Reading this was a blast from the past! Wow, I loved looking through the pages at the cute drawings, remembering how much fun I had with this book when I was a kid. The perfect book for those who like to draw. My only complaint is that I wish it had pandas and sea otters.

Our oldest has been bringing home lots of drawing books from her school library, and now our youngest is starting to do the same. Both of our girls enjoy learning how to draw different creatures from drawing books like this, and the results are rather impressive. Both can draw much better than I can!

We've really enjoyed Ed Emberley's Monster books like Go Away, Big Green Monster!, so we were excited to find some books about drawing by this author.

Our youngest brought this book home from her elementary school library. It's a good book that shows a step-by-step method to drawing faces. It uses basic shapes and simple additive layers of detail to make different characters and expressions.

Holy crap, I love this drawing tutorial SO FREAKING MUCH I may even buy the book (which is incredibly rare for me)! Emberley makes it ridiculously easy to draw up his characters. I spent at least 2 hours at the kitchen table drawing away and giggling out loud when I was done and it actually looked like the picture in front of me. I tried doing it a bit more freestyle after a few and it was reassuring that I still have my own way--but with his help, my faces have more expression to them. Really great practice for anyone who needs a kick in the drawing pants for future long-term illustrating-her-own-graphic-novel lofty goals.

Ed Emberley's drawings books are amazing. I have never seen another book allow children to do what this book can. Even fairly young children can manage many of these faces (though the fine lines are far easier for, say, 6-year-olds than 4-year-olds). And, of course, they are fun for adults as well. I'm not much of an artist (as much as I wish I were), but I feel like I can actually do something even slightly artistic when I follow this book, and that's a good feeling.

Emberley's simple drawing style encourages those who believe drawing is too hard for them. His step by step instructions will have children creating art in no time at all. After teaching how to make many faces, Emberley encourages kids to try their own by mixing and matching or modifying his designs.

the pictures are very small, but at least it makes drawing a face easy if you just know basic lines and curves and triangles and squares, etc.
