as I can usually get).

I do think the writing could be tightened up a little - it veers off focus at times and some parts are a little rushed, like the author was trying to get out all the info in one go. If it was a little tighter, it would probably address some of the issues with the story I had (the tension between the characters feeling less palpable, the spice feels perfunctory, and the stakes don’t feel intense like they should given the situation).

This is book one in a duet. It ends with a HFN so no huge cliffhanger but I’m looking forward to seeing how they navigate the new normal they have established by the end of the book!

First of all, I am so honored to have been chosen to read the ARC for Paulinas first book, I’ve been following the author on tiktok for a while and I am SO proud of her.

Second, yall know me. You know I dont like mafia romances, often times I find them a little cringey and they HAVE to check the specific requirements I have for them.

This book checked every single box and then some.

Nico’s obsession over Natalie is so incredibly petty its hilarious. Natalies strength and intelligence sets her apart from many mafia heroines I’ve met in the past which makes her unforgettable to me.

I expected Nico to be a misogynistic jerk like most mafia love interests are in books but he wasn’t, just a very large man that is obsessed :). Its a very small detail but its SO incredibly important to me. I feel like most times, misogyny is overlooked in mafia romances in the favor of “realism”. Thats not the case with The Rise Of An Heiress and it was incredibly relieving.

Also might I add, shes the freaking heiress to the Chinese Triad ??? HELLO???? what a badass.

THE SMUT ????? I literally couldn’t read this book in public, theres no way I’d be able to keep a straight face. and if I could I was DEFINITELY beat red the entire time.

A fast paced mafia romance where the love interest isnt a piece of shit ???? sign me UPPP. The way the book ended had my jaw DROPPING. I need the next one immediately. I needed it yesterday.

I happened to come across this book while browsing PangoBooks, and the cover is what initially caught my eye, but the synopsis sealed the deal, so I took a chance and got it, and man am I sure glad I did!

Natalie’s dad died when she was very young. Her mother remarried to the head of the cosa nostra, and was labeled a traitor by the Triad. Natalie’s mother gets cancer and dies not too many years after her dad died. To keep Natalie safe, she’s sent to live with her adopted family in New York.

Nico is the consigliere of the Cosa Nostra, and the owner of a chain of nightclubs. Nico is the one who cleans up for the Cosa Nostra. He never saw himself marrying, until one day he meets a mysterious woman at one of his clubs, who was with the future don of the outfit, and he has to know who she is….

This story is so addictive, I couldn’t put it down. Natalie is such a badass character, who doesn’t take crap from anyone. I love how she can handle anyone, and doesn’t need a man to take care of her. I love how the story was not only a love story, but also suspenseful. I cannot wait for the next book to come out, I’m dying to continue this story!

Let me just say, this book is sooooo good. Plot is great. The spice between the MC & FMC is off the chart!

Now, let’s get to the fun part. “The Rise of an Heiress, Part One” is the debut novel by Paulina Pany. This book has everything from silly banters to hot lovemaking to unaliving. Without giving too much away, let me just say, Niccolo “Nico” Delucci is 🥵🥵. Good lawd that man, his mouth and OTT possessive jealousy. Oh, and his inner monologues. Sweet and filthy. He’s definitely a swoon-worthy book boyfriend. I’m bumping him up my list. And don’t get me start on the FMC. She is no damsel in distress. She is bad AF! Paulina didn’t do my girl wrong. Also, the side characters!!! You’ll love all of them. Specifically Dante and Enzo 😏 Can’t wait to see what happens next.

I’m conflicted… yesterday as I was reading this book, I was enamoured. I couldn’t put the book down, I was enjoying it too much. I was sure it was going to be a 4.5 or 5 star rating. But after hitting the half way mark, the story was lacking a bit for me. It wasn’t as exciting or engaging as the first half, imo. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed it, but it wasn’t comparable to the first half. The first half had me completely hooked, and it made me excited to read again (after a few eh books..). Maybe part of it was the loss of momentum after reading the other half of the book the next day, but I just didn’t feel as excited as I did with the first half of the book.

