The dark of night, blood, sickness, and now burial - is there any source of fear I can't embody for you, dear humans?

Beautifully illustrated and carefully researched, Secrets of the Vampire traces the history of the myth from the origins to nowadays. Suggested to anybody into folklore.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Secrets of the Vampire is a well put together and fascinating compendium that is perfect for the target audiences age of 9-14 year olds. This book blends fact and fiction together as well as adding an air of mystery and intrigue throughout the book.
The illustrations are beautiful and fit the whole vibe of the book perfectly and add that touch more of interest in the stories. I loved that the narrators voice is implied to be that of a vampire, which heightened the experience of the book that bit more.
The book covers topics such as myths, legends, occult symbols, vampire lore, vampire tropes, religion, culture, and pop culture too such as Dracula, the Twilight series, and even Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
This is a great book to add to any collection and is a fun and interesting read for adults too!

Vaya joya.

"What good are your magnificent funerals in the face of the despair of the one you have abandoned and forgotten as soon as the appearance of life left his body, and who will come to in the depths of his coffins to die there for real?"-Maximilien Baufmann, On the appearance of death and on nasty burial (1851)

I decided to read last night while I was waiting in a queue to leave the Muse concert at Milton Keynes. Which I found very fitting as two of their songs were in the Twilight films- 'Supermassive Black Hole' in Twilight and 'Neutron Star Collison' in Eclipse. Within the book there is a section about how vampires are portrayed within film and television and Twilight was mentioned.

This is a book perfect for Vampire lovers, the book is told through the point of view of a vampire and talks about folklores and where vampires began. As I haven't looked into the folklores and the different forms of vampires before, I didn't realise how many varies their were. I love the illustrations and they pair the book beautifully.

Thank you Netgalley for a copy of the book for an honest review.

A nicely illustrated book but with a lot left to be desired.

I thought going into this book that I would find a lot of useful information in regards to vampires, their history, representation and characteristics. And, yes, it does contain that. But on a surface level. There's not enough detail about any of the topics mentioned in the index.
In regards to the style, the fact that the narrator speaks as if they're an actual vampire, really took away from the seriousness I expected from a non fiction book.
All in all, it is a pretty book with lots of illustrations and very general information about vampires that won't add much knowledge to those who are fans of these fanged criatures.

A brief look at the history of the vampire, from its origins in mythology and popular folklore to its more modern versions (Buffy, Twilight). All narrated from the particular voice of one of these creatures and accompanied by beautiful illustrations that match perfectly with the theme. In short, a good starting point from which to begin researching and learning about vampires.

me at parties from now on: did you know that one of many sources of vampire mythology came from the black plague, when so many people died that some of the sick were accidentally buried alive, and their screaming from the grave, coupled with the fact that they were sometimes dug up and found to have devoured their own flesh, gave rise to stories of the undead that morphed into the vampire stories we know today? 🙂

This was a delight to read. It's a rather informative short book about the history of vampires. It's told through the eyes of a vampire, and she takes us through folklore and literature, from Antiquity to today. With her, you learn about the first creatures resembling vampires in different regions of the world, as well as the history of the word itself. You get to the final forms of vampires, heavily influenced by Bram Stoker's Dracula and Hollywood. Beautifully illustrated by @lauraperezgranel, I recommend it if you want to add a bit of knowledge about vampires to your shelf.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the arc. All thoughts and opinions are my own

Secrets of the Vampire is a short but comprehensive summary of vampire history and lore. As someone with only a passing interest in vampires, I still found it quite interesting and informative. I also liked how the narrator themselves is a vampire, and honestly now I'd be interested in reading a longer novel where this idea of a member of the undead discussing and teaching humans about their history is utilised. Part of me wishes that the narrator's own perspective on the myths they discuss (and their 'accuracy') had been expanded upon, but I'm satisfied with what we got.

What really sold this for me were the beautiful illustrations. Though I wouldn't say I was at any point bored while reading, the art really drew me in and made the book so much more interesting.

There were moments that I felt the transitioning between sections could be a little clunky (such as very short section on the origins of the nightmare, which felt a bit disconnected), but otherwise it was an enjoyable read.

J’aurais aimé voir mentionné What We Do in The Shadows, un super mockumentaire !

Narrated by a vampire, this book is set out like an academic non-fiction piece that chronologically catalogs the influences, origins and evolutions of vampire lore with focuses of many iconic vampire medias such as Carmilla, Dracula and Buffy The Vampire Slayer. It is also beautifully illustrated.

I’ve always found Vampires to be very beautiful and interesting creatures but have only read or watched them in fantasy media. I have learnt so much about vampire lore and origins while reading this and will definitely be researching many of the cultures, mythology and media mentioned throughout this book.

The illustrations in this book were so beautiful and were so well done, I will definitely be supporting the illustrator from now on and checking out their other works.

I think this book is an excellent introduction to learning about vampiric lore and history and it is so incredibly researched and gives such in-depth information about vampire origins in just 77 pages. I hope this author has other works that I can check out and if not, I will look forward to their future releases. I will definitely be buying a physical copy of this once it is published.

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for allowing me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This review is completely my honest opinions of this book.

I loved this one, the illustrations are truly beautiful and even though I did not learn a lot (I had to write a whole 20p paper on vampires so of course I di my research) it was still lovely to read about how vampires came to be. I loved that the beginning included vampires from around the world. This is perfect for younger but also older readers, I highly recommend.

I found Secrets of the Vampire to be a really interesting and fun informative book about vampires. It goes over the history of vampires in different cultures and countries, as well as the history of vampires in media, ending the book in a small glossary of vampire related terms. I thought the illustrations in the book were marvelous too! Definitely will be recommending to my vampire lovers!!! Very thankful to NetGalley for giving me an ARC of this e-book!!!

Secrets of the Vampire is a mesmerizing compendium that effortlessly blends history, folklore, and pop culture references to offer an enchanting exploration of the vampire phenomenon. Written by Julie Légère and Elsa Whyte, this book is not only a delightful read for children aged 9-14 (the target audience) but also a book that can be enjoyed by adults as well.

One of the standout features of this book is its unique narrative voice, which cleverly adopts the perspective of a vampire as the narrator. This adds an intriguing layer to the storytelling and enhances the overall immersive experience.

The illustrations in Secrets of the Vampire are amazing. They effortlessly bring the vampire world to life, enhancing the reading experience. Laura Perez, the illustrator, does a fantastic job. The book is truly a feast for the eyes, which means a lot of readers will buy it just because it's pretty on the inside. It's unfortunate, though, that the cover doesn't stand out the same way the illustrations do.

I appreciate that the book covers vampire myths from different regions, not just Europe. It also delves into the fascinating world of vampire tropes and their representation in various cultures, including their intersection with religious beliefs. Including pop culture references, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Twilight, and Dracula, adds a contemporary touch that will resonate with fans of modern vampire literature and media. However, here we come across the book's second major flaw (the first being the cover); these pop culture references are all American or European. If the authors did take the time to write this book, they could have talked about pop culture in different parts of the world and introduced readers to that.

Long story short: this is the perfect gift for all the vampire lovers you know, regardless of how old they are!

⭐⭐⭐⭐
