In his book Ghost Soldiers: The Epic Account of World War II's Greatest Rescue Mission Hampton Sides briefly refers to an American woman, Claire Phillips, who is instrumental in saving lives by smuggling medicine into soldiers being held in Bataan. I knew I had to find that book and read her story. Manila Espionage is that book. Claire Phillips is a night club singer in 1940s Manila when the Japanese take over. Because of her dark complexion, she is able to pass as an Italian and avoid capture. She uses her position as an entertainer to spy on Japanese officers, passing on information to the American and Philippine guerrillas. This is just a small part of the good she does and the lives she saves during the war.

This book is out of print but can be found through inter-library loans. King County Library System has a copy. Well worth the effort.

I found this book after reading Broken Bay. This was listed as a primary source. So much a primary source some parts of that book were perilously close to plagiarism of this book.

This historical biography of a woman supporting Allied guerrillas in the Philippines is a solid read, especially for anyone studying the Japanese occupation of the PI.

While it is not the finest literature, it is a consuming story. After reading it, I’m left wondering how the rest of the author’s life turned out?

A very good read. I recommend it if you are at all interested in WWII in the Pacific theatre.

Another remarkable story from World War II in the Philippines. The autobiography of Claire Phillips, long out of print is now available on Kindle at a very good price. If you are at all interested in the Pacific War and are not familiar with her story, you must read this book

Republished as Agent High Pockets: A Woman's Fight Against the Japanese in the Philippines.
