This story was freakin GREAT. At first. From the get-go; snap, action, thrill, adventure, romance. It read like a movie, the connection between Cale and Taylor so strong and perf. So tastefully sweet and romantic that it was seriously knocking the hell outta my feels! Everything about this was absolutely perfect. I was halfway in already excited about re-reading the damn thing if not to absorb it all once again, reclaim anything I missed.
But then...I dunno.
The author must've gotten lazy or something because everything just...sagged. I could actually feel when this change occurred. When the tenderness left her hands. When the plot became sloppy and haphazardly glued together. I'm very disappointed by this and don't feel like getting into details, but this was cruel! How she snatched the bone from me right when I got to the good part. I can give details of where and why it got so "droopy"..falter of characterization, emotional depth... but as I literally just finished it and am writing this off of adrenaline, i'll just leave it at this.
Easily could've been 5 stars. But with that end, it dropped to the 3. As an encompassing whole, it stays placidly at a "high" 3.
Was eager to read everything else this author wrote. but now I just don't trust her. Will she get lazy like she did at the end of chasing the storm? Probably...Well this has ended by weeks-long book reading binge. Back to writing my own ish for the while.
I always enjoy Aliyah Burke stories. This one had just a hint of fantasy. The hero isn't a vampire, or a werewolf, but is an Astral Guardian preparing for an epic battle to save the world. The heroine is a woman who rolls with the punches, accepts who her man is, and learns to fight so that she can protect herself and help in battle. The signs point out that they are mates and the love develops. Good Read.