Despite this, I still thoroughly enjoyed this book, and the characters. I adored Nico and Anya together, their chemistry was electric. And I loved Dante, he was the humour that was needed in the story. And I loved Dominic too (before he went to the safe house..) and Cesare, and of course Enzo and Bash. I wish we got to see more of Donna, though. Anya is a bad bitch. The way she took down three men in four minutes… cold. But baddie behaviour. I always love a strong, independent FMC. I like how she wasn’t whiny and could stand up for herself. I really liked Nico too, I thought he was the perfect mix of sweet, possessive, and crazy. Though I wish there was a little more depth to his character, maybe we can see that more in the sequel.

I really loved the fact that the FMC was an Asian woman— a fully Asian woman, not a wasian or an Asian woman with westernised features. In most romance books I’ve read, there has never really been any Asian FMCS. I felt so seen and it felt so nice to have an Asian FMC be truly desired by the MMC. I don’t know how to explain it, but it just made me feel really seen, to see some representation in books. To read about someone who I could actually see myself as, whilst reading the book. If that makes any sense at all. I just really enjoyed that aspect. It doesn’t come by often.

This was truly one of the VERY few mafia books (if not, the only one…) I’ve read that I could tolerate and didn’t cringe at. Most mafia books are insanely cringe to me— the writing, the descriptions of wealth and power, the violence, the arrogance, all of it. I’ve never been able to stomach a mafia book, until now. I can’t wait to read the sequel, but nothing will compare to the first half of this book. The emotions I felt reading it, it was just so captivating. I fell in love with reading again atp. I was excited to read again, after reading a few duds recently. It truly pulled me out of my reading slump. But now I’ll be searching for a book that makes me feel the way I did reading the first half of this book…

Overall, it was a fast paced, exciting and super engaging book. Very enjoyable, 3.5/5 spice levels (I’ve read worse..). The writing wasn’t too flowery or overly descriptive. It was simple but not cringe.

Rating: 4 stars (4.5 for the first half though, hehe)

Ever see a book synopsis where you hear just a few key words and immediately added it to your TBR? Meet Paulina Pany’s Rise of an Heiress: strong Asian FMC - check, Mafia Romance - check, did I mention fierce (not your typical damsel in distress Asian stereotype) FMC? Paulina’s first book embodies that mantra - if you don’t see what you want to read, write it yourself - and I’m so glad Paulina wrote this book!

I loved that Anya was introduced as a strong willed character and remained solid throughout the book without falling back to any typical stereotypes. She often went toe to toe with the challenges in front of her and impressed a male dominant underworld. Nico is your typical Mafia boss, as a matter of fact, he’s a second son! But he holds his own! I also dig the MMC pulling out all the stops to stake his claim even when he doesn’t realized what he wants. Two words - fire alarm. Hehe. This book didn’t fall into your cookie cutter formulas of how roles should be personified. Characters had layers, ensemble characters breathed charisma to the storyline and world building. I love me a good ensemble! There were a lot of bread crumbs when you meet side characters that really add to the story development.

There’s intrigue and a bit of mystery to Anya’s background, but I loved the sentiment of chosen family in this debut novel. Our chosen families often surprise us the most and makes bonds with blood families all more special. This book is more plot sprinkled with spice for me, and I ate all of Nico’s moments with Anya. I mean, who doesn’t love a one bed trope? The end of the book was a bit rushed for me, I would have loved a bigger finish with all the initial build up and see Anya in action more but overall, I loved it and can’t wait for the sequel!

I needed a fantasy break and this was just what i needed:

What I liked:
- I did enjoy the main plot. It was not new or unexpected but I enjoyed.
- the book was fast paced and i read this in a couple of hours.
- This book is told in dual POV and I enjoyed both MCs.
- The FMC was exactly what i wanted. usually FMCs in mafia romances are badass but sometimes whiny. I found that I really enjoyed her.
- I loved that their is no miscommunication. Something i dislike about a lot of Romance books is full grown adults have all this miscommunication for no reason. The MCs here were mature and just were able to talk to each other. It was refreshing.
- I enjoyed the cliff hangers and I can't wait to see what happens next
- I loved how diverse this book was. There was representation everywhere.
- Something that I ha

What I didn't like:
- Although I loved the characters we did not go into a lot of depth with them especially with the MMC. I felt very surface level with him. With the FMC there was instances where we touched on her emotions and went a little deeper in her background. I am hoping in book 2 we get more character development.
- I did find some of the sex scenes verbaige funny and not sexy, but maybe that was just me. They were too corny. Not all but some.

Overall great read pick it up.
