Bette Pesetsky is an American novelist and short story writer. She received her degrees at Washington University, St. Louis, and the University of Iowa, has been a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Iowa, California, and St Lawrence, and has been Writer-in-residence at the New College of Florida, Florida State University, Sarasota, since 2004.

Interesting family saga. 3 cousins, all essentially orphans, because with 2 of them, their father is dead, their mother is in an asylum, the 3rd one, her mother left she & her father & disappeared after the divorce. The second time, her father took off & left her with her stepmother, who raised her till she was 11, & then something happened to HER. These 3 girls were raised by their wealthy grandmother in NYC, sent to the best schools, etc. The 3rd one is a magician, & their story is told via a mix of correspondence from one of the sisters, who became a journalist & is writing a story about her cousin. Family secrets come to life in this slightly twisted tale, told by the girls themselves, from an adult perspective of them reflecting on their lives.
